Algernon Phillips
SIDNEY — Algernon H. "John" Phillips, 85, of 9 Willow St., Sidney, passed away peacefully Monday morning, Sept. 9, 2002, at his residence.
He was born Nov. 1, 1916, in Guilford, the son of the late Harold and Lilah Cornell Phillips.
John was a lifelong area resident and for more 40 years was employed by the Amphenol Corp., Sidney.
He was a member of the I.A.M.&A.W. Local 1529, Sidney, and the Unadilla Rod and Gun Club.
He is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Virginia Giles, Unadilla, and Marjorie and James Johnson, Unadilla; one son, Thomas Phillips, Wallkill; brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Janice Phillips, Sidney; two sisters, Hazel Smith, Albany, and Florence Benjamin, state of Florida; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his best friend and loyal companion, his dog, Otis.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Shirley Ford; a brother, Olin Phillips; and a sister, Esther Franklin.
At his request services will be private at his families convenience with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, White Store.

Lloyd Baldwin
UNADILLA — Mr. Lloyd W. Baldwin of 4 Watson St., Unadilla, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.
Mr. Baldwin was born on July 28, 1921, in Binghamton, the son of George and Clara (Montanye) Baldwin.
He graduated from Unadilla High School in 1940, and then Clarkson College of Technology with a bachelor's in accounting. He also earned a master's degree from Purdue University in 1952.
Mr. Baldwin served his country overseas during World War II from 1942 to 1946.
In 1958, he married Ruth A. Nichols. They shared 44 years of marriage.
Most of his life was spent teaching. He taught at New England College, New Mexico State University and Paul Smith's College. For 18 years he was a college professor in the accounting department of the State University College of Technology at Delhi, retiring in 1985.
Mr. Baldwin also had a love for antique cars and motorcycles and enjoyed traveling.
Mr. Baldwin was a lifetime member of the American Legion Joyce Bell Post No. 578 in Unadilla, the VFW Post No. 7914 in Sidney, the Mid-York Patient Account Manager's Association and the American Accounting Association.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; his daughters, Lois M. Baldwin of Akron, Lana L. Baldwin of Cobleskill, Beth B. Baldwin of Hoboken, N.J., and Anne L. Bernier (and her husband, Ron) of Sidney, Maine; his son, Paul L. Baldwin of Unadilla; his grandchildren, Ian and Kyle Bernier; and several cousins.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at the Joyce Funeral Home Inc., 179 Main St., Unadilla.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla, with the Rev. Michael Amos of the Fellowship Baptist Church officiating.

Albert V. Whittaker
DELHI — Albert V. Whittaker, 87, of Delhi died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Delaware County Countryside Care, Delhi.
He was born June 20, 1915, in Delhi, the son of Joseph and Susan (Crampton) Whittaker.
He married the late Margaret Aitken Whittaker on Feb. 9, 1940. She predeceased him on June 15, 1999.
Mr. Whittaker ran a dairy farm and retired from the State University College of Technology at Delhi in the custodial department.
He was a longtime member of the Hamden Fish and Game Club and was a charter member of the Delhi Pistol Team.
A man who loved the out of doors, Mr. Whittaker frequently went for walks and could be found hunting, fishing and especially enjoying his gardens in the company of the beagle dogs he loved.
He is survived by three sons, Douglas and Cynthia Whittaker of East Meredith, Kenneth Whittaker of Delhi and Joseph and Janice Whittaker of DeLancey; a daughter, Katherine and Thomas Powers, Saratoga; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Mark and Lori Whittaker and Matthew and Diana, Haverstown, Pa.; Lisa and Michael Martin and Emily, Garrett, Kyle of Meridale, Laura and James Gregory and son, Tyler, Franklin, Seth Whittaker, Oneonta, Ernie and Michelle Powers, Saratoga, Albert and Stephanie Powers and Lucas and Casey, Broadalbin, Jana and John Murphy and Brendan, Matilda and Connor, Mississippi and Nathan Ives, Florida. A sister, Ethel Smith, Voorheesville; and brother, Joseph and Elaine Whittaker, Delhi; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
A grandson, Richard Powers, predeceased him.
Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at the DeLancey United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Bert More officiating.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

E. Jacqueline MacCollam
ALBANY — E. Jacqueline "Jackie" MacCollam died Aug. 20, 2002, in Albany of complications from her long struggle against Parkinson's disease.
Born on Oct. 30, 1917, in Oneonta, she was the daughter of Jessie Hughes and A. Gay Jones and sister of M. Charrie Jones, all of whom predeceased her.
She was married more than 30 years to Dr. Allan MacCollam and mother to the Rev. Joel (Jann) MacCollam and beloved grandmother to their children, Jordan and Jessica.
Jackie is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including Kevin MacCollam, Jean Bayer, Joan Krchniak, David VanEtten and Philip VanEtten.
Jackie graduated from Oneonta High School in 1934, and four years later from Oneonta State Normal School.
She taught lower grades for the Bethlehem school system in the World War II era before becoming office manager for Dr. Hugh Leahy.
She also managed her husband's fast-growing pediatric practice for several years in the 1950s.
Best known for her love of music, Jackie was one of the first woman baritone players in local marching bands and a consummate piano and organ performer who encouraged Joel in his own artistry as a classical organist.
A modest athlete, she also enjoyed many years of bowling at the University Club and golf at Schuyler Meadows Club.
Funeral services will be private, at the convenience of the family, with burial at the family plot in Oneonta.

Howard Ward Sr.
HICKORY, N.C. — Howard L. Egnor Ward Sr., 58, of Hickory, N.C., and formerly of Sidney, N.Y., passed away Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, in the Catawba Valley Memorial Center, Conover, N.C.
He was born July 1, 1944, in Guilford, N.Y., the son of the late Luke Egnor and Mary Wyman.
For many years he was a self-employed contractor.
He served his country during the Vietnam Conflict with the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Gouthremont, state of New York; four sons and daughters-in-law, Tad Ward Moore, North Tonawanda, N.Y., Howard and Becky Ward Jr., Hickory, N.C., William and Wanda Ward, Granite Falls, N.C., and Clarence Ward, Hickory, N.C.; five brothers and sister-in-law, Luke and Millie Egnor, Phoenix, Ala., Richard Ward, Sidney, N.Y., Michael Ward, Columbia, S.C., Aaron Ward, Maiden, N.C., and William Egnor, state of New York; four sisters and brother-in-law, Beatrice Kane, Unadilla, N.Y., Leah and Wayne Archer, Sidney, N.Y., Edna Helms, Binghamton, N.Y., and Jennifer Ward, state of Virginia; eight grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, N.Y., with graveside services to follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney at 3 p.m.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Busy Bea's in Unadilla, N.Y., following the graveside service.

Libby A. Simek
STAMFORD — Libby A. Simek, 87, of Stamford passed away Sept. 9, 2002, at the Robinson Terrace, Stamford, where she has been a resident since Nov. 1, 2001.
She was born on Jan. 15, 1915, in Prague, Czechoslovakia.
She married Bohuslav J. Simek in January 1947 in Prague. He died March 10, 1998.
She was a homemaker and an avid dog show enthusiast. She also enjoyed gardening and cooking.
She was born in Prague, but Libby also lived in Canada, New York City, Harrison and Poughkeepsie.
She is survived by two sons, Lada Simek, Bronx, and George Simek, Clermont, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Andrew and Stephanie.
Calling hours will be at 4 p.m. until service time at 4:30 p.m. Funeral and committal services will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.
Contributions may be made in memory of Libby Simek to Kirkside Adult Home, Main Street, Roxbury, N.Y.

Allen L. Epps Sr.
EAST MEREDITH — Mr. Allen L. Epps Sr., 87, of East Meredith died Monday evening, Sept. 9, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born Feb. 3, 1915, in the town of Davenport, the son of Arthur G. and Nellie (Allen) Epps.
He married Sylvia Austin on Oct. 4, 1941, in Franklin. Mrs. Epps predeceased him Oct. 31, 1984.
Allen was a lifelong area resident having lived on Route 23, Southside, for many years and then moving to East Meredith in 1979.
He worked as a maintenance technician at the State University College at Oneonta for 101/2 years before retiring in June 1983. Before that he worked at Dibble Tire and Gas Station on lower Main Street for 271/2 years.
Allen was a member of the West Davenport United Methodist Church. Together with his wife, Allen and Sylvia were the caretakers of the Charlotte Valley Cemetery in West Davenport for many years.
He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his five children and their spouses, Allen L. and Fran Epps Jr. of East Meredith, Earl and Lorraine Epps of Frankfort, Lauren Epps and his fiance, Rhonda Rangel of Oneonta, Sylvia Aneita Gesell of East Meredith and Andrea and Richard Hodges of Crystal River, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Margaret Epps Jr. of Milford; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Keith Palmer of Gramsville and Lena Mae and Marshall Dibble of Delhi Stage; as well as several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
Allen was predeceased by a son-in-law, Ronald Gesell; and two sisters, Ruth Wright and Claribell Epps.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at the West Davenport United Methodist Church, West Davenport, with the Rev. Kenneth Baldwin officiating.
Burial will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at which time the family will be present.

Lornie O. Lee
STAMFORD — Lornie O. Lee, 84, of Stamford, died Sept. 10, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born Nov. 2, 1917, in Cincinnatus, the son of Richard and Alice (Smith) Lee.
He married Kathleen (Martin) Lee in Ilion on Nov. 2, 1942.
Mr. Lee will be remembered as a wonderful husband, father and friend.
A machinist at Bendix in Sidney for 30 years, he also enjoyed carpentry work and trucking in association with the Searles and Lee Trucking Business and they also owned and operated the Rainbow Gardens Restaurant in Davenport.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; at home; two sons, Wayne and Judith Lee, Stamford, and Rodney and Linda Lee, Easley, S.C.; a daughter, Melinda and Walter Noble, Florida; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Baker, state of Washington, and Lena Bond of Baldwinsville; and two brothers, Glenn Lees, Greenville, and Richard Lees, Cato.
He was predeceased by five sisters, Cora Snyder, Velma White, Flora Mae Thorton, Winifred Clark and Florence Mory; and two brothers, Erving Lees and Carl Lees.
Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with the Rev. Richard Elder officiating.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.

Lillian M. Hickling
GARRATTSVILLE — Graveside memorial services and burial for Mrs. Hickling, who died Aug. 26, 2002, will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, in the Mount Vision Cemetery, Mount Vision, with the Rev. Roger Yoder officiating.
Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.
Richard M. Pegg
MORRIS — Richard Maurice Pegg, 53, of Pegg Road in Morris passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, with his loving family at his side.
He was born on Dec. 31, 1948, in Oneonta, the son of Maurice and Irma (Yates) Pegg.
He married Linda Marango on May 3, 1975, in Norwich.
Rick attended Morris Central School and lived his entire life on the Pegg Farm on Pegg Road.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1974 and was stationed in Germany for most of that time.
He helped run the Pegg Farm until 1988. He also worked for various employers over the years, including driving a school bus for Morris Central School and milk trucks for Charles Hustid, and working for the village of Morris, Gould & Bridges, Webster Paving, Otsego Express and Miller Fuel. His most recent position was a mechanic for the Scholastic Bus Corp.
Rick was a former member and past chief of the Morris Fire Department and Emergency Squad.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 1135 and a lifetime member of the Village Coffee Shop Coffee Club.
He was a devoted husband and father.
He spent many hours in the woods hunting with his sons. He enjoyed taking his daughter shopping.
He is survived by his wife, Linda, of Morris; his children, Scott Richard Pegg of Oneonta, Patrick Keith Pegg and Pamela Louise Pegg of Morris. Also surviving are his four sisters and their husbands, Joan and Lou Marango of Norwich, Linda and Ken Brown of Morris, Marcia and David Condon of Treadwell, and Susan and Rick Ray of East Meredith; his mother-in-law, Virginia Marango of Norwich; his aunts, Wanda Middlemast, Gladys Pegg and Doris Anno; his brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Roger Marango, Angelo and Joann Marango, Gary and Marilyn Marango, Mary Whaley and Ron Meyer. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and cousins and very good friends.
He was predeceased by his mother, Irma, in 1982; and his father, Maurice, in 1996.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at the Morris Baptist Church, with the Rev. Daniel Lambertson and the Rev. Lyle Linder officiating.
Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery with military honors.
