Marian R. Glasner
SIDNEY — Marian Rachel Glasner, 87, of Sidney, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, in the Nursing Care Facility of The Hospital, Sidney.
She was born Nov. 25, 1915, in Englewood, N.J., the daughter of Charles and Laura (Durie) Wortendyke.
She attended Westwood, N.J. High School and graduated from Hackensack Beauty School on Sept. 11, 1936.
She was married to Kenneth A. Glasner in March of 1937, in Park Ridge, N.J. Mr. Glasner passed away in December of 1985.
Marian was employed as a cashier for over 25 years at the Sidney Elementary School cafeteria, retiring in 1987. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Sidney and a current member of the West Bainbridge Baptist Church.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Donald Kenneth and Linda Glasner of Bainbridge; her daughters and a son-in-law, Janet Marian Wright of Sidney and Carole Ann and Donald Baker Jr. of Mobile, Ala.; her grandchildren, Jeffrey Glasner, James Glasner, Laura Glasner, Sharon Wright, Douglas Wright, Stephen Wright, and Maj. Daniel Wright, Matthew Baker and Andrew Baker; her great-grandchildren, Cassandra and Katrina Glasner, Devin Gould, Derek and Ericka Simpson, Benjamin, Halle, Jocelyn, Christopher, Catherine and Rachel Wright.
Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at the West Bainbridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jeffrey Cutting and the Rev. David Wood, officiating.
Burial will be later in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.
Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, when the family will be in attendance.
Memorial contributions may be made to the West Bainbridge Baptist Church, State Highway 206, Bainbridge, N.Y. 13733.

Lyle G. Hotaling
DELHI — Lyle G. Hotaling, 65, most recently of Delhi, and formerly of Sidney, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Countryside Care Center in Delhi.
He was born in Franklin on Dec. 18, 1937, the son of Edward and Daisy (Marshall) Hotaling.
He married Irene R. Finch on Aug. 31, 1958, and she passed away on June 18, 1999.
For 26 years, retiring in 1992, Lyle was a custodian at the Sidney Central School.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Gary and Sheri Hotaling of Mount Upton, Barbara and Gerald Hicks of Franklin, Daniel Hotaling of Norwich, and David and Wendy Hotaling of Mount Upton; 11 grandchildren. He is also survived by his two sisters, and a brother, Leone Barlow and her husband, Ralph of Treadwell, Charlotte Burger of Mohawk, and Lloyd Hotaling of Franklin.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Kandy Hotaling in 1980.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at 1 p.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Kenneth Baldwin, officiating.
Burial will be later in the Walton Cemetery.
Friends may call on Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, at which time the family will be in attendance.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.
Lyle's family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the Countryside Care Center and the Hospice staff, for all the love and care given to him during his illness.

Kenneth A. Howe
OXFORD — Kenneth A. Howe, 71, a resident at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford, and formerly of Bainbridge, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday evening, Dec. 24, 2002, in Oxford.
He was born Feb. 23, 1931, in Otego, the son of the late Elmer and Josie Buchanan Howe.
On July 23, 1955, he married Charlene Bennett in Bainbridge.
Ken was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country during the Korean War. For 43 years he was employed by the Amphenol Corporation, Sidney.
He is survived by wife of 47 years, Charlene Howe, Bainbridge; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David and Kathy Howe, Bedford, Wyo., and Daniel Howe, Bainbridge; daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Ronald Holter, Jamestown; brother and sister-in-law, Jesse and Rose Howe, Harpursville; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Myrtle and Kenneth Kinnie, Sidney Center, Ruth and Richard Bristol, Sidney Center, and Marjorie and Clifton Steele, Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Two brothers, Raymond and Oscar Howe; and two sisters, Isabelle Cawley and Helen King predeceased Kenneth.
Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with his son the Rev. David Howe, officiating.
Friends are invited to call from noon until time of the service at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral chapel.
Burial will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, in the spring of 2003.

Thomas J. Marino
ONEONTA — Thomas J. Marino, 75, of Oneonta, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Hospital Nursing Home.
He was born in Oneonta on Jan. 29, 1927, the son of Frank and Jennie (Rosetta) Marino.
He married Reta Cohn on Aug. 27, 1959.
Tom served in the U.S. Army during World War II and Korea, and was discharged as a Sergeant.
For many years he worked in various clubs and restaurants as a bartender.
He held life memberships in the Oneonta Moose Club and the Elbert Patten VFW Post of Oneonta.
He is survived by his wife, Reta Marino, of Oneonta; his children, Michael Marino of Oneonta, Thomas J. Marino Jr. of Worcester, and Bruce Marino, Pamela Marino, Lisa Cannon Marino and Cynthia Marino, all of Oneonta; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; his brothers and sisters, Anne Marino and Dolly Angellotti of Oneonta, Mary Stanton of Cato, and Veronica Marino and Dolores Colone, also of Oneonta; his brothers, Frank Marino of Syracuse, Paul Marino, Albert Marino and Ron Marino of Oneonta; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his son, Johnathan Marino; and by two brothers, Ralph and Karl Marino.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating.
Friends may call Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.
Burial will be later in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Rose Schwinn
TREADWELL — Rose Leidner Schwinn, 92, of Treadwell, passed away on Tuesday morning, Dec. 24, 2002, at Hearthstone Home for Adults in Hobart, where she had been residing since June 2001.
The daughter of Phillip and Marie (Nissler) Burger, she was born May 2, 1910, in Nuremberg, Germany, coming to N.Y. City in 1923.
Twice-widowed, her first husband, Anton J. Leidner, died in 1943; later marrying John J. Schwinn on Sept. 7, 1947, who died in 1959.
Formerly of Oceanside, Rose came to Treadwell 30 years ago, where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, and was a communicant of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Delhi.
Surviving are her children, Rosemarie (Harold) Leitenberger, Treadwell, Robert A. (Patricia) Leidner, Basking Ridge, N.J., George Schwinn, Middle Island, and Anna Spillett, Yaphank; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie Maier, Nuremberg, Germany.
Friends are invited to call on Friday, Dec. 27, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance 7 to 9 p.m., and a Vigil service will be at 8:30 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Church, Delhi, with the Rev. James McDevitt presiding. Burial will be later in the Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell.
Memorial contributions to Treadwell Emergency Squad will be appreciated.

Eli H. Baird
ONEONTA — Eli H. "Bud" Baird Jr., of Oneonta, died suddenly on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002.
Bud was born on June 28, 1925, in Oneonta, to Eli H. and Helen R. Jacobs Baird. Eli H. Baird Jr. and Anita Mae Lewis were united in marriage on July 19, 1947, in Oneonta.
Baird worked in the building trade for several years including Lother Fieg Builders for 12 years. Baird then worked for SUCO for 27 years in the maintenance department before retiring in 1987.
Bud was an active member of First Baptist Church of Oneonta, where he was a former chairman of the Stewardship Committee, choir member, head usher and served on other church committees when needed. He was a former member of the VFW and leader of the Table Toppers 4-H club. He was a retired member of the CSEA.
He loved cars and built many models. He also loved doing odd jobs around the home and walking his dog Peanut to the park.
Bud is survived by his wife, Anita M. Lewis Baird; daughters, Charlotte and husband, William Walker of Monroe, Conn., Nancy Hughes of Delhi, the Rev. Gail M. Baird of Boonville and Lisa Baird of Amherst; grandchildren, William Walker Jr. of Penellis Park, Fla., Dr. Shari White and husband, Brad, of Quarryville, Pa., Heather Neighbour and husband, Buzzy, of Oneonta and Leeann Vrabel and husband, Jeff, of Oak Park, Ill.; great-grandsons, Ryan and Blake Neighbour; sisters-in-law, Ann Baird and Elaine Baird, both of Oneonta, several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Peanut.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Jane Baird; three brothers, Harold "Corky" Baird, John Baird Sr. and James Baird Sr.; and a nephew, John Baird Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Dec. 29, at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church. Calling hours will be at the church from 2 to 3 p.m.
Interment will be in the spring at Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Gordon Duquette
VALLEJO, Calif. — Mr. Gordon Edwin "Duke" Duquette, 64, of Vallejo, Calif., died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at home, after a brief illness with cancer.
He was born May 24, 1938, in Plattsburgh, N.Y. He lived in Vallejo for 44 years.
He was a physical science technician supervisor for Mare Island for 33 years, retiring in 1994; and he also worked part time at T and L Dental Laboratory in Martinez, Calif., for seven years.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
Duke was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, NARFE member, former Bibett Board member and Navy Yard Association.
He enjoyed fishing and motor home traveling.
Duke is survived by his wife, Veronica B. Duquette, of Vallejo; his daughter, Judy Duquette of Minnesota; stepdaughters, Natalie Leesmann and Sonya Domingo, both of Vallejo; sons, Eugene and Michael (Susan), both of Vallejo, and Gordon R. Duquette of Fairfield; sisters, Linda Salem of Sloansville, N.Y.; brother, Joseph L. Duquette of Tulsa, Okla.; 11 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Leon and Elizabeth Duquette; his son, Patrick Duquette; and his sisters, Gisele Sommers, Micheline Joramello and Janet Piccola.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Richmondville, N.Y., with the Rev. Gary Edmister and the Rev. William Pruess.
Inurnment will be private.

Gertrude Silvernell
UNADILLA — Gertrude G. Silvernell, teacher of several generations of the Unadilla community, passed away at her home, 14 Bridge St., on Dec. 25, 2002. She was 101 years old.
Born Gertrude Youmans Genung in Unadilla on May 16, 1901, the only child of May Jane Youmans and George E. Genung, she spent her entire life in Unadilla and neighboring Crookerville.
After three years of high school, she graduated from Unadilla Academy in 1918, and the Unadilla Training Class the following year. She began teaching at the age of 18 in the East Sidney district school.
Following one year of teaching, she entered the State Normal Training School at Oneonta, now SUNY Oneonta. She graduated in 1921, and while at State Normal she was a member of the Clio Sorority.
Mrs. Silvernell continued her teaching career at Bainbridge School and later transferred to Unadilla School, where she taught third grade until her retirement in 1963, after 43 years of service. In recognition of her teaching excellence, she was inducted into Delta Kappa Gamma, the honorary international teachers society.
On Sept. 2, 1926, she married George W. Silvernell. They shared 46 years of marriage. She was actively involved with her husband in the operation of the Joyce Furniture Store and the Joyce Funeral Home in Unadilla. Her service to the community was recognized by the Unadilla Chamber of Commerce in 1985.
Mrs. Silvernell was a member of the Unadilla Women's Club and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of St. Matthew's Church in Unadilla, where her funeral service will be conducted at noon on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002. There will be no visitation.
Interment will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.
She is survived by her daughter, Sarah-May S. Tims and her husband, Fred, of Springfield Center; and her son, George R. Silvernell, an Oneonta attorney. Also surviving are three granddaughters, Catherine, Charlotte and Elizabeth Tims; as well as several cousins.
Expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to the Unadilla Public Library, P.O. Box 632, Unadilla or to the Alumni Association of SUNY Oneonta, 128 Alumni Hall, Oneonta, N.Y., 13820.

Orville S. Smith
BAINBRIDGE — Orville S. Smith, 76, of Bainbridge, passed away Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at his home.
He was born May 31, 1926, son of the late Jay and Ida Drachler Smith in Bainbridge.
Orville served his country in the United States Air Force from 1944 to 1947.
He married Mabel Matts in September of 1944 in Bainbridge. She survives.
Orville worked for Borden's Chemical Company and was a retired mail carrier for the Bainbridge rural routes. Mr. Smith also raised chickens, grew Christmas trees and was an avid pool player.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bainbridge, where he served as an elder.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mabel Smith, of Bainbridge; three sons and daughters-in-law, Danny Smith, of Bainbridge, David and Valerie Smith, of Bainbridge, Orville Jr. and Molly Smith of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters and sons-in-law Sandra and James Stephenson, of Surprise, Ariz., and Sally Irvolino, of Syracuse; eight grandchildren, Terry Slodki, Tammy Terry, Shari Murphy, David Smith Jr., Joseph Smith, Cherish Smith, Ashley Smith and Travis Smith, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A son, Robert Smith, a brother, Edwin Smith and a sister, Eleanor Stoutenberg, predeceased him.
Memorial services will be held Monday, Dec. 30, at the First Presbyterian Church of Bainbridge at 2 p.m. The Rev. Douglas Horne will officiate.
Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge, in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society and the First Presbyterian Church of Bainbridge.

Harriet N. Smith
ROXBURY — Harriet N. Smith, 79, of Roxbury, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Benedictine Hospital, Kingston.
She was born Aug. 27, 1923, in Roxbury, to Robert and Agness (Nichol) Smith.
Harriet was a social worker for the YWCA in Gary, Ind., early in her life.
She spent most of her life in Roxbury and was a member of the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church of Roxbury. She graduated from Roxbury High School and St. Lawrence University in Canton, and received her master's degree in social work in Boston, Mass.
She served on the Kirkside Adult Home's board of directors, was a member of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and served on the Margaretville Memorial Hospital's board of directors and the Mountainside Residential Care Center's board of directors.
An active board member for 33 years, her commitment to the hospital never waned. In the year 2002, she received the Citizen of the Year Keene Roadman Award for her many years of service to the Margaretville Memorial Hospital and Auxiliary.
She was a member of the National Paperweight Association and an overseer at Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts.
A very important part of her life was traveling, which she enjoyed.
She is survived by several cousins.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, at the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra, officiating.
Burial will be in Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.
In memory of Harriet N. Smith, memorials may be sent to the Roxbury Fire Department, Roxbury, or the Memorial Fund at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.
