Metro A. Demchko
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Metro A. Demchko, 85, of 59 Main St., passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at Valley Health Services.
He was born in Beacon Falls, Conn., on Sept. 22, 1916, the son of the late Andrew and Anastasia Urda Demchko. He attended school in Cullen, N.Y.
Metro served with the United States Army during WWII in the European Theater as a staff sergeant with the 416 MPEG Company and participated in the Invasion of Normandy.
He was married to Marion Gala on Sept. 1, 1946, in Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Church. Marion passed away on Dec. 8, 1979. He was later united in marriage to Joyce Gross Lyon on Jan. 19, 1991, in Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Church.
Mr. Demchko was employed by the Dairyman's League at the Richfield Springs plant for more than 40 years. He was later employed in the maintenance department of Mohawk Data Science, until his retirement in 1980.
He was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Church in East Herkimer, American Legion Post #616 in Richfield Springs, Masonic Temple 0482 F&AM in Richfield Springs and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
Metro is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Diane Demcko of Phoenix, Ariz., and Ronald and Mary Beth Demcko of Raleigh, N.C.; his stepchildren, Floyd and Joanne Lyon of Little Falls, Jeffrey and Patricia Lyon of East Herkimer, John and Patricia Petrie of Herkimer, and Linda Lyon and Gary Lyon, both of East Herkimer; one brother and sister-in- law, Samuel and Jeanne Homiack of Braydenton, Fla.; one sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Charles Anthony of Mohawk; his grandchildren, Scott Demcko, Sarah Lyon, Matthew Lyon, Katelyn Lyon, Jeremy Lyon, Jacob Lyon, Alan Petrie and Joseph Petrie; and several in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his stepfather, Philip Homiack
His funeral will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from Petykiewiez, Iocovozzi, & Burns Funeral Home, at 329 S. Washington St. in Herkimer and 9:30 a.m. at Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Church with the Very Rev. Fr. James Jadick, pastor, officiating.
Interment will be in Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi, & Burns Funeral Home.
Parastas will be held Sunday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home with Father Jadick officiating.
In Metros's memory, contributions may be made to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Members of the Masonic Temple will meet Sunday at 7:15 p.m. and the American Legion at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home for services.
Metro's family extends a sincere thank you to the nurses and staff of St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Valley Health Service's First Floor East and Dr. Veechio and Dr. Chaffe for all the wonderful care and compassion shown to him during his illness and passing.
Glen Blumenstock
CHERRY VALLEY — Glen O. "Tex" Blumenstock, 89, beloved husband of Mary Margaret "Peg" (Hemenway) Blumenstock (who predeceased him in 1978) and loving father of Frank Blumenstock, Suzanne Mayer, and John Blumenstock, passed away unexpectedly, Friday, July 26, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.
He was born Sept. 13, 1912, in Cherry Valley, the son of Arthur and Sarah (Watrous) Blumenstock.
Tex was a lifelong resident of Cherry Valley He graduated from Cherry Valley High School and Cornell University.
He was a renowned dairyman in the Holstein Association. He was proud to teach farming to veterans of the Korean War studying on the GI Bill. He was also a member of Cornell Cooperative Extension, became a master gardener and wrote for the group's monthly publication.
He shared his recipes for smoking meat, homemade ice cream and all the many foods he grew so lovingly on the land his grandparents settled on at the end of the 19th century.
Tex was known for his story telling of his beautiful life in Cherry Valley.
He lived through the Depression, survived WWII and polio and felt the "worst thing that ever happened to him was when the Republicans took over the Senate." He was a lifelong Democrat and an enthusiastic supporter of the windmill project for Cherry Valley.
Survivors include his three children, Frank Blumenstock of Loudonville, N.Y., Suzanne Mayer of Rochester, N.Y., and John Blumenstock of Louisville, Ky.; six grandchildren, Marc, Brooke, Ann, Lisa, Davin and Matt; and his cousin Ruth Steenburgh of Cherry Valley.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 30, at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church in Cherry Valley with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, July 29, at the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.
Contributions in Tex's memory may be made to the Master Gardener Program, Cornell Cooperative Extension, 123 Lake St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home of Cherry Valley.
Edna B. Sobers
ONEONTA — Mrs. Edna B. Sobers, 85, of Oneonta, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.
She was born Dec. 24, 1916, in Harpersfield, the daughter of Charles and Julia (Chandler) Ross.
She married James B. Sobers on July 4, 1947, in Oneonta. Mr. Sobers predeceased her on April 23, 1998.
A lifelong area resident, Edna worked at the Oneonta Dress Co. as a finisher. She was a member of the Oneonta Moose Club and a former member of the Eagles Club. She enjoyed crocheting, word finds, playing bingo and cards and especially her dog Buddy.
She is survived by her four sons, Francis Perry of Brooklyn, Charles Sobers of Maryland, Ralph Sobers of Oneonta and Fred Sobers of Oneonta; one sister, Gladys Roe of Oneonta; a very special friend, Trudy Howe of Oneonta; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John and Norma Sobers of Oneonta, Carl Sobers of Oneonta, Carl Puylera of Oneonta and Aurilla Stringer of Florida; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Edna was predeceased by two sisters, Bernice Carey and Bessie Silvernail; a half sister, Myrtle Cain; three brothers, Howard, Harry and Claude Silvernail; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Sophia Puylera, George and Rachel Smith, Fred Sobers, Al Sobers, Evelyn Cornell and Joanne Sobers.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, at 357 Main St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating.
Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
The family will be present at the funeral home on Monday, July 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish to call.

Florence N. Robinson
OTEGO — Mrs. Florence N. Robinson, 69, of Otego died Friday, July 26, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
She was born June 3, 1933, in Deposit, the daughter of Frank and Vera (Kathcart) Drake.
She married Clyde L. Robinson on Jan. 25, 1952, in Oneonta.
Florence was a lifelong area resident having moved to the area at the age of 6. She enjoyed doll collecting and was an avid web master.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Clyde L. Robinson of Otego; her children and their spouses, Steven L. and Connie Robinson of Milford, Paul A. and Marcia Robinson of Garrettsville, Claire E. and Pat Robinson of Garrettsville, Doreen Lynn and Roger Gladle of Syracuse, Patricia A. and Willis Fergusen of Otego, and Sandra Lee Bashant and Robert Rifanburg of Otego; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ivan Drake of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Leslie and Kate Drake of Otego; one sister, Mary Palmer of Norwich; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Florence was predeceased by a grandson, Steven L. Robinson, II, three sisters, Rose, Ella and Dorothy, and two brothers, Charlie and Edward.
A service to celebrate the life of Florence N. Robinson will be held on Monday, July 29, 2002, at noon at the home of Clyde L. Robinson.
There will be no calling hours.
It has been requested that in lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad, River Street, Otego, NY 13825 in loving memory of Florence N. Robinson.
Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta.
Herbert G. Carlson
UNADILLA — Herbert G. Carlson, 82, of Unadilla, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
He was born May 31, 1920, in Brooklyn, the son of Uno and Elsa (Wennstrom) Carlson.
He was married to Marguerite O'Halloran, June 20, 1942, in Oneonta.
Herbert was a resident of Unadilla since 1935 and for many years owned and operated an excavating business in Unadilla.
He was a member and past master of Masonic Freedom Lodge #324 of Unadilla, member and past patron of the Eastern Star Chapter #179 of Unadilla, past grand sentinel of New York State, and a member of Elks Lodge #2175 of Sidney.
Herb is survived by his wife, Marguerite Carlson of Sidney; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kathie Carlson of Freemont, Ind.; his granddaughters, Melissa Harvey, Christine DiDonna, Katrina Carlson and Kristen Carlson; also a niece, nephew and cousins.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Joyce DiDonna, a brother, Robert Carlson, and his sister, Ruth Wuthrich.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, at the Westcott Funeral Home in Unadilla.
Interment will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday, July 28, from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Esther E. Dornburgh
ROSEBOOM — Private services will be held for Esther Elizabeth Jensen Dornburgh, 73, who died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at her residence in the hamlet of Center Valley.
She was born Sept. 9, 1928, in St. James (Suffolk County), the daughter of Fred and Elna (Nelson) Jensen.
She worked as a seamstress out of her home for 52 years.
Survivors include her husband, Frank E. Dornburgh Jr., whom she married Sept. 11, 1949, at St. Mary's Church in Springfield Center; a son, Frank E. Dornburgh III of Cherry Valley; a daughter, Leanna Ingrid Brown Jensen of Cobleskill; two sisters, Anna May Fisher (John) and Jean Schineller (David), both of Ballston Spa; four grandsons, Kenny Brown of Cobleskill, Frank E. Dornburgh IV of Vermont, and Albert and Shaun Dornburgh, both of Cherry Valley; and special nephew, David Schineller of Ellington, Conn.
She was predeceased by a sister, Elna Rogers, and two brothers, William Jensen in 1996 and Julius Jensen in 1998.
Cremation was at Vale Cemetery Crematorium in Schenectady.

Arthur B. Rogers
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Committal services will be held at the Bennett Cemetery in West Laurens, on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 11 a.m. for Dr. Arthur Bartlett Rogers, 89, who passed away Friday, July 12, 2002, in a Norfolk, Va., hospital.
Dr. Rogers was born in West Laurens, son of the late Truman Irving Rogers and Nellie Ora Cogshall.
He graduated from Cornell Veterinary School in 1934. Dr. Rogers served in the Army Air Force during World War II in veterinary services, and then continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve as a veterinarian until his retirement Dec. 5, 1972. He had a great love of horses.
Survivors include his son, James Boyle Rogers, his wife, Rita, and granddaughter Beth, all of Houston, Tex.; two brothers, Kenneth W. Rogers and his wife, Virginia, of Oneonta and Harold E. Rogers of Canfield, Ohio. His family and friends will miss him.

Neilon J. Ainslie
LINCOLN, Neb. — Neilon James Ainslie, 73, of Lincoln, Neb., died March 7, 2002, in South Dakota.
He was born on Oct. 9, 1928, in Hartwick, N.Y., a son of James Lee and Nina Lucy (Bowmaker) Ainslie.
A graveside service and burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2002, in the Hartwick Cemetery with Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta, officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
Bruce D. Small
OXFORD — Bruce D. Small of Oxford died unexpectedly on July 26, 2002 at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.
He was born on May 19, 1936 in Amsterdam, the son of the late Andrew and Rachel (Deal) Small.
On May 16, 1960, in West Bridgewater, Mass., he married the former Sally Mather, who survives.
Besides his wife, Sally, he is survived by his children, Karen Small Archambault and her husband, Mark, of Nashua, N.H., Dr. Linda J. Powell and her husband, Steven, of Odessa, Wash., Nancy L. Smith and her husband, Christopher, of Chittenango, and James M. Small of Oxford; his grandchildren, Zachary, Kira, and Griffey Powell and Casey Smith; his sister-in-law, Lucille Small and several nieces and nephews.
Small was a graduate of Amsterdam High School, Class of 1954, and Bentley College in 1956.
He was a former member of Trinity Reformed Church in Amsterdam and then the Oxford Congregational Church, now the United Church of Oxford. He served the church in many capacities, including trustee, consistory, Sunday School teacher, softball coach and from 1999 until the present he was the Financial Secretary of the church.
He worked for the Arkansas Traveler Boat Co. prior to moving to Oxford in 1963, and starting his career with Norwich Eaton Pharmaceutical as an accountant.
Small retired from Proctor and Gamble in 1996. Following his retirement, he worked part-time for Chenango Truck in Oxford as an accountant.
He was currently serving his ninth term as mayor of the village of Oxford and had also served as a village trustee for 10 years. He was a member and former chairman of the Chenango County Planning Board and helped in the formation of the village of Oxford Planning Board.
He was a member and past president of the Oxford Rotary Club. He was also a member of the Oxford Fire Department and the Oxford Emergency Squad since 1988.
He was the current president of the Oxford Industrial Development Corp. He served on the Chenango County Traffic Safety Board and the Chenango County Arson Task Force.
He was named the Oxford Lions Club Citizen of the Year in 1984-85. He was the chairman of the Oxford United Methodist Church Building Fund in 1964.
When he was not serving Oxford, he was watching his children grow and participate in sports. He was a coach for the Oxford Youth Sports Program during those years. He also volunteered at the Oxford Academy and Central School on several committees.
Small also served as a judge for the last five years for Odyssey of the Mind.
He enjoyed golfing and bowling and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Oxford, Main Street in Oxford, with the Rev. Allen C. Lang, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery in Oxford.
Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St. in Oxford, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Capital Fund for Renovations at the Main Street Church of the United Church of Oxford or the Oxford Emergency Squad.
Beula C. Prindle
NEW BERLIN — Beula C. Prindle, 92, of New Berlin died Saturday, July 27, 2002, in New Berlin.
She was born in Rogers Hollow in the town of Unadilla on June 7, 1910 to the late Lester and Clara (Ackley) Carvin.
She spent her childhood in Unadilla, where she attended the local school.
On Jan. 11, 1938, Beula married her husband, Frank Prindle, who predeceased her on March 13, 1975. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Unice Robinson and Deila Alger.
She is survived by her children, Marie Brink of New Berlin, Gary and Judy Prindle of Montandon, Pa., and Michael and Jana Prindle of New Suffolk; one brother, Eena Carvin of Unadilla; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Beula is affiliated with the Friends Church in Rogers Hollow.
Viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at the Dakin Funeral Home. The officiating minister will be the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church in New Berlin.
The interment will be at Sand Hill Cemetery in Wells Bridge.
Beula was a great mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family, which included five generations. Her hobbies included knitting socks, making homemade donuts and watching the N.Y. Mets and The Price is Right.
Memorial donations may be made to the Chenango County Hospice.
