Dr. James V. Veel
Genetic researcher
Information was received from the Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore, regarding the death of Dr. James V. Veel, 84, of Ann Arbor, Mich., on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000.
Dr. Veel was born to Hiram and Minette (Van Gundia) Veel. His grandparents were the late James and Ina Van Gundia of Sycamore. He married
Pricella Veel, who survives, along with three children, Alex, James and Frances.
Dr. Veel's work helped uncover the genetic basis of sickle cell anemia and led extensive studies of radiation's effects on the survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. He was an emeritus professor of human genetics and internal medicine at University of Michigan. His most recent research focused on viruses perhaps associated with genetic mutations that some researchers speculate could lead to cancer. He was acting director of field studies for the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission.
A memorial service will be at a later date at the University of Michigan.
Cloyce L. Waltz
Retired farmer
Cloyce L. Waltz, 82, of 16901 E. Twp. Rd. 46, Attica, died unexpectedly early Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at his Palmetto, Florida, winter residence.
Mr. Waltz was born May 31, 1917, in Huron County to Gail H. and Emma M. (Biettner) Waltz. He married
Naomi R. Auck on April 12, 1941, and she died Nov. 21, 1983. He then married
Ruth E. Johnson of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Aug. 24, 1985, and she survives.
Also surviving are: a son, Carl Waltz of E. Amherst, NY; two daughters, Donna Detterman of Bucyrus and Carol Helbling of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two step-sons, Jim Johnson of Osprey, Fla. and Ken Johnson of Oshawa, Ontario, Canada; two step-daughters, Lynn Rehbein and Joanne Wachal, both of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; seven grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.
A sister, Kathryn I. Williams, preceded him in death.
After graduating from Attica high school in 1935, he was engaged in farming until his retirement; a member of Union Pisgah United Methodist Church, Attica Lions Club, Car Coddlers Club, Past Board Member of Leisure Lake Village, Fla.; and attended First Methodist Church of Palmetto, Fla.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Lindsey-Foos-Kocher Funeral Home, Attica, with the Rev. Stephen Holliday officiating. Burial will be in Attica Venice cemetery.
Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home where a Lions Club memorial service will be at 6:30 p.m.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to Union Pisgah United Methodist Church, Attica Lions Club, or American Diabetes Association.
Esta M. Smith
Retired Bendix employee
Esta M. Smith, 72, of Maple Street, Fostoria, died at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, in her home.
She was born on Feb. 23, 1928, in Holister, to William and Nelva (Tremain) Sheridan. She married
Carl T. Smith Aug. 27, 1950, in Rossville, Ga.
In addition to her husband, survivors include: two sons, Kevin T. of Kansas and Erin L. of Fostoria; two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Carla) Coffey of Columbus and Mrs. John (Melanee) Kimble of Fostoria; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, William R. Sheridan of Findlay; and two sisters, Wilma Cessna of Kansas and Nona Freeman of Wadena, Mn.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Ryan Coffey; four brothers, Leslie, Albert, Lloyd and Glen Sheridan; and a sister, Mabel Larcum.
She graduated in 1947 from Fostoria high school; was an inspector at Bendix (now Honeywell) for 32 years and retired in 1980; a member of the Fostoria Baptist Church and church choir.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria, with the Rev. David Chapman officiating. Interment will be in Knollcrest cemetery near Arcadia.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Fostoria Baptist Church or American Diabetes Association.
Ellen M. Oakleaf
Rural Green Springs homemaker
Ellen M. Oakleaf, 81, of 6572 SR 19, Green Springs, died at her residence Monday, Feb. 28, 2000.
She was born in Tiffin Feb. 25, 1919, to Clarence A. and Vera M. (Rober) Lorentz. Her husband, Paul F. Oakleaf, whom she married
in St. Joseph's Rectory, died June 14, 1992.
Survivors include: a son, Paul F. Oakleaf of rural Green Springs; five daughters, Mrs. Dale (Alice) Rapp of Lookeba, Okla., Mrs. Ronald (Carol) Tuckerman, Mrs. Richard (Barbara) Berger and Mrs. Fred (Donna) Decker, all of the Fremont area, and Mrs. Joan Jackson of Toledo; 21 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence Lorentz of Monroe, Mich.; and three sisters, Lucille Wott of Clyde and Eileen Feasel and Margaret "Peg" Weisenberger, both of Tiffin.
Also preceding her in death were a son, Richard E. Oakleaf; a brother, Paul W. Lorentz; and two sisters, Mary Ann Kahler and Ruth Lawson.
Mrs. Oakleaf, a homemaker, had lived her lifetime in the Seneca County area.
A member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Green Springs, she was a 1937 graduate of Columbian High School.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Engle-Young Funeral Home of Green Springs, with the Rev. Andrew S. Angel officiating. Burial will be in Seneca Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Wednesday and one hour before the service Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the church.
Richard Lee Theis
Theis Construction Co. co-owner
Richard Lee Theis, 63, 1809 Driftwood Drive, died of a sudden aortic aneurysm, at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, in Renfro Valley, Ky., en route home from Florida.
He was born in Tiffin June 5, 1936, to Alex P. and Victoria T. (Kessler) Theis. His mother survives in Tiffin. On March 2, 1957, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fremont, he married
Shirley Ann Morris. She survives.
Other survivors include: three sons, Mark T. Theis of Port Charlotte, Fla., Michael T. Theis of Republic and Richard A. Theis of New Riegel; a daughter, Melissa (Theis) Kramer of Tiffin; two sisters, Donna Frankart of Findlay and Joyce Lynch of Ft. Myers, Fla.; a brother, William Theis of Tiffin; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
His father is deceased.
Mr. Theis, a 1954 Calvert High School graduate, was the co-owner of Theis Construction Co.
On Dec. 16, 1994, he underwent a bone marrow transplant that successfully cured his leukemia.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Tiffin Moose Lodge, Home Builder Association, National Concrete Association and the Ohio Ready Mixed Concrete Association.
The Rev. Frank Murd and the Rev. William Rose will be the con-celebrants at the 10 a.m. Thursday (which is the Theis' wedding anniversary) funeral Mass in St. Mary Catholic Church. The rosary will be recited at the church 15 minutes prior to the Mass Thursday. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Wednesday in the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home, where a Wake service will be at 3:30 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the church or the Leukemia Society.
Leroy C. Kuntz
Retired Mifflin Township farmer
Leroy C. Kuntz, 80, died at 3:57 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at his home at 14207 SH 53 W., Mifflin Township, Upper Sandusky.
He was born Nov. 22, 1919, in Wyandot County, to Albert and Susan (Frey) Kuntz. On Oct. 21, 1941, in Frenchtown, he married
Catherine L. Reinhart. She survives.
Also surviving are nieces and nephews; and five sisters, Alfrieda Schaffert of Fostoria, Luella T. Rall and Mary E. Jaqueth, both of Upper Sandusky and Deloris B. Thiel and Donna M. Thiel, both of Kirby.
Also preceding him in death were a brother, Carl, and a sister, Lillian, who died in infancy.
Mr. Kuntz, a retired Mifflin Township farmer, had worked in a factory for a short time during World War II.
He was a member of the Wyandot County Senior Citizens Club, AARP, the Wyandot County Farm Bureau and St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kirby, where he served as an Eucharistic lay minister. He was a former member of both the church's former Holy Name Society and the K of C.
He enjoyed playing cards, visiting the senior center and friends at nursing homes, attending the Wyandot County Fair and day trips.
The Rev. James Holmer will be the celebrant at the 10:30 a.m. Wednesday funeral Mass in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kirby. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in the Bringman-Clark and Company Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky, where a Biblical scripture service will be at 8:30 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the church, St. Peter's Catholic School Endowment Fund, Wyandot Memorial Hospital, Hospice of Wyandot County or the Wyandot County Home Health.
Paul E. Weaver
Former gas/appliance store owner
Paul E. Weaver, 86, of 718 Chestnut Drive, Upper Sandusky, died at 8:12 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, in Wyandot Memorial Hospital, Upper Sandusky.
He was born Jan. 30, 1914, in Upper Sandusky, to Joseph E. and Emma (Brooks) Weaver. His wife, Mary E. (Miller) Weaver, whom he married
May 30, 1939, in Upper Sandusky, survives.
Survivors also include: a brother, Carl J. Weaver and a sister, Margaret K. Young, both of Upper Sandusky.
Two sisters, Alice Henicker and Rita J. Healy, also are deceased.
Mr. Weaver, a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Upper Sandusky, was the owner/operator of the former Weaver Gas and Appliance for more than 50 years.
Also a member of K of C 2050 and Eagles, both of Upper Sandusky, he enjoyed traveling, new cars, shopping and wintering in Florida.
A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Bringman-Clark and Company Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. James Homer officiating. Interment will be in St. Peter's Catholic cemetery, Upper Sandusky.
Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Wyandot County Home Health.
Kenneth Stanton
Stepfather of Tiffin residents
Kenneth Stanton, 82, of 930 N. Middlebelt Road, Garden City, Mich., died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, in the Annapolis Center Emergency Room, Wayne, Mich.
He was born in West Jefferson Aug. 6, 1918, to Lawrence and Cassie (Morgan) Stanton. On Dec. 26, 1950, he married
Mabel G. Shauan Brownell. She died Nov. 21, 1983.
Surviving are a stepson, Arthur J. Brownell, and a stepdaughter, Grace E. Brownell Johnson, both of Tiffin; seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Stanton was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving as a cook 1941-49. He retired as an assembly worker from General Motors after 28 years.
He was a member of the United Auto Workers, Ypsilanti, Mich.
The Rev. Larry Smith will conduct the 11 a.m. Wednesday service in the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home. Burial will be in Fairmont cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home Wednesday.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Bernard Albert Gregg
Ford Motor retiree
Bernard Albert Gregg, 79, of Vine Street, Clyde, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, in the Bellevue Hospital.
He was born in Detroit, Mich., April 23, 1920, to Percy and Rose (Novak) Gregg. His wife, Mary C. (Potter) Gregg, whom he married
Feb. 11, 1954, survives.
Other survivors include: a son, David Gregg of Clyde; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Steve (Marie) Sienko of Belleville, Mich.
A son, John Gregg, died in 1997 and a brother, Robert Gregg, also is deceased.
Mr. Gregg, a 1938 graduate of Bellevue High School, retired in 1980 as a maintenance foreman/plant engineer, from the Ford Motor Co. in Sandusky, after 38 years.
A master sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the CBL Theater, he also served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
A resident of the Clyde area since 1955, he was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Clyde.
The Rev. Jeff Nordhaus will be the officiant at the 10:30 a.m. Thursday service in the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde. Interment will be in McPherson cemetery, Clyde.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
