Owen R. Dewey

SIDNEY — Owen R. Dewey, 69, of 10 Hatfield Ave., Sidney, passed away Monday morning, Sept. 16, 2002, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.

He was born June 30, 1933, in Binghamton, the son of the late Melvin and Grace Paterson Dewey.

On Oct. 28, 1955, he married Betty Jane Underwood. She predeceased him on Jan. 20, 2002.

He was a Korean veteran with the U.S. Navy.

For several years Owen was a salesperson with the Prudential Insurance Company in the Tri-Town area. He retired in 1975.

He was a member of the Charles L. Jacobi Post 183 American Legion, Sidney; Loyal Order of the Moose No. 277 Sidney; a 30 year member of the Delaware County Republican Committee; and in 1993, was named the Republican of the Year. Owen was a trustee for the Village of Sidney from April 1965 to March 1974. He was a former member of the Tri-Town Stamp Club and the Prospect Hill Cemetery Board of Directors.

He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Lorna Dewey, Apex, N.C.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheryl and David Marmillion, Irmo, S.C., and JoAnn and Richard Mirabito, Norwich; four grandchildren, Jeffrey R. Mirabito, Caryn D. Marmillion, Jason O. Mirabito and Hayden S. Dewey.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Patricia Robinson, pastor of the First Congregational Church, Sidney, officiating. Burial will follow with military honors in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience on Wednesday at the funeral chapel with his family in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the memorial fund at the N.Y.S. Veteran's Home, 4211 State Highway 220, Oxford, NY 13830-4305.

Jerome R. Gaydos

SUMMIT — Jerome "Jerry" R. Gaydos, 62, of Mud Lake Road died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, following a brief illness.

Jerry was born Feb. 29, 1940, in Manhattan, the son of Frances Gaydos. He and his mother moved to the area in 1955.

Jerry did custodial work at the Warnerville Police Barracks and for the Schoharie County Highway Department. He had also worked for and was retired from the Schoharie ARC Toepath Industries.

Jerry's hobbies included hunting, western movies, his CB radio and scanner along with Chinese food and a good pipe.

He was predeceased by his mother, Frances Gaydos Galgan. There are no immediate family members surviving, but he leaves behind a wide variety of friends who had known him through the years.

A funeral liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at St. Vincent de Paul Church,  Washington Heights, Cobleskill, with the Rev. Thomas F. Berardi officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Summit Cemetery.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Summit Volunteer Rescue or Fire Department, State Route 10, Summit, NY 12175.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.

Marion Sprague

MIDDLEFIELD — Marion Sprague, 91, of The Meadows and formerly of Oneonta died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at The Meadows in Middlefield.

She was born in Morris on June 21, 1911, the daughter of Delos and Florence E. (Bailey) Livingston.

She was married to Milton Osborn and then to Harold Sprague. They are both deceased.

As a child, she attended the one-room schoolhouse in Dimmock Hollow. She lived a full rich life and was loved by all her family and friends and will be missed by all.

She is survived by her daughter, Wanda Predmore and husband, LeRoy of South Otselic; her grandchildren, Barbara Young of Sherburne and Bill Cane of New Berlin; several great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and great-great-great-grandchildren; making five generations.

She was predeceased by a son, Robert Osborn; and granddaughter, Shirley Hollenbeck.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Keith VanDewerker of the West End Community Baptist Church officiating. Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. on Wednesday until service time at 1 p.m.

Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery in Morris at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Victoreen Walter

ONEONTA — Victoreen (Dolly) Walter, 94, of Oneonta died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002.

She was born July 26, 1908, in Pinelawn, Long Island, the daughter of John and Emilia (Linke) Mayer.

She was married to Sidney Walter. He predeceased her.

Victoreen is survived by her children, Arline Attanasso of Oneonta and Doris and Ralph Thomas of South Orange, N.J.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Her infant daughter, Mary predeceased her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Edward Ryan officiating.

Burial will follow in Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale, Long Island.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Hazel R. McGoey

ONEONTA — Hazel R. McGoey, 90, of Oneonta died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at the Fox Hospital Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born May 31, 1912, in Brooklyn, the daughter of John and Mary (Hyland) Macken.

She married Joseph Xavier McGoey on July 11, 1936. Mr. McGoey predeceased her in 1973.

Hazel had worked as a telephone operator for several years prior to becoming a bank teller in Freeport, Long Island.

When she moved to the Oneonta area she became an active volunteer for the Salvation Army.

Hazel was an avid Mets fan, enjoyed bowling and especially loved to play cards.

She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Joseph X. and Cathy McGoey of Massapequa, Long Island, James X. McGoey of Hampton Bays, Long Island, and Mary and Frederick Muller III of Oneonta; 11 grandchildren, Frederick IV, Patrick, Joseph and Erin Muller, Janine and James McGoey, Heather Batisti, Kevin and Donna McGoey, and Tricia and Lauren McGoey; two great-granddaughters, Erica and Blaire; one brother, Edmund Macken of New Jersey.

Hazel was predeceased by her son, John (Buddy) P. McGoey on Aug. 16, 1996; one brother, James Macken; and four sisters, Mae McGarrity, Madeline Capell, Catherine A. McTernan and Eileen Weger.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Edward Ryan officiating.

Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be present.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760 in loving memory of Hazel R. McGoey.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Anna Mae Decker

BURLINGTON FLATS — Anna Mae Decker, 98, of Burlington Flats, formerly of Lake Mary, Fla., and Hamilton, Ohio, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at the home of her daughter-in-law, Joanne Decker, in Burlington Flats.

Anna was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on Aug. 4, 1904, the daughter of Isaac and Ella Nora (Gross) Craven.

On Feb. 2, 1924, she married Oscar Decker. He predeceased her in 1964.

Anna was a kind and loving mother and grandmother and will be remembered for her crocheting and enjoyment of jigsaw puzzles as well as her love of cooking. She was an excellent seamstress and was self-employed in that area for many years.

Anna is survived by her daughter-in-law, Joanne Decker; and her grandchildren, Cheryl Ann Cruit and Alberta Ann Rougeux; her great-grandchildren, Carrie, Jo and Chad John Cruit.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her children, John W. Decker and Verna Lou Decker; her grandson, John William Decker II; her brothers, Walter and Robert Craven; and sister, Mildred DeBord.

Graveside funeral services and interment will be held Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton, Ohio. Family and friends may call just prior to the services from 1 to 2 p.m. at Webb-Noonan Funeral Home, Hamilton, Ohio.

The family requests memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Miller's Mills Baptist Church, 647 Miner's Mills Road, West Winfield, NY 13491.

Funeral arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, and Webb-Noonan Funeral Home, Hamilton, Ohio.

Julia Ann Somers

SEWARD — Mrs. Julia Ann Somers, 79, passed away Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at her home after a lengthy illness.

She was born on Nov. 27, 1922, in Harpersfield, Ohio, the daughter of Raphael and Mary (Heiter) Zido.

On Aug. 20, 1942, she married Kenneth Guy Somers in the Parsonage in Lawyersville. He survives.

An area resident for 60 years, Mrs. Somers was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; seven daughters, Marlene and Robert Langenbahn of Cobleskill, Diana and Richard Smith of Cobleskill, Patricia and Frank Schneider of Warnerville, Susan Rickard and William June of Cooperstown, Lona and Joseph Connizzo of Cobleskill, Barbara and Elden Cater of Schenectady and Nancy and John Hudson of Charlton; two sisters, Hazel Somers of Delanson and Catherine Brown of Carlisle; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Joan Palmer in 1996; a sister, Mary Davenport; and three brothers, Lewis Zido, Robert Zido and James Zido.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

A memorial service will be held at a time and place to be announced at a later date.

Contributions in Mrs. Somers' memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, Cobleskill, N.Y., or the American Heart Association.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Carl D. Broadwell

GLENVILLE — Carl D. Broadwell, 91, of Sacandaga Road, Glenville, passed away Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at Ellis Hospital after a long illness.

He was born on Jan. 11, 1911, in Laurens.

He was a lifelong resident of Oneonta, before moving to Glenville one year ago.

He was an autobody craftsman for various autobody shops, lastly employed by Scavo's Body Shop in Oneonta. He excelled in his technical ability of auto body works, even to redoing antique cars.

Carl is survived by his wife, Carol Nelson Broadwell, of Glenville; two sons, Charles Broadwell of Carlisle and Edward Broadwell of Maryland; two daughters, Anna DiMarco of Glenville and Natalie DeAngelis of Clifton, N.J.; 12 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Cora Kenyon Broadwell.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Light's Funeral Home, 1428 State St., with the Rev. Jack Lottey, interim pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church, officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

It has been requested by the family that there be no calling hours.

Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

If desired, contributions may be made in his memory to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to Ellis Hospital I.C.U., 1101 Nott St., Schenectady, NY 12308.

Services are by the Light's Funeral Home, Schenectady.

Daniel Tompkins

FREEHOLD, N.J. — Daniel D. Tompkins, 92, of Applewood Estates, Freehold, N.J., died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at his residence.

Mr. Tompkins was born in Ridgefield, N.J., and was formerly a resident of Montclair, N.J., for many years and has been a resident of Applewood Estates since 1994.

He was formerly a commanding officer at the Civilian Conservation Corps at Gilbert Lake State Park in Laurens, N.Y.

Husband of the late Marion Shearer Tompkins; he is survived by his daughter, Jane T. Carnoy; his three grandchildren, Carole Rogers, Tiffany Cunniff and Christian Carnoy; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held in  White Plains Rural Cemetery,  White Plains, N.Y., at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are under the direction of A.S. Cole Funeral Home, Cranbury, N.J.

Florence Couse

ONEONTA — Mrs. Florence Beagle Couse, 82, of Oneonta went to heaven to be with her daughter, Sylvia, and granddaughter, Amber, Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at The Meadows.

She was born Nov. 17, 1919, in Carbondale, Pa., the daughter of George and Lula Beagle.

Florence graduated from Charlotteville Central School and was the class treasurer.

She married Harry Couse in 1940 in New Jersey.

During World War II, Florence worked at the MICA Plant in Oneonta. For eight years she worked at Bendix in Sidney as an inspector and a waitress in several Oneonta restaurants for many years. She also owned and operated Flo's Taxi in Oneonta for 20 years, retiring in 1986. Florence was known for getting to know the college students and giving them rides for free.

She enjoyed sewing, baking, traveling and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Harry Couse of Oneonta; her children and their spouses, Janet and James Palmer of Maryland, Helen Altheiser of Oneonta, Doris Ryes of Florida and David and Sandy Couse of Dayton, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, Wendy Ramos, Jim Palmer, Todd, Cristy and Brad Utter, Matt, Ben and Joey Couse, Angela Page, Kenneth Reeder and Pam Tripp; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Florence was predeceased by her daughter, Sylvia Utter; and her granddaughter, Amber Couse.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Judy Thistle, chaplain at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Florence Beagle Couse.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.
