Elmer M. Harmon

FLY CREEK — Elmer Meredith Harmon, 74, of Fly Creek, passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at his home.

Elmer was born Nov. 19, 1927, the son of Erskine and Gladys Harmon in Des Moines, Iowa.

He served his country in the U.S. Army and was discharged.

Upon graduation from Harvard University in 1950, he received a bachelor of science degree in philosophy. After earning his master's in economics from Columbia University, he earned his Ph.D., in economics in 1956 from the same college.

Elmer taught at CCNY in New York City for several years before joining the staff at the Bowery Savings Bank where he was soon appointed assistant vice president. Shortly afterwards, he was nominated senior vice president and treasurer. It was the first time an economist had been made a full-time member of the official staff of a mutual savings bank.

After retiring from the bank, Elmer pursued his lifelong dream. In 1982, he moved to his chicken farm in Fly Creek and became a prominent member of the community. From 1982 to 1989, he farmed and from 1990 to 1999, he was an enthusiastic employee of the dietary department at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Elmer was a remarkable human being because he had a special gift of giving, which was most noticeable in his ability to make people happy. His vivacious and entertaining voice captured the hearts of all, and it was no surprise that his middle name was "Happy."

Elmer leaves behind his wife, Bessie; two sons, Oskar and Stig; one daughter, Tam; four grandchildren; and one brother and sister, Don and Betty.
