John Shaffer
Retired construction worker
John Shaffer, 86, formerly of 906 Seneca St., Fostoria, died at 8:20 p.m. Friday, July 30, 1999, in the Good Shepherd Home, Fostoria.
He was born March 2, 1913, in Hollister, to Michael and Gizelda (Barkey) Shaffer.
Surviving are nieces and nephews.
Also preceding him in death were four brothers, Joseph, Alec, Frank and Andrew Shaffer; and two sisters, Elizabeth and Matilda Shaffer.
A World War II U.S. Army veteran, he retired as a construction worker. He was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria.
Services in the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria, where military graveside services will be conducted by the United Veterans of Fostoria..
Visitation at the funeral home will be 6-9 p.m. Monday, where a Christian Wake service will be at 8:30 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the church or St. Wendelin Schools Educational Foundation.
Eugene K. Benner
Former market owner/operator
Eugene K. Benner, 92, died at 11:30 p.m. Friday, July 30, 1999, at his residence at 315 E. Seventh St., Sycamore.
He was born in Bucks County, Quakertown, Pa., April 14, 1907, to Samuel H. and Emily (Gerbron) Benner. He was raised by his step-mother, Mrs. Louisa (Bechtold) Benner, who is deceased.
On June 28, 1933, he married
Althea K. Raidline, who survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Lester E. Benner of Sycamore; three grandsons, Tyron, Matthew and Seth Benner; and four great-grandchildren.
Three brothers, two sisters, three step-brothers, three half-brothers and a half-sister, also are deceased.
Mr. Benner, the former owner of Bener's Market in Sycamore 1953-75, also worked at Chrysler Corp. for six years and the A & P Tea Company for 15 years, both of Detroit, Mich.
A former member of the Zion Hill Lutheran Church, Zion Hill, Pa., he was a member of the Mohawk Historical Society and made an honorary firemen by the Sycamore Volunteer Fire Department.
An avid baseball fan he sponsored a local baseball team and donated the first electric scoreboard at the Sycamore Legion Field.
His hobbies was building doghouse, of which he had built more than 700.
The Rev. Van Fisher will be the officiant at the 1 p.m. Tuesday service in the Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore. Interment will be in Pleasant View cemetery, Sycamore.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wyandot County, the Wyandot County Home Health, Sycamore United Church of Christ, Mohawk Sixty Plus Club or the donor's choice.
Sidney Jack Levans
Lake Park Industries employee
Sidney Jack Levans, 57, of 24 Railroad St., Bloomville, died Friday afternoon, July 30, 1999, in Marion General Hospital, following a six month illness.
He was born July 21, 1942, in Attica, the son of the late Chester and Lucille (Wilson) Levans. His wife, Mary E. (Howard) Levans, whom he married
Sept. 25, 1964, in Attica, survives.
Survivors also include: a son, Jason Levans of Tiffin; a daughter, Melissa Levans of Bloomville; and four brothers, Robert Levans of Bloomville, Norbert Levans of Fremont, Gerald Levans of Burlington, Wis. and George Levans of Auburn, Wash.
He also was preceded in death by a brother, Edward.
Mr. Levans, a Seneca County resident most of his life, was employed at Lake Park Industries of Ohio, Greenwich.
He was a member of Shelby Church of God and Cranberry Golf Course.
Services in the Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home, 3085 S. SR 19, Bloomville, will be at 1 p.m. Monday, with Pastor Danny Slone officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery, Bloomville.
Visitation at the funeral home is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
George William Tarris
Union Carbide Corp. retiree
Former Fostoria resident George William Tarris, 84, of 2000 Silverstone Drive, Findlay, died at 6:17 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, in Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center, Findlay.
He was born in Fostoria, March 2, 1915, to William Orlo and Nora A. (Brown) Tarris. On Nov. 17, 1940, he married
Dorothy F. Purkey, who died May 9, 1979. He married
Elizabeth A. "Betty" Goshe on Jan. 9, 1982, in Wesley United Methodist Church, Fostoria. She survives in Findlay.
Other survivors include a brother, Paul A. Tarris of Adrian, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Herbert (Peggy) Mellott of Bloomdale, and nieces and nephews.
A sister, Ellen Brand and a brother, Scott Tarris, also are deceased.
Mr. Tarris, a U.S. Army veteran, retired in 1977 from the Engineering Department of Union Carbide Corp., Fostoria, where he had been employed for more than 43 years.
He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge 935 and Eagles Lodge 430, all of Fostoria; American Legion Post 003, where he was a life member and AMVETS Post 21, both of Findlay.
He also was a member of Masonic Lodge 288 Free and Accepted Masons, where he was a 50-year member, Garfield Chapter 150 Royal Arch Masons, Council 90 Royal and Select Masons, Commandry 62 Knights Templar, past patron Chapter 94 Order of Eastern Star, Shrine Club and the Vanguards Shrine Unit, all of Fostoria; and Scottish Rite-Valley of Toledo and the Zenobia Shrine, Toledo.
The Rev. Calvin Wise will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Wednesday service in the Mann-Hare Funeral Home, Fostoria. Burial will be in Fountain cemetery, Fostoria, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the United Veterans of Fostoria.
Visitation will be 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where Masonic Memorial services will be at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Shrine Children's Hospital or a charity of the donor's choice.
Norma Jean Lowe
Rural Clyde homemaker
Norma Jean Lowe, 71, of CR 224, Clyde, died Saturday, July 31, 1999, in Memorial Hospital, Fremont.
She was born June 3, 1928, in Fremont, the only child of Cleve and Margaret (Smith) Hawk. Her husband, Earl E. Lowe, whom she married
Oct. 11, 1947, survives.
Survivors also include: two sons, Gary A. Lowe of Clyde and Greg D. Lowe of Green Springs; and four grandchildren.
Mrs. Lowe, a homemaker, graduated in 1946 from Fremont Ross High School.
A lifetime Fremont/Clyde area resident, she was an avid camper and enjoyed go-cart racing.
Services in the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Harvey Sprague officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Clyde.
Visitation at the funeral home will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials may be made to the Green Springs Volunteer Fire Department.
Josephine M. Swaim
Seamstress/homemaker
Josephine M. Swaim, 92, formerly of 1221 California Road, Salem Manor 209, Fort Wayne, Ind., died at 9:20 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 1999, in St. Francis Nursing Home, where she had resided since July 20.
She was born in Huntington County, Ind., May 5, 1907, to Elisha and Bertha Lou (Ruble) Roberts. Her first husband, Leo F. Harrold, is deceased. In March 1951, in Fort Wayne, she married
Benjamin E. Swaim, who died in 1976.
Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. George (Lois) Payne of Tiffin; a son, James L. Harrold of Gentry, Ark.; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; a step-great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Beatrice Schemehorn of Fort Wayne.
A brother, Arthur Roberts, is deceased.
Mrs. Swaim, a homemaker and seamstress, was a member of Parkwood Church of God, Ft. Wayne and its Women's Society.
The Rev. Benjamin Keckler will conduct the 2 p.m. Wednesday service in Parkwood Church of God. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery, Warren, Ind.
Friends may call at Parkwood Church of God one hour before the service on Wednesday.
The Turner-Engle Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Hilda A. Barnes
Former Tiffin resident
Word has been received of the death of Hilda A. Barnes, 88, who died Saturday, July 31, 1999, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg.
She was born in Moundsville, W.Va., Nov. 22, 1910, to Victor and Clara Walk. Her husband, Robert E. Barnes, whom she met at the Ritz Theatre, where she was an usherette, died in 1937.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Jack (Nancy) Harbaugh of Hudson, Mich., six grandchildren, a step-granddaughter and seven great-grandchildren.
A son-in-law; a grandson, David V. Kowalski; and her special friend, Vin Dolch, also are deceased.
Mrs. Barnes spent her childhood and school years in Tiffin and graduated from Columbian High School in 1929.
After moving to Toledo, she worked at Sears Roebuck & Co. in downtown Toledo as a payroll supervisor and then at Sears at Westgate, retiring in 1974.
In 1987, she returned to Tiffin and lived here for for 10 years, before living with her daughter. For the past year and a half she lived at Oakleaf Retirement Village and later was a resident of Harborside of Point Place until July 19, when she was admitted to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
Services are at 8 p.m. today in the David R. Jasin Funeral Home, 5300 Summit St., Toledo, where friends and family will be received 3-8 p.m. today. Interment will be in Greenlawn cemetery, Tiffin.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the American Cancer Society.
Michael Wayne Lanning
Graphic arts salesman
Michael Wayne Lanning, 56, formerly of Findlay, died Thursday, July 29, 1999, in Minneapolis, Minn., where he resided.
He was born in Findlay, March 19, 1943, to Wayne W. and Mary Ellen (Montague) Lanning. They survive in Sarasota, Fla.
Other survivors include: his longtime companion, Mary Kiley of Minneapolis; and a brother, Stephen R. Lanning of Sarasota.
A brother, Perry E. Lanning, is deceased.
Mr. Lanning, a graduate of Findlay High School and later Capital University, Columbus, worked as a salesman in the graphic arts industry for Eastman Kodak. He also worked at numerous other photo equipment companies
Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Gearty-Delmore Chapel, Minneapolis.
Local services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Stombaugh Memorial Funeral Home, Carey, with the Rev. W. DeMoss officiating. Interment will be in Spring Grove cemetery, Carey.
Local visitation will be 10:30-11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
John Glenn Stapleton
Erie Blacktop union laborer
John Glenn Stapleton, 38, of 10682 CH 106, Upper Sandusky, died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 1999, in a one-car auto accident on SR 547, west of Monroeville.
He was born Feb. 27, 1961, in Bellefontaine, the son of Eugene and Mary (Prichard) Stapleton. His father survives in Mt. Blanchard. His former wife, Jeannie Stapleton, also survives.
Other survivors include: four daughters, Tiffany and Jennifer Johnson, both of Nevada, Ohio, Mary Stapleton, of Carey and Amber Romick of Findlay; a son, Wyatt Stapleton of Carey; two brothers, Ronald Stapleton of Mt. Blanchard and Everett Stapleton of Forest; and a sister, Mrs. Bernard (Donna) Vent of Upper Sandusky.
His mother is deceased.
Mr. Stapleton, a social member of the American Legion and VFW, both of Carey, was employed as a union laborer/operator for the Erie Blacktop Inc. of Sandusky.
He also was a member of Carey Conservation Club and Carey Eagles Lodge.
The Rev. Paul Goetz will be the officiant at the 10 a.m. Wednesday service in the Stombaugh Memorial Funeral Home, Carey. Burial will be in Spring Grove cemetery, Carey.
Visitation at the funeral home will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Carl E. Holman
Atlas Crankshaft retiree
Carl E. Holman, 71, of 6817 N. CR 25, Fostoria, died Sunday evening, Aug. 1, 1999, in Fostoria Community Hospital.
He was born June 15, 1928, in Perry County, Ind., to Anthony E. and Anna S. (Hubert) Holman. On Oct. 11, 1958, in St. Patrick Catholic Church, Bascom, he married
Cordelia T. Sheeter, who survives in Fostoria.
Other survivors include: three sons, Michael C. and Edward J. Holman, both of Fostoria, and David A. Holman of Rising Sun; five grandchildren; three brothers, Allen and Tony Holman, both of Fostoria, and Omer Holman of Oregon, Ohio; and four sisters, Katie Mosier, Cecilia Droll and Bernadine Droll, all of Fostoria, and Mary Kinn of Bluffton.
Three brothers, Herman, Porter and Leonard Holman, are deceased.
Mr. Holman, a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean Conflict, retired in 1988 from the Atlas Crankshaft, Fostoria, after 25 years of employment.
He was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria and the Fostoria United Sportsman Club.
A funeral Mass in St. Wendelin Catholic Church will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, where the rosary will be recited at 10 a.m.. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation at the Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria, is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today, where a Christian Wake service will be at 8:30 p.m.
