Frances Fritz
ONEONTA — Mrs. Frances Fritz, 86, of Oneonta died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at the Kingsway Arms Nursing Home, Schenectady, where she had resided since 1999.
She was born April 11, 1916, in Oneonta, the daughter of Frank and Grace (Westcott) Lorraine.
A lifelong area resident, Frances graduated from Oneonta High School, Class of 1935.
She married Ernest "Ernie" Fritz on April 8, 1944, in Oneonta. Mr. Fritz predeceased her on Feb. 14, 1974.
She was employed at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital for 431/2 years in the X-ray department as an X-ray technician and also an X-ray supervisor, retiring in April 1978.
Frances enjoyed bowling. She has been a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1933, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women of the Church, Rebekah Circle, a former member of the choir and also a Sunday school teacher. She was also a former member of the volunteers at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital; the Red Cross Mobile Blood Bank in various locations in the city of Oneonta.
She is survived by her children, Ernest E. and Elizabeth M. "Libbo" Fritz of Richmond, Va., Richard A. and Beth Fritz of Salisbury, N.C., and Judith Saltsman of Rotterdam Junction; her grandchildren, Kimberly and Mike Chapleski, Jason and Kim Fritz, Ernest Richard Fritz, Nicole and Jurgen Kohler, Melissa and Sean Kopasz, Jennifer Fritz, Carlie Saltsman, and Jennifer and Alan Boyce; her great-grandchildren, Joshua Hammond, Ryan Chepleski, Morgan and Logan Fritz, Jurgen, Madison and Savanna Kuhler, Brandon Kopasz, Jordan Fritz, Hadley Boyce; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Frances was predeceased by her daughter, Joanne Fritz; one brother and one sister.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Richard Breuninger officiating. Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.
It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to Community Hospice Schenectady, 1411 Union Street, Schenectady, NY 12308 in loving memory of Frances Fritz.

Mianda Morris
MOUNT UPTON — Mianda "Tillie" Morris, 79, of River Road in Mount Upton died peacefully, Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at her home.
She was born on Feb. 11, 1923, in Hartwick, the daughter of the late Percy and Cora (Harrison) Wilson.
On Dec. 24, 1944, in Leonardsville, she married James Morris, who survives.
Besides her husband, James of Mount Upton, she is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, John and Deb Morris of Gilbertsville and James Morris of Gilbertsville; her sister, Marjorie DeGrigorio of Hedgesville, W.Va.; and her grandchildren, Jason Morris, Joshua and Jennifer Morris, Faith Morris, Jesse and Tammy Boldt, Ashley Hoke, Sarah Hoke, Trevor Hoke, Robert Morris and Charlie Morris.
She was a graduate of Leonardsville High School and Kingston Secretarial School.
She had worked for Preferred Mutual Insurance Co. in New Berlin and was a secretary at the Mount Upton Central School for 12 years. She helped her husband in the operation of the family farm for many years.
She also served as an assessor for the town of Butternuts and then for the town of Oneonta. She was the secretary of the Rolling Antiquers Old Car Club.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, from the Gilbertsville Baptist Church, Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Randolph Palada, pastor officiating. Burial will be in Morris Chapel Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Richard E. Ross
VESTAL — Richard E. Ross, 95, of Vestal, formerly of Sidney Center, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at the TLC Home in Greene.
He was born on Sept. 14, 1906, in Grooveville, the son of the late Frank and Julia (Cobb) Ross.
On Feb. 11, 1930, in Walton, he married Verna Heinmen. She died on May 8, 1999.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Lee Ross of Bainbridge, Lawrence and Carolyn Ross of Vestal, and Allen and Kathryn Ross of Sidney Center: his brother and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Louise Ross of Franklin, and Dorothy Ross of Coventry; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his son, Louis Ross; his brother, Kingsley Ross; and his sister, Verna Ross.
He retired from the Electrical Components Division of Bendix in Sidney in 1971 after 29 years of service.
He was the founder of Ross' Floor Sanding & Refinishing in Sidney Center.
He and his wife enjoyed their winters in Webster, Fla., for 20 years.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Inc., Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with Donald Bixby officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. at the C.H. Landers Inc., Funeral Chapel Friday, Aug. 9.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chenango County or the Sidney Center Fire Department.
Victor J. Orrico
AFTON — Victor J. Orrico of Afton died Aug. 7, 2002, at his residence.
He was born in Jersey City, N.J., on Oct. 24, 1952, the son of Victor and Elizabeth (Doyle) Orrico.
He was a veteran of the Army, serving during the Vietnam War.
He was a retired employee of the Port Authority of New York-New Jersey.
He was a member of the Sidney Post No. 183 of the American Legion, Sidney Elks, Sidney VFW and the Sidney Knights of Columbus Lodge No. 4937. He was also a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Bainbridge.
He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth (Doyle) Orrico, of the town of Afton; and uncle, Father Cesar Orrico of New Jersey; and cousins, Marilynn and Francis Studer of Poughkeepsie; and several other cousins.
The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at the Dorothy Memorial Home, 121 Main St., Afton. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Dorothy Memorial Home in Afton, with Father Donald Bourgeois of St. John's Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in Masonville Cemetery in Bainbridge.

Mary Brightman
KNOXVILLE, Md. — Mary Etta Brightman, 79, of 19431 Garretts Mill Road, Knoxville, Md., died on Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at her home. She had suffered a stroke on Oct. 3, 2001.
Born July 17, 1922, in North Port, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Ed and Mary Elizabeth Willard Turner.
Mary Etta was the owner and operator of "The Laughing Gull" in Easton, Md., and the creator of "Old World Santas," purchased by collectors nationwide. She was active in the Talbot Iris Society, winning numerous ribbons for showing her collection of iris.
Mary Etta was a volunteer with the Samaritan House in Denton, Md.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Donald F. Brightman; one daughter, Donna Brightman Hirsh of Brownsville, Md.; one son, Thomas M. Brightman of Sykesville, Md.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mary Etta was preceded in death by one son, Ronald E. Brightman; and one sister, Janetta Turner Swift.
Internment will be at the Laurens Cemetery in Laurens, with graveside services to he held at 11 a.m. Aug. 24, 2002.

Maria A. Schmitz
STAMFORD — Maria A. Schmitz, 88, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, in South Kortright.
She was born in Frankfurt, Germany.
Mrs. Schmitz lived in Jefferson and Flushing, Queens, before returning to Stamford more than 30 years ago.
Surviving are her children — Teresa, Linda, Joseph and Eugene — and six grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.
Raymond E. Williams
BAINBRIDGE — Raymond Edward Williams, 80, of Bainbridge, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.
Raymond led a full and loving life with his family and friends, and he is now at peace. He was much loved and will be sadly missed.
He was born Feb. 17, 1922, in Bennettsville, the son of Henry and Kittie (Shepard) Williams.
Raymond was a life-long area resident, former dairy farmer, quarryman, operated a gun shop in Sidney and for 25 years was employed as lumber yard manager for J. W. VanCott & Son Inc., of Unadilla and Sidney. He was also an avid hunter.
He is survived by his wife, Mary (Santic) Williams; four sons, Don Williams, Dale Williams, Doug Williams and Raymond Williams Jr.; two daughters, Debby Burrell and Viola Fromm; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Mickey, who will miss him very much.
He was predeceased by his two brothers and three sisters.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12, in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla, with the Rev. Allen L. Presby, pastor of the East Guilford Presbyterian Church, officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
A luncheon will be held immediately following the service for family and friends at the East Guilford Presbyterian Church.

Carlton J. Southern
ONEONTA — Carlton J. Southern, 88, of Oneonta, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at his residence following a short illness.
He was born April 12, 1914, in Brookfield, to Herbert and Therel (Pope) Southern and married Kay Harrington on June 25, 1950, in Great Bend, Pa. Mrs. Southern died July 22, 2001.
Carlton was employed as a Railway Express agent in Oneonta and was a former employee of the D&H Railroad, retiring in 1976.
He was also employed as a self-taught home builder having built 10 houses locally. Mr. Southern was also an accomplished artist, specializing in pencil sketching.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta.
He is survived by three sons, Brian and Eileen Southern of Binghamton, David and Mary Southern of Otego and Robert and Mary Southern of Oneonta; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Southern of Orlando, Fla., and James Southern of Binghamton, and a sister, Joan Roe of Oneonta, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, at 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. Edward Carlton, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta, officiating.
Burial will follow in Plains Cemetery in Oneonta.
The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
Ellen H. Mowbray
MARGARETVILLE — Ellen H. Mowbray, 71, of Margaretville, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 20, 1931, in the Bronx, to Emil Camill Hackl and Hertha Hilda Hlawitchka.
Ellen married Bruce Mowbray Sr. on Sept. 30, 1952, in Bay Shore.
She was a graduate of Islip High School and worked as a receptionist/bookkeeper for Bay Shore Animal Hospital.
She had been a resident of Margaretville for 10 years moving from Bay Shore
A member of Saint James Episcopal Church of Lake Delaware, Ellen loved her cats and enjoyed gardening.
She is survived by her husband, Bruce Mowbray Sr., of Margaretville; a son, Bruce Mowbray Jr.; two daughters, Lisa Ahmad and Laura Mihlstin; three grandchildren, Rachel, Ethan and Parker and four sisters, Hertha, Hedy, Emmy and Erika.
A Requiem Funeral Mass will be recited at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12, at St. James Episcopal Church in Lake Delaware with the Rev. Jason Catania as celebrant.
Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery Annex in Margaretille.
There will be no calling hours.
In memory of Ellen H. Mowbray, contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of St. James Episcopal Church in Lake Delaware.

George A. Purcell
DELHI — George A. Purcell, 71, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at Countryside Care Center in Delhi.
He was born June 30, 1931, in Hamden, son of Bryan C. Purcell and Hazel Campbell.
George was a veteran of the Korean War serving from May 22, 1952 to May 21, 1954.
Self-employed at Purcell Hardware in Hancock from 1950 to 1988, he also worked as a home health aide from 1990 to 1996 for LARC of Sidney Inc.
A resident of Countryside Care Center since Jan. 7, 1998, he is survived by cousins.
Funeral services for George A. Russell will be Monday, Aug. 12, at 2:30 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating.
Burial will be in Margaretville Cemetery.
Calling hours are Monday at Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville from 1:30 p.m. until service time.

George E. Nader
ONEONTA — George E. Nader, 56, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly on Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
He was born July 10, 1946, in Oneonta, the son of Nausif and Sadie (Moffett) Nader.
George was a heavy equipment operator for the city of Oneonta, where he worked for the past 28 years.
An avid golfer, he was a member of the Oneonta Country Club. He also was a member of St. Mary's Church in Oneonta and the CSEA.
George was a true sports enthusiast. He was a volunteer referee for Rotary Basketball at the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club. He was a New York Giants fan, and for many years he held season tickets. He was a great supporter of baseball, especially the Oneonta Yankees and the Oneonta Tigers, along with high school and collegiate athletics.
George was a devoted son and a caring neighbor. He will be missed by his family, friends and co-workers.
He is survived by his mother, Sadie Nader of Oneonta; two uncles, Albert S. Nader of Oneonta and George Moffett of Akron, Ohio; two aunts, Julia Church of Oneonta and Jemele Mitrano of New York City; two dear friends, Tom Cartwright of Akron, Ohio, and Bonnie Hellinger of Oneonta; as well as many cousins.
He was predeceased by his father, Nausif Nader in 1968; and a sister, Jean Nader in 1972.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, in St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., in Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.
Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club.
