Evelyn Monroe
DELHI — Evelyn L. R. Monroe, 98, former longtime Delhi resident, passed away peacefully on Tuesday night, Aug. 13, 2002, in Coronado, Calif.
The daughter of Alvah D. and Lucy W. (Bull) Rowell, she was born March 22, 1904, in Walton, was a graduate of Delaware Academy (1922) and Syracuse University (1926), and married James W. Monroe on Aug. 22, 1928, in Delhi. "Jim" died Aug. 9, 1973.
A homemaker most of her life, Evelyn taught school before her marriage. She loved the learning environment, and was a substitute teacher in English, history and social studies at Delaware Academy.
Throughout her life, she valued relationships and constantly organized events that brought people together. She possessed an unusual acceptance, interest and understanding of different racial and cultural backgrounds, and for many years housed foreign students who attended the Delhi college. Until the end, letters and greetings came from former students now living in Africa, Asia and Europe.
Faith was a deeply ingrained part of her loving personality. A faithful servant, she held many official offices in the Delhi Methodist Church and taught a fourth-grade Sunday school class for more than 30 years. When the United Ministry of Delhi was formed, bringing together a Presbyterian and Methodist congregation, she was a leader with a vision to better serve her community.
She thought it a sin to drive to a church event alone and would always call friends who might need a ride. She took a special interest in handicapped residents of a group home in Delhi, and saw that a church membership class was available to them. Today they are a regular part of the life of the United Ministry.
Her camera was a constant companion, and she will be remembered for the numerous photos she took of people in the church and community, which she chronicled in her yearly albums, now a living history of Delhi.
Evelyn was especially pleased that her childhood days were recorded in the book, "Fragments of Yesterday," that was written by local authors Anne McCall and Mary Jane Henderson.
In 1990, she was surprised and deeply honored when she was named "Woman of the Year" by the Delhi Business and Professional Women's Association.
When her health declined, she moved to Coronado, Calif., in December 1997, to reside near her son.
Surviving are two sons, Philip A. Monroe of Coronado, Calif., and J. Lawrence Monroe of Northridge, Calif.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to call on Friday evening, Sept. 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home in Delhi when the family will be in attendance.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at the United Ministry, with the Rev. Lisa Heckman officiating. Burial will follow at the Walton Cemetery.
