Philip J. Garlick
MILFORD CENTER — Philip John Garlick, 72, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare after an extended illness.
He was born Aug. 30, 1930, in Milford, the son of Clark and Florence (Palmer) Garlick.
He married Jane Robinson April 1951, in Worcester.
A lifelong area resident, Philip worked for the Oneonta School System as a steam fireman and later in the maintenance department for many years retiring in 1986.
He enjoyed repairing electronics on the side as well as collecting stamps. He was also an avid NASCAR fan and a history buff. Philip was a member of the Oneonta Pool League,
He is survived by his wife, Jane E. Garlick, of Milford Center; three daughters and sons-in-law, Diana Lynn and Larry Covell of Oneonta, Ann Garlick and John Branson of Cherry Valley, and Kim and James McElroy of Otego; four grandchildren, Debbie and Tim Baranska of Clayton, N.C., Dustin St. Onge of Otego and Ashley and Heather White of Otego; a brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Margaret Garlick of Laurens; a sister-in-law, Eva (Robinson) Galligan; and a brother-in-law, Richard Robinson.
Funeral and committal services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. William Laing, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Oneonta officiating.
Calling hours will be offered on Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m.
Burial will be in the spring at the Milford Center Cemetery, Milford Center.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Milford Fire Department and Emergency Squad, Milford, NY 13808 in loving memory of Philip John Garlick.

Ruth A. Keller
FLY CREEK — Mrs. Ruth A. Keller, 86, of Fly Creek and formerly of Hollywood, Fla., died early Wednesday morning, Dec. 18, 2002, at her daughter's home in Fly Creek.
She was born on Dec. 25, 1915, in New York City, a daughter of Meyer and Florence (Isaacson) Aronson.
She married Bernard Morris Keller on Feb. 6, 1938, in New York City. Mr. Keller died on July 12, 1968.
Mrs. Keller was raised and educated in New York City. In 1944, she and her husband moved to southern Florida, where she had resided until moving, five months ago, to her daughter Joan's home in Fly Creek.
Mrs. Keller is survived by three daughters, Joan Ferrando and her husband, Vladimir Melnichenko, and Renee Gold and her husband, Dr. Michael Gold, all of Fly Creek, and Gail Failla of Hollywood, Fla.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Arnold Aronson of Raleigh, N.C.
Burial will take place on Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, in Mt. Nebo Kendall Memorial Gardens in Kendall, Fla.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Rose Edwards
COOPERSTOWN — On Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, Rose Edwards, passed on after surgery related to lung cancer.
Rose was born Sept. 11, 1920, in Venango County, Pennsylvania, to Ambrose W. McSparren and Isabel Stewart Brown McSparren.
She attended Franklin High School and Franklin Commercial College in Pennsylvania.
On April 21, 1943, she married 2nd Lt. David W. Edwards in the Deming Air Force Base Chapel in Deming, New Mexico. During the early part of their marriage Rose and David lived in Pennsylvania, Kansas, Texas and California. In 1960, they moved to Ilion, and in 1970, to 83 Chestnut St. in Cooperstown.
In addition to her parents she is predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Major David W. Edwards, USAF (Retired), (April 4, 2000); her daughter, Fay Morley Edwards, PhD. (Feb. 13, 1988); two brothers, John C. McSparren and Thomas G. Brown; and a sister, Mrs. Robert (Isabelle) Cottingham.
Rose is survived by her son, Keith DeForrest Edwards of Cooperstown; brother and sister-in-law, George and Wilma Brown of St. Petersburg, Fla.; sister, Mrs. Jack (Nellie) Langley of Gold Bar, Wash.; sister-in-law, Mrs. John (Jackie) Crawford of Ashtabula, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Rose opened the Edwards Bed & Breakfast in Cooperstown in 1983, and since that time "her family" has grown worldwide. Rose was a member of the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce, New York State Historical Association, absentee member of the Historical Club of Ilion, Auxiliary member of the Retired Officers Association, a former member of the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital Outreach Program that helps women deal with having breast cancer surgery.
Most recently, Rose was a Volunteer Master Gardener with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Otsego County and contributed to the Master Gardener Newsletter as "Dr. Rose Knows."
Rose always lived life her way and in the process "adopted" a lot of people. All her "children" will miss "having a cup of tea with Rose."
On Dec. 3, 2002, Rose did what she always wanted to do. She and Bill and Caroline Murray drove down to "The Meadows" and performed for the residents there. With Rose on the piano and Bill on trombone and Caroline leading the singing they were a sight to behold with their straw hats on and the music, was as usual, uplifting and joyous. Rose was a beautiful person who gave to people without question. Rose's wit, intelligence, knowledge and open-heartedness will be missed by all that knew and loved her.
If you choose to send flowers, they will rerouted to "The Meadows" in Rose's name, or specifically "From Rose Edwards the Piano Player."
However, Rose would prefer that you send donations to either the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center at M.I.B. Hospital or to the Master Gardener Program, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Otsego County in Cooperstown.
Keith Edwards would like to thank all the people at Bassett Hospital for their care especially Nancy Morris and the other ICU nurses. A special thank you goes to Matt Johnson for his concern and professionalism as an advocate for Rose's rights as a patient and as a human being. We all thank you Matt, for being the angel that Rose needed. And thank you Holly Hren for being a good friend.
There will be no funeral, as her body was donated to Albany Medical Center as per her wishes.
An open house will be held at 83 Chestnut St. in Cooperstown, Rose's home, on Sunday, Jan. 19. 2003, from noon until 5 p.m. All who knew her are welcome.
Virginia Bryceland
ONEONTA — Virginia "Ruth" Bryceland, 66, of Oneonta passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at the Albany Medical Center.
She was born on Dec. 4, 1936, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Joseph and Violet (Jackson) Cook.
She married John Bryceland on Aug. 1, 1959, in Toronto, Ontario.
She worked at Astrocom Electronics for many years where she held the position of personnel director.
Ruth has been a resident of Oneonta for the past 37 years. Prior to that she had lived in Flushing, and Toronto, Ontario.
She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Oneonta and an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast.
She was a loving, caring wife, mother and grandmother and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years, John Bryceland, of Oneonta; a daughter, Janet M. Collins and her husband, Jeffrey of Oneonta; a son, Lindsay J. Bryceland and his wife, Beverly of Olympia, Wash.; a daughter, Bonnie J. Stein and her husband, Timothy of Eagle River, Alaska; a daughter, Sandra A. Lynch and her husband, Michael Lynch Jr., of Oneonta; three brothers, Robert Cook, Ronald Cook and Gary Cook; two sisters. Sandra Hill and Jean Olafson. Also her grandchildren, Ryan, Robert, Donovan, Niko, Sadie, Ryan, Daniel and Mary Katherine; and many nieces and nephews.
Five brothers, Gordon, Douglas, Kenny, Donald and Wesley; and two sisters, Betty and Linda predeceased her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor, officiating.
Burial will take place in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.
Friends may call Friday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be present.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220-3049 in Ruth's memory.

Elizabeth J. Jones
BAINBRIDGE — Elizabeth (Bette) J. Jones, 71, of Bainbridge passed away Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at The Hospital.
She was born Sept. 13, 1931, in Oneonta, the daughter of Orlo M. Couse and Mira Bedford Hodges.
She was married to Henry J. Jones on Sept. 1, 1951, in Milford.
Bette has been a lifelong area resident and a former employee of Amphenol Corp. in Sidney. She was an organ and piano player who performed at many commencement ceremonies at Unatego Jr.-Sr. High School, Cooperstown Tent-Trailer Park and The Otesaga Hotel, Cooperstown.
She was an avid camper and was a former member of Bullthisle and Lazy Hitch-A-Long camping groups.
Bette is survived by her husband, Henry J. Jones, of Bainbridge; her daughter and son-in-law, Joi Marie and Thomas Ingalls of Oneonta; her grandchildren, Shawn Ingalls of Misawa, Japan, and Joseph and Cyrstal Ingalls of Oneonta. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Tyrell and Akyra Ingalls.
She was predeceased by her mother, Mira Bedford Hodges and her father, Orlo M. Couse; and her daughter, Ea Ann Jones.
Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church, Unadilla, officiating.
Burial will be later in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.
There will be no calling hours.

Marguerite Eckler
SEWARD — Marguerite Eckler, 79, passed away Dec. 18, 2002, with her family by her side in Cooperstown.
She was born May 17, 1923, the daughter of Perry and Ada W. (Chase) Ten Eyck.
She graduated from Cobleskill High School in 1941.
She was mostly a stay at home wife and mother. Her church and her family were her life, always putting others' needs before hers.
Mrs. Eckler was a member and financial secretary of the Zion Lutheran Church of Seward, sang in the choir, the Women's group and the Seward Thursday Club.
She is predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Earl F. Eckler.
Mrs. Eckler is survived by, Linda Dudley of Queensbury, Anita and Mike Milligan of Queensbury; four sons, Earl C. and Faith Eckler of Schoharie, Jeffrey L. and Gail Eckler of Cobleskill, Lawrence T. and Linda Eckler of Ancram, Benjamin P. Eckler of Sharon Springs; one sister, Irene Ten Eyck Silver of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at 4 p.m. at Zion St. John's Lutheran Church, Seward. Calling hours will be held Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Burial will be in Westville Cemetery, Middlefield.

John F. Gifford
OXFORD — John F. Gifford, 84, formerly of Oxford and most recently of Norwich, passed away Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 18, 2002, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born in Norwich, John spent most of his life in the Oxford area and attended their local schools. Following his graduation, he furthered his education by attending Hartwick College where he earned his B.S. degree in Chemistry and graduated in 1940.
John entered the United States Army in September 1940 and served his country until his honorable discharge in October 1945.
Returning home, he became employed as a bookkeeper by Webb and Sons of Sherburne, worked there for about 20 years, and then was employed by Mirabito's, also as a bookkeeper.
John was a life member of the American Legion Post of Oxford, and a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree.
Born March 30, 1918, in Norwich, John was the son of Eugene and Marion (Long) Gifford.
On March 22, 1980, in Oxford, he married Mary Walton, who survives.
Besides his wife, Mary, of Norwich, John is survived by his step-children, Richard Hendrickson of Greene, Helen Anthony and husband, Lynn of Oxford, Robert Hendrickson of Oxford, James Hendrickson and wife, Connie of Virginia, and Michael Hendrickson and wife, Vickie of Norwich; his brother, Myron Gifford of Sidney; and several stepgrandchildren; and stepgreat-grandchildren. Also surviving are his nieces and nephews, Cathy Green of Unadilla, Susan Marin of Bainbridge, David Gifford of Sidney, Linda Marin of Bainbridge, and Matthew Green of Unadilla.
Funeral services for John will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Douglas Cunningham officiating.
Interment with full military rites will be held at a later date in St. Joseph's Cemetery of Oxford.
There will be no calling hours.
I. Linnea Deming
GUILFORD — I. Linnea Deming, 75, longtime Guilford resident, passed away Friday morning, Dec. 20, 2002, at her home on the Norwich-Guilford Road.
Linnea was born May 18, 1927, the daughter of Einar and Sarah (Johanson) Dahl in Mineola, Long Island, and at an early age came to the Guilford area where she attended and graduated from the Guilford school.
On Oct. 18, 1947, in Redwood City, Calif., she married Roger Wesley Deming.
Linnea was employed by the Farmers Home Administration for many years as an office management assistant. While working in this capacity, she traveled to many agency offices in New York state and the Virgin Islands. She retired as assistant county supervisor at the Norwich FHA office in 1989.
Linnea's most enjoyable times were those with her family. She was a communicant of the United Methodist Church of Sidney.
Linnea is survived by her husband, Roger, of Guilford; her daughter, Carla Peck, and husband, Clifford, of Mount Upton; her son, Alan Deming, and his friend Betty Neumaier of Waupun, Wis.; and her grandchildren, Robert Peck and wife, Robin, of Mount Upton, Cheri Hess and husband, Alan, of Norwich, Brian Peck and wife, Tammy, of South New Berlin, Danny Deming and wife, Terri, of Waupun, Wis., and Dustin Deming, also of Waupun, Wis. Also surviving are her great-grandchildren Casey Peck, Lauren Peck, Tia Peck, Jordan Hess and Collin Deming; her, stepgreat-grandchildren Brent and Christopher White; her sister, Eira Miles, of Fairfield, Calif.; her niece, Inga Soule, and husband, Jay; nephew, Eric Miles, and wife, Tami; and great-nieces, Sarah Soule, Sylvia Soule and Taylor Miles.
Funeral services for Linnea will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday from the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. David Masland, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Sidney, will officiate.
Interment will be at a later date in the Greenlawn Cemetery of Bainbridge.
Friends may call at the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.

William Wust
EDMESTON — William (Willie) Wust, 79, of Edmeston, died at his home on Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, with his family at his side.
He was born in Saltillo, Mexico, to Frederick and Mary Burgmuller Wust on Nov. 30, 1923.
In 1927, he moved to the Edmeston and Pittsfield area, where he spent his childhood and helped his parents on their farm.
He was a graduate of the Edmeston Central School, where he was noted for his athletic ability in gymnastics.
He married Irene M. Lent on Aug. 9, 1948, in Edmeston, who survives. On Aug. 25, 1989, he married Borghild (Betty) Johnson, who survives.
Willie owned and operated Wust Garage, Wust Saw Mill and Wust Excavation in Edmeston, beginning his businesses in 1948.
Everyone in the area knew and admired him.
Willie was an avid stock car enthusiast who built and raced cars No. 43 and No. 88 at the area race tracks in the '50s and '60s. He was inducted in the Central New York Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame in 1997. He was also a member of the Edmeston Fire Department for many years.
He is survived by his five sons and families, Charles and Nadine Wust, Sidney Wust, William Wust Jr. and Susan Mumbulo, John M. and Shelly Wust and Richard J. and Michele Wust, all of Edmeston; three stepchildren and their families, Lennart and Carol Johnson of Burlington, Henry and Janet Johnson of Chambersburgh, Pa., and Linnea and Larry Nelson of Hartwick; two sisters, Mrs. Olga Howard of Missouri and Mrs. Art (Charlotte) Dietrich of Florida; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family expresses its thanks to Elsie Belden and Denese Brazee for caring for Willie in his home and also to the Edmeston Fire Department for all their responses.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Dakin Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 23. Call Dakin Funeral Home for the place of the funeral.
Burial will be later in Union Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Edmeston Fire Department.
Quinn V. Canaday
UNADILLA — Quinn V. Canaday, 42, of Unadilla, N.Y., passed away Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at his home.
He was born June 9, 1960, in San Diego, Calif., the son of Sidney and Roberta (Bailey) Canaday.
He was married to Etta E. Masouras on Dec. 31, 1984, in San Diego, Calif.
He moved to the area in 1992, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a former tractor-trailer driver for Maines Paper and Food Services Inc., of Conklin, N.Y.
He will be missed by all his family and his very special friends.
Quinn is survived by his wife, Etta E. Canaday of Unadilla; his daughter, Patricia Harkins of Charlotte, N.C.; his son, Staff Sgt. Eric Harkins of Schwienfurt, Germany; his parents, Sidney and Roberta Canaday of Oneonta; a brother, Todd Canaday of Texas; a sister, Leann Stephens of Pennsylvania; his nephews, Ronnie, Matthew and Nicholas; and a niece, Kateland.
He was predeceased by a niece, Alissa West, and his grandmother, Evelyn Bennie.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 23, at the Westcott Funeral Home, at 123 Main St. in Unadilla, N.Y., with Pastor Kenneth Brookens of the Living Water Faith Fellowship Church of Oneonta officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
