Leona E. Carr
MILFORD CENTER — Leona E. Carr, 71, of Milford Center, passed away after a short illness Sunday, July 21, 2002, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
She was born July 12, 1931, in Oneonta, the daughter of Charles and Minnie (Oliver) Haskin.
She was married to Gerald D. Carr on April 21, 1962, in Milford Center.
She was previously married to Francis Van Buren, who died in 1958.
Mrs. Carr was a housewife and homemaker. She had been a lifelong area resident, having lived in Milford Center for the past 40 years.
She was a graduate of Oneonta High School.
Mrs. Carr was an avid gardener, who took great pride in her landscape arrangements. She had previously been involved with area Girl Scout programs.
Mrs. Carr is survived by her five children, Richard F. and his wife, Kathy, Van Buren of Palenville, Pat and her husband, Stanley, Palmer of Richmondville, Carolyn and her husband, Jim, Smith of Richmondville, Ward Van Buren of Dorloo and Susan Carr of Schenectady; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Haskin of Vestal; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Charles, Kenneth and Gordon Haskin; and a sister, Bea Morgan.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judy Thistle, A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital chaplain, officiating. Burial will follow in the Milford Center Cemetery.
Friends may call two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Flora Bean
FORT PLAIN — Mrs. Flora Bean, 93, passed away Saturday, July 20, 2002, at the Folts Home, Herkimer.
She was born Dec. 6, 1908, in the town of Stark, the daughter of Charles and Cora (Smythe) Welden.
On Friday, Feb. 13, 1942, she married Daniel Bean. He predeceased her Aug. 3, 1994.
Mrs. Bean was a 1927 graduate of Cherry Valley High School, received her bachelors degree from Albany Teachers College in 1931, received her masters degree from Syracuse University in 1941. She did additional studies at Utica College and Syracuse University. She was a teacher from 1932-1965 in Ilion High School and one year in Oriskany Falls School.
For 18 years she and her husband operated the Sleepy Hollow Cottages in Richfield Springs.
Mrs. Bean was a member of the Albany State Teachers Alumni Association, Herkimer County Retired Teachers Association, and the New York State Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Bean's memory may be made to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 52, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
Graveside funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2002, in the Fort Plain Cemetery, Fort Plain.

Christina Cimko
ONEONTA — Christina Cimko, 77, of Oneonta, passed away after a lengthy illness Sunday, July 21, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
She was born June 11, 1925, in Maplewood, the daughter of Trieffon and Mary (Sewchuk) Sally.
She married John Cimko on Jan. 30, 1946. John died Dec. 30, 1988.
Christina was a housewife. She was a member of the Oneonta Assembly of God Church; Cee-Jay Golf Course. She worked as a nurses' aide. She enjoyed golfing, bowling and gardening.
Christina is survived by three sons, John and his wife, Chris Cimko of Burke, Va., Ronald Cimko of Cleveland, Ohio, and James and his wife, Barbara Cimko of Oneonta; brother, Steve Sally of Easley, S.C.; sisters, Julie Dinan of Albany and Nancy Janke of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Alexandra (Lexie) and Rebecca Cimko; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 25, 2002, at the Assembly of God Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. John Grunier, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Albany.
There will be no calling hours.

Charles A. Krieger
MARGARETVILLE — Charles A. Krieger, 95, of Margaretville, passed away Monday, July 22, 2002, at Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.
He was born Feb. 20, 1907, in Staten Island, the son of August Krieger and Mary Sharkey.
He was a former resident of Arkville before entering Mountainside Residential Care Center.
He is survived by two sisters, Marie Cavanagh and Alice Morisie; one brother, Fred Krieger; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held in New York City.
Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
Louise Tremper
MARGARETVILLE — Louise Tremper, 85, of Margaretville, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2002, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.
She was born Feb. 24, 1917, in Delhi, the daughter of Frank W. Dibble and Dora Wilcox.
She married Willis Robert Tremper on Aug. 26, 1944, in Andes. He died June 22, 1991.
She graduated from Hilton Memorial High School in Andes in 1934.
During World War II she worked at Scintilla in Sidney. She worked as a bookkeeper for Gladstone Brothers in Andes. She assisted her husband in the operation of a dairy farm on Dingle Hill in Andes. Louise and her husband operated the Trempers Country Store in Andes for 19 years. They retired in 1972.
She did volunteer work at the Thrift Shop in Margaretville. She enjoyed bowling and playing pinochle. She was a member of the Middletown Senior Citizens Club, serving as treasurer.
She is survived by one sister, Marian Spader, Catskill; one brother, Stanley Dibble, Hamden; one niece, Anita Marrano, Eden; three nephews, Stephen Dibble, Greene, Lewis Dibble, Delhi, and Roger Dibble, Hamden; and great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh, officiating.
Burial will be in Andes Cemetery in Andes.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
Contributions may be made in memory of Louise Tremper to the Ambulance Fund of Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

Susie M. Cornell
STAMFORD — Susie M. Cornell, 93, of Stamford, a former long-time Bloomville resident, passed away on Sunday morning, July 21, 2002, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.
The daughter of Ira L. and Lillian (Nesbitt) McIntosh, she was born May 23, 1909, at Roses Brook, South Kortright, and married John I. Cornell in 1928. He died May 3, 1963.
A Stamford resident for the past 20 years, Susie was a homemaker and, for a number of years, also did private-duty nursing in the Bloomville area where she lived most of her life. She was also active in the United Methodist Church, Grange, and the Tag-a-long Western Square Dance Club, Walton.
Surviving are a son, Ira A. "Ike" Cornell, North Fort Myers, Fla.; two daughters, Betty Clark Niemiller, Delhi, and Eve Bligh, Stamford; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Eva McIntosh, Bovina Center, and Virginia Cornell, Bloomville; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, LeeRoy Cornell (1971); and four brothers and three sisters.
Friends are invited to call on Thursday, July 25, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance 7 to 9 p.m., and funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Friday, by the Rev. Jeffrey Staples, with burial following in Valley View Cemetery, Roses Brook, South Kortright.
Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Ethel S. Tweedie
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Ethel S. Tweedie, 82, of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Margaretville, N.Y., passed away Monday, July 22, 2002, in Fort Myers, Fla.
She was born June 29, 1920, in Olyphant, Pa., the daughter of Isaac Smailes and Ethel Himm.
She married Roy Tweedie on Aug. 23, 1942, in the Primitive Methodist Church, Dickson City, Pa. He died Aug. 13, 1998.
She graduated from Dickson City High, Dickson City, Pa., in 1938, and from the Empire Beauty College in Scranton, Pa.
Ethel at one time was the owner of a beauty shop in Pennsylvania. She worked for New York Telephone Co. in Fleischmanns, N.Y., and for Dr. C.R. Huggins, Margaretville.
She lived in Walton, N.Y., from 1942-1952; in 1952 she moved to Margaretville; in 1973 she moved to Fort Myers, Fla.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Home Bureau, the Ceramic Club and the United Presbyterian Church, Margaretville.
Ethel is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna T. and Ivan L. Eignor, North Fort Myers, Fla., and Karen Tweedie Bouvier and W. Philip Bouvier, Fort Myers, Fla.; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald L. and Kathleen Tweedie, Margaretville, N.Y.; three grandsons, Kyle I. Eignor, Lakeland, Fla., Lloyd P. Bouvier and wife, Jane, Puyallup, Wash., and Ken D. Bouvier and wife, Christina, Livermore, Calif.; two granddaughters, Pamela S. Eignor, North Fort Myers, Fla., and Jessica Tweedie, Portland, Ore.; great-granddaughters, Kayla, Heather and Briana Bouvier, Puyallup, Wash.; great-grandson, Jarrett Bouvier, Livermore, Calif.; very special niece and family, Kimberly and Michael Sheffield, Hanford, Calif., and Erin and Ryan; two brothers, Thomas H. Smailes Sr., Moscow, Pa., and Arja Smailes, San Antonio, Texas; and one sister, Eileen Kucharski, Douglasville, Pa.
She was predeceased by one brother, Ray Smailes, who died in 1990.
Graveside and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2002, in the Annex of the Margaretville Cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra, officiating.
Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery Annex, Margaretville.

Shayne M. Hutzel
ONEONTA — Shayne M. Hutzel, 41, of Oneonta, passed away after a short illness Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
He was born Dec. 14, 1960, in Margaretville, the son of Wolfgang O. and Marcia (Beardsley) Hutzel.
Mr. Hutzel had been a heavy equipment operator for the Otsego County Highway Department until ill health forced his recent retirement.
He has been a life long area resident who enjoyed the outdoors and took great pride in his lawn and garden.
Shayne particularly enjoyed hunting and fishing and four-wheeling.
Shayne is survived by a daughter, Casey Hutzel of Oneonta; a brother, Shannon Hutzel of Oneonta; a special aunt, Deedee Kathman of Thompsons Station, Tenn.; a niece, Katy Hutzel of Oneonta; a close friend, Cindy Kinsella of Oneonta; aunts and uncles, Nina Johnson, Gloria Douglas, Gordon and Danny Beardsley; and several cousins.
He was predeceased by his mother and father on March 21, 1984.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2002, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judy Thistle, A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital chaplain, officiating.
Burial will be later at the convenience of the family in the Sand Hill Cemetery, Wells Bridge.

Peter Bickford
JORDANVILLE — Peter Bickford, age 77, born Oct. 26, 1924, passed away on Wednesday evening, July 24, 2002, in his home in Jordanville after a courageous battle with cancer. His brother and friend John Parker with whom he lived was with him throughout his illness and was present at his passing.
Peter was raised in California, was a successful lawyer in Beverly Hills, writer, teacher and artist.
He was best known locally as co-proprietor of Jonathan House Bed and Breakfast in Richfield Springs.

Katherine LaFleur
EDMESTON — Katherine LaFleur of Edmeston, died July 18, 2002, at the home of Alta and John VanVranken, where she had resided since 1999.
She was born on July 31, 1919, in Troy, the daughter of the late Leonard and Alice (Guile) LaFleur.
She was the much loved sister of Arthur LaFleur, Madeline Dorrington and Roderick LaFleur; sister-in-law of Shirley LaFleur; mother of Evelyn LaFleur and Betty LaFleur; and aunt of Carolyn, Arthur, Shirley and Janis.
She lived with her family for many years before moving to Edmeston in 1971 and residing with the family of Charles Sr. and Jennie Gelatt and then with the family of Charles Jr. and Grace Gelatt before moving to the VanVrankens.
She attended the Edmeston Day Hab program and enjoyed doing crafts, going on outings and socializing with her many friends, whom she loved dearly.
Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. They visited often and she treasured the time she spent with her sister-in-law and nieces and nephew. Being such an important part of her life showed that they were a faithful and loving family, who will miss her greatly.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jay R. Henderson, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Burlington Flats Cemetery.
Arrangements were provided by the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford.
Chester Thorington
GRAND GORGE — Chester G. Thorington, 95, died peacefully Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2002, at the Grand Gorge United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Nash officiating.

Robert R. Searles
ONEONTA — Robert Rae Searles, 84, of Oneonta, died at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital on Monday, July 22, 2002, after a valiant battle with prostate cancer.
He was born on March 2, 1918, the son of Magdalena Mae (Dougherty) and Ralph King Searles, in Oneonta.
Mr. Searles served his country during World War II in the European Theater with the anti-aircraft division of the United States Army. In addition to other medals and commendations, he was the recipient of the Bronze Star.
Upon his return to this area, he was a devoted caregiver for his parents and grandparents until their respective deaths. He was a third-generation gardener and was known among friends as, "The West End Historian."
He was self-employed as the owner and operator of The Tropical Fish Shop in the West End. Countless children and their families delighted in shopping for their pets and learning how best to care for them under Bob's guidance.
Bob was a man of very many and varied interests and hobbies. Among them were woodcarving, photography, houseplants, the out-of-doors, music and many sports. He was a consummate bibliophile, as his large library indicates.
He was a creative, gifted and loving man and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his sister, Pauline Davidson; five nieces and nephews, Nicole Searles Argetsinger (Robert), Christyne Anne Joslyn Zimmer, Dale Robert Joslyn (Drusilla), Portia Lorraine Joslyn Worth (David) and Jeffrey Michael Davidson (Anne Marie). Many loving grandnieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews also will miss him.
He is also survived by his very dear friends Lynn and Helen Bissell and their sons, Jeffrey and Daniel; Nelson Short; Betty Haney; Beth Scutt; and Brad Smith. Bob's family is deeply indebted to them for their loving care and friendship for Bob over the years and during his last illness.
A word of appreciation is extended to Doctors Egal, Ali and Falco, the nursing staff at A.O. Fox and the cancer care team, as well as the folks of At Home Care. "You are all special to us for the care you gave to Bob. We loved him very much he was truly a charming man."
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 29, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, at 357 Main St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating.
Burial with military honors will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
The family will be present at the funeral home on Sunday, July 28, from 2 to 5 p.m. for those who wish to call.
