Charles Mogridge

HAMDEN — Charles A. Mogridge, a lifelong Hamden resident, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Fox Hospital Nursing Home in Oneonta. He was 87.

Mr. Mogridge worked as a cheese maker for Dellwood Farms in Hamden (from 1941 to 1964) and Fraser (1964 to 1976), retiring in 1976, after 35 years with the company.

Charles Mogridge was born on Oct. 14, 1914, in Delhi, to Nathan and Verna Flipse Mogridge.

He was educated in Delhi and graduated from Delaware Academy. He earned an agricultural degree from the State University College of Technology at Delhi in 1933.

On Aug. 28, 1939, he married Jessie VanBuren in Walton. She predeceased him in 1990.

He loved to travel. His favorite places were Alaska and British Columbia. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and staying at his camp in the Adirondacks.

He was a member of the Hamden Fish and Game Club and the Hamden Presbyterian Church.

Charles Mogridge is survived by his children, Marianne Hasson, Charles Mogridge and Sharon Mogridge; and two grandchildren, James Augustine and Justin Simmons.

Besides his wife; he was predeceased by a sister, Louise Birdsall.

The family will receive friends at the Hamden Presbyterian Church from noon until the service time at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2002, with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Burial will be in the Hamden Cemetery.

Donations to the Hamden Presbyterian Church in his name would be appreciated.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, Walton.

Esther Littlejohn

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Esther M. Littlejohn, age 89, of Cary Park Road, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, June 30, 2002, in Valley Health Services Inc., Herkimer.

She was born on Dec. 18, 1912, in Deposit, daughter of the late Charles and Martha Lord Linkroum.

Esther was raised in Deposit and graduated from Deposit High School.

In 1932, she married Ernest Littlejohn in Newburgh. Mrs. Littlejohn's life was devoted to her family and home.

In her leisure time, she would crochet or enjoy the challenge of a good crossword puzzle.

She will be greatly missed by her friends and family.

Surviving are her husband of 70 years, Ernest; three daughters, Kathryn Senko and her husband, Andrew, of Richfield Springs, Margaret Stead and her husband, Philip, of Underhill Center, Vt., and Elizabeth Littlejohn of Bailey,  Colo.; one brother, Theron Linkroum of Bridgewater, N.J.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents, seven brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 5, 2002, in the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. William Harkins, pastor, officiating.

The family will be present in the church one hour prior to the memorial service to receive relatives and friends on Friday.

Committal services in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Deposit, will take place at a time convenient to the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Carla J. Stebbins

BUTTERNUTS — Carla Jane Stebbins, 36, of the town of Butternuts, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, as a result of a motor vehicle accident.

She was born July 6, 1965, in Oneonta, the daughter of George Fitch and Jean (Stensland) Fitch.

She married B. Jay Stebbins in Plymouth, on Jan. 1, 1996.

She was employed as a machine operator and assembler at the Burt Rigid Box Inc. of Oneonta.

She enjoyed gardening and her family and friends.

Carla is survived by her husband, B. Jay Stebbins, of Gilbertsville; her sons, Levi Turner Stebbins and Benjamin Jessie Stebbins, both at home; her mother, Jean Stebbins of Gilbertsville; a brother, Robert Fitch and his fiancee, Amy Johnson; several aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces; and her extended family at Burt Rigid Box; and a special friend, Joannie.

Her father, George Fitch, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 5, 2002, at the Gilbertsville Baptist Church in Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Randolph Palada and the Rev. Scott Harding officiating.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Burial and committal services will be in the Butternuts Valley (Copes Corners) Cemetery in the town of Butternuts.

Friends are invited back to B. Jay Stebbins' home following the services.

Claudine M. Fields

BINGHAMTON — Claudine M. Fields, 84 years, of Binghamton and Port Orange, Fla., and formerly of Oneonta, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton.

She was born July 26, 1917, in Morris, the daughter of Hugh and Lillian (Weatherly) McKnight.

She married Harry Fields Sr. on Aug. 20, 1936, in West Laurens.

She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Harry Fields Sr.; her five children and their spouses, Barbara and Don Tripp, Bette and Dick Utter, Harry and Pat Fields Jr., Joyce and Scott Haight and Ginny Spry; 23 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; her sister and her husband, Hazel and Lloyd Geisler; two sisters-in-law, Frances Beagle and Evelene Sheldon; and one brother-in-law, Cecil and Liz Field; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Claudine was predeceased by her daughter, Beverly Henry.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

The family will be present at the funeral home from noon until service time on Wednesday, for those who wish to call.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of one's choice in loving memory of Claudine M. Fields.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Rose Laura Haney

MILFORD — Mrs. Rose Laura Haney, 93, passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2002.

She was born on Nov. 16, 1908, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Hodge) Thayer, on their Dutch Hill Farm in Milford.

She attended school there and later graduated from high school in Cooperstown. Rose later graduated from St. John's Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, where she then worked for several years before returning to the Oneonta area. Rose worked as a registered nurse at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta for many years until her retirement in 1971.

For many years, she enjoyed the family camp on the Susquehanna River with family and friends.

She was an avid reader and also enjoyed traveling very much.

Rose was predeceased by her husband, Marvin Haney, in 1970; a sister, Dorothy Elwell Pake of Goodyear Lake; and by one brother, Glen Chapin of West Oneonta.

Surviving are one sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Danny Tolomei of Detroit, Mich.; a brother, Charles Quick of Binghamton; a son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Irene Haney of Milford; two nephews, Lee and wife, Carolyn Elwell of Goodyear Lake and Gene Elwell of Goodyear Lake.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Henry W. Lyall

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — Henry W. Lyall, 71, of Boynton Beach, Fla., died on Wednesday afternoon, June 26, 2002.

Mr. Lyall had been a longtime resident of Boynton Beach, coming from Oneonta. He retired as the district manager of the Social Security Administration in Oneonta.

Mr. Lyall is predeceased by his beloved son, John Lyall.

He is survived by his loving wife, Catherine Murray Lyall of Boynton Beach, Fla.; one daughter, Anne Dutcher (Norman) of Albany; one son, James Lyall (Victoria) of Oneonta; and by his mother, Margaret Lyall of Oneonta; five grandchildren, Maryanne Dutcher, John Dutcher, Elizabeth Dutcher, Robert Lyall and Grace Lyall; and three brothers, John Lyall (Patricia), James Lyall (Barbara) and Kevin Lyall. Many other friends and family members will miss him greatly.

A memorial Mass was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 1, at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Boynton Beach, Fla. A second memorial Mass will also be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman officiating.

Hannah Lee Stokes

COOPERSTOWN — Committal services for Hannah Lee Stokes, who died Dec. 6, 2001, will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 5, 2002, at Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Kenneth Chichester

STAMFORD — Kenneth A. Chichester, 81, went to be with his Lord on Monday, July 1, 2002, after a long struggle with poor health.

He was born on Sept. 28, 1920, in Hauversville, the oldest son of Cleo and Emily (Lewis) Chichester.

Ken graduated from Middleburgh Central School, Class of 1941, and attended the State University College at Fredonia, majoring in music. He took courses at Cornell University and the State University College at Oneonta.

He met his wife, Christina Strong, the first day of college.

He enlisted in the Army Air Force, transferred to the 513th Air Force Band, stationed at Keesler Field, Biloxi, Miss., where he and Chris were married Oct. 31, 1943, and would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. He saw service in England and was discharged in 1946.

Ken has held various types of work, from New York State apiary inspector, to DHI milk inspector, to dairy, horse and cauliflower farming, as distributor at Scintilla, and, lastly, bus driver at Stamford Central School for 30 years where he also served as a substitute teacher, "gofer" for his wife, and friend and defender of all "his kids."

Ken was choir director in every village or city where he and his family lived. In First Baptist Church, Biloxi, then Middleburgh, Otego and Stamford United Methodist Churches. He was choir director in Stamford for 39 years until failing health made it impossible.

He had led the Area Ecumenical Choir for at least 15 years, giving Cantatas at Christmas and Easter gathering those who loved to sing or play an instrument from the area communities. He also began the U.M. Handbell Choir, taken over by his wife and now under the direction of Claudia Bell.

Ken and his family were very involved in the raising and showing of horses, mostly Morgans. Ken with the County 4-H agents started the First 4-H Horse Club in New York State. His emphasis in riding or showing horses was good sportsmanship, first and foremost.

Over the years Ken held many positions in the church and was always on call to help with whatever needed to be accomplished.

With his wife he was instrumental in beginning the Area 13 Special Olympics (Delaware, Otsego and Chenango Counties), the State and National Special Olympics. Ken always volunteered to drive the school bus filled with happy athletes to the events with the kindness and understanding of the late Jack Siring and then Dick Little. Other schools also offered their buses but S.C.S. was tops.

With his family, his church activities, his horses, the special Olympics Ken was continually helping with his heart as big as gold.

Ken belonged to the Stamford United Methodist Church, the V.F.W. and to the Northeastern Jurisdiction Fellowship of Music, Worship and other Arts.

Ken is survived by his wife; his children, Ken Jr. "Skip" and Lucy Chichester, Michael and Linda Chichester, Gary and Sharon Chichester, Susan and Peter Powell; and grandchildren, Shannon and Roger Smith, Peter II and Heather Simmonds Powell, Christopher, Morgan and Brianne Chichester; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Michael R., Megan, Zachery, Casey, Austin, Sheridan and Chezney Ann. The Chichesters raised and loved nine other children, including four that they had custody of Ronald (Betty) Dzikowski, Ernest (Sarah) Dzikowski, Madeline (Robert) Heisler and David Dzikowski, staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, killed in 1976.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2002, at the Stamford United Methodist Church, Stamford, with the Rev. Lawrence Charles officiating.

Calling hours will take place from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 5, 2002, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will be at Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Stamford United Methodist Church, Catskill Area Hospice or the Stamford Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Linda Vredenburgh

BAINBRIDGE — Linda Matteson Vredenburgh, 62, of Bainbridge, went home to be with her Lord peacefully on Monday, July 1, 2002, following her second battle with cancer. Her loyal and loving family surrounded her.

She is survived by her husband, Lauren "Larry" Vredenburgh, of Bainbridge, whom she married in May of 1977; two daughters, Lisa Ann Wynn and her fiance, Frank Mazzo Jr. of South Hamilton, and Julie K. Ouimet of Unadilla; and a son, Patrick B.  Jones and his wife, Michelle of Atlanta, Ga.; three granddaughters, Rachel O. Cole and her husband, Michael of Clayton, N.C., Jessica H. Ouimet of Unadilla and Danielle E. Knochenmus of South Hamilton. She is also survived by two sisters and their husbands, Karen J. and Bruce Powrie of South Lebanon, and Brenda J. and Mark Hendricks of Lindon, Utah; as well as two brothers, Barry P. Matteson of North Norwich and Robert L. Matteson and his wife, Deborah of Smyrna; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by her beloved parents and first-born nephew, Brian Kenneth Matteson.

Mrs. Vredenburgh was born in Norwich on Oct. 26, 1939, the first daughter of Kenneth and Julia (Powell) Matteson.

She attended school at the Ward School on Cortland before graduating from Sherburne High School as the valedictorian in 1957. She entered college with four scholarships at the State University College at Oneonta that September.

On June 1, 1959, she married Ray E.  Jones of North Norwich at the Sherburne United Methodist Church.

Linda earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from SUCO in the field of elementary education. She taught sixth grade at Perry Browne Elementary School in Norwich for nine years, resigning in 1978, when she moved to Bainbridge.

Most recently, she was employed by the Bainbridge Greenlawn Cemetery Association as superintendent, secretary and treasurer until ill health forced her retirement.

She was a member of the Bainbridge Women's Club and had served as their chaplain for many years. Linda chaired the Good Citizen of the Year Committee for the Bainbridge-Afton Chapter of NSDAR and was a past Regent as well.

A regular communicant of the Bainbridge First Baptist Church, she found much joy in her deep faith in God and was a member of various interdenominational prayer groups, prayer lines and Bible study groups over the years. A member of Women's AGLOW Chapter in Greene, she served as the group's secretary when the group was first chartered.

Linda had a deep love and compassion for animals and was a faithful contributor to various humane societies both locally and nationally.

Friends are invited to call at the Devine-Wilson Memorial Home, 68 South Broad St., in Norwich, from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2002.

A memorial service for Mrs. Vredenburgh will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, July 5, 2002, at the First Baptist Church of Bainbridge.

Burial will take place in North Norwich Cemetery.

Memorial gifts in memory of Linda may be made to two charities that were dear to her heart: The Central Delaware County Humane Society, P.O. Box 88, Delhi, NY 13857 or to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 E. Main St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Caring for her own deeply loved pets and helping to educate others pet owners in humane, responsible care has been a lifetime commitment.

Many articles were written to area newspapers over the years and various kinds of aid were given to pets in need, both near and far. Her devotion and compassion for animals and human beings will be long remembered. Her "four-legged friends," family and human friends will never forget her.

The arrangements are under the direction of the Devine-Wilson Memorial Home of Norwich.

Albert F. Hoyt

OTEGO — Albert F. Hoyt, 96, most recently of Roseboom and formerly of Otego, passed away Monday, July 1, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born March 24, 1906, in Otego, the son of Burton and Blanche (Ford) Hoyt.

He married Wilhelmina Bard in Otego in 1929. She predeceased him in 1977.

He graduated from Otego High School the Class of 1923, and then from the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill in 1927.

Albert lived his entire life on the family farm, Southside, Otego, until he was 80 years old. Since then, he has made his home in Roseboom with his daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Warren Stannard.

He was a member of the Otego Susquehanna Valley Grange for 80 plus years. He was also a member of the Otego United Methodist Church for 81 years during which time he held many offices in the church. Albert was also a member of the Farm Bureau, Cooperative Extension, the O-H-M Club and the Oneonta Camp of Gideons.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Warren Stannard of Roseboom; one brother, Brayton Hoyt of Peveley, Mo.; a granddaughter, Julie Stannard of Roseboom; two nieces, Joan Martin of Pensacola, Fla., and Lola West of Peveley, Mo.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2002, in the Otego United Methodist Church, Church Street, Otego, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday evening at the Bookhout Funeral Home, River Street, Otego, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Otego United Methodist Church, Church Street, Otego, NY 13825.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.
