Bascom homemaker

Bernadine M. Depinet, 85, of SR 18, Bascom, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, in St. Francis Home. The funeral Mass will be at noon Wednesday in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Bascom and visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home, where further arrangements are pending.

William M. Niebel
Retired Sycamore farmer

William M. Niebel, 88, formerly of 4739 CH 16, Sycamore, died at 7:45 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, in the Wyandot County Nursing Home, Upper Sandusky, where he resided.

He was born Jan. 6, 1913, in Sycamore, to Orville and Marcella (Musser) Niebel. On May 22, 1937, in McConnelsville, Ohio, he married Lucille Cole. She survives.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Doyle (Judy) Smith of Shelbyville, Mich., and Mrs. Ed (Karen) Goodman of Cuero, Texas; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Walter (Catharine) Kelley of Juno Beach, Fla.

A son, Timothy Niebel died in 1984 and a half sister and half brother, also are deceased.

Mr. Niebel, a retired farmer, also worked as an assistant at the former Moore Funeral Home, now the Walton-Moore Funeral Home in Sycamore for many years.

A former active member of the Sycamore Lions Club, he was a member of the Mohawk Historical Society, Enterprise Lodge 579 Free and Accepted Masons, Sycamore, and the United Church of Christ, Sycamore, where he served as a former choir director for many years.

A 1931 graduate of Sycamore High School, he served as a former trustee of the Pleasant Ridge cemetery Association and trustee emeritus of Mohawk Community Library, where he also served as trustee for many years.

The Rev. Edgar Shelly will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Thursday service in Sycamore United Church of Christ. Interment will be in Pleasant Ridge cemetery, Sycamore.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the Walton-Moore Funeral Home, where a Masonic memorial service will take place at 8:45 p.m. The body also will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service Thursday.

Memorials may be made to the Mohawk Community Library or the church.

Edna M. Walter
Homemaker/clerical worker

Edna M. Walter, 86, formerly of rural Carey, died at 12:10 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, in the Fox Run Manor Nursing Home, Findlay. Arrangements are pending at the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey.

Dorothy J. 'Dot' Shilling
Fremont Speedway founder

Dorothy J. "Dot" (VanBuskirk) Shilling, 73, of Meadow Lane, Gibsonburg, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, in the Bethesda Care Center.

She was born May 30, 1927, in Haskins, Ohio, to the late Nelson and Edith (Cummings) VanBuskirk. She first married Joe Stelter, who died in 1962. Her present husband, William H. "Bill" Shilling, whom she married June 29, 1976, in Monroe, Mich., survives in Gibsonburg.

Survivors also include: a daughter, Lori Laurer of Fremont; a son, Scott Szakovits of Clyde; two stepsons, Timothy Shilling of Tiffin and Todd Shilling of Fremont; two brothers, Don and Vernon VanBuskirk, both of Michigan; a sister, Leila Jennings of Florida; her former husband, Paul Szakovits of Fremont; and eight grandchildren.

Also preceding her death were two brothers, Wayne and Gerald VanBuskirk.

Mrs. Shilling, known as "The First Lady of Fremont Speedway," founded the Fremont Speedway with her husband Joe Stelter in 1951, where they had the first race on Sept. 30.

Upon his death she made the decision to become one of two women promoters in the country. She and her second husband, Paul Szakovits, continued to run the Fremont Speedway and purchased the Findlay Speedway in 1967 and ran it until 1970. Mrs. Shilling continued to operate the Fremont Speedway until 1977, when she sold it and still continued to work there as a secretary and office manager until it was sold in 1995.

With her late husband Joe Stelter, she started into racing by working as a track official in different speedways in Flat Rock, Monroe, Adrian, Fort Miami, Raceway Park and Motor City Speedway in Detroit.

She also had founded the Fremont Flea Market in 1982 and started the Sunny Acres Trailer Lot and Sales.

A member of the Fremont Christian Women's Club, she served 1965-85 as president of Andrews Concession Stands, which served various fairs and festivals in Northwest Ohio.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Victory Christian Fellowship, with the Rev. Scott Robles officiating. Interment will be in McPherson cemetery, Clyde.

Memorials may be made to Easter Seals or the church.

The Wonderly-Horvath Funeral Home, Fremont, is in charge of arrangements.

James R. Berry Sr.
Self-employed contractor

James R. Berry Sr., 53, died early Monday morning, Feb. 19, 2001, at his residence at 426 S. Town St., Fostoria.

He was born April 10, 1947, in Collinwood, Tenn., to Hershel H. Berry, who survives in Florida and Estella (Ketten) May, who survives in Toledo. On July 22, 1978, in Batavia, Ohio, he married Helen F. Shackelford,. She survives in Fostoria.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Valerie Renae Hall of Ft. Hood, Texas and Andrea Lynn Rickett of Old Fort, N.C.; five sons, James Robert Berry Jr. of Hendersonville, N.C., Anthony Blaine Berry of Burnsville, N.C. and Ricky R., Donald R. and James Robert II Berry, all of Fostoria; 10 grandchildren; two sisters, Reba May Watson of Toledo and Martha Lou Berry of Michigan; and eight brothers, Kenneth, Jerry, Byron and Micky Berry, all of Toledo, Benny and Bill Berry, both of Owensboro, Ky., Myron Berry of Cincinnati and Ricky Berry of LaGrange, Ky.

Mr. Berry, a self-employed contractor, was the owner and operator of Berry Construction in Fostoria.

The Rev. Paul E. Myers will conduct the 11 a.m. Wednesday service in the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospice Care of Seneca County or the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria.

Bernadine M. Depinet
Bascom resident

Bernadine M. Depinet, 85, of 5515 W. SR 18, Bascom, died at 9:23 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, in St. Francis Home.

She was born Aug. 1, 1915, in Loudon Township, Seneca County, to Otto and Mary (Scherger) Brickner. Her husband, Carl Depinet, whom she married June 7, 1939, in St. Andrews Catholic Church, rural Bascom, survives.

Survivors also include: six sons, Edward and David Depinet, both of Tiffin, Steven Depinet of Fostoria, Dennis Depinet of Bascom, Donald Depinet of Westfield, Ind. and Michael Depinet of Carmel, Ind.; five daughters, Mrs. Louis (Joanne) Smith of Fremont, Mrs. Robert (Doris) Powell of Sanford, N.C., Mrs. Ron (Betty) Cain of Ottawa Lake, Mich., Mrs. Joe (Martha) Uveges of Louisville, Ky. and Margaret "Meg" Mizen of Tiffin; 33 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Three brothers, Arthur, Urban and Cleophas Brickner, also are deceased.

A homemaker, Mrs. Depinet was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Bascom, its Rosary Altar Society and the Council of Catholic Women.

A funeral Mass will take place at noon Wednesday in St. Patrick Catholic Church, with the Rev. Art Niewiadomski as celebrant. The rosary will be recited at the church 15 minutes prior to the Mass Wednesday. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation is 2-9 p.m. today in the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home, where the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Vedna M. Walter
Homemaker/secretary

Vedna M. Walter, 86, of 116 Larkins St., Findlay, formerly of rural Carey, died at 12:10 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, in the Fox Run Manor, Findlay.

She was born June 8, 1914, in Hardin County, to Greeley and Pearl (Patrick) Marshall, and later moved to Hancock County. On Dec. 24, 1932, she married David E. Walter. He preceded her in death June 2, 1971.

Surviving are three sons, Benjamin, Thomas and Daniel Walter, all of Carey; three daughters, Carol Earick of Moneta, Va., Mrs. Allen (Linda) Baker of Yorktown, Va. and Sarah Wilson of Reynoldsburg; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; and six sisters, Helen Walter of Carey, Irene Lewis of North Port, Fla., Frances Thomas of Carroll, Ohio, Grace Young of Amanda, Ohio, Faye Nemeth of Gainesville, Fla. and Geraldine Kaluza of Parma.

Three sisters, two brothers, a grandson and a daughter, Jane Tucker, also are deceased.

Mrs. Walter, a homemaker, also worked as a secretary for Walter Brothers Auctioneers Inc. and in retail sales in Women's Apparel.

A 1932 graduate of Vanlue High School, she was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, Carey and its United Methodist Women.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Memorial United Methodist Church, with Pastor Paul W. Goetz officiating. Interment will be in Zion Bloom cemetery, Vanlue.

Visitation will be 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. Wednesday in the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey and at the church 10-11 a.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be made to the church, in care of the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey, OH 43316-1169.

Martha E. Drown
Farm wife/homemaker

Martha E. Drown, 77, of 8531 N. Seneca CR 29, Bellevue, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, in the Bellevue Hospital, following a long illness.

She was born Dec. 26, 1923, in Bellevue, to Harry L. and Mary Marguerite (Miller) Kaufman. Her husband, Clarence W. Drown, whom she married Feb. 16, 1947, in Bellevue, survives.

Other survivors include: a son, William A. Drown of Bellevue; a daughter, Mrs. James (Mary E. Drown) McKenzie of Lorain; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Wanda M. Kaufman Isaac of Bellevue.

Mrs. Drown, a farmwife and homemaker, also worked at the former Standard Oil Service Station on Main Street in Bellevue during World War II and prepared income tax returns for others.

A graduate of the former York High School, she was a long-time member of Seybert United Methodist Church and served as a volunteer at Historic Lyme Village for many years.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, baking and was known for her caring for others with food, visits and phone calls.

The Rev. Art Tobergte Jr. will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Wednesday service in Seybert United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Flat Rock cemetery.

Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in the Harris Funeral Home, Bellevue.

Memorials may be made to Seybert United Methodist Church, 442 W. Main St., Bellevue, OH 44811 or Historic Lyme Village, SR 4, Bellevue.

Billy Lee Linden
Retired NASA security worker

Billy Lee Linden, 62, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at his residence on Hancock Street, Sandusky.

He was born June 1, 1938, in Fremont, to the late Albert and Pearl (Mason) Linden. He never married .

Survivors are a niece, Jada Watkiins of Clyde; and a special friend, Nanette Guss of Sandusky.

A brother, Rodney Linden, died in 1949 and a sister, Alberta Watkins died in 2000.

Mr. Linden received his education in the Clyde schools and graduated from the American School in Chicago.

He was employed in security at NASA in Plumbrook for 31 years, retiring in 1997.

Also an artist and designer, he painted pictures of mail pouch barns and developed a figurine of the Linden Moon Bottle, commemorating the landing on the moon.

A member of Sandusky American Legion, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany 1960-63.

The Rev. Lewis Straub will conduct the 11 a.m. Saturday service in the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde. Interment will be in McPherson cemetery, Clyde.

Visitation will be one half hour before the service at the funeral home Saturday.

Retta LaFaun Plott
Centenarian/nursing home employee

Retta LaFaun Plott, 102, of 2100 Carlin St., Findlay, died at 9:10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, in the Winebrenner Village, Findlay.

She was born Aug. 26, 1898, in Wyandot County, to William M. and Ida May (Rummel) Benjamin. Her husbands, Truman Ward, Michael Dumm and Dewey Plott, all preceded her in death.

Surviving are a son, Norman Ward of Wharton; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Shirley) Scanland and Mrs. Kenneth (Janiece) Koontz, both of Findlay; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were a granddaughter, two brothers, Lon and Lloyd Benjamin; and two sisters, Aura Pugh and Zella Kear.

Mrs. Plott was formerly employed at the Fairhaven Home in Upper Sandusky.

She was a member of Wharton United Methodist Church, its United Methodist Women, Mt. Blanchard Senior Citizens and a former member of Lincoln and Salem Granges, both of Wyandot County.

Pastor Joe Searfoss was the officiant at the 11 a.m. Wednesday service in the Shields Funeral Home, Forest. Interment was in Wharton-Richland cemetery, Wharton.

Memorials may be made to the Wharton United Methodist Church, in care of the Shields Funeral Home, 301 S. Patterson St., Forest, OH 45843.

Doris I. Gottfried
Homemaker/family farmer

Doris I. Gottfried, 83, of CR 47, Upper Sandusky, died at 5:35 am. Wednesday, Feb.22, 2001, in the Wyandot Manor Nursing Home, Upper Sandusky, where she had resided since Nov. 1997.

She was born Jan. 24, 1918, in Salem Township, Wyandot County, to Walter Scott and Mata Ida Marie (Gohl) Gottfried.

A brother, Ervin Gottfried, survives in Upper Sandusky.

Miss Gottfried, a homemaker, also helped her brother on the family farm in Salem Township, where she had resided all her life.

A 1936 graduate of Salem High School, she was a life member of North Salem Lutheran Church, Upper Sandusky and its Women of the Church. She had also served as a former Sunday School teacher.

She also was a member of the Wyandot Tracers, Sandusky Valley Archaeological Society and Hospital Guild.

The service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday in North Salem Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Jack K. Moore officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission cemetery, Upper Sandusky.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday in the Bringman Clark and Co.Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky and at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Memorials may be made to the church or Hospice of Wyandot County, in care of the Bringman-Clark and Company Funeral Home, P.O. Box 246, Upper Sandusky, OH 43351.
