Warren E. Hirt

Warren E. Hirt, 79, of Elmwood Nursing Home, formerly of E. Maple St., Clyde, died at Memorial Hospital Wednesday, April 24, 2002. Born March 25, 1923 to Harold and Dorothy (Last) Hirt. On June 12, 1948 he married E. Pauline Brutcher, she preceded him in death.

Surviving include: two sons, Thomas Hirt of Blacksburg, VA., and Timothy Hirt of Findlay; a daughter, Susan Collins of Lubick, TX.; two brothers, William Hirt of Port Clinton, and Luther Hirt of Fremont; and four grandchildren.

Services at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 29, 2002 at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home in Clyde. Burial at McPherson cemetery.

Visitation hours are form 2-6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Alberta J. Rumschlag

Alberta J. Rumschlag, 79, 10 Thomas St., Tiffin, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at her residence.

She was born July 23, 1922, in Reed Township, Seneca County, to the late Edward and Anna (Schriner) Scherley. On Nov. 24, 1942, in Fort Sill, Okla., she married Paul Rumschlag. He died Jan. 2, 1982.

Surviving are three sons, Gary Rumschlag of Risingsun, Thomas Rumschlag of Attica and Mark Rumschlag of Tiffin; three daughters, Marilyn Gillig of Tiffin and Paula Welty and Mary Beth Wonderly, both of Fremont; a brother, Urban Scherley of Bellevue; a sister, Mrs. Jack (Mildred) Turner of Tucson, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Three brothers, Oscar, Victor and Harold Scherley and a grandson, Gary Rumschlag Jr., also are deceased.

A 1940 graduate of Attica High School, Mrs. Rumschlag was a homemaker and owner of P & A Groceries and Meat Market. She had also worked as a housekeeper and meal planner at the Daughters of America Home. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Tiffin and enjoyed crocheting, sports, traveling, history and spending time with her grandchildren.

The Rev. Frank Murd will be the celebrant at the 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 29 funeral Mass in St. Mary Catholic Church. A rosary will be recited at the church 15 minutes prior to the Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Hannay-Traunero Home, 214 S. Monroe St., Tiffin, (419) 447-3113. A parish wake service will be at 3:45 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Mercy Mobile Meals or to a charity of the donor's choice, in care of Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home.

Jeanette Light

Jeanette Light, 78, of McPherson Hwy., Clyde, died Friday, April 26, 2002, in her daughter's home in Gibsonburg.

She was born Dec. 2, 1923, in Ohio to Otis and Edna (Benton) Van Sickle. She married F. Eugene Light April 10, 1943; and he died March 21, 2001.

Survivors include: a daughter, Carol Nehls; two grandsons; and a sister, Helen Dishong of McComb.

A son, Lynn Bari, died in 1989.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, in the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde, with interment in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Norbert J. Lang

Norbert J. "Norbie" Lang, 85, of 511 Clay St., Carey, died at 1:05 p.m., Friday, April 26, 2002, in Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus.

He was born Sept. 4, 1916, in New Riegel to Anton and Theresa (Filliater) Lang. He married Shirley M. Harrold Dec. 2, 1950, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation, Carey; and she survives.

Other survivors include: four sons, Michael R. and Frederick J. of Carey, David E. of Findlay, and Timothy E. of Roseville, Calif.; three grandchildren; four brothers, Gilbert of Fostoria, Alvin of Bascom, and Robert and Wilbur of Tiffin; and four sisters, Helen Fleck of Hollywood, Fla., Pauline Lang of Marion, Margaret Elchert of New Riegel, and Donna Newlove of Fostoria.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, in the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation, Carey. Military graveside rites will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Carey.

Visitation is 2-9 p.m. Sunday in the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey.

Marian Lois Kellett

Marian Lois Kellett, 82, of Perrysburg, and formerly of Homestead Place, Maumee, died April 26, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital.

Mrs. Kellett was born in Toledo on April 5, 1920, to George and Emma (Janke) Braun. She married Robert J. Foster, who preceded her in death, and later married Don Kellett, who survives.

She is survived by her loving husband, Don; son Bob (Cathy) Foster of Tiffin; daughter Sue (Dennis) Whitmire of Perrysburg; grandchildren; Heather (Keith) Shue of Perrysburg, Dean Whitmire of Perrysburg, Stacy (Brian) Meier of Pickerington, and Jon Foster of Tiffin; great-grandson Adam Shue of Perrysburg; stepsons, Robert Kellett of Seattle, Wash., Jeffrey Kellett of Miami, Fla., and James ((Jeanne) Kellett of San Jose, Calif.; stepdaughter, Jean Marie (Carl) Peace of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and five step grandchildren.

Mrs. Kellett was a graduate of the University of Toledo, obtaining her business degree in accounting, and for more than 15 years had worked as a Court Administrator for the Trusteeship Division of the Lucas County Municipal Court. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Maumee, the Child Conservation League in Toledo, and the German-American Club Festival Society. Mrs. Kellett enjoyed listening to music, reading and playing cards.

Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, Perrysburg (419-874-3133), where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2002. Burial will be in Fort Meigs cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Northwest Ohio, 1545 Holland Road, Suite B, Maumee, Ohio 43537 or St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Maumee.

Lois E. Hummel

Lois E. Hummel, 86, of Bellevue, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at the Bellevue Hospital.

She was born Oct. 15, 1915, to Albert and Annie (Francis) Andrews. She married Norman F. Hummel. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include: a son, James A. Hummel of Attica; and five grandchildren.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Foos and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be at the Bellevue cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Hilda Kerlin Summers

Hilda Kerlin Summers, 94, of Perrysburg, died at Heartland of Perrysburg, where she lived for two years. She formerly lived in the Old Fort area.

She was born in Maple Grove Sept. 2, 1907, to Willy and Nora (Hade) Kerlin. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Fred N. Dooley, who died July 15, 1940; and George W. Summers, who died Oct. 8, 1970. She married Carl W. Stephens in Clyde Sept. 9, 1979, and kept her summers name. He died May 3, 1996.

Survivors include: a daughter, Hilda B. Baugher of Perrysburg; 12 grandchildren and many great and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 7 p.m. Monday at the Nopper-Veh Funeral Home, Gibsonburg. Burial will be private at a later time.

Visitation will be 6-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Noble J. Sherck

Noble J. Sherck, 83, of Northeast Catawba Road, Port Clinton, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, in Naples, Fla.

He was born May 15, 1918, in Green Springs to Oscar D. and Neda O. (Matz) Sherck. He married Elizabeth (Phalin) Sherck Dec. 11, 1972, in Clearwater, Fla.

Survivors include: his wife, Elizabeth Sherck; three sons, Noble (Jack) Sherck Jr. of Abilene, Kan., Dennis C. Sherck of Ventura, Calif., Rick Phalin of Toledo; two daughters, Wendy Phalin Buchman of Naples, Fla., and Tammy Phalin Wilson of Kingston, Tenn.; a brother, Dale C. Sherck of Belleair, Fla.; a sister, Donna Lanfgitt of Indianapolis, Ind.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde. Burial will be at Catawba Island cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Kenneth O. Strode

Kenneth O. Strode, 76, of Valleyview Dr., Bellevue, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo.

He was born Jan. 11, 1926, in Willowshade, Ky., to Walter and Grace (Younger) Strode. He married Harriett (Beck) Strode on March 28, 1948.

Mr. Strode was an U.S. Army (94th Division) veteran, serving during World War II and received the Bronze Star.

Survivors include: his wife, Harriett Strode; a son, K. Rod Strode of Columbus; a daughter, Diane Strunk of Bellevue; six sisters and four grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Auxter Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be at Bellevue cemetery. Military graveside services will be provided by the Bellevue VFW and American Legion.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ann C. Blaes

Ann C. Blaes, 100 years old, 190 St. Francis Ave., 205, Tiffin, died at 2:30 a.m. Monday, April 29, 2002, in St. Francis Home.

She was born July 27, 1901, in Tiffin, to the late Charles H. and Matilda (Steinmetz) Blaes.

Surviving are four nieces, Charlotte Schumm and Phyllis Sturdevant, both of Tiffin, Barbara Fair of Centerburg and Kathleen Koontz of Denver, Colo.; and two nephews, Edmund and Ralph Szablewski, both of Tiffin.

Preceding her in death were a sister, Mary Szablewski; a brother, Peter Blaes; a niece, Martha Lewis and two nephews, Richard Blaes and Louis Szablewski.

Ms. Blaes was the only surviving member of the Class of 1919 of the Ursuline Academy. She worked for 50 years for Prescott-Ball-Turben Investment Bankers, Cleveland, retiring in 1977, as secretary to the president. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Holy Family Cancer Guild in Cleveland, Tiffin St. Joseph Rosary Altar Society and the Leisure Bridge Club, where she continued to play bridge until her death. She returned to Tiffin in 1982, after living in Cleveland for 50 years.

A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, in St. Francis Home Chapel, 182 St. Francis Ave., Tiffin, with the Rev. Richard Dunn officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at St. Francis Home.

The Rev. Russell F. Gillig

The Rev. Russell Francis Gillig, 92, 182 St. Francis Ave. (St. Francis Home), Tiffin, died at 8:25 a.m. Sunday, April 28, 2002, in St. Francis Home, Tiffin.

He was born July 12, 1909, in Tiffin, to the late Otto and Clara (Kuntz) Gillig.

Surviving are a brother, Donald Gillig of Tiffin and a sister, Mrs. Morris (Joan) Greenspun of Sun City, Ariz. A brother, Edmund Gillig, is deceased.

Father Gillig attended St. Joseph School, Tiffin and graduated from Tiffin Calvert High School in 1928. He attended St. Joseph College, Renselear, Ind., St. Gregory Seminary, Cincinnati and Mount St. Mary Seminary, Norwood, Ohio.

He was a Roman Catholic Priest for the Diocese of Toledo, serving as an assistant pastor at St. Wendelin, Fostoria; Good Shepherd, Toledo; he was assistant principal at Calvert High School 1936-1939; served in Rome City, Ind. 1939-1940; then he was assistant pastor at St. Peter, Mansfield 1940-1943; St. Thomas Aquinas, Toledo 1943-1953; then he became pastor at St. Mary's, Van Wert 1953-1968; St. Joseph, Fremont, 1968-1973; and St. Michael, St. Michael Ridge, Ohio 1973-1978. Father Gillig retired in 1978, and then assisted at Immaculate Conception, Bellevue 1978-1980; The Propagation of the Faith throughout the Toledo Diocese, 1980-1987; and has been chaplain at St. Francis Home, Tiffin, since 1988. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 36 Melmore St., Tiffin. A rosary will be recited in the church 15 minutes prior to the funeral Mass Friday. The Most Rev. James R. Hoffman, Bishop of the Diocese of Toledo, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery, Tiffin.

Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at St. Francis Home Chapel, 182 St. Francis Ave. The body will be received at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 2, followed by a Vesper service with visitation continuing until 9 p.m. The Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree will stand honor guard at St. Joseph Catholic Church 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be made to St. Francis Home or Calvert High School, in care of Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home, 214 S. Monroe St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419) 447-3113.

Charles Richard Woods

Charles Richard Woods, 81, formerly of 311 Jefferson St., Tiffin, died 2:15 a.m. Monday, April 29, 2002, at Autumnwood Care Center.

He was born Nov. 7, 1920, in Tiffin to Harry S. and Mabel (Eastman) Woods. He married Irene (Weller) Woods on July 31, 1954. She survives in Tiffin.

Other survivors include: a daughter, Debbie Sue Hopkins of Mt. Sterling; a brother, John E. Woods of Tiffin; and a grandchild.

Mr. Woods was a lifelong resident of Tiffin and was retired as owner/operator of Woods Typewriter Sales and Services. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, the adult Sunday school class and former coordinator of class and elder at Trinity UCC. He was 1938 graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School and a veteran, having served during World War II.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Turner-Engle Funeral Home with the Rev. Laurie Hill officiating. There will be no burial at this time.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Church of Christ or a charity of the donor's choice.

Martha Jane Workley

Martha Jane Workley, 97, formerly of South Wood Street, Fostoria, died 1 p.m. Monday, April 29, 2002, at St. Catherine's Care Center.

She was born March 14, 1905, in Carey to John and Elvira (Johnson) Slotterbeck. She married Harold-Bentz on April 6, 1926 in Carey and he died Oct. 24, 1942. She then married Clarence H. Workley on Aug. 26, 1944 in Carey. He died Feb. 14, 1972.

Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Virginia (Donald) Blaser of Fostoria; a step-son, Clayton Workley of Findlay; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Workley was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Betty Thomas; three step-daughters, Leah Mae Dillon, Margaret Thomas and Bonnie Long; two brothers, William and Charles Slotterbeck; and three sisters, Olive Gerber, Bertha Mitten and Alice Kotterman.

She retired in 1965 from Autolite Co. in Fostoria with over 25 years of service. Mrs. Workley was a 1924 graduate of Carey High School. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Fostoria, the Hope 60 Club, the First Church of the Nazarene, Fostoria, Fostoria Shepherd Center and AARP.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Chew officiating. Burial will be at Knollcrest Gardens in Arcadia.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hope Lutheran Church or First Church of the Nazarene, Fostoria.

Dorothy L. Kopp

Dorothy L. Kopp, 79, 60 N. SR 101, Lot 33, Tiffin, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, in the Autumnwood Care Center.

She was born March 13, 1923, in Seneca County, to the late Clarence and Olga (Houck) Tiell. On Dec. 13, 1944, in St. Joseph Church, Tiffin, she married Ray Edmond Kopp. He survives.

Survivors also include: eight sons, Raymond E. Kopp of Tiffin, James A. Kopp of Republic, Steven R. Kopp of Green Springs, Mark A. Kopp of Republic, Richard D. Kopp of New Orleans, La., Timothy P. Kopp of Tiffin, Thomas W. Kopp of New Orleans and John B. Kopp of Tiffin; three daughters, Mrs. Ray (Kathleen) Runion of Bloomville and Margaret E. Moser and Mrs. Gary A. (Lori) Chapman, both of Tiffin; two brothers, Louis Tiell of Littleton, Colo. and Howard Tiell of Tiffin; 29 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Three brothers, Tom, Fred and Bernard Tiell; and two sisters, Anna Lou Scholl and Margaret Gaietto, are deceased.

A homemaker, Mrs. Kopp was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and its Rosary-Altar Society.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 2, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. James K. Say officiating. The rosary will be prayed at 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery.

Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made for funeral Masses, to the family or St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Jason A. Brady

Jason A. Brady, 29, of Darmstadt, Germany, formerly of Fostoria, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, as a result of a car accident.

He was born March 20, 1972 in Tiffin. He married Petra Klump on May 6, 1996 in Fostoria. She survives in Fostoria.

Other survivors include: his mother, Marilyn (Harmon) Greaney; stepfather Stephen Greaney, both of Fostoria; a son, Jovan A. Brady of Germany; a brother Joshua A. Brady of Findlay.

Mr. Brady was an U.S. Army veteran serving from 1990-1999. He served in Desert Storm, and also served in Bosnia and Macedonia, receiving numerous service medals.

Memorial will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the United Veterans of Fostoria in Fountain cemetery.
