Herman B. Comer Sr.
Junior Home Kid

Herman B. Comer, Sr., 75, of Veterans Home, Sandusky, died at 5:25 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, in Secrest Care Facility, Sandusky, where he had been a resident since July 6, 2001.

Mr. Comer was born April 28, 1926, in York County, S.C. to Thomas Franklin and Grace (Wooten) Comer. He married Ella Blanche Pollock on April 10, 1946, in New York.

Surviving are: two sons, Herman B. Jr. and David W. of Tiffin; three daughters, Ethel L. Mathias of Findlay, Deb Depinet of Tiffin, and Tammi Maners of Rock Hill, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Paul R. Comer of York, S.C.

Deceased are: his wife; six brothers, Robert M. (Max), James E., George, Joseph N. (Neil), Lewis (Ted), and Thomas E. Comer; and three sisters, Louise Comer McSwain, Annie Mae Comer, and Jean Comer Gardner.

He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Hornet during World War II; retired from the Basic Refractories (Premier Corp.); and was a member of American Legion, Eagles, Amvets, and DAV.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today in Fairmont cemetery with the United Veterans Council conducting the service.

There is no visitation.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.

The Turner-Engle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Tomcik
Former Lawson Store manager

Phyllis C. Tomcik, 70, of 41 Douglas St., died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at her home.

She was born July 16, 1931, in New Castle, Ind., to Clarence and Elizabeth (Reese) Turner and they are deceased. She married Joseph Tomcik on Nov. 24, 1956, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Tiffin. He preceded her in death October 1962.

Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Lisa) Walland; a brother, Donn Turner; two sisters, Pat Phillips and Jean Aller; three grandchildren and a great-grandson, all of Tiffin.

Mrs. Tomcik graduated from Columbian High School. She retired as manager of the former southend Lawson Store (Dairy Mart) after 20 years of service, and she was an avid bingo player.

The Rev. Mark Lafferty will officiate services at 11 a.m. Monday at Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home in Tiffin. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery.

Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home, 263 S. Washington St., Tiffin.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Virginia Appell
Fostoria resident

Virginia R. Appell, 77, of 425 West Ridge Drive, died at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at St. Catherine's Care Center in Fostoria.

She was born June 14, 1924, in Cleveland to Gilbert C. and Rose E. (Mehr) Wilhelm. They are deceased. She married Franklin Snyder in 1943, and he died in World War II in 1944. She then married Robert H. Appell on June 18, 1949, in Fostoria, and he survives in Fostoria.

Survivors also include: two sons, David C. of Fostoria and Michael R. of Columbus; three daughters, Mrs. Brad (Margaret) Kammeyer, Mrs. Ron (Gail) Reinhard, and Ruth A. Appell, all of Fostoria; a sister, Marjorie J. Maurer of Fostoria; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Appell worked for Kiddy Club Child Care in Fostoria. She was a 1942 graduate of Fostoria High School and a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Fostoria. She was a Brownie leader, Sunday school teacher, den mother, PTA leader and assisted with Campfire Girls.

The Rev. Dr. Larry W. Knigga will officiate services at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria. Interment will be in Fountain cemetery.

Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hope Lutheran Church, 151 W. Center St., Fostoria, OH 44830.

Christopher Newsome
Stillborn infant

Christopher Allen Newsome died at 11:35 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, in Mercy Hospital of Tiffin. He was the son of Joshua Newsome and Gail Boner of 211 E. Market St., Tiffin.

Survivors include: maternal grandparents, Clarence and Bonnie Boner of Tiffin; paternal grandparents, Cindy Key of Findlay and Gary Newsome of Groton, Conn; maternal great-grandmothers, Mary Ellen Boner and Bonnite Mizen, both of Tiffin; and paternal great-grandparents, Merlin and Janice Brim of Findlay.

Services will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home, Tiffin. The Rev. Frank Murd will be the officiant. Burial will be in Seneca Memory Gardens.

Visitation is noon-1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice in care of Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home, 214 S. Monroe St., Tiffin, OH 44883.

Thomas Frederick
Fostoria resident

Thomas Carle Frederick, 51, of 850 Walnut St., died at 2:40 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, in Lima Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 27, 1950, in Fostoria, to Carle and Sada Glenn (Nichols) Frederick and they are deceased. He married Elizabeth Wahrer Feb. 26, 197,7 in Findlay, and she survives.

Survivors also include: two sons, Carle and Schaffen Frederick, and a daughter, Autumn Frederick, all at home; and a brother, James Frederick of Port Clinton.

An infant brother also preceded him in death.

Mr. Frederick served in the U. S. Army and was employed at Intermetro in Fostoria. He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ in Fostoria.

Graveside services will be conducted by the United Veterans of Fostoria at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fountain cemetery in Fostoria.

Visitation is 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, prior to services, at Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home in Tiffin.

Herbert Snyder
Fostoria resident

Herbert Eldon "Herb" Snyder, 79, of North Vine St., died at 11:01 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, 2001 in Fostoria Community Hospital.

Arrangements are pending at Hoening Funeral Home in Fostoria.

Roberta Van Nette
Tiffin State Hospital retiree

Roberta B. Maule Van Nette, formerly of Tiffin, died Sat. Aug. 18, 2001 at her home in Panama City Beach, Fla.

She was born July 29, 1918 in Tiffin to William and Carrie Maule, and both are deceased. She married Adair B. Van Nette Jr. on Feb. 9, 1941. He is deceased.

Survivors include: three sons, Adair and Randy of Panama City Beach, Fla., and Terry Van Nette of Orlando, Fla., a grandson, of Wellington, Fla.; and a granddaughter of Panama City Beach, Fla.,

Mrs. Van Nette was a Tiffin Columbian High School graduate and retired from Tiffin State Hospital after 25 years of employment.

Memorials may be made to: The Hospice of Northwest Florida, 2589 Jenks Ave., Panama City, Fla.

Therman Fadley
Timken Company retiree

Therman E. Fadley, 79, of Bloomville, died at 10:55 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20, 2001 at Countryside Continuing Care Center in Fremont.

He was born Sept. 5, 1921, in Nevada to Bert and Hazel (Beard) Fadley and both preceded him in death. He married

Rosemary Fox on June 29, 1944, and she survives.

Survivors also include: a son, Gary Fadley of Saudi Arabia; a daughter, Mrs. Randall (Linda) Eppley of Lindsey; six grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Merle (Frances) Fox of Nevada.

Deceased is his son, Donald.

Mr. Fadley worked at Miller Brothers Trucking in Upper Sandusky, farmed and was a Machinist at Timken Co. in Bucyrus for 30 years, retiring in 1986. He was a 1941 graduate of the former Eden Centralized School, attended Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bucyrus, was a member of the Lykens Township Volunteer Fire Dept., Lykens Conservation Club and enjoyed motorcycles.

Services will take place at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home, 215 N. Walnut St., Bucyrus, with Father Ronald LeJeune of Holy Trinity officiating. Burial will be in Nevada cemetery.

Visitation is 1-3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Holy Trinity Endowment Fund in care of the funeral home.

Russell Smith
Father of Tiffin resident

Russell Earl Smith, 82, formerly of Woodley Ave., Findlay, died at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001 at St. Catherine Care Center in Findlay.

He was born Dec. 9, 1918 in Forest to Earl W. and Hazel M. (Baker) Smith, they are deceased. He married Ella Belle Musgrave and they divorced. He later married Marilyn Coats and they divorced.

Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Ora L. (Jean C.) Preston of Tiffin; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.; and a sister, Marie Tewell of Galion.

A son, Larry Smith, is deceased.

Mr. Smith served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He retired from Cooper Tire and Rubber Company in Findlay as a Quality Control Technician.

He was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church; Findlay Lodge 227 Free and Accepted Masons; Findlay Chapter 58 Royal Arch Masons; Hancock County Scottish Rite Assoc., and former member of Findlay Commandery 49 Knights Templar.

Services will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday at Coldren-Crates Funeral Home in Findlay with the Rev. Todd E. Frail officiating.

Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery in Findlay.

Visitation is noon-2 p.m. Thursday, prior to services, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Findlay.

Velma M. Stover
Erie Street resident

Velma M. Stover, 93, of 175 Erie St., died at 8:40 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2001, in Mercy Hospital of Tiffin.

Mrs. Stover was born in Eden Township on Nov. 23, 1907, to Peter and Esta M. (Price) Britner. She was raised by her grandparents, Jacob and Sarah Price. She married Orrin E. Stover July 24, 1927. He died July 11, 1971.

Survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Dorothy) Long Sr. and Mrs. John (Norma) Long, both of Tiffin; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Two great-grandchildren and a brother, Carl Barlecamp, are also deceased.

She was formerly employed at Woolworth's, JCPenney and Heidelberg College; a member of the Harmony United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Christian Service Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women; also a former Sunday School teacher, Lay Leader and president of United Methodist Women. Her hobbies were making pies and pastries.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, in the Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore, with the Rev. David Powell officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View cemetery, Sycamore.

Visitation is 6-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Latin Home Missionary Association and Gideon International or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Bonnie M. Bullard
Clyde resident

Bonnie M. Bullard, 67, of Howard Street, Clyde, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, in Bellevue Hospital.

She was born June 19, 1934, in Newton, W.V. to George and Antha (Wilmoth) Shamblen. They are deceased. She married Coy D. Bullard Sept. 25, 1951. He died July 17, 1988.

Survivors include: a son, Dennis Ray of Clyde; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Barbara) Bessken and Mrs. Lee (Sandra) Peters, both of Clyde; and four grandchildren.

Deceased include: three brothers, Daryl, Ranzel and twin brother, Donnie; and three sisters, Geneva Graham, Opal Murphy and Elva Ruth McElwain.

She was educated in West Virginia; employed as a bartender at the Clyde Eagles; and a member of the Harvest Temple, Clyde.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde, with interment in the Greenlawn Memory Gardens.

Visiting hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home where Eagles, Moose and VFW Auxiliary services will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Fred Wheatley
Helena resident

Fred Wheatley, 77, of 6020 CR 21, Helena, died at 3:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at his residence.

He was born to Roland Russell and Anada (Stanley) Wheatley. He married Josephine Crabtree May 16, 1947, in Clintwood, Va., and she survives in Helena.

Other survivors include: a son, Fred R. of Helena; a daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Dana) Chancy of Northwood; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Stella Holt of Auburn Hills, Mich.

Deceased include: five brothers, Ivory, Winston, Ted, Emmette and Virgil Wheatley; five sisters, Ernie Lipps, Pearl Wheatley, Buena Ratliff, Mable Ratliff and Dolly Colley.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he served in Burma, and retired in 1986 after 21 years with Carpenter's Local 248, Toledo.

Funeral service will be at noon, Saturday, in the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria, with the Rev. David P. Chapman officiating.

There will be visitation two hours prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
