Janet K. Schmidt
Former Autolite employee
Janet K. (Harrison) Schmidt, 56, of 519 Main St., Risingsun, died at 11 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2001, in Lima Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 3, 1944, in Fostoria, to Royal and Betty (Dicken) Harrison. They both survive.
Survivors also include; a brother, James R. Harrison of Fostoria; two nieces, a nephew and two great-nephews; and her grandmother, Kathryn E. Harrison of Fostoria.
Ms. Schmidt, a graduate of Lakota High School and Heidelberg College, with a BS in business administration, had worked for 16 years, the last three as a benefits administrator at the former Autolite Co. in Fostoria and Perrysburg.
She was a life-long member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church and until her illness had served as church organist and treasurer. She also was a member of Jane Washington Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.
Her body has been donated to science research. A memorial service will take place in her honor at 11 a.m., March 31 in the Rehoboth United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gary Staats officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Rehoboth United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or the American Kidney Foundation.
Georgia (Stephens) Eckert
Sister of Tiffin resident
Word has been received of the death of Georgia E. (Stephens) Eckert, 86, of Trevase, Pa., who died recently in the Frankford Bucks Hospital.
She was born in Whitley City, Ky., and raised at the Junior Home. Her husband, Charles Eckert, is deceased.
Survivors include: two sons, Charles Jr. and Robert A. Eckert; a sister, Beatrice DeRose of Tiffin; and two brothers, Homer D. Stephens of San Jose, Calif. and Harold Stephens of Dayton.
A sister, Flonnie Bowerman; and three brothers, Jack W., Paul and Caleb Stephens, also preceded her in death.
She was a member of Bensalem Baptist Church for more than 35 years.
Services took place Saturday in Trevase.
Nora Mae Shaffer

Nora Mae Shaffer, 73, of South Eighth Street, Upper Sandusky, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at her home.
She was born May 9, 1927, in Hazzard County, Kentucky to Rufus and Martha Bryant. On February 21, 1947, she married
Paul R. Shaffer, in Greenup, Kentucky. He died October 1, 1988.
Surviving are a daughter, Darlene Kuenzli of Upper Sandusky, two foster children, Fred Larick of Upper Sandusky and Paula Riedel of Lima, a brother, Fred Bryant of Nevada and two sisters, Rosie Riedel and Mrs. Dale (Mary Ann) Sprang, both of Upper Sandusky, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a daughter, Linda Thorton, a grandson, Jeremy Lenhart and a brother, Grover Bryant.
Mrs. Shaffer attended John Stewart Methodist Church in Upper Sandusky. She was a homemaker and a cook for the LK Restaurant in Upper Sandusky and enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching and Polka dancing with her husband.
The service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the Lucas Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky with the Rev. Wayne Geissinger officiating.
Burial will take place at the Oak Hill cemetery, Upper Sandusky. Visitations are today from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Florence A. Scagnetti
Bellevue resident
Florence A. Scagnetti, 85, of 209 Maple Street, Bellevue, died Monday, March 19, 2001, in the Elmwood Nursing Home, Green Springs.
She was born Nov. 10, 1915, in Sandusky, to Fernnando and Maria (Zurma) Macrelli. She married
Louis Scagnetti on Sept.17, 1938 in Sandusky. He died in 1999.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James (Irma) Ramsey and Mrs. Donald (Annette) Smola, both of Bellevue, three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Deceased are a sister, Yolanda Redford, two brothers and a sister in childhood.
Mrs. Scagnetti was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Daughters of Isabella and Four County Young at Heart.
The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church, Bellevue with the Rev. Robert Tucceri officiating. Burial will be at the Bellevue Catholic cemetery in Bellevue.
Visitation is 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at the Foos and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue, with a wake service at 3:30 p.m. followed by a D of I service.
Harold N. Emerine
Autolite/Toledo retiree
Harold N. "Champ" Emerine, 95, of 111 S. Countyline St., Fostoria, died at 3:55 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at his daughter's home in Findlay.
He was born Nov. 7, 1905, in Alvada, to John W. and Theresa (Yost) Emerine. On Oct. 15, 1940, he married
Mary Estelle Higley at St. Wendelin Catholic Church in Fostoria. She died March 10, 2000.
Surviving are a son, John H. Emerine of Alvada, three daughters, Mrs. James (Karen) Lutz of Chatfield, Mrs. Cliff (Rosemary) Gardner of Findlay and Mrs. Darryl (Veronica) Laughlin of Tiffin, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Deceased are eight brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Emerine, a punch press operator at Autolite, Toledo, retired after 28 years of employment. He also was an employee of the Tomato Plant in Bloomdale for seven years and formerly worked of the Knights of Columbus.
A member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria, Mr. Emerine was a 50-year honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1197, Fostoria, a member of the Golden Eagles of Fostoria Eagles 430, and a 1927 graduate of St. Wendelin High School.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria. The rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery..
Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria. A rosary will be prayed at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made in the form of Mass Intentions to the church and Bridge Hospice, Findlay.
Carl F. Park
Brother of Tiffin residents
Carl F. Park, 56, of Old Oak Harbor Road, Fremont, died suddenly Wednesday morning., March 21, 2001 in the emergency room at Memorial Hospital, Fremont.
He was born in Bucyrus, May 1, 1944 to Warren and Betty (Alspach) Park. They survive in Fremont.
Survivors also include: brothers, Ronald, of Fostoria and Eugene of Findlay, sisters Diane Kirschner and Linda Sauber, both of Tiffin, seven nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
A niece is deceased.
Mr. Park, a 1963 Mohawk high school graduate, served in the U.S. Army and Tank Division in the Vietnam Era. He was employed for Burns Security Co. stationed at Kelsey-Hayes.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday in the Nopper-Karlovetz Mortuary, Fremont. Burial with military services by the Fremont American Legion, will be at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Clyde.
Visitations will be 4-6 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.

W. L. "Bill" Stombaugh
Father of Tiffin resident
W. L. 'Bill" Stombaugh, 91, formerly of 619 W. Findlay St., Carey, died at 3:28 p.m., Tuesday, March 20, 2001 in the Wyandot County Nursing Home, Upper Sandusky.
He was born February 25, 1910, in Carey, to Jesse T. and Inez (Logsdon) Stombaugh. On May 5, 1934, he married
Virginia Mae Snobarger, in Angola, Indiana. She died Sept. 3, 2000.
Surviving are a son, John P., London, Oh., a daughter, Mrs. Owen (Phyllis) Burks of Tiffin, two sisters, Luella Feck, Columbus, Mrs. David (Rosely) O'Flaherty, Carey, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Deceased is an infant son, Wilfrid "Billy", three brothers, Charles, Robert and Thomas, a sister Margaret "Peg" Daleska and two half sisters, Irene and Lavonne.
Mr. Stombaugh was superintendent of maintenance and machines at the National Lime and Stone Co., Carey, 1928-1980 when he retired. He was a member of the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation, Carey.
In 1959, Mr. Stombaugh and Sheriff Dean McAllister, formed the Wyandot County Mounted Deputies and in 1989, became captain when it was changed to Auxiliary. He served as an active deputy 1958-1998; was a life member and served as past president of the Buckeye State Mounted Deputies.
A 37-year member of the Carey Fire Department, he served as past Fire Chief.
Other organizations include life member and past exalted ruler of Elks Lodge 83, past president and life member of Buckeye Western Horse Association, Life member of NRA, 60 plus year member of The Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation Choir, Findlay SPEBSQSA and a member of Ohio Arabian Horse Association.
A Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at The Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation, Carey, with the Rev. Benjamin Knopp officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Carey.
Visitation will be 2-9 p.m., Friday at the Batton Funeral Home, Carey, with a 2:00 p.m. Christian Vigil Service and Elk's service at 8:00 p.m..
Memorials mad be made to the Social Fund at Wyandot County Nursing Home, Dorcas Carey Public Library or the church., c/o Batton Funeral Home.
Van R. Kanan
Brother of Tiffin resident
Van R. Kanan, 85, 1708 Emmet Dr., Fremont died at 2:10 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Elmwood Assisted Living, Fremont.
He was born October 13, 1915 in Republic to Albert and Amanda (Cole) Kanan. On Feb. 13, 1943, he married
Mary Jane Gabel in Sacramento, CA. She died Nov.1, 1998.
Survivors include sons, William A. of Worthington, Robert E. of Columbus, Calvin T. of Fremont, James E. of Old Fort, Ronald C. of Snowmass, CO.; a daughter, Amilia Kayes of Kettering, a sister, Zoe Elois Krabill of Tiffin, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Also deceased is a son, Dennis.
Mr. Kanan graduated from high school in 1933, Tiffin University in 1936 and attended Toledo University. He worked as a controller at Fremont Rubber Co., Fremont, Credit Manager at Crown Industries, a public accountant for Gulf Oil and for Price, Waterhouse & Co., Cleveland.
In 1941 he entered the Army Air Corps in 1941 and served 18 months in the Pacific. In 1946, he retired from the Air Force.
Mr. Kanan was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fremont, the Sandusky County Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Cub Scout Master at St. Joseph Church, Civil Conservation Corps - Ohio Power Squadron.
Services will be 9 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, Fremont. Burial will be at St. Joseph cemetery, Tiffin.
Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Keller-Ochs-Koch Funeral Home, Fremont.
Memorials may be made to Liberty Center in Fremont.

Services for Mary L. (Grimes-Kinney) Mackling, 91, of the Ruffing Family Care Center, Tiffin, who died Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at the center will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore. Burial will be in Pleasant View cemetery, Sycamore. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Albinus M. "Al" Gerschutz
Lifelong area farmer
Albinus M. "Al" Gerschutz, 84, of 6477 S. U.S. 23, Alvada, died at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at his home. He was born on Oct. 25, 1916 to John and Florence (Shondal) Gerschutz. On Oct. 19, 1940 he married
Lenore J. Erford, she survives.
Other survivors include: six sons, Donald, Mack and John Gerschutz, all of Alvada, Wayne and Daniel Gerschutz, both of Carey, and Thomas Gerschutz of Tiffin; five daughters, Mrs. Mary Lou Lamberjack of Carey, Mrs. Joan Rumschlag and Mrs. Teresa Kagy of Tiffin, Mrs. Lois Rex Fastinger of Oak harbor and Mrs. Rita Kirian of New Riegel; a brother, Albert Gerschutz of Pandora; five sisters, Mrs. Bernadine Ellerbrock of Leipsic, Sister M. Gilberta Gerschutz, OSF of Tiffin, Mrs. Helen Phillips of Hamler, Mrs. Betty Nowicki of Toledo and Mrs. Rita Maag of Columbus Grove; 36 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
Deceased are: two grandchildren; a brother, Clem Gerschutz and three sisters, Angela Niese, Ida Gilberta "Berta" Phillips and Bernetta Pletcher.
Mr. Gerschutz was a lifelong farmer retiring in 1980. A member of the St. Nicholas Catholic Church of Frenchtown; Seneca County Farm Bureau; Rural Catholic Family of the Diocese of Toledo in 1965 and an Active Cursillo.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church with The Rev. Conrad Sutter OFM Conv. Burial will be at St. Nicholas Parish cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 2-9 p.m., today, at the church. The Rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m.

Wilbert F. Tiell
Former Tiffin resident
Wilbert F. Tiell, 90, of Barberton, IN., formerly of the Tiffin area died, on Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at Pleasantview Health Care Center. He was born Oct. 29, 1910 near Tiffin to Albert and Ida Elizabeth Tiell. His first marriage was to Mary Reidrman who died. His second marriage was to Dorothy, and she survives.
Other survivors include: a stepson, James Gleason of Strongsville; two step-grandsons, Jonathan and Joseph Gleason; two brothers, Edgar Tiell of Hampstead, MD., and Nicholas Tiell of Amelia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Deceased are: three sisters, Mary Quinn, Agnes Tally and Helen Tiell; and a brother Leonard Tiell.
Mr. Tiell moved to Barberton in 1936 and was employed by Babcock & Wilcox Company for 36 years retiring in 1974. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and also the B&W 20 year Club; AARP 1104 and Lockwood Senior Citizens Club.
The funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hahn-Hostetler Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic cemetery in Tiffin.
Visitation hours are from 6-9 p.m., tonight at the funeral home.
James L. Little Sr.
Tiffin Foundry employee
James L. Little, Sr., 65, of 41 Bobb St., Tiffin, died at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2001. He was born on March 22, 1935 to William Price and Mary (Sorrell) Little. On July 11, 1956 he married
Opal F. Dunn, and she survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, James L. Little, Jr. of Fort Wayne, Ind., and John D. Little of Tiffin; a daughter, Mrs. Emily Kay Derr of Tiffin; three brothers, Herbert Little of London, Ky., Leonard Little of Tiffin, and Charlie Little of Whitesburg, Ky.; three sisters, Mrs. Geraldine Slosser of Tiffin, Mrs. Junie Reed of Whitesburg, KY, and Mrs. Maggie Brown of Tiffin; and seven grandchildren.
Deceased are: two sisters, Juanita Saylers and Ruth Rackey.
Mr. Little, Sr. is a U.S. Army Veteran serving from 1950-1954 during the Korean War. He worked as a molder for Tiffin Foundry. Memberships included Sandusky Freewill Baptist Church, VFW Lifetime Member and a Kentucky Colonel.
Pastor Leonard Little will officiate the Private Funeral Services.
There are no visitation hours.
The United Veterans Council will conduct Military Rites at the Turner-Engle Funeral Home.
