Florence Eaton
ONEONTA Florence Tyler Eaton died Aug. 3, 2002, at Fox Nursing Home.
She was born July 22, 1918, in Kingsley, Pa., the daughter of Sarah Sprague Tyler and Fred Tyler.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Sherburne Eaton; and her only brother, George Tyler.
She worked as a legal secretary for the law firm of Harrington, Bookhout and Harlem for many years.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Sally W. Tyler of Oneonta; a niece, Linda Tyler Davis of Schuyler Lake; great-niece, Jennifer L. Davis; great-nephew, Geoffrey M. Davis; and a special great-great-nephew, Lucas E. Davis; an aunt, Eva Hunt; a cousin, Jane Huyer of Oneonta; and a cousin, Marilyn Wickham of Delhi.
Florence requested that there be no funeral or calling hours.
Cremation will take place at Hillington Crematory, Morris, with a graveside service at the East Meredith Cemetery, East Meredith, at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, with the Rev. Ed Carlson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Florence Tyler Eaton.

Earl Twiss
OXFORD Earl Twiss, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at the New York State Veterans' Home, Oxford.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at the NYS Veterans' Home, followed by burial with full military honors in the Veterans' Home Cemetery.
Friends may call at the NYS Veterans' Home on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the NYS Veterans' Home, 4211 State Highway 220, Oxford, NY.

Eva Anna Hunt
ONEONTA Eva Anna Hunt, 107, of Oneonta, died on Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.
She was born on March 29, 1895, in Pine Hill, the daughter of the late Theodore and Rachel Hornbeck Sprague.
She was married to Leon L. Hunt on Dec. 30, 1914, in East Meredith. Mr. Hunt died Oct. 30, 1952.
Mrs. Hunt was the oldest member of the East Meredith Presbyterian Church, East Meredith, having served as a trustee and an elder and also teaching Sunday school for many years.
She was a former member of the Eastern Star at Delhi. She was also a member of the Oneonta Royal Rebekah Lodge and Past Grand Association; a member of the Anne E. Wilber Auxiliary No. 4 of Oneonta, and was known as Lady Eva Hunt, attaining the highest degree in the Rebekahs. She was a member of the Golden Age Club, the Senior Citizens Club and the East Meredith Ladies group. She worked for many years on the Election Board and was a former member of the Arts and Crafts Group in Davenport.
In addition to her mother, father and husband, she was also predeceased by her son, Leon (Lee) Hunt; her daughter, Rachel Muschett; her brothers, Frank Sprague and Joseph Sprague; three sisters, Florence Henderson, Jane Stoutenburg and Sarah Tyler.
She is survived by her daughter, Jane Huyer and her husband, Garret, of Oneonta; three grandsons, Garret Huyer and wife, Lisa, of Vermont, James Muschett and his wife, Penny, of Pennsylvania, and Richard Muschett and his wife, Brenda, of Missouri; and seven granddaughters, Lizbeth Herrick and her husband, Craig, of Liverpool, Joanne Thompson and her husband, Vern, Deborah Walters, Jackie Doyle and her husband, Joe, Judy Bagvy and her husband, Robert, Barbara Sue Taylor and her husband, Alan, and Jane Haugen and her husband, Jim, all of California; a daughter-in-law, Catherine Hunt Boland and her husband, Robert, of California; 24 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, Marilyn Wickam and her husband, Richard, JoAnn Sprague Ruud and her husband, Gary, and Susan Sprague.
Eva enjoyed a full active life. She graduated from the two-room schoolhouse in East Meredith. She worked at Scintilla during World War II and also worked at Bresee's Department Store.
She enjoyed playing bridge and canasta whenever possible even to the age of 107. She loved politics and voted in all elections. She read her daily newspaper and watched the news and game shows on television.
She was dearly loved by all her family. She was happily at "home" in the A.O. Fox Nursing Home for several years with those who worked in Unit 3. She loved her caretakers and appreciated their care and compassion.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., at which time the family will be in attendance.
A private committal service and burial will be held at the convenience of the family at the East Meredith Cemetery.
It has been requested in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the East Meredith Presbyterian Church, East Meredith, NY 13757 in care of Barbara MacClintock.

Carol Joslyn
GARDEN CITY BEACH, S.C. Carol Reynolds Joslyn of Garden City Beach, S.C., died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, in South Carolina.
Born March 5, 1929, in Fleischmanns, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Ward K. and R. Kilpatrick Reynolds.
Mrs. Joslyn received her bachelor of science degree from Ithaca College and was a retired school teacher from Gilboa-Conesville Central School District, Gilboa, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Joslyn in 2000.
Surviving are her daughter, Kim J. McCluski and husband, Stephen, of Pittsford, N.Y; son, Robert W. Joslyn Jr. and wife, Sue, of New Kingston, Pa.; grandchildren, Brad and Ryan McCluski, and Sara, Amy and Tucker Joslyn; great-grandson, Sebastian Haas; sisters, Ann Rudolf and husband, Robert, of North Salem, N.Y., and Virginia Huggins and husband, Dr. Ray Huggins, of Newark, Del.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be private.

Ernest M. Collins
UNADILLA Ernest M. Collins, 98, of Unadilla, beloved husband for more than 60 years of the late Yvonne Newcomb of Oneonta, passed away on July 30, 2002, in Cherry Hill, N.J.
He was the son of Martin and Maryanne (Galvan) Collins, who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by Susan, Sarah, Jane, Mary, Elanore, Harold and Frances, his many brothers and sisters, as well as his son, Hugh Collins, and son-in-law, John Locatell.
Ernest was born Jan. 29, 1904, in Salem, where his brother's family still resides.
He graduated from Salem High School and attended further schooling in Chicago in preparation for his 43-year career with the New York State Electric & Gas Corp., where he helped bring light to thousands of people in New York state.
Ernest was an original, lifelong member of the Sidney Elks Lodge No. 2175 and a member of St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church, Unadilla, for many years.
He loved gardening and woodworking, and will always be remembered for the hundreds of pieces of beautiful stained glass art he lovingly made and distributed to family and friends, as well as strangers.
After retirement, Ernest and Yvonne traveled the country twice, and he often recounted in detail the amazing sights and adventures they had.
He is survived by his daughter, Maryanne Locatell of Margate, N.J., where Ernest spent his last years by the beach; his daughter-in-law, Yolanda Garcia Collins of Guam; his grandchildren, Sharon Locatell and Tim Harris of Brooklyn, Dawn Locatell and Massi Bongianni of Florence, Italy, Chris and Tricia Locatell of Moorestown, N.J., and Marilyn Collins of Sacramento, Calif.; and his great-grandchildren, Julian, Nina, John and Thomas, all of whom were indeed very lucky to have had a great-grandfather as wonderful as he. Dad and Gramps, we love you and miss you. Ernest is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at St. Ambrose Church, Unadilla, with the Rev. Gordon A. Polenz, pastor, officiating.
Interment will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.
Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, when the family will be in attendance.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Scleroderma Foundation.

Nelda Howell
GREENWICH, Conn. Nelda Audibert Howell, a member of the Cooperstown Art Association, whose works were often exhibited at the Pioneer Gallery, died July 31, 2002, at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut of a stroke.
Born May 11, 1917, in Chambery, France, she was 85.
Mrs. Howell, who is survived by her husband, John I. Howell, the former chairman of the board of J. Henry Schroder Bank and a former director of the American International Group, spent many summers at their home in Springfield Center.
Mrs. Howell, a Greenwich, Conn., resident since 1948, came to this country when she was 17 to live in New York City with her parents, the late Frank and Nelda Robinson Audibert.
She attended Chapin School in New York City.
As a student of artist Julius Delbos, Mrs. Howell held her first exhibit at the Argent Gallery in New York City at the age of 19.
In addition to the Cooperstown Art Association, Mrs. Howell was a member of the Greenwich Art Society, the Hudson Valley Art Association and the Stamford Art Association. She exhibited with the American Watercolor Society and held numerous shows in the Greenwich area.
A Nov. 4, 1988, review in The Greenwich Times described her paintings as "hardly whimsical, but neither are they serious ...they sparkle with life. Her work covers a range of subject matter, predominantly landscapes and floral still lifes ... Her paintings, rich from her experiences and many years of study, reflect an individualistic style."
Mrs. Howell was also an avid tennis player and golfer.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Howell is survived by two children, John I. Howell Jr. of Warwick, R.I., and Claire H. Blatchford of Shelburne, Mass.; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Springfield Center, N.Y.

Beatrice Benkert
SOUTH KORTRIGHT Beatrice "Betty" Benkert, 71, of South Kortright died Aug. 6, 2002, at home after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Nov. 15, 1930, the daughter of Gerard R. and Lulu (Squire) Leonard.
She married Howard J. Benkert on Long Island in 1952. He passed away in 1981. Her parents and a brother, Gerard F. Leonard, also predeceased her.
Betty was a 35-year resident of South Kortright, where she taught physical education and coached for 20 years at South Kortright Central School and also taught at Andes Central. She was active after retirement in the South Kortright basketball program and served for more than 20 years as the timekeeper for games. She had a great love of sports, teaching and her grandchildren.
Mrs. "B" will be greatly missed by her family, neighbors, former co-workers and students.
A daughter, MaryLou Benkert Pidd (James) of Tucson, Ariz.; three sons, Jack Benkert (Christine) of Vienna, Va., Bill Benkert of South Kortright, and John Benkert (Kelly) of Acton, Mass.; seven beloved grandchildren, Jeremy, Jason, Shannon, Caitlin, Abigail, Emma and Amelia; and her canine companion, Bailey, all survive.
A special "thank you" from the family to the caregivers of FoxCare.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday evening, Aug. 8, 2002, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery, Rose's Brook, South Kortright, following the service.
Contributions in her memory may be made to either Bloomville Emergency Squad or Catskill Area Hospice.

Lynn A. Johnson
DELHI Lynn A. Johnson, 57, of Delhi died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at home.
He was born Feb. 23, 1945, in Stamford, the son of Malcolm E. and Dorothy E. (Hitt) Johnson.
He married Sandra Eckert at Indian Lake on Aug. 25, 1983.
A lifelong area resident, Lynn was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps serving from 1966-1968, and enjoyed membership in the American Legion Post No. 190 of Delhi.
He was a self-employed carpenter in the area. His hobbies were camping, hunting and fishing.
His is survived by his wife, Sandra, at home; a daughter, Anita (Phil) Carnicelli, Delhi; and a son, David Shaw, Delhi; his parents, Malcolm and Dorothy Johnson, Bloomville; grandchildren, Charlie, Torry and Stephen; two sisters, Linda Burdick and Sue Skog of Bloomville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with Tom Davis officiating.
There will be no calling hours. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Memorial Fund at American Legion Post No. 190, Page Avenue, Delhi, NY 13753.

Mary G. Skubitz
HARTWICK Mrs. Mary G. Skubitz, 91, of Hartwick and formerly of Mount Vision died Sunday morning, Aug. 4, 2002, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
Mary was born on Aug. 8, 1910, in Little Falls, a daughter of Philip and Mary Biat.
She married Anton K. ("Tony") Skubitz on July 2, 1939. Mr. Skubitz died on June 30, 1997.
For more than 50 years, Mary and her husband, Tony, owned and operated a dairy farm in Mount Vision. During the 1960s, she also was employed as a cook for Sherry's Famous Restaurant in Cooperstown.
A resident of Hartwick for the past several years, she attended the Hartwick Christian Church.
Mary is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins, including a special nephew, Keith M. Skubitz of Edina, Minn.; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. William (Audrey) Skubitz of Burlington Green and Mrs. Frank (Irene) Skubitz of Richfield Springs.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at the Hartwick Cemetery, with the Rev. Laverne H. Saxer, pastor of the Hartwick Christian Church, officiating.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
George Misencik
JORDANVILLE George P. Misencik Sr., age 82, of Hicks Road in Mohawk died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Martha Halkowich Misencik; a daughter, Joyce Owsinski of Middle Village, Queens; three sons and their wives, George P. Jr. and Alice Misencik of Hartwick, David and Dorenda Misencik of Phoenix, Ariz., and John and Linda Misencik of Mohawk; 11 grandchildren, Ben, Michael and his wife, Lai Owsinski, Ryan and his wife, Becky Misencik, Raymie, Randy, Nicole, John "JJ" and Josh Misencik, Todd, Brad and Ethan; one brother, Richard Misencik of Middlesex; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Walter L. Misencik; and his son-in-law, Walter Owsinski.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8, in Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs.
Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad or the Cedarville Emergency Squad. Envelopes will be available at the church.

Irene J. Northrup
WALTON Irene J. Northrup, 59, passed away Aug. 7, 2002, at home with her family by her side.
She was born June 24, 1943, in Walton, to Gerald W. and Clara Stokes Jones.
She married Lonald Baxter in 1960. She later married James Northrup on Dec. 13, 1997.
Irene attended school in Walton. She worked all her adult life, starting at Jerry's Restaurant. She was also employed by Northrup Electric and Bard Parker. Later in life she discovered that being a home health caregiver to the elderly was the work she enjoyed most and did that until ill health caused her retirement.
She liked having lawn sales, going to lawn sales and auctions, playing cards and bingo. Her house was always open and the coffee pot on for her many friends and relatives who enjoyed her friendship, cooking and barbecues.
She is survived by her husband, Jim; two sons, Gary Baxter of Cooperstown, and Phillip Baxter of Long Island; a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Harold Caffery; and brother-in-law, Bernard Judd, all of Walton; two aunts, Adelia Signor of Florida, and Doris Conklin of Walton; her beloved stepchildren and spouses, Sharon MacRabie and her fiance, Mike Harrington, Gerald Northrup, Tom and Brenda Northrup, Susan and Douglas Earl, and Sandra Kaczmarek; 19 grandchildren, Kimberly, Shannon, John, Addison, Shannon and Courtney Baxter, Geoffery and Kim and Jocelyn MacRabie, Farrah and Jim Kilmer, Sean, Robert, Jason, Derek, Amber and Jessica Northrup, John, Ashley and Mike Kaczmarek and Cassidy Hannon; great-grandchildren, Devin, Zachary and Austin Kilmer; several nieces and nephews, cousins and friends; mother-in-law, Florence Northrup; brothers-in-law and wives, Milton and Joyce, Howard (Neal); Richard and Cecelia, Roger and Linda Northrup; and sister-in-law, Elinor Green.
She was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Alfred, Donald and Robert Jones; sister, Jean Judd; and stepson David Northrup.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Clark and Winter Funeral Home in Walton.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at the United Methodist Church at 101 North St., Walton, with the Rev. Paul Cronin officiating. Burial will be in the Walton Cemetery.
