LONG Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Long, age 86, of Plain City, died Saturday, June 1, 2002 at Doctor's Hospital West. Born December 31, 1915 in Lilly Chapel. A retired farmer in Union County who was a hard worker, fantastic at raising children and very much enjoyed his time he had with his grandchildren. A charter member of the Heartland Union Freewill Baptist Church. Preceded in death by parents Elmer and Mattie Vandene (Finks) Long, 3 brothers and 4 sisters, son-in-law Richard "Dick" Wilcox. MERRICK Nora Ann Merrick, 81, formerly of North Shore Retirement Center, Lakeside, Oh., passed away at Providence Care Center, Sandusky on May 31. Prior to 1999, Nora was a lifelong resident of Columbus and Worthington and a member of Worthington Christian Church. She will be remembered for the faithful childcare she so lovingly provided to families in the Grandview and Upper Arlington areas. In addition, her love and devotion to her twenty nieces and nephews was unmatched. Nora was the second of ten children born to Raymond and Nora (Hurbaugh) Merrick. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sister Elizabeth L. Miller and brothers Donald and Charles Merrick and sister-in-law Doris Merrick, nephews Scott Merrick, David (Butch) Taggart and Bryce Ziegler. Surviving Nora are sisters, Margaret Merrick and Dorothy (Lee) Taggart of Columbus; brothers, Richard (Helen) Merrick of Encinita, Calif., William Merrick of Blountville, Ala., Raymond (Rilla) Merrick of Mt. Gilead, Oh., David (Nancy) Merrick of Lakeside/Marblehead, Oh.; and sister-in-law, Betty Merrick of Virginia Beach, Va. There will be no visitation and the family suggests memorial contributions to the charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. June 22, 2002 at Overbrook Presbyterian Church, 4131 North High St., Columbus. PAVEY Roy D. Pavey, 98, of 204 Village Court, Columbiana, Oh., passed away early Sunday morning, June 2, 2002 at the Salem Community Hospital. Mr. Pavey was born September 16, 1903 in Columbus, Oh., the son of the late Charles and Emma Pavey. Mr. Pavey was the long-time Manager of the Producers Livestock Association, a farmer owned livestock co-op. A lifelong horseman along with his late wife Helen, he owned and operated Donalene Farm in the Columbus area from 1935 until 1988. Together Pavey and his wife developed their farm into one of the preeminent producers of champion saddle-breds. His notoriety in the horse business led to his appointment in 1947 by Governor Frank Lausche to the Ohio State Board of Agriculture, where he served until 1960. He was also the founder and a long-time officer in a number of horse shows and organizations, including the River Horse Show, the Tri State Horse Show Association, the Buckeye State Futurity, the Ohio State Futurity and the River Ridge Riding Club. He was a sixty year member of the Columbus Shrine, a sixty year 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Community Lodge of Columbus. He is survived by his brother, Dr. Charles Pavey of Columbus, Oh.; 2 nieces, Mrs. Miriam E. Hutson of Columbiana, Oh. and Mrs. Ellen Clendenin of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; 10 great-nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Helen Eileen, he was predeceased by a sister Faye Smith. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on June 5, 2002 at First Presbyterian Church of Columbiana, officiated by Dr. Dan Schomer and Dr. Stephen Cramer, both of the church. Friends may call, at the church, for 1* hours before the service. Interment will be in the Columbiana cemetery. PERKINS Winston G. Perkins, age 80, died Sunday, June 2, 2002 at Whetstone Care Center. Survived by son Stephen (Kathleen) Perkins of Powell, OH.; daughters, Nancy (Thomas) Bowersox of Bowersville, OH., Melanie Knoblock of Worthington, OH. and Teri (Marcia) Kinsway of Delaware, OH; grandchildren, Ashley, Jenny and Leslie Perkins, Nicholas, Krista, Laura and Stephanie Bowersox, Matt, Heidi and Alex Knoblock, Maricia and Terin Kinsway; great-grandchild, Madison VanScoy. RIESEN Dennis A. Riesen, of Marengo, Oh., died Saturday, June 1, 2002 at home of heart trouble. He was a stone and brick mason, loved playing the banjo, an avid sports fan, collector of sports memorabilia and Indian artifacts and a great gardener. Graduated from Westerville High School and Ohio Technical Institute with a BA in Electronical Engineering. Preceded in death by son Evan. SMITH Jack Owen Smith, age 70, of Reynoldsburg, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2002 at his home. He was a retired Naval Reserve Commander and Nationwide agent. Charter member Highland Golf Club, Board of Governors C.D.G.A., graduate of Reynoldsburg High School and Washington and Lee University, and an inductee of the Reynoldsburg High School Athletic Wall of Fame. An only child, he is preceded in death by his parents Marvin L. and Thelma J. Smith. Survived by his wife of 48 years, Carole; children, Scott (Robin), Zoa Vicki, and Brad (Teri); grandchildren, Sarah, Matthew, Andrew, Rebecca, Spencer, and Tyler. SPEAKMAN Maria Victoria "Vicki" Speakman, age 48, passed away Monday at home after a courageous 11 year battle with breast cancer. Loving wife, mother, sister, daughter and long time teacher. Vicki served 26 years as a Spanish teacher at Grandview Heights High School, and was a member of St. Christopher Church. Preceded in death by mother Rosa Perez, brothers Alberto Perez Jr. and Jorge Perez.
