He was a Navy and Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7289 and Robert Edwards American Legion Post 358, both in Pulaski. His wife, the former Boneita Tilkens, died in 2000. Alexander Savanovitch, 72, of Syracuse died Friday at Iroquois Nursing Home. Born in Syracuse, he was a graduate of Central Technical High School. He retired in 1993 after 29 years as a firefighter with the city of Syracuse. He and his family operated Alex's Grill on Wilkinson Street since 1925. He received the fire department's Hamilton White Award and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Tigris Shrine. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Survivors: His wife of 47 years, the former Leola Wilson; two daughters, Janice McCullen of Rochester and Tammy Savanovitch of Hannibal; a son, Michael of Camillus; four grandchildren. Stanley "Stas" Swietoniowski, 78, of East Syracuse died Thursday. Born in Syracuse, he lived in East Syracuse 46 years. He retired as a production machinist with Swenton Tool & Die Inc. He was a former communicant of St. Matthew's Church, East Syracuse, and a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. His first wife, the former Alice Smith, died in 1988. Survivors: His wife of six years, the former Lucille Lyon; two stepdaughters, Linda Orlick and Lois C.
