Anthony Paulaitis
DELHI — Anthony "Tony" V. Paulaitis, 78, of Delhi passed away Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, in Delhi.
He was born Feb. 22, 1924, in Carnarsie, Brooklyn, the son of Tony and Anna (Markuza) Paulaitis.
An aviation mechanic in the Navy during World War II, Tony was stationed on the WASP aircraft carrier in the Pacific Ocean.
He married Anne Henry on Nov. 26, 1946. She predeceased him on March 7, 1980.
A lover of nature, hunting and fishing, Tony was a member of the Delhi Pistol Club, the Delhi Grange and the Ancient City RC Flyers in St. Augustine, Fla.
A loving husband, patient father, supportive son, loyal friend and, devoted companion — Tony, we will miss you.
He is survived by a son, Thomas Victor (Lynn) Paulaitis of St. Augustine, Fla., a son, Michael Victor Paulaitis of Hartford, Conn., and a daughter, Suzanne (John) Regan of Tuscon, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Stacey Lynn (Steven) Vaugh, Stephanie Marie (Thad) Layton, Paul Johnalister Regan and Scott Joseph Regan; two great-grandchildren, Jeffery Vaugh and Mackenzie Earl Vaugh; one sister, Alyce Tangerini; one nephew, Chet Tangerini; and a beloved life companion, Doris Evangeline Ramp.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
Burial will be at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Carole A. Shockley
WHITESBORO — Carole Ann (Rake) Shockley, 63, of Whitesboro, formerly of Otego, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at her home.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at the J.W. Dimbleby Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Whitesboro.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church in Whitesboro.

Nicole Prescott
LAURENS — Nicole Prescott, 18, attained peace Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, after a lengthy battle with Osteosarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer.
Nicole graduated from Laurens Central School in June, was accepted at Boston University and was to attend the State University at Albany in the fall. She was undecided on a major but wanted to "help people and give something back" to the community that supported her during her battle.
Prior to her illness Nicole was a very talented forward as co-captain of the varsity soccer team. She never lost her love for soccer. She was also a very determined point guard in varsity basketball and a fast little sprinter on the varsity track team.
Nicole was blessed with a gift for music as an accomplished trumpet and French horn player.
She was very active in school and community activities. It was through this that Nicole met and touched so many hearts. She had a sweet soul and a sweeter smile.
Nicole was a member of Mount Vision United Methodist Church.
Nicole is survived and deeply loved by her parents, Brian and Anne; her loving brothers, Devin and Jon and his soulmate Coryn of Virginia; her grandparents, Madeline and Charles Prescott; several relatives; her dog, Luke; and many friends.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta. Please bring memories to share in our memory book. Festive and Hawaiian attire is requested for services.
Funeral services at the funeral home will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, with the Rev. Roger G. Yoder, pastor of the Mount Vision United Methodist Church, officiating. Anyone is welcome to speak and share their thoughts, feelings and memories.
Committal service immediately following at the Elm Row Cemetery in Laurens.

Margaret Nichols
WALTON — Mrs. Margaret D. Nichols, 99, a longtime Walton resident, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, during a brief stay at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.
She was born May 17, 1903, on a Tunis Lake farm in Andes, to Robert and Isabel Doig.
In 1933, she married Jess Nichols. He passed away in 1946.
Mrs. Nichols, known as Peg to her many friends, was a graduate of Delhi High School, taught briefly at a rural school, then attended Oneonta State Teachers College, where she received her degree.
In 1927, she came to Walton, where she taught 44 years, retiring in 1972. She taught at both Miller Avenue and Townsend Schools, fourth and then fifth grade.
Peg was committed to her family, church and community. She was genuinely interested in events and projects that would benefit the people of Walton such as the hospital carnival or floats that opened the Walton Fair.
She was a booster of the Walton High wrestling team from its beginning, and until recently baked cookies for anyone who might need a little lift.
She is survived by her stepdaughter, Jane Griffin; grandsons, John, Frank, Paul and James Griffin; and nine great-grandchildren; her sister, Mary Haviland of Ames, Iowa, and in Walton, her brother, Dr. Robert Doig; her nephews, Richard and Lyndon Doig of Walton; a niece, Cheryl Saudy of Sidney Center. There are other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews with whom she thoroughly enjoyed keeping in touch.
Her brother, Wilbur Doig of Delhi; and her nephew, Robert Doig of Walton, predeceased her.
A service will be held at the United Presbyterian Church in Walton at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, with the Rev. James Martin officiating. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at the Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, 102 Delaware St., Walton.
Memorial contributions in her name may be made to United Presbyterian Church, Walton, to either the Christian Education Fund or the Kitchen Renovation Fund.
Norman J. Keator
LAURENS — Norman J. Keator, 79, of Laurens and New Berlin died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, in Laurens.
He was born Feb. 28, 1923, in Gilboa, the son of Alonzo and Ethel Pearl (Winnie) Keator.
He was married to Alice May Schermerhorn on Dec. 8, 1946, in Oneonta. She died Aug. 21, 1986.
He was employed by Reinhardts of West Oneonta, as a truck driver, for over 35 years.
He had resided in Laurens for 30 years and in New Berlin at his son, Don's home for 15 years.
He served his country in the United States Army during World War II, in the Pacific theater of operations.
He is survived by his children, Donald Keator and his wife, Shirl, Noreen Devine and her husband, Nick, Joseph Keator and his wife, Melanie; a brother, Angevine (Chub) Keator; eight grandchildren, Christy Houck and her husband, Terry, Mandy Keator, Amy Devine, Donnie Keator, Ryan Devine, Joey Keator and his companion, Jody Webster, Adam Keator and Chelsea Keator. He is also survived by his stepgrandchildren, John Mitchell and Paulina Oaks; and his great-grandchildren, Morgan Crippen, Skye Houck, Terissa Houck; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Laura (Keator) Knapp; and brothers, Ben Keator, Alonzo (June) Keator, Lorne Keator, Edward Keator and John Keator.
There will be no calling hours.
Graveside memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at the Cooks Cemetery in West Oneonta, with military honors.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service, at the home of Nick and Noreen Devine, Route No. 205, Mount Vision.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Mount Vision Fire Department, Mount Vision, N.Y. or the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY, in Norman's memory.
Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
Anthony J. Salemo
BAINBRIDGE — Anthony J. Salemo — beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather — passed away Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.
He was born May 6, 1923, son of the late Louis and Philomena Salemo in Suffern.
Anthony served his country during World War II in the United States Army.
He married Delta Vance on July 1, 1950, in Suffern. She predeceased him on Dec. 11, 1997. Anthony and Delta owned and operated Del's Delicatessen in Ramsey, N.J. for many years prior to moving to Bainbridge. After moving, he was employed as a machinist for Amphenol Corp. in Sidney, when he retired in 1985.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Ira and Leslie Salemo, Caryville, Tenn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judith and Peter Baciuska, Afton, and Holly and Arthur Baciuska, Afton. "Pop-Pop" is also survived by six special grandchildren, Jason and Lindsay Baciuska, Norwich, Justin and Francis Baciuska, Harpursville, Karen and Michael Rought, Mooresville, N.C., Arthur Baciusk, Afton, Delta Salemo, Massachusetts and Ira Salemo Jr., Massachusetts; four very special great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Jonathan, Mikey and Ryan. He is also survived by his dear friend, Randy Bolster, Afton; two brothers, James (Ellen) Salemo and Joseph Salemo of Suffern; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
"You are our strength, 'Pop-Pop' and we will love you and miss you forever."
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002.
Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Afton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Leslie W. Edwards
COOPERSTOWN — Leslie Wilbur Edwards, 84, of Cooperstown passed away Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, in the town of Middlefield at The Meadows.
He was born Jan. 7, 1918, in New Berlin, the son of Wilbur and Lenora (Stockwell) Edwards.
He married Gladys Mae Boise Chase on Dec. 2, 1967. She survives.
He spent his childhood in the New Berlin area, and graduated from the New Berlin Central School.
He is survived by six stepchildren and spouses, Mary and William Burr, Cooperstown, Gladys and George Hunt, Fly Creek, Frederick and Diane Chase, Hessville, Edward Chase, Sidney, Donald and Christine Chase, Salt Springville and Ronald Chase, Mount Upton; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Inda Edwards, Burlington.
He was predeceased by one brother, Ralph Edwards; and by one sister, Marion Rowe.
He was a herdsman for Lewis Reed Farm in South Edmeston and a houseman for the Otesaga in Cooperstown from 1961 until his retirement in 1985.
He attended Toddsville Baptist Church.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at the Dakin Funeral Home.

Mary A. Ballard
DENVER — Mary A. Ballard, 82, of Denver passed away Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.
She was born May 2, 1920, in Palentown, the daughter of Joseph Lennon and Clara Barringer.
She married Ivan George Ballard on Aug. 25, 1937, in Clovesville. He passed away Nov. 16, 1990.
She was a housewife and sold Avon Products for 37 years. A lifelong area resident, she was a member of the United Methodist Church, Halcottsville. She had a strong religious faith and listened to religious programs on TV and the radio.
Mary liked to cook and bake, and loved her grandchildren. She also enjoyed flowers.
Mary is survived by three daughters, Ethel Linda (Norman) Marcus, Evelyn Kay (David) Van De Bogart and Eva M. (Robert) Sanford; one son, Ernest (Lori) Ballard; grandchildren, Rose Santiago, Shirley Einhorn, Trudy Sainsbury, Teresa Green, Jeffrey Marcus, Debra Marcus, Robyn M. Sanford, Tracy Renee Sanford and Garrett S. Ballard; 10 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ivan; and two daughters, Esther Mary Santiago, died May 13, 1985, Eleanor Rose Ballard, died Dec. 25, 1962.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at the United Methodist Church, Roxbury, with the Rev. Robert Engelhardt officiating.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
Burial will be in Vega Cemetery, Denver.
Contributions may be made in memory of Mary Ballard to the Roxbury Ambulance Fund or to the United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, Roxbury.

David H. Baldwin
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — David "Deyo" H. Baldwin died on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, in Los Angeles, Calif., from complications brought about by AIDS. He was 46.
David was raised in Waltham, Mass., and Oneonta, N.Y. He graduated from the Loomis School and Bard College with a bachelor's degree in filmmaking. After moving to Los Angeles, however, he became a painter, creating up to his death, canvases that reflected themes he loved: his childhood summer home by the ocean, the boulevards of Venice Beach, Calif., surfing, old cars, friends and family.
During the last three years of his life, Deyo taught art to at-risk teen-agers at North Hills Prep in North Hills, Calif., a job he truly loved. His natural ability to connect and empathize with children made him a beloved teacher and respected colleague.
He is survived by his father, David B. Baldwin of Oneonta, N.Y.; brother, Ben Baldwin, and wife, Elizabeth Doucette, of Portsmouth, N.H.; sister, Anita Baldwin, and Rick McAulay of Los Altos Hills, Calif., sister, Elizabeth Baldwin of Rochester, N.H., his long-time friend, Laura Fujita of Los Angeles, Calif., and six nephews.
Services will be held in Venice Beach and in Kittery Point, Maine, in October.
Local arrangements were by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home of Oneonta.
Leonard J. Adair
STAMFORD — Leonard J. Adair, 83, of Stamford, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.
He was born on Dec. 1, 1918, in Davenport, the son of William K. and Lena (McLaury) Adair.
He was a graduate of Muskingun College in New Concord, Ohio, and served in the Amy during World War II. Following his military service, he taught English at Stamford Central School for 20 years, retiring in 1976.
In 1957, he married Virginia Dales, who survives.
Leonard was an elder and clerk of the session at the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford for several years. He served on the Stamford Library Board, the North Kortright Cemetery Association, was a former councilman for the town of Harpersfield and was a member of the Colonel Harper Grange.
Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Joanne of Stamford; a son, Jim of Windham, and two stepsisters, Janet Peterson of Massena and Audrey Sherman of Barneveld.
Memorial services will be held Monday, Aug. 19, at the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Adrian McFarlane officiating.
Calling hours will be Sunday, Aug. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart.
Burial will be in North Kortright Cemetery in North Kortright.
Contributions in Leonard's memory may be made to the Stamford First Presbyterian Church or the Stamford Emergency Squad.
