Freda M. LaBrie
Mother of Tiffin resident

Freda M. LaBrie, 93, formerly of Sun City, Ariz., died at 6:52 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, in the Ruffing Family Care Center of Bloomville, where she resided.

She was born in Menomonie, Wis., March 14, 1906, to Emrick C. and Eilse (Swanbeck) Nelson. On Nov. 26, 1931, in Detroit, Mich., she married Laurents J. LaBrie. He died May 13, 1993.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda D. Kramer of Tiffin; four grandchildren, James Kramer of Efland, N.C., Wendy Dreher of Redmond, Wash., Ellen Bell and Carolyn Persinger, both of Tiffin; and three great-grandchildren.

Two brothers, Harold and Elmer Nelson; and a sister, Hilda Ferber, are deceased.

A 1926 graduate of Stout Institute in Wisconsin, Mrs. LaBrie had been employed as a home economics teacher in Detroit, Mich., for 16 years.

There will be no services or visitation. Interment will be in Sunland cemetery, Sun City. The Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Support Group or Tiffin Alliance Church Music Fund.

Elizabeth A. Stratton
Previous Stratton Tavern owner

Elizabeth A. Stratton, 92, formerly of Hillcrest Drive, died at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, in the Northwestern Nursing Home, Berea.

She was born in Cleveland, Sept. 19, 1907, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Sauter) Doeberling. Her husband, Forrest L. Stratton, whom she married July 27, 1933, in Cleveland, died Feb. 15, 1970.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary Kus of Cleveland and Alice Kammer of Brookpark; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

A sister, Helen; and three brothers, Joe, Tony and Frank Doeberling, also are deceased.

Mrs. Stratton, a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and its Rosary Altar Society, was the co-owner, with her husband, of Stratton's Tavern in the 1950s and '60s.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Frank A. Murd as celebrant. The rosary will be recited at the church at 10:45 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home.

Helen M. Wolf
Rural Fostoria farm wife

Helen M. Wolf, 79, of W. TR 34, Fostoria, died in St. Vincent-Mercy Medical Center, Toledo, at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999.

She was born in Seneca County, May 19, 1920, to John and Flo (Hastings) Shaferly. Her husband, Kenneth Wolf, whom she married Aug. 17, 1941, in Bascom, survives in Fostoria.

Survivors also include: two sons, Charles Wolf of Tiffin and Gary Wolf of Milan; two daughters, Mrs. Clifford (Jean) Johnson of Millersville and Eileen Wolf of Findlay; a brother, Harlan Shaferly of Alvada; and five grandchildren.

A brother, Wayne Shaferly, is deceased.

Mrs. Wolf, a farm wife, was a 1938 graduate of New Riegel High School.

Services in the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria, will be at 1 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. Gary Staats officiating. Burial will be in Liberty cemetery, near Kansas, Ohio.

Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James E. 'Jim' Gilliland
Brother of Fostoria resident

James E. "Jim:" Gilliland, 70, of Birney, Mont., died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, in Billings, Mont.

He was born in Fostoria, July 12, 1929, to the late Lauren and Milldred (Halter) Gilliland of Tiffin. His wife, Sally M. (Woodard) Gilliland, whom he married June 24, 1950, at the Three Circle Ranch, survives.

Other survivors include: a son, James J. Gilliland; a daughter, Mrs. Allen (Sue M.) Anderson; five grandchildren; and three sisters, Jean Mickens, Joyce Mosier and Nancy Shaw, all of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Kay Stricker.

Mr. Gilliland, a graduate of Calvert High School, moved to Las Vegas, Nev., and worked for the Tulli Springs Ranch. He later located in Birney, where he worked for Henry and Dorothy Woodard.

Family graveside services will be in the Elks cemetery. A celebration of Mr. Gilliland's life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Sheridan Elks Club.

Memorials may be made to The Northern Rockie Mountain Cancer Center P.E.A.K.S. or Sheridan Elks cemetery Fund, in care of Delphine Toner at the First Interstate Bank, Sheridan, Wyo.

The Affordable Alternative Cremation and Burial Service, Billings, Mont., is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Eileen Callaghan
Sister of St. Francis

Sister Eileen Callaghan, 78, of the Sisters of St. Francis, 200 St. Francis Ave., died at 7:47 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, in St. Francis Convent.

She was born Oct. 3, 1921, in Toledo, to John and Gretta (O'Hara) Callaghan.

Surviving are: three sisters, Mary Jo Brenneman and Mildred Granata, both of Toledo and Joan Walrod of LaJolla, Calif.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and James Callaghan.

On March 31, 1940, she was accepted into the Sisters of St. Francis; on Aug. 12, 1942, she made her first profession and on Aug. 12, 1945, her final profession.

She was a student at Joliet College of St. Francis and served as a teacher in New Washington, Blakeslee, Custar and Landeck.

In 1955, she was assigned assistant mistress aspirants and teacher in Tiffin; in 1956, second semester, she was appointed teacher-superior in New Washington; in 1957, she served as a teacher-superior-principal in North Auburn.

Sister Eileen also was a teacher in Bucyrus at the Motherhouse, in Reed, Edgerton, at the Motherhouse at St. Francis Convent School and assistant aspirant mistress; from 1969-72 she was a counselor at Calvert High School.

In 1975 she entered Lima School of Practical Nursing and 1976-81 she served as an LPN at Mercy Hospital, Tiffin. and as assistant administrator for spiritual life and health. In 1982 she was appointed assistant to the community secretary and LPN at Mercy Hospital, Tiffin. She also was assistant to the community secretary and assisted with insurance claims; and as assistant to the community treasurer.

In 1990 she was appointed special praying member until 1998 and as a special praying member and receptionist in 1999.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. David Bruning and Bishop Robert Donnelly as concelebrants. Burial will be in St. Francis Convent cemetery.

Visitation in St. Francis Convent Parlor, is 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. today, where a wake service will be at 7 p.m.

The Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

C.R. 'Dick' Rousher
Retired Excello Corporation employee

C.R. "Dick" Rousher, 76, of 615 E. Jackson St., Fostoria, died at 12:57 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at Fostoria Community Hospital. He was born Jan. 29, 1923, to Clarence D. and Hattie (Finkenbinder) Rousher, both deceased. In February 1950 he married Estella Collis in Findlay; she died Dec. 22, 1993.

Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Jane Boerger of Tallahassee, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

Preceded in death were: two brothers, George and Glen Rousher; and a sister, Thelma Rousher.

Mr. Rousher was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he worked for Excello Corporation in Fostoria as a set-up man, retiring in 1985 after 35 years of employment. He was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church and Council 1197, K of C, Fostoria.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria. Burial will be at St. Wendelin Parish cemetery.

Visitation hours are from noon to 2 p.m. (prior to service) at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to St. Wendelin Catholic Church.

Dennis J. Fetzer
Lifelong Tiffin resident

Dennis J. Fetzer, 50, of 911 First Ave., Tiffin, died at 9:58 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, in an accident at 325 N. Michigan St., Toledo. He was born Oct. 9, 1949, to the late Charles H. Fetzer and Marjorie (Beeler) Fetzer, who survives in Tiffin.

Surviving include: his divorced wife, Becky Beard; a daughter, Mrs. Amy Gamez of Miami, Fla.; two brothers, Ronald C. Fetzer of Yellow Springs, and Larry J. Fetzer of Tiffin; three sisters, Mrs. Linda L. Kinney of Houston, Texas, Mrs. Betsy Chrisholm of Rochester Hills, Mich., and Mrs. Carol Sowards of Tiffin; and two grandchildren.

Mr. Fetzer was a Class of 1967 graduate of Columbian High School. He worked as a journeyman for Mosser Construction Company, member of the Catholic faith; AMVETS; Moose; Elks; Eagles; DAV; Sons of the Legion, Sycamore; and Journeymen Carpenter's Union.

The Rev. Frank A. Murd will officiate the 10 a.m. Saturday funeral service at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Boniface cemetery. Christian Wake Service will be at 8:45 p.m. tonight, at the Turner-Engle Funeral Home.

Visitation hours are from 2-9 p.m., tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Billie L. Fox
Retired Fostoria Community Hospital employee

Billie L. Fox, 93, of Independence House, Fostoria, died at 4:43 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999. She was born Jan. 24, 1906, to Augustus and Della (Bridges) Miller. On July 31, 1945, she married Howard K. Fox; he passed away.

Survivors include: three sons, John Fox of Fostoria, Bob Hansberry of Brighton, Ill., and Curt Hansberry of Victoria, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.

Preceded in death were: a son, Bill Hansberry; two brothers, Herbert and John Miller; a sister, Irene Smith; and a great grandchild.

Mrs. Fox was a 1924 graduate of Hume Fogg High School in Nashville, Tenn. She attended the Bellevue Hospital School of Nursing and retired in 1976 as an L.P.N. at Fostoria Community Hospital. She attended the Wesley United Methodist Church in Fostoria and member of Wesley United Methodist Woman, L.P.N. Association; and Fostoria Chapter 94 Order of the Eastern Star.

The Rev. Branson Hawkes will officiate the 11 a.m. Saturday graveside services at Fountain cemetery, Fostoria.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Services are being handled by the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home of Fostoria.

Donald Erswell
Attica resident's father

Donald Erswell, 76, of New London, died late Thursday night, October 14, 1999, at Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk, after a short illness.

Mr. Erswell was born July 22, 1923, in New London and was the son of Thomas C. and Bernice (Peck) Erswell.

He is survived by a daughter, Cathy Stockmeister of Attica; a son, Earl Erswell of New London; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his companion, Margaret Paramore of New London; and a sister, Rena White of Warren.

Preceding him death were his wife, Betty, in 1991; a grandson; and an infant brother.

He was a lifelong New London resident; had farmed most of his life; an employee of the former Ohio Body of New London and of the New London Schools; a former 4-H advisor for the New London Roughriders; Huron County Fair Board Director; a member of the Agricultural Heritage of Huron County; belonged to the Ohio Wagon Train and the Northern Ohio Draft Pony Association; participated with his draft pony team and wagons in parades and other events; a charter member of the New London Ruritan; and enjoyed woodworking and making crafts.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, at the Eastman Funeral Home, 200 W. Main St., New London, with burial in the Grove Street cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the Agricultural Heritage of Huron County, c/o Ralph Albright, 143 Sycamore Dr., Norwalk, OH 44857.

Irene D. Studrawa
Homemaker

Irene D. Studrawa, 67, of the Autumnwood Care Center, died at 6:05 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at the Autumnwood Care Center.

She was born in Brookville, Ind., on Nov. 15, 1931, to Leander and Bertha (Lithman) Schwegman, who are both deceased.

Survivors include: two sons, Geoff of Tiffin and Gregory of Jonesboro, Ark.; one daughter, Marcia Studrawa of Tiffin; two brothers, Harry Schwegman of Tempe, Ariz., and Alfred Schwegman of Oxford; and three grandchildren.

She graduated from McGuffey High School in Oxford and received her B.S. degree in business from Miami University in 1955. She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Wendelin's Catholic Church.

The Rev. William Rose will conduct the funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home with interment in the St. Marys cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or a charity of the donor's choice.

Donald Hoke Hemminger
Clyde resident

Donald Hoke Hemminger, 77, of Elmdale Avenue, Clyde, died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, in the Firelands Community Hospital at Sandusky.

Mr. Hemminger was born April 17, 1922, in Old Fort to Orley C. and Maudie K. (Hoke) Hemminger.

In November 1942, he married Mary Ohl, who died March 1968; he married Clara (Bouyack) Pettys, who survives.

Also surving are: two daughters, Mrs. Terry (Shirley) Reed of Naples, Fla., Ms. Sharon Woessner of Fremont; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Charles (Jane) Hilton of Glendale, Ariz., Mrs. Jorge (Beverly) Mendoza of Clyde; three brothers, Daryl of Avon, George of Republic, and Larry of Shelby; seven sisters, Mrs. Xenith Allgyre of Tiffin, Mrs. Lelah Daniel of Bloomville, Mrs. Dana Fretz of Bloomville, Mrs. Oral Kirby of Tiffin, Mary Lou Neikirk of Republic, Bonny Rhoad of Kodak, Tenn., and Betty Paul of Tiffin; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Ronald Pettys.

He graduated from Bloomville high school in 1941; was a veteran who served in the Navy during World War II; was a maintenance supervisor at the Whirlpool Corp. for 30 years; a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clyde; Clyde Heritage League; life member of Clyde VFW; American Legion; Whirlpool Management Club; formerly a member of the Green Springs Lions Club, Green Springs City Council, Clyde Landscape Committee for 25 years, and Clyde Exchange Club where he received the Book of Golden Deeds.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clyde with the Rev. Gerhardt Gosnell officiating and assisted by the Rev. Steve Wood. Burial will follow in the Oakwood cemetery at Fremont with military graveside provided by the Clyde American Legion and Clyde VFW.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home in Clyde.

Dale D. McCullough
Fostoria resident

Dale D. McCullough, 66, of 1160 N. TR 21, Fostoria, died at 2:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at the Medical College of Ohio.

Mr. McCullough was born on April 2, 1933, to Melvin A. and Mary June (Keith) McCullough. He married Beverly Williams and they were divorced. He later married Donna (Powell) Opperman in Richmond, Ky., and she survives in Fostoria.

Also surviving are two sons, Don McCullough of Bascom, Shawn McCullough of Wayne; two stepsons, Jess Opperman of Fairborn, and Jamie Opperman of Gettysburg, Penn.; one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Susan) Flechtner of Fostoria; two stepdaughters, Jeanne Sallisbury and Josie Johnson, both of Fostoria; five sisters, Frances Gottfried and Cleo Bish of Fostoria, Lucy McDonald and Molly Robinson of Findlay, Edna Pessell of Arcadia; and 16 grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Paul and Dean McCullough; three sisters, Dolores Hawk, Jean Snyder and Dolly Mitchum.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict; a handler for nine years at the Abbott Co. at North Baltimore, retiring in 1992; and a member of the Fostoria United Sportsmen.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Mann-Hare Funeral Home in Fostoria with the Rev. Paul Myers officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the United Veterans of Fostoria at Memory Gardens near Arcadia.

Visiting hours will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
