Shirley Ann Stears
Sister of Republic resident

Shirley Ann Stears, 71, of 1514 Washington Ave., Findlay, died at 12:37 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, in the Medical College of Ohio Hospital, Toledo.

She was born May 12, 1929, in Buffalo, N.Y., to Scott B. and Grace (Kingsbury) McCafferty. On May 29, 1948, she married Alvin Clouse and they were later divorced. On Nov. 25, 1976, she married Kenneth E. Stears, who preceded her in death Nov. 19, 1996.

Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Vernon (Sharon) Burkholder of Republic; a son, Scott Clouse of Columbus; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Ted (Patricia) Hamilton of Miamisburg and Mrs. Maureen VanDrie of Manistee, Mich.

A brother, Sandy McCafferty, also is deceased.

Mrs. Stears, who retired from the U.S. Post Office in Findlay, after 18 years of service, recently had worked at Hubbard Press, also of Findlay.

A licensed amatuer radio operator, she was a member of the Findlay Radio Club, the Drifters Card Club, VFW Post 5645 Auxiliary and the DAV Post 43 Auxiliary, all of Findlay.

A 1947 graduate of Dunkirk High School, she attended the Howard United Methodist Church, Findlay.

The Rev. Deborah K. Stevens will be the officiant at the 1 p.m. Tuesday service in the Kirkpatrick-Behnke Funeral Home, Findlay. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery, Findlay.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home where DAV Auxiliary memorial services will be at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans Buddy Chapter 43, 201 E. Front St., Findlay, OH 45840 or a charity of the donor's choice.

Vernon H. Claus
Fourth generation farmer

Vernon H. Claus, 82, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at his residence on Pontiac Section Line Road, Bellevue.

He was born April 22, 1918, in Norwich Township, Huron County, to Fred J. and Katherine M. (Schreiner) Claus. His wife, Clara Mabel (Switzer) Claus, whom he married May 31, 1947, survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Larry E. Claus of Bellevue, Joseph V. Claus of Milan and Steven C. Claus of Concord, N.C.; five grandchildren; and a brother, Walter Claus of Bellevue.

Also preceding him in death were a granddaughter, Melissa Michelle Claus; four brothers, Clarence M., Albert E., Ralph Fredrich and Ralph Joseph Claus; and two sisters, Anna M. Willmand and Rosa M. Claus.

Mr. Claus, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, having served in the South African and Egypt campaigns, was the fourth generation of Claus family to farm the family farm. He also farmed the Geyer-Ringe estate.

He formerly worked at the Bellevue Candy Co. and Whirlpool and retired from NW Railroad.

He received his education in St. Sebastian Parish School and was a member of Huron County Farm Bureau, Bellevue VFW and St. Sebastian Catholic Church.

He also served as a Sherman Township trustee.

A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Sebastian Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Nagle officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the Auxter-Groff Funeral Home, Bellevue, where the rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m.Tuesday. Memorials may be made to Sandusky County Hospice, South Main Street, Clyde, OH 43410.

Anna M. Wasserman
Seneca County native

Anna M. Wasserman, 77, of 1521 W. McGormley Road, Fremont, died at 12:10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2000, in Memorial Hospital, Fremont.

She was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Seneca County, to Albert and Leona (Houck) Benner. Her first husband, Oscar Babione, whom she married in 1942, died in 1952. On Sept. 17, 1955, she married Ervin Wasserman, who survives in Fremont.

Other survivors include: four daughters, Suzanne Michael, Catherine Miller and Flossie Swint, all of Fremont, and Marilyn Babione of Chicago; three sons, Tom Babione and Michael Wasserman, both of Fremont, and Willie Babione of Willard; 23 grandchildren, two foster grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Walter Benner of Tiffin and Virgil Benner of Huron; and three sisters, Mary Shafer of Bucyrus, Doris Weikert of McCutchenville and Betty Cooper of Tucson, Ariz.

Two grandchildren; two brothers, Herman and Louis Benner; and four sisters, Marjorie Turner, Alma Price and Bernice and Catherine Benner, are deceased.

Mrs. Wasserman, a homemaker, was a 1940 graduate of Scipio-Republic High School.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fremont, the Confraturnity of Blessed Sacrament and different bowling leagues and card clubs.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fremont, with burial following in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the Keller-Ochs-Koch Funeral Home, Fremont.

Memorials may be made to the Catholic Education Development Fund or St. Joe School Playground Fund.

James Edward Sertell Sr.
Tiffin resident's brother

James Edward Sertell Sr., 92, of Yauger Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, in the Country Club Retirement Center, Mount Vernon.

He was born Jan. 9, 1908, in Tiffin, to James D. and Bertha (Ardner) Sertell. His wife of 31 years, Margaret (Brower) Sertell, survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, James E. Sertell Jr. of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Thomas Sertell of Mansfield; a step-daughter, Mrs. Donald (Shirley) Hillier of Mount Vernon; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Francis Sertell of Tiffin; and a sister, Mary Heddens of South Bend, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Hale Sertell; and three brothers, Paul, Louis and Richard Sertell.

Mr. Sertell, the owner and manager of the Sertell Hotel and Restaurant in Fredericktown, also worked with Prudential Insurance in Mansfield before retiring in 1975 from the City of Mount Vernon.

He served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant during World War II, where he received the Purple Heart.

He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, VFW Post 4027, American Legion Post 136 and the Elks and Moose Lodges, all of Mount Vernon.

A memorial Mass took place Monday in St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church. Military services were provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church Building Fund, 303 E. High St., Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050 or Hospice of Knox County, 302 E. High St., Mount Vernon.

Sue Anne Gossett Dixon
Mother of A-T advertising director

Sue Anne Gossett Dixon, 61, of Sarasota, Fla.., died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, in Sarasota.

She was born July 23, 1939, in Ashland, Ky., to the late John and Helen (Sweeney) Gossett.

Survivors include: two daughters, Jennifer Elliott of Ada and Catharine Diroff of Sarasota; a son, Christopher Dixon of Tiffin; a brother, Robert Gossett; and a grandson, Matthew.

Mrs. Dixon, a retired condo rental manager, was a 1957 graduate of the Holy Family College, Ashland, Ky.

She was a member of the Church of the Incarnation and Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, both of Sarasota; the Vista Hermosa Condo Association, Siesta Key and Sarasota, Fla. and the Holy Family Alumni Association, Ashland.

She had moved to Sarasota from Kenton, Ohio 12 years ago.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Calvary cemetery. The Wiegand Brothers Funeral Home, Sarasota, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Gulf Gate Elementary School Sue Dixon Memorial Fund, 6500 S. Lockwood Ridge Road, Sarasota, Fla. 34231.

Shirley J. 'Brenda' Houck
Kuss Corp. fabricator

Shirley J. "Brenda" Houck, 47, of 1326 S. TR, Fostoria, died at 11:50 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, in the Toledo Hospital.

She was born Jan. 22, 1953, in Stopover, Ky., to the late Troy and Louvenia (Charles) Blankenship. She first married Jerry Spitnale in 1975, and they divorced in 1988. On July 18, 1997, she married Michael J. Houck, who survives.

Survivors also include: a son, Terry L. Spitnale of Gilboa; two step-sons, Michael J. Houck of Bloomville and Nathan J. Houck of Tiffin; a daughter, Mrs. Jesse J. (Carrie A.) Erb of rural Arlington; a step-daughter, Nicole Houck, at home; a granddaughter; and 10 brothers and sisters..

She also was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Mrs. Houck, a member of West Independence United Methodist Church, worked as a fabricator for 24 years at Kuss Corp. in Findlay.

The Rev. Jeffrey Raker will be the officiate at the 1 p.m. Wednesday service in West Independence United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Union cemetery, West Independence.

Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today in the Coldren-Crates Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be made to the West Independence United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Regina B. Ray
Former Columbian cafeteria employee

Regina B. Ray, 82, of Tiffin, died at 8:20 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, in St. Francis Home.

She was born Feb. 19, 1918, in Wheeling, W.Va., to Patrick and Honora (Buckley) King. On Feb. 22, 1943, in New Castle, Pa., she married Charles M. Ray, who survives.

Other survivors include: four daughters, Mrs. Richard (Barbara) Kuhn of Sun City, Ariz., Mrs. Frank (Patti) Redman of Charlotte, N.C., Mrs. Donald (Cathe) Hammer of Tiffin and Mrs. Theodore (Terri) Temper of Huron; a sister, Mrs. Thomas (Josephine) Connors of LaJolla, Calif.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were a brother, Frank King; and eight sisters, Catherine Dumar, Ann Anderson, Agnes Sullivan, Genevieve Garrison, Mary Munhall, Margaret King, Helen Gallagher and Norma Smith.

Mrs. Ray, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and its Rosary Altar Society, retired as a recreation leader for the City of Pittsburgh, Pa. She also had worked at Columbian High School cafeteria.

A graduate of Sacred Heart High School, Pittsburgh, she attended Duquesne University.

She also was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Ladies Catholic Bowling Association.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph Catholic Church with Msgr. Edward Dunn as celebrant. The rosary will be recited at the church at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, along with the Chaplette of Divine Mercy.

A funeral Mass also will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. George Catholic Church/St. John Vianney Parish, Allen Avenue, Pittsburgh. Burial will follow the service Saturday in St. George cemetery, Pittsburg.

Private family viewing will be at the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or a charity of the donor's choice.

Donald K. Shellhouse
Atlas Crankshaft retiree

Donald K. Shellhouse, 80, 13 Marlyn St., died at 2:50 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, in the Autumnwood Care Center.

He was born July 20, 1920, in Sycamore, Wyandot County, to Claire and Margaret (Deleplane) Shellhouse. His wife, Frances M. (Heyman) Shellhouse, whom he married June 1, 1941, in the First Lutheran Church, Tiffin, preceded him in death June 6, 1996.

Survivors include: a son, David L. Shellhouse of Tiffin; two daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Barbara) Mizen Jr. and Lori Zerman, both of Tiffin; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Donna; two sons, Donald and Thomas; two brothers, Gilbert and Kenneth; and two infant grandchildren, also are deceased.

Mr. Shellhouse, a World War II U.S. Army Air Corp veteran, having served as a supply sergeant 1942-45, retired in 1979 from the Atlas Crankshaft in Fostoria, after 17 years as a lathe operator. He also worked for the B & O Railroad for 26 years as a ticket agent.

Foundly referred to by friends and family as "Seneca Slim" he was a faithful Cleveland Indians fan.

He was a member of Eagles 402, Tiffin VFW 2858 and the Military Order of Cooties, where he was a life member and past commander. He also served as a Deputy at Sandusky Veterans Home for several years.

An avid hunter, fisherman and pool player, he also was a member of the Amateur Pool Association, having won numerous awards and trophys including the 'Gentleman Pool Player of the Year.'

Graveside services took place Tuesday in Seneca Memory Gardens, where military graveside services were conducted by the United Veterans Council. The Rev. Larry Wagner officiated

There was no visitation. The Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Mercy Home Care, Autumnwood Care Center or a charity of the donor's choice.

Doris L. Dunn
Rural Fostoria homemaker

Doris L. Dunn, 78, of 2468 Courtly Road, Fostoria, died at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, in the Fostoria Community Hospital.

She was born Dec. 29, 1921, in Martin, Ohio, to Otto and Mary (Klingbeil) Buss. On June 21, 1943, in Green Cove Springs, Fla., she married John C. "Jack" Dunn, who survives in Fostoria.

Other survivors include: a son, Brad F. Dunn of Pennsylvania; a daughter, Beverly A. Fisher of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

Also preceding her in death were four sisters, Lil Stick, Rose Buck, Ida Rice and Augusta Marlow.

A homemaker, Mrs. Dunn was a member of the Fostoria Country Club.

She was a graduate of both Elmore High School, Elmore and Davis Business College in Toledo.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Knollcrest Gardens Chapel, near Arcadia. Interment will follow in Knollcrest Gardens.

Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today in the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

James E. Bird
Crane operator

James E. Bird, 53, 264 Second Ave., died at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000 in Mercy Hospital of Tiffin.

He was born July 2, 1947, in Tiffin, to Earl I. and Virginia (Whitmer) Bird. His mother survives in Tiffin. He never married .

Survivors also include nieces and nephews, a brother, William A. Bird of Tiffin; and three sisters, Ruth Ann Cardwell, Geraldine Wilson and Pamela Sue Bird.

His father; and a brother, Frank L. Bird, also are deceased.

Mr. Bird, who lived his lifetime in Tiffin, was employed as a crane operator at Rosenblatt's.

The Rev. Gilbert Purdue will be the officiant at the 1:30 p.m. Friday service in the Turner-Engle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Fairmont cemetery.

Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to his family.
