Hugh K. Rose

HARPURSVILLE — Hugh K. Rose, 72, of Harpursville, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at his daughter's home in Staunton, Va., following a short illness.

He was predeceased by his wife, Catharine W. Rose, on Oct. 1, 2001.

He is survived by a son, Scott, Boston of Massachusetts; a son, Jonathan and daughter-in-law, Justine Beek Rose of Strasburg, Va.; a daughter, Mary Kay Rose of Staunton, Va.; one granddaughter, Marie-Elisabeth Rose of Cortland; one grandson, Malcolm Beck Rose of Strasburg, Va.; a sister, Mary Lake of Hilton; a sister and brother-in-law, Anne and John Knight of Interlaken; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Floyd Many of Hobart; a sister, Evangeline Gerandino of Grand Gorge; and many nieces and nephews.

Hugh was an inspiration to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Born July 23, 1929, in South Kortright, to Ralph Rose and May Gates Rose.

Hugh began his life working hard on the family farm. He often spoke respectfully and humbly of the long hours and hard labor he endured with his father, whom he greatly respected and admired. It was probably here that Hugh developed his deep relationship with and love for nature.

Hugh loved the farm, but language was a second love. He spoke of his difficulty deciding whether to stay and work the farm or pursue his love of language.

He often shared the story of the day he came home from Muskingum College where he completed his undergraduate studies and shared a book of reflections he had written, inspired by Robert Frost, with his father. His father was so moved, that in spite of his desire to have his son remain on the farm, he encouraged his further study.

Hugh attended and graduated from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. It was here he met his lifelong partner, Catharine W. Rose. The two shared a profound love, expressing that love as a team, in both their family and professional lives.

In addition to his other studies, Hugh enjoyed course work and experiential training in counseling. While he was close to earning his Ph.D., Hugh discontinued his formal studies and chose to dedicate his energy to his family life instead.

His life was dedicated to service, both personally and professionally.

Turning down an opportunity to teach at the college level, Hugh chose to express this service professionally as a minister. As a minister, Hugh had the opportunity to share people's lives in deeply meaningful ways. This was very important to him.

He served multiple churches, in both  Pennsylvania and New York. Receiving the honor of pastor emeritus from the Cortland United Presbyterian Church, where he served for 18 years, demonstrates the love he shared with his church family.

Hugh was known and loved for so many things; his sense of wonder and excitement about life, his love for the natural world, his passion for language, his deep honoring of the mystery of life and human experience, his unusually sensitive nature and his deep compassion. His gentle, sweet spirit and unfailing kindness attracted people to him and those who met him loved him.

Visiting hours will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, 2002, at the Nineveh Presbyterian Church on Route 7 in Nineveh.

A memorial service will be held at the church at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 15, with the Rev. Douglas Horne officiating.

People who may be interested are encouraged to write a "letter to Hugh" that may be shared at the service.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Nineveh Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 115, Nineveh, NY 13813.

Margaret Gilligan

FRANKLIN — Margaret F. Gilligan, of Croton-on-Hudson and Franklin, died Friday, July 12, 2002, at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow.

She was born in New York City on May 18, 1920, to Gabriel and Margaret Rooney Valenzuela, and lived in the Croton/Hudson area most of her life.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Thomas John Gilligan, of Croton and Franklin; a son, Thomas James Gilligan and his fiancι, Claire McCarthy of Rye Brook; daughter, Margaret Ann Gilligan-Isom of Las Vegas, Nev.; granddaughter, Judith Ann Gilligan and grandson Thomas James Gilligan of Endwell and his wife, Carol; and great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Thomas. Also surviving is the mother of her grandchildren, Mary Achando-Gilligan of Croton; her brother and sister-in-law, Gabriel and Svea Valenzuela of Somers; niece, Gail; nephews, Gabriel and Charles; and several grand-nieces and nephews. In addition, she is survived by local in-laws Betty and Bob Gilligan, Margaret Riel and Anna and Jim Pettit of Binghamton and their families.

Margaret worked in the '50s at Cambridge Instruments in Ossining. She was a volunteer aide at the Sisters of the Sick Poor in Ossining. She was always very creative and artistic, enjoyed baking, canning, putting up preserves, gardening, sewing, fishing and extensive traveling.

She began in the '70s a hobby of spinning and weaving wool, which became a trademark of hers. She introduced weaving in the rehabilitation area of the Craig House in Beacon and successfully rehabilitated a number of residents there. She took her spinning and weaving show, "Sheep to Shawl," on the road and gave demonstrations in Van Cortland Manor House, in local schools and at Pace College.

She and Tom opened Gill-Vale Ceramics on Brook Street and worked with many locals, teaching them the art of molding, firing and painting ceramics.

Margaret and Tom retired to Franklin, where she did not stay retired for long. They opened a gently used, children's clothing shop "Just '4 Kids" and the Franklin Emporium Consignment Shop, and worked with and befriended the people from Franklin for the next 20 years. They actually retired five years ago.

She was a member of Holy Name of Mary Church in Croton and the Roman Catholic Community of Franklin.

Margaret was a force to be reckoned with. She had unending energy and was always thinking of new creative things to do. She was a good wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many. She will be sorely missed.

Calling hours are Sunday, July 14, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, Croton and a Funeral Mass will be held Monday, July 15, at 10 a.m. at Holy Name of Mary Roman Catholic Church, Croton.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Heart, Kidney or Diabetes foundations or the charity of one's choice in her memory.
