SMILACK Edith Smilack, Community Leader and Artist, 1915 - August 19, 2002, (born in Romania), a resident of Worthington, Oh., for 42 years, leaves behind a powerful legacy that reflects her remarkable beauty, vision and strength against all odds. Her work and dreams continue to grow in her children, grandchildren and communities. She is preceded in death by her husband Oscar Smilack and her siblings Blanche, Bessie, George, Bernard and Jackie. She leaves behind her loving son, Michael and his family: wife, Virginia, daughter, Eveline, and sons, Daniel and Zachary and his wife, Laurie; and loving son, Stephen and his family: wife, Phyllis Schechter (daughter of Jack and Sonia Schechter of Columbus), daughter, Tia and sons, Simeon, Jascha and his wife, Lindsey, and Solomon; and her sisters, Golda and Jeanette; and sister-in-law, Hadassa in Israel; and cousins, nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews. Edith's accomplishments are a testament to her passion for knowledge, her inexhaustible energy, and her drive to accomplish all she set her mind to. She achieved her goals in spite of restrictive social, political and gender biases. Dedicated to raising the bar, Edith had little time to listen to those who tried to hold her back. She naturally excelled at all her activities. She returned to college and, seventeen years after high school, earned a BA from The Ohio State University ('56), a BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design ('60), and an MFA from the prestigious Cranbrook Academy for the Arts ('61). Edith went on to teach classes at the local Unitarian church, the YWCA, and Columbus College of Art and Design. She was Chairperson of the Sculpture Department at Columbus College of Art and Design from 1961 to 1973. Edith was owner and president of RIMCO in Columbus and received the 1974 Ohio Businesswoman of The Year award from the National Library of Congress. The National Museum of Women in the Arts honored Edith with a Certificate of Appreciation. She was also selected to the Who's Who of Ohio and the Who's Who in American Jewry in 1981. She was a co-founder of Beth Tikvah Temple in Worthington, and a member of the Unitarian Church and Alumni organizations for OSU, Cranbrook Academy, and Columbus College of Art and Design. In 1970, she was a board member and Secretary of Gladden Community Center. Her works with her husband Oscar in the civil rights movement helped change the local community forever. Together they strove to ensure all peoples freedom and basic human rights. Even in the face of popular disapproval, their dedication did not waiver. Even despite the communities' fear of change, they remained steadfast in their pursuit of justice and liberty for all. Her artwork often has been compared to the Mexican political painter Orosco and has been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally. The "Selma Series" chronicles the civil rights struggles in the South in the 60's. Her civil rights cards were sold commercially and helped raise money for the civil rights movement. Her paintings are owned by private families throughout the world and by corporations in Columbus, Detroit, and South Africa. Edith received a Citation for participation in the Civil Rights movement from the UN local chapter in 1965. Under the auspices of the United Nations and a Swedish grant, Edith designed and decorated the royal palace of King Moschwaischwai in Masera, Lesotho, South Africa (1975-76). Edith personally created 7 paintings for their local residences, and a 6.5' by 9' Roman Catholic Tapestry for the Royal Chapel. She was also elected to the board of the National Lesotho Stamp Committee. Her book, "KILLING ME SOFTLY", chronicles her seven-year struggle with Endometrial cancer (yet unpublished). Edith refused orthodox medicine and chose to pursue alternative options and methods. Her book describes her pursuit of a cure that sought to heal her body without the use of radiation and toxic chemicals. Her family provided home care with additional care provided by the Hospice at Riverside and Grant. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Edith Smilack Memorial Scholarship Fund through any Huntington National Bank branch, this fund will provide a scholarship each at the Columbus College of Art and Design, the Cranbrook Academy for the Arts, and the Yiddish studies program at OSU.
