Vernie M. Russell, 83, of 2486 CR 185, Clyde, died at 10:21 p.m. Friday, June 4, 1999, in the Bellevue Hospital, where she had been a patient since May 18.
She was born Oct. 5, 1915, in Warren County, McMinnville, Tenn., to George W. and Phronia (Campbell) Smith. Her husband, Carroll W. Russell, whom she married
Oct. 25, 1933, in Decatur, Ind., preceded her in death May 31, 1993.
Surviving are: a son, Ronald D. Russell of Tyler, Texas; two daughters, Carolyn D. Brown of Clyde and Mrs. David (Sandra) Burmeister of Fremont; three half-brothers, Donald Ross of Elizabethton, Tenn., Jack Ross of Marblehead and James Ross of Sandusky; two half-sisters, Joann Gruver of Fremont and Joyce Eversole of Sandusky; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and caregivers, Oatha "Spike" and Judy Hughes.
A 1933 graduate of Fremont Ross High School, Mrs. Russell was a homemaker. For many years she also sold produce grown on her farm.
She was a former member of the Green Springs Garden Club.
The Rev. Joel Remmers will be the officiant at the 1:30 p.m. Tuesday service in the Engle-Young Funeral Home of Green Springs. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Clyde.
Visitation at the funeral home will be at 5-8 p.m. Monday and one hour before the service on Tuesday.
Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or the Bellevue Hospital.

Thelma Puffenberger, 76, of 60 Crestview Drive, died at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 1999, at her residence. Arrangements are pending at the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home.

Thelma Puffenberger, 76, died at 8 p.m. Saturday June 5, 1999, at her residence at 60 Crestview Drive.
She was born in Twin City, Ga., April 1, 1923, to Dewey and Hattie (Lamb) Edenfield. On Oct. 20, 1942, in Savannah, Ga., she married
Paul V. Puffenberger, who died Aug. 17, 1996.
Survivors include: three sons, Paul V. Puffenberger of Springboro, Thomas E. Puffenberger of Tiffin and Jeffery L. Puffenberger of Worthington; ; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Cudzil of Schnecksville, Pa.; a brother, Vernon Edenfield of Waco, Texas; two sisters, Fannie Mae Davis of Savannah and Lucille Miller of San Angelo, Texas; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Peggy Ann Puffenberger and two brothers, Robert J. and Otto Edenfield, also are deceased.
Mrs. Puffenberger, a homemaker, was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She graduated from high school in Twin City.
The Rev. Frank Murd and the Rev. Richard Dunn, will be the co-celebramts at the 11 a.m. Wednesday funeral Mass in St. Mary Catholic Church. The rosary will be recited 15 minutes prior to the mass on Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery.
Visitation at the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, where a wake service will be at 3:45 p.m.
Memorials may be made to St. Francis Chapel Fund, St. Mary Catholic Church and the American Cancer Society.
Nannie G. Conner

Nannie G. Conner, 82, of 530 S. Warpole St., Upper Sandusky, the home of her niece, Mrs. L.B. (Ileene) Adkins, where she had resided for the past 20 years, died at 8:20 p.m. Saturday June 5, 1999, in the Wyandot Manor Nursing Home, Upper Sandusky.
She was born in Trout, W.Va., July 30, 1916, to Garfield and Hattie (Ayers) Clemons. Her husband, Other Conner, is deceased.
Survivors include: a daughter, Judy Holder of Temple, Texas; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Everett Clemons of Lake Milton, Ohio, Kenneth "Pete" Clemons of Alderson, W.Va. and North R. Clemons of Excello, Mo.; and two sisters, Luella Frint of Charmo, W.Va. and Mary Bobbit of Alderson.
A son, George E. Conner; a sister, Lucy Casto and a brother, Warren Clemons, also are deceased.
Mrs. Conner, a registered nurse, also owned and operated a greenhouse in Charleston, W.Va.
A member of the Methodist Faith, she enjoyed watching television.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Oak Hill cemetery, Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. Cathy Wirth officiating.
Visitation at the Bringman-Clark and Company Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky is 6-8 p.m. today.

John C. Berry
Self-employed contractor
John C. Berry, 45, of 149 E. TR 42, died at his home Thursday June 3, 1999.
He was born in Mansfield, Nov. 6, 1953, the son of Kenneth Delmer and Donna J. (Boyer) Berry. On Sept. 17, 1993, in Bettsville, he married
Sheila Goshe, who survives.
Mr. Berry, a high school graduate, was a self-employed contractor with All-PHASE Builders. He had attended college.
A U.S. Air Force veteran, having served 1972-73, he was a member of Moose Lodge 846, where he served as billiards chairman and the C and J Valley Pool League.
Memorial services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Culp officiating.
Visitation at the funeral home will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Richard G. Sacksteder, 79, of 182 St. Francis Ave., formerly of 350 Melmore St., died in St. Francis Home at 7:50 p.m. Saturday June 5, 1999.
He was born in Tiffin, April 23, 1920, to Andrew and Catherine (Carrigan) Sacksteder. He had never married
.
Surviving are two brothers, Thomas Sacksteder of Fostoria and Robert Sacksteder of Tiffin; and two sisters, Kathryn Sacksteder and Mirian Fanshaw, both of Tiffin.
A brother, James Sacksteder, preceded him in death.
Mr. Sacksteder, a graduate of Calvert High School, retired as the owner of Sacksteder Insurance Co.
A volunteer for many years for many organizations, he was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Elks 94, the Knights of Columbus and the Thomas Connor's Commission.
The Rev. James K. Say will be the officiant at the 12:30 p.m. Tuesday funeral Mass in St. Joseph Catholic Church, where the rosary will be prayed at 12:15 p.m. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today.

Edith M. Shade
Former Bloomville resident
Edith M. Shade, 99, formerly of 7768 Ross Road, Bloomville, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday June 6, 1999, in the Fairview Manor. She had been in failing health the past year.
She was born in Wyandot County, March 26, 1900, to John and Maggie (Cristwell) Beam. On Sept. 4, 1921, she married
Russell C. Shade, who died Nov. 15, 1991.
Survivors include: a son, Elven Shade of Bucyrus; a daughter, Mrs. Doris M. Frankenfield of Lykens; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Also deceased are a son, Robert D. Shade; two sisters, Bernice Shellhorn and Evelyn Beam; and a brother Wayne Beam.
Mrs. Shade, a lifelong resident of the Bloomville area, was a farmwife and homemaker.
A 1919 graduate of the second class from Lykens High School, she was a member of Lykens United Methodist Church, 50 year member of the Bloomville Grange, where she had held various offices and a charter member of the Lykens Community Club.
She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, gardening and playing the piano.
The Rev. Gary Hicks will be the officiant at the 11 a.m. Wednesday service in the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home, Bucyrus. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery, Bloomville.
Visitation at the funeral home is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today.

Melvin S. Scalf
Father of Tiffin residents
Melvin S. Scalf, 66, died Saturday June 5, 1999, at his residence in Delphos.
He was born Oct. 9, 1932, in Richmond, Va., to the late George and Fannie Scalf.
Survivors include: five sons, Kevin Scalf of Delphos, Scott Scalf of Lima, Mark Scalf of Bowling Green, Craig and Tim Scalf, both of Tiffin; a daughter, Denise Scalf of Delphos; two brothers, S.M. and Jim Scalf, both of Virginia; a sister, Yutella Shoup; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A son, Michael Scalf; and a brother, Monk Scalf, are both deceased.
Mr. Scalf, a member of the VFW retired from Toledo Molding and Die. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Memorial visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Saturday in the Harter and Son Funeral Home, 209 W. Third St. Delphos.

Vernon G. Baker
Carpenter/construction worker
Vernon G. Baker, 76, 51 McCollum St., died at 5:16 p.m. Saturday June 5, 1999, in the Medical College of Ohio Hospital, Toledo, where he had been a patient for nine days.
He was born Feb. 5, 1923, in Tiffin, to Chalice H. and Ida K. (Fox) Baker.
Surviving are his special friend, Betty "Babe" Biller; seven children, Steven Baker of Danville, Rodney Baker of New Carlisle, Tony Baker of Fredericktown, Chris Baker of Norwalk, Kevin Baker, also of Fredericktown, Mrs. Pam Parks of Fostoria and Melinda Baker of Bellevue; a special granddaughter; a sister, Mildred L. Eidt of Tiffin; and a half-sister, Helen Cleveland of Tiffin.
A sister, Evelyn Grace Baker, preceded him in death.
Mr. Baker, a carpenter, worked for the Modern Construction Co. for many years. He also worked nine years at Cedar Point on construction projects.
A resident of the Tiffin area since 1987, he was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the National Rifleman's Association and Carpenter's Union Local 49 of Bellevue.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Turner-Engle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard C. Dunn officiating. Burial will be in Fairmont cemetery.
Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association or the Kidney Foundation.
Helen Marie Reuter

Helen Marie Reuter, 91, formerly of the Kiwanis Manor, died at 8:50 p.m. Saturday June 5, 1999, in St. Francis Home.
She was born in Tiffin, Aug. 13, 1907, to Edward and Bessie (Haines) Schmidutz. Her husband, Gilbert G. Reuter, whom she married
in 1925, in Tiffin, preceded her in death in 1997.
Survivors include: a son, John Edward Reuter of Tiffin; a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Ruth) Eldridge of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Lucille) Ink and Mary Perkins, both of Tiffin; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
A sister, Frances Schmidutz; and three brothers, James, Edward and Raymond Schmidutz, also are deceased.
Mrs. Reuter, a 1925 graduate of Columbian High School, owned a grocery store in Kansas, Ohio, and had been employed as a glass cutter at the former Tiffin Glass House.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where she was very active, and the Kitchen Band at Kiwanis Manor.
A funeral Mass in St. Mary's Catholic Church will be at 10 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Frank A. Murd as celebrant. The rosary will be recited at 9:45 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery.
Visitation at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday, where a wake service will be at 8:30 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the church, the American Cancer Society or Community Hospice Care.
