Evelyn Mae Hull
CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Evelyn Mae (Smith) Hull, 80, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.
She was born Aug. 9, 1922, in Buel, town of Canajoharie, the daughter of Raymond L. and Elsie (Porath) Smith.
On Nov. 29, 1941, she married James F. Hull in Westville. He predeceased her in 1985.
She was a lifelong area resident, graduating from Cherry Valley Central School in 1940, and Utica School of Commerce in 1941.
She worked at the Beechnut Co., Canajoharie, Clyde Bank Knitting Co. in Cherry Valley, J.J. Newberry Co., Cooperstown, and for many years was secretary to Walter F. Gilday at the Cherry Valley, Roseboom, Westford Farmers Insurance Co-op.
Mrs. Hull was a member of the Cherry Valley Presbyterian Church, the Cherry Valley Republican Club and Cherry Valley Fireman's Auxiliary (where she had held many offices). She had been the Cherry Valley town tax collector and secretary/treasurer of the Cherry Valley Joint Fire District.
She enjoyed her family and friends and always had a very open and welcoming home. Her hobbies were reading, bingo and cards. She enjoyed music and dancing.
Survivors include four daughters and three sons-in-law, Carol and Fabian Bressett of Cherry Valley, Barbara and Gene Ahl of Fernandina Beach, Fla., Linda Roof of Cherry Valley, and Gloria and George Storms of Carthage; grandchildren, Amy Bressett, Lisa and John Drake, Fabian and Karen Bressett, Elizabeth and John Brummel, Dr. Susan Ahl, Aaron Moyer, Michelle and Frank Ponte, Scott and Stephanie Storms, Mike and Shannon Storms; nine great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, John E. Hull; sister-in-law, Grace Thompson; aunt, Charlotte Flint; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, a son, James R. Hull, and brother, Richard Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, in the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson, pastor, officiating.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at the funeral Home.
Burial will follow in the South Valley-Pleasant Brook Cemetery, South Valley.
The family wishes to express their thanks to all of the staff at The Meadows for their excellent care, and also to the Hospice staff.
Contributions in Mrs. Hull's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Fireman's Auxiliary.

Henry Dunning Jr.
SPRINGFIELD — Mr. Henry L. Dunning Jr., 77, of Springfield passed away Sept. 1, 2002, in the Albany Veterans Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 6, 1924, in Elizabeth, N.J., the son of Henry L. and Lillian E. (Lindquist) Dunning.
On March 6, 1948, he married Phyllis Ruth Bolinder in the First Baptist Church, Hackensack, N.J.; she survives.
He was a graduate of Teaneck, N.J., High School Class of 1942. He served as a staff-sergeant, with the 550th Bomb Squadron, 385 Bomb Group in the Army Air Corps from 1943-1945. He was shot down over Berlin in a B17, and he spent 13 months in Stalag 17 as a prisoner of war at age 19.
He graduated from Cobleskill Agriculture College in 1952. He was a Reg. Holstein Dairy Farmer in East Springfield for 25 years. From 1956-1996 (40 years) he was a part-time seed salesman and assisted the district sales manager for Pioneer Hi-Bred Seeds.
He was a member of the Holstein Association of America, former member of Springfield Fire Department (40 plus years), V.F.W. Post, Cooperstown, a 52-year member of Wm. L. Daniels Lodge 269 F.&A.M. of Bergenfield, N.J., a member of Otsego County Farm Bureau, and the American Ex-POW of Northeastern and other community groups.
Besides his wife of 54 years, Phyllis Dunning, of Springfield, survivors include a son, James Carson Dunning of San Francisco, Calif.; a daughter, Patricia Ruth Boomhaower and her husband, Lawrence, and their twins girls, Marie and Lynn, of South Bethlehem.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, in the Presbyterian Church, Route 20, East Springfield, with the Rev. Susan Birdsall, pastor, officiating.
Burial will take place in the Saratoga National Cemetery at a later date.
There will be no public calling hours.

Iva Spence
ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — Iva Belle "Betty" Spence, 93, Ormond Beach, Fla., died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at The Manor on The Green.
Mrs. Spence was born Sept. 24, 1908, in Bainbridge, N.Y. She and her husband, John Spence, moved from Oneonta, N.Y., to Ormond Beach in 1973.
Mr. and Mrs. Spence owned and operated Arethusa Sorority at the State University College at Oneonta.
Mrs. Spence was an accomplished cook and seamstress, and was devoted to her family.
She was a member of Elm Park Methodist Church in Oneonta for many years. She later was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ormond Beach, where she made hundreds of quilts for the needy.
Mrs. Spence is survived by three sons, William, and twins, Donald L. and Douglas J., all of Ormond Beach, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three daughters-in-law, Helen, Margaret and Marlene; and hundreds of Arethusa daughters.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Spence.
Chapel service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, Ormond Beach.
Visitation was held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Volusia Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Jeffery Spence, Don Spence, John D. Spence, Jack Spence, Michael Spence, Douglas Spence, Steven Spence, William Spence and James Spence.

Susan Herring
STAMFORD — Susan Peterson Herring died on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, N.C.
She was born on Nov. 13, 1957, in Palo Alto, Calif.
She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Stephen Herring; and her son, Peter A. Herring, of Conetoe, N.C.; her parents, Donald W. and Betty Ann (Leitch) Peterson of Albuquerque; and her parents-in-law, Jean and Philip Becker of Washington, N.C.
Sue is also survived by sisters and brothers-in-law, Karen Frankfather Peterson and Dwight Frankfather of Chicago, Kristie Peterson and Greg Ingwaldson of Albuquerque, and David W. Herring and Patricia Frazier Herring of Minneapolis. Her nieces and nephews are Arwen Wilder of Minneapolis, Vidrik Frankfather of Boston, and Julia and Derek Ingwaldson, both of Albuquerque. One more niece, Julia Herring of Minneapolis, is on her way.
Sue spent her teen-age years on the big island of Hawaii.
She received her bachelor's degree, cum laude, from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1980, and her master's of science from Washington State University in 1988.
She married Stephen Herring on May 23, 1981, in Vancouver, Wash.
Her most recent employment was with the School Library System of Otsego-Northern Catskills BOCES in Stamford. She also assisted her husband in his pastoral work in three different parishes.
She was a licensed wildlife rehabilitator who will be remembered for her love of nature and her knowledge of birds.
She loved to sing, and she graced the choirs of several churches. She received her black belt in Karate in 1999 at the Mountain Martial Arts Studio in Stamford. She also studied Tai Chi and Chi-Gung, and she was a Master Reiki practitioner.
While her time on earth was short, she touched the lives of everyone she met in many ways.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, 96 Main St., Stamford, NY 12167.
Local arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.
Eveline Chambers
ONEONTA — Eveline Chambers, 76, of Oneonta, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at the O'Connor Hospital in Delhi.
She was born on Nov. 6, 1925, in Oneonta, the daughter of Ernest and Saloma (Prindle) Carson.
She was married to LeRoy Chambers, who passed away on April 8, 2001.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Ann Barker, of Forest Park, Ga.; a very loving niece and her husband, Edna Ann and Larry Brandenburg of Oneonta; and other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her mother and father, she was predeceased by three sisters, Edna O'Donnell, Mildred Evans and Elsie Renwick Mead.
Funeral and committal services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
Timothy L. Gray
WALTON — Timothy L. Gray, age 44, of Walton, died Wednesday evening, Sept. 4, 2002, in the Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton, after a long illness.
Tim was born in Walton, the son of LeRoy B. and Dolores R. Hood Gray, on May 28, 1958.
He was a cluge operator, employed by At-A-Glance, Sidney, retiring in 1995 because of illness.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Walton.
He had a great love of children and animals. He tutored math and was a member of the chess club while living in Greencastle, Pa.
After moving back to Walton at age 17, Tim graduated from Walton Central School in 1976, and then attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa.
He will be remembered for his great sense of humor.
He is survived by his parents, LeRoy and Dolores Gray, of Walton; two sisters, Terry Helfrick and her husband, Doyle, of Waynesboro, Pa., and Tracey and her husband, Stanley, Budine of Hobart; his aunt and uncle, Dorothy and Mitch Elmore of Walton; two nieces, Amanda Hahn and Leslie Helfrick, both of Waynesboro, Pa.; and two nephews, Kyle Budine and Jesse Budine, both of Hobart.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Clark & Winter Funeral Service Inc., 25 Townsend St., Walton, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, with the Rev. Allen A. Bujno, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Walton, officiating.
Interment will be in the Walton Cemetery, Walton.

Vivian K. O'Donnell
ONEONTA — Vivian K. O'Donnell, 82, formerly of Oneonta, passed away in her sleep of natural causes at her residence in Raleigh, N.C., on Sept. 2, 2002.
Vivian was the daughter of Clarence and Mary Kelly of Oneonta.
Vivian grew up in Oneonta and was a 1939 graduate of Oneonta High School.
She married Francis X. O'Donnell, also of Oneonta, in 1946. The couple had one son. Her husband passed away in 1968. Vivian was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed reading and cooking.
She is survived by her son, Francis, and daughter-in-law, Dee Jones O'Donnell, of Aiken, S.C. She is survived by three sisters and one brother, Alpha Riddell and Doris Vaughan of Oneonta, Marie Ames of Elmira, and Salvan "Sonny" Kelly of Oneonta. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
A celebration of Vivian's life will be held and the family will receive friends at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home at 14 Grand St. in Oneonta from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002.
A private family remembrance will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Donald Latimer
KELSO, Tenn. — Funeral services for Mr. Donald Latimer, age 49, of 25 Ben Thompson Road, Kelso, Tenn., will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Higgins Funeral Home with a funeral military service.
Burial will follow in the Prospect Cemetery.
Mr. Latimer died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville.
He was the son of Donald and Mary Jones Latimer Sr. of Fayetteville.
Mr. Latimer retired from the U.S. Army after serving more than 20 years, and was formerly employed by Doris Lee Draperies in Huntsville, Ala.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Dianna Sue McBay Latimer, of Kelso; son, Donald J. Latimer III of Virginia; stepdaughter, Leah Smith of Kelso; stepson, Andy Baumgardt of Shelbyville; brother, Cecil Baker of Oneonta, N.Y.; two sisters, Mary Lois Bjork of Colorado, and Nancy Cobb of Columbia; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be Saturday from noon until time of service at 2 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home.
Dawson Hoagland
NEW BERLIN — Dawson Christopher Lee Hoagland of New Berlin died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, in Norwich.
He was born June 29, 2002, in Cooperstown, son of Jason and Kasey (Brownell) Hoagland.
He is survived by his parents and brother, Dalton Jason Hoagland, of New Berlin; grandparents; great-grandparents; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be Monday, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin with Pastor Gary Folz officiating.
Calling hours are Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
He was greatly loved and will be missed.
Norman F. Mayo
SIDNEY CENTER — Norman F. Mayo, 78, of Sidney Center passed away Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.
He was born June 24, 1924, son of the late Fred and Edna (Sawdy) Mayo in Cannonsville, N.Y.
Norman married Helen Walley. They lived and farmed in Cannonsville-Rock Royal for 40 years before the development of the reservoir. They moved to Sidney Center where they owned and operated the family farm until Norman retired. After retirement, he worked for the Sidney Central School for 10 years.
Norman was also a member of the Sidney Center United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Helen Mayo, of Sidney Center; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Terry Parsons, of Sidney Center; a son, Gary Mayo, of Masonville; son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Colleen Mayo, of Otego; grandchildren, Todd Parsons of Sidney Center, Chad Parsons of California, Jodie and Brad Gregory of Masonvil1e, Kerry Parsons, Plattsburgh, Michelle and Andrew Searles of Masonville, Lori Mayo of Sidney, Jasmine Mayo of Unadilla, Nicholas Mayo of Sidney Center, Shannon Mayo of Brigham City, Utah, Jordin Mayo of Otego; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Valerie Daugherty of Marathon, Edna Walley of Walton, Lillian and Morris Hornbeck of Sidney Center, Lois Phoenix of Walton; brother and sister-in-law, Clinton and Martha Mayo, of Sidney Center; brother-in-law and his wife, Ford and Veda Walley, of Afton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by an infant son, Rodney.
Graveside services will be held Monday, Sept. 9, at Hale Eddy Cemetery in Hale Eddy at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Kip Stratton of the Sidney Center United Methodist Church officiating.
Friends may call Sunday. The family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Center Emergency Squad or the Sidney Center United Methodist Church.

Francis J. Sherwood
DENVER — Francis J. Sherwood, 78, of Denver, N.Y., died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 24, 1923, in Vega, N.Y., son of Floyd V. and Ora A. (Ballard) Sherwood.
He married Betty J. Hull on July 4, 1948, in Margaretville, N.Y.
Francis was an avid hunter and especially enjoyed hunting snowshoe rabbits with his brother-in-law Charles Scully and their beagles.
A 1943 graduate of Roxbury Central School, he was a dairy farmer, milk and sawdust hauler, operated a store in Vega with his wife, Betty, worked for Delaware County Highway Department and retired from Roxbury Central School in 1991.
He was a former councilman for the Town of Roxbury, enjoyed bowling, following high school sports, dancing and his horses.
He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Sherwood, of Denver; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Mary Sherwood, of Stamford; brother and sister-in-law, Julian and Patricia Sherwood, of Denver; aunt and uncle, William and Ruth Ballard, of North Bay; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Vicki Sherwood, who died Nov. 21, 2001.
Funeral services will be Sunday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury with the Rev. Charles Gockel.
Burial will be in Vega Cemetery in Denver.
Calling hours are Saturday, Sept. 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Contributions in memory of Francis may be made to the Vega Cemetery Association or to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.
