Lester C. Whipple
DAVENPORT CENTER Les Whipple, 77, of Davenport Center, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002.
He was born June 21, 1925, in Oneonta the son of Clyde and Lena (Coe) Whipple.
He married Betty Jane MacCracken on Dec. 31, 1943. She predeceased him on Aug. 19, 1992 after 49 years of marriage.
They resided in Davenport Center since 1952. Les attended Oneonta Normal School and Charlotte Valley Central School. He was a truck driver for many different companies, hauling milk, coal, lumber and various other products. He also worked as a farmer for a period of time. In 1951, he went to work for the Allied Corporation, then known as Bendix ECD. He retired in 1986 after 35 years of service.
He is survived by his daughter, Sally Nolin, and her fiancι Jason Martin, of East Meredith; his son, Duane, and his spouse, Rose (Pietrefesa) Whipple, of Oneonta; also his grandchildren, Tina (Nolin) Camarda and her husband, Richard Jr., of Laurens, Steven Nolin of East Meredith, Lena Mae, Emily Rose and Kate Marie Whipple, all of Oneonta; a sister, Gertrude (Whipple) Egry, of Rhinebeck, N.Y.; as well as several sisters and brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 5, at 11 a.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Ed Carlson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Davenport Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 until 5 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.
Memorial contributions may be made to the East Meredith Fire Department, 6192 County Hwy 10, East Meredith, NY 13757 in loving memory of Les Whipple.

Dominic A. Scorzafava
ONEONTA Dominic A. (Tony) Scorzafava, 87, of Oneonta died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.
He was born June 13, 1915, in Childs, Pa., the son of Santo and Rose (Vogliano) Scorzafava.
For many years, Tony owned and operated a barbershop in Norwich. He also served in the United States Army National Guard.
He was a member of St. Mary's Church, and a former member of the Oneonta Eagles.
He is survived by his wife, Carmella Scorzafava of Centereach; his children, Rose Ann Haynes and Josephine Haug both of Delaware, Ohio; Joseph Scorzafava of Cary, N.C., and Sandra Davis of Centereach; his brothers and sisters, Flory Scorzafava of West Palm Beach, Fla., Marino (Tiny) Scorzafava of Oneonta, Eleanor VanCuren of Oneonta and Lillian Fetcho of Bethlehem, Pa.
He is also survived by nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and several nieces nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 11 a.m. in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Oneonta Nursing Home.
Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
Millie Jane Wart
BINGHAMTON Millie Jane Wart, 93, went to be with her lord on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Willow Point Nursing Home.
She was predeceased by her husband, Hanford, and several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Lamont "Monte" and Loretta Wart of Chenango Forks; five grandchildren, Valeria Reisig of Richmond, Ky., Joseph Wart of Endwell; Valerie Korell of Johnson City; Brandon Wart of Port Dickinson; and Laura Warner of Fort Dickinson, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 5, at noon from the Ernest H. Parsons Funeral Home, Inc., 71 Main St., Binghamton. The Rev. Alan R. Jagger will officiate.
Burial will be in Fly Creek Cemetery, Fly Creek, at 2:45 p.m.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 10 am until the time of the service.

Elizabeth J. Wyckoff
COOPERSTOWN A memorial service for Elizabeth June Wyckoff, 84, who died June 25, 2002, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, in St. Agnes Chapel at Christ Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Canon John B. Birdsall, a retired Episcopal priest, officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
Alfonso Monaco
ONEONTA Alfonso Monaco, 88, of Oneonta passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2002, at the A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
He was born Nov. 30, 1913, in the Bronx, the son of Frank and Catherine (Romano) Monaco. He married Maria A. Papia on Nov. 26, 1939, in New York City.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy. After his discharge he joined the Civil Air Patrol.
For many years, he worked as a welder in the metal fabrication business in the metropolitan New York City area.
Up until two weeks ago, Monaco and his wife resided in Brooklyn, where they maintained residence in a senior citizen housing complex. He was very involved in their activities, which included committees and other volunteer projects.
Monaco had varied interests, but was most fond of drawing, painting, playing the piano, singing, automobiles, and coin collecting. Most of all, he enjoyed the special times spent with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Maria A. Monaco of Oneonta; his son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Maria Monaco of Oneonta; four grandchildren, Annmarie Forbis, and her husband Ed of Raleigh, N.C., Michael Bivona, Jr., and his wife Lisa of Oneonta, Frank A. Monaco, and his wife Elizabeth of South New Berlin, and Marisa T. Monaco of Oneonta; two great-grandchildren, Edward S. and Gianna M. Forbis; two sisters, Mary Capasso of Florida, and Jose Feller of Long Island, along with several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter Maria Bivona, and a grandchild, Rosemarie Bivona.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Wednesday, July 31, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
Arrangements were by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
Ruth F. Raynor
STAMFORD Ruth F. Raynor, 90, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Monroeton, Pa.
She was born June 10, 1912, at West Franklin, Pa., the daughter of Lee Paul and Edith (Musselman) Fairchild.
She graduated from Canton High School, Canton, Pa., in 1930. She received a bachelor's degree from Mansfield College in Reading, Pa., and a second bachelor's degree from Mansfield State Teachers College in Mansfield, Pa. Ruth also attended summer school at Syracuse University and Oneonta State Teachers College.
Her teaching career started at Waverly High School, Waverly, Pa., and continued for several years at Stamford and Grand Gorge central schools.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, the Abigail Harper Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Stamford, the New York State Retired Teachers Association, Stamford-Harpersfield Senior Citizens and volunteered at the CORE Value Store in Stamford.
Ruth was married to the late Howard J. Raynor, June 30, 1941, at Canton, Pa.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty R. Holden and her husband Allen of Douglas, Mass.; a son, John H. Raynor of Delhi; three grandchildren, Allen, Scott and Russell and his wife Clotilde, and a great-grandson, Nathaniel; two brothers, George Fairchild of Monroeton, Pa., and Paul Fairchild of Florida. Also surviving are five sisters-in-law, Marian Raynor, Louise, Mary and Shirley Fairchild, and Thelma Park, and several nieces and nephews.
Ruth was predeceased by her brothers, the Rev. Lee M. Fairchild and his wife Janet, Francis F. Fairchild and Walter Clay Fairchild.
Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, Aug. 2.
Funeral services will be held in the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Adrian McFarlane officiating.
Ruth's family requests that contributions be made in her memory to the Stamford Fire Department, the R. A. Robinson Emergency Squad and the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.
Thomas J. McCabe
WORCESTER Thomas J. McCabe, 87, died on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002.
A resident of Worcester, N.Y., and a former resident of Bronxville, N.Y., he was the son of E.J. and Matie (Murphy) McCabe of Worcester.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice (Sperry) McCabe. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in September 2001. His brothers Edward, of Worcester and Delray Beach, Fla., and William and his wife Barbara, of Worcester also survive him. He is survived by sons Michael and his wife Virginia of Longmeadow, Massachusetts and Thomas and his wife Susan of West Suffield, Conn.; four grandchildren, Christine of Boston, Thomas III and James of West Suffield, Conn., and Kaitlin of Tampa, Fla. Many nieces and nephews also survive him.
His brother, Frederick, who lived in Kansas City, predeceased him.
He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester. He was a vice president for Grolier Inc., a publisher of educational books. During the Second World War he worked as a volunteer for the United States Coastal Defense in Boston. He was a former member of the Worcester School Board and a lifetime member of the Grange.
Fond of the outdoors, he reforested much of the farmland on his property in Worcester, where he enjoyed hunting in the fall.
Calling hours will be held tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester with the Rev. William Crandall as celebrant.
Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Worcester Emergency Squad, PO Box 91, Worcester, NY 12197.

Richard W. Brewer
DENVER Richard W. Brewer, 66, of Sallys Alley in Denver, passed away Aug. 3, 2002, at his residence.
He was born on Jan. 18, 1936, in Delhi, the son of Warren Brewer and Alvira Samuels.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving Jan. 31, 1956 to Dec. 17, 1959.
Richard had been employed as a mechanic and also was a truck driver for Aero Transporting of Ellenville.
He lived in Denver for the past four years, moving from New Kingston.
He is survived by his fiancee, Barbara Snyder, of Denver; four daughters, Patsy Gentry, Cathy Todd, Carol Short and Hope Allweiler; seven sons, Richie, John, Paul, Donnie, Bobbie, Tommy and Lucus Brewer; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers, Charles and Donald Brewer; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at the Advent Christian Church in Margaretville, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating.
Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Hancock.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
Leland M. Wyman
UNADILLA Leland M. Wyman, 89, of Unadilla, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi.
He was born Sept. 11, 1912, in Unadilla, the son of Byron and Adah May (Vandewalker) Wyman.
He was married to Augusta Kiel on June 3, 1939, in Otego. Mrs. Wyman died May 5, 2000.
Leland was a lifelong Unadilla resident and was a former employee of Carleton G. Whitaker Inc. of Unadilla and retired as an employee of York Modern Corp. of Unadilla.
He was a member of the Three River's Coon Club, Unadilla Boy Scouts and the Unadilla Rod and Gun Club.
He is survived by a nephew, Byron Wilber; and several great-nieces and -nephews.
Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.
There will be no calling hours.
Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.
Richard Bestwick
UNADILLA Richard J. Bestwick, 86, of Unadilla, passed away after a long illness on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at the home of his son, David, and his wife, Debra, Bestwick.
He was born Jan. 8, 1916, in Westmoreland City , Pa.
He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Air Corps from May 1941 to November 1945. While stationed in England with the 8th and then the 9th Air Corps, he met his wife, Olive M. Cordrey, who was in the RAF. Olive passed away on Nov. 11, 2000.
Richard is survived by his three children, David R. Bestwick of Unadilla, Jeannette Wilt of Forked River, N.J., and Richard Bestwick Jr. of Yarnell, Ariz.; along with eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
His remains will be taken back to Philadelphia, Pa., to be buried with his beloved wife, Olive.
Richard will be truly missed by his children and loved ones, Good-bye Dad, you were a great father.

Alice L. Davis
ONEONTA Alice Lorraine Davis, 50, of Oneonta, and formerly of Edmeston and Binghamton, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at the Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.
She was born in Oneida, the daughter of Ernest and Nellie (Townsend) Davis. She was never married.
She is survived by her mother, Nellie, of the Fox Nursing Home; her uncle, John Townsend of Dallas, Texas; four cousins, Gary Fisher and Steve McWilliams of Morris, Ester Mayne of West Burlington, and Joanne Crumb of Dallas, Texas.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at the Interfaith Meditation Chapel at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, with the Rev. Judy Thistle officiating. Committal services and burial will be held at 1 p.m. at the Hillington Cemetery in Morris, with the Rev. Ann S. Blair officiating.
There will be no calling hours.

Stacey D. Beisler
STAMFORD Stacey D. Beisler, 42, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Robinson Terrace after a long and courageous battle against Huntington's disease.
She was born on June 25, 1960, at the Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, Calif., the daughter of Robert and Donna (Reed) Franz.
A lifelong area resident, Stacey graduated from Stamford Central School in 1978, and was voted prom queen of her class.
She excelled in many extra-curricular activities including but not limited to soccer, tennis and volleyball.
She was married to Paul A. Beisler in 1981 in Harpersfield. A devoted mother and homemaker, she will always be remembered for her passion for life, family and friends.
Her oldest son, Cory, predeceased Stacey on Jan. 6, 2002.
She is survived by her children, Jamie and Ryan of Milford; her mother, Donna Leven, of Goodyear Lake, and her stepfather Richard P. Leven, of Annapolis, Md.; her siblings, Debbie Topley and Shawnee Smith, Bobbee Soto, Brett Leven and Diana Brewer; and many uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 5, 2002, when the family will be in attendance from 5 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held in the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, with the Rev. Adrian McFarlane officiating.
A private interment will take place in the Stamford Cemetery, Stamford, at a later date.
Contributions may be made in Stacey's memory to the Huntington's Disease Society of America, 158 West 29th Street, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001-5300, and Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta, NY 13820.
