MILLER A funeral service for Arthur H. Miller, age 72, of Hebron, Oh., will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2002 at the Kirkersville Chapel of HENDERSON, Van ATTA & JOHNSTON FUNERAL SERVICE with Rev. William Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in Kirkersville cemetery where military honors will be observed. Mr. Miller, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II, died August 14, 2002 at his residence. He was born March 4, 1930 in Columbus, Oh. to the late John W. and Bessie (Lamp) Miller. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, a former member of the Franklin County Sheriff Department Diving Team, one of the first founders of the Ohio Waste Haulers Association and owner of the Bonded Septic Tank Service. Surviving are wife, Roberta Miller, Hebron; children, Arthur A. Miller, Columbus, Donna M. (John) Paulsen, Johnstown, David "Craig" Miller, Hebron, Boyd G. (Patricia) Miller and Freida (Kevin) Shoemaker, all of Pataskala; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles Miller and Robert Miller; sister, Bess Lang; many nieces, nephews and friends. MILLER Robert E. Miller, age 77, of Upper Arlington, passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at his residence. He was a WW II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. Robert graduated from Miami University and was an avid supporter of Upper Arlington music and sports programs: "Go Bears" He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Mavis Miller, brothers Walter, Richard, and David Miller, sister Violet Miller and mother-in-law Ella "Petey" F. Ernest. Robert is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alice L. Miller; son, Scott (Phyllis) Miller; daughter, Michele (Ben) Dutcher; brother, Ted (Kathryn) Miller; grandchildren, Jennifer (Reed) Gillette, Rob Dutcher, Christopher and Alysse Miller; and sister-in-law, Kathryn Miller. PRESTON William B. Preston, 72, of Thornville, passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at his residence. He was born on February 7, 1930 to the late Harold and Naomi (Taylor) Preston. He was a member of the U.S. Army and worked in real estate. RASOR Hazel Snyder Rasor, 62, of Delaware, passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at Grady Memorial Hospital. She was a member and Choir Director for the Stratford St. Paul United Methodist Church. She served on the Olentangy Local School Board and the Board of Zoning Appeals for Liberty Township. ROTHENBUHLER Walter C. Rothenbuhler, died August 14, 2002 after a long illness with Parkinson's Disease. Born May 4, 1920 in Monroe County, Oh. to Samuel and Ferne Rothenbuhler. He graduated from high school in Woodsfield, Oh. and began college at The Ohio State University. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Department from 1942-1946, married
Claribel Hall of Ashtabula County, Oh. in 1944 and finished his education at Iowa State University. Four children were born in Ames, Iowa, where the family lived until 1962. After earning BS, MS and Ph.D. at Iowa State he began his career there as an Assistant Professor in 1954, an expert in honey bee research. He was recruited by Ohio State and moved his research operations there in 1962, the family home was in Worthington. He was internationally known for honey bee genetics, including breeding for disease resistance and pioneering research on behavior genetics. He was also an award-winning teacher and was proud of the courses he designed and taught in animal behavior and honey bee biology. Professor Rothenbuhler retired from Ohio State in 1985 and the Rothenbuhler Honey Bee Research Laboratory there was named in his honor in 1989. He trained 44 graduate students and published about 75 papers, he was an AAAS Fellow, an active member of many professional societies, including American Men and Women of Science, and he served on the National Research Council Committee on the African Bee, 1971-72. Rothenbuhler was also active in the First Christian Church in Ames, Iowa and after 1962, in the Northwest Christian Church, Upper Arlington, Oh. He held positions of Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Superintendent and Education Committee member and Chair. He was an early advocate of adult church education, participating in group-process based classes in the 1950's and leading them in the 1960's. He is survived by Claire Rothenbuhler, his wife of 58 years; 4 children and their spouses, Leonard and Roberta Rothenbuhler of Indianapolis, Ind., Lorraine and Don Holycross of Blowing Rock, N.C., Eric Rothenbuhler and Jane Martin of Jersey City, N.J., Hilda and Allan Talib of Dayton; 6 grandchildren; 3 sisters; and many nephews and nieces. His parents, 2 brothers and an infant sister preceded him. SHIRK Frieda I. Stewart Shirk, age 84, of Marysville and a lifetime resident of Union County, died Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at The Gables at Green Pastures. She retired in 1983 as Dean of the College of Nursing at Capital University. She was a member of The Ohio State University Hospitals board from 1980 to 1985. Prior to her tenure at Capital, she was the associate director of the OSU School of Nursing and for 36 years, held positions in nursing education, administration and research. Though nursing schools in the 1940's and 1950's and prior years were located in and administrated by hospitals, she believed that preparation for nursing should be offered by colleges and universities. She felt students could enroll in courses along with students in other fields, and share in the same activities in social, academic and recreational clubs broadening their education. Throughout her career she served on various boards and committees of The Ohio State University and on state and national organizations to help achieve this. She was the recipient of many awards for her work. Of particular significance and joy to her were an award from students campus wide for her contributions to their interests and an award for outstanding teaching from the faculty of the University. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education with a major in nursing from The Ohio State University and a Master of Arts Degree and Doctorate in Education from Teachers College Columbia University in New York City. A 1936 graduate of New California High School, she served in the Army Nurses Corps in North Africa, Italy and France during WW II. She was a member of Shiloh Chapel Evangelical Friends Church and a former member of Jerome United Methodist Church. A teacher of youth, she served on various church boards and committees and was the former director of Christian Education at Marysville Friends Church. Following retirement, she and her husband spent winter months in Naples, Fla. She was born May 12, 1918 on a farm in Jerome Township to the late Clarence and Bessie R. (Vermillion) Stewart. She was predeceased by 2 brothers Woodrow and Carl "Burton" Stewart. She is survived by her husband, Floyd H. Shirk, whom she married
June 30, 1960 in Jerome; a daughter, Donna R. Kinder of Mechanicsville, Va.; and 2 sons, G. Houston (Linda) Shirk of Virginia Beach, Va. and Dennis D. (Cynthia) Shirk of Newark, OH.; 2 grandchildren, Douglas R. (Heather) Kinder of Mechanicsville, Va. and Darin R. WRIGHT Mr. Theodore Wright affectionately known as Ted went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 4, 2002. Ted was born May 3, 1940 in Columbia, S.C. to Mr. Theodore Wright Sr. and Mrs. Wreatha Washington Wright. Ted entered the U.S. Army on November 7, 1963 serving during the Vietnam Era, he was honorably discharged on November 1, 1965. He came to Columbus and united with the First A.M.E. Zion Church where he was a faithful member of the Music Department singing with the Sanctuary, Inspirational and Tempelairs Choirs. Ted was preceded in death by his parents and his Christian mother Mrs. Willa Mae Robinson.
