Herbert Garman Jr.
UNADILLA — Herbert B. Garman Jr., 54, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare after a courageous battle with lymphoma, with his many family and friends by his side.
He was born July 21, 1947, in Newburgh, N.Y., the son of Herbert B. and Joan (Johnson) Garman Sr.
Herb married Marilyn Timer on Aug. 15, 1981, at the Lutheran Church of the Atonement in Oneonta.
Herb was a man of many interests and talents. He was an instrumental music teacher for 33 years at Milford Central School, where he was involved in jazz band, marching band, concert band and the junior prep band. He was active in various all-county ensembles.
In March, the Performing Arts Center at Milford Central School was dedicated in his honor. At the old Milford school building, Herb used to write and direct his own musicals and dinner theaters. He would have the kids cooking spaghetti and serving the dinners on roller skates. He was instrumental in bringing the theater to the new school and continued his participation in the musical productions.
Also known as "Mr. Computer," Herb helped initiate getting computers installed at the school and taught computer classes to children as well as to adults. He loved working with children and inspired them and many others to strive for their best.
He enjoyed woodworking, traveling, reading, spending time at his home out in the country with a wonderful view of the valley or participating in and watching sports. His favorites were softball and soccer. He also was the timekeeper at Milford Central.
Most of all, he loved spending time in his studio at home, whether it be playing his music or being on the computer or talking with friends. Herb was a member of the Otsego County Music Educators Association and he participated in the Cooperstown Community Band and the Oneonta Community Band. He was president of the Otsego County Music Educators Association as well as president of the Milford Teachers Association on numerous occasions. Herb touched many lives; he was loved deeply and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Marilyn Garman of Unadilla; his father, Herbert B. Garman Sr., and his wife, Frieda, of Washingtonville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Marcy Garman of New Haven, Conn., and Jean and Glenn Weston of Salisbury Mills; one brother, Jim Garman of Washington D.C.; his father and mother-in-law, Albert and Emily Timer Sr. of Laurens; two sisters-in-law, Betty and Les Burgess of Mount Vision and Mary Timer of Oneonta; three brothers-in-law, Albert and Lee Timer Jr. of Fowlerville, Mich., John and Penny Timer of Mount Vision and James and Lisa Timer of Schenevus; nieces and nephews, Sarah Garman, Carrie Scheeler, Ericka Axelsson, Elizabeth Cornelius, Anna Weston, Mallory Weston, Jen Timer, Crystal Timer, Joshua Timer, Adam Burgess, Zachary Dobler and Travis Timer; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and his companion while he was sick, his cat named Sneakers.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, July 2, at 10 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Atonement in Oneonta.
Burial will follow at the Laurens Cemetery.
The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, at 357 Main St. in Oneonta from 7 to 9 p.m. today for those who wish to call.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to either the Milford Central School Music Program, 42 West Main St., Milford, NY 13807 or to the Lymphoma Research Foundation, 111 Broadway (19th Floor), New York, NY 10006 in loving memory of Herbert B. Garman Jr.

Agnes B. Matthews
ANDES — Agnes B. Matthews, 102, Andes' oldest resident, passed away on Friday evening, June 28, 2002, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi.
Born Dec. 26, 1899, in Downsville, the daughter of Herman and Melissa (Knox) Bogart, she married Gordon B. Matthews on Dec. 13, 1924. He died Aug. 18, 1986.
A homemaker most of her life, Mrs. Matthews served as Andes town clerk for 12 years and, subsequently, was employed in the cafeteria at Andes Central School.
Active in the Andes community for many years, Agnes was a member of the United Methodist Church and its women's circle, where she will be remembered for contributions in the form of her baking expertise; the James D. Calhoun Unit 200, American Legion Auxiliary; and the Board of Elections.
An Andes resident since 1926, Agnes lived independently in her Main Street home until the age of 101, when her health weakened and she became a resident of "Countryside" in Delhi.
Surviving are her daughter, Vera Matthews of Andes; a granddaughter, Lisa J. Rowe and her husband, Klaus Meinnsen, of Asheville, N.C.; a granddaughter-in-law, Brenda Rowe; and a great-grandson, Michael Rowe, both of Delhi; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Harrison Bogart of Downsville and Mrs. Cecil Matthews of Oneonta; three stepgranddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Gordon P. Rowe (1998) and a stepson, G. Duane Matthews (2002).
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today at the Andes United Methodist Church, where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Martha Vink, and burial will follow in the Andes Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to the Andes United Methodist Church Memorial Fund will be appreciated.

Timothy S. Marmet
OTEGO — Timothy S. Marmet, 44, of Otsdawa Road in Otego passed away Thursday, June 27, 2002, unexpectedly at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
He was born Aug. 5, 1957, in Ilion, the son of Walt Marmet and Roseann (Ward) Marmet.
He was a graduate of Oneonta High School.
He was employed as an auto body technician at One Stop Auto in Oneonta.
He loved restoring cars. His favorite 1957 Willys was seen on the front page of The Daily Star on June 14, 2000.
He enjoyed softball, hunting, crosswords and sailing in the British Virgin Islands.
His spare time earned him the nickname "Tooltime Tim," for helping many people with every type of repair. Everyone who knew him benefited from his ability to tackle any project.
Tim touched many lives and will be greatly missed.
Tim is survived by his fiancee, Nadine Johansen of Otego; his two sons, Nic Marmet and Robert Marmet, both of Florida; as well as Nadine's daughters, Christine, Heather and Rebecca; three brothers, Jerry and spouse, Suellen Marmet, of Oneonta, Michael and spouse, Diane Marmet, of Laurens, and Craig Marmet of Oneonta; and his favorite sister, Deb (Marmet) Hecox of Oneonta; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He is also survived by a halfbrother and sister, Roger and Michelle.
He was predeceased by his parents, Roseann (Ward) Marmet and Walt Marmet; also his grandmother, Nellie Ward; and his nephew, Shane Marmet.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today, July 1, 2002, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., in Oneonta with the Rev. Judy Thistle, A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital chaplain, officiating.
Calling hours were held at the funeral home on Sunday evening.
Final resting place will be in Springfield Cemetery, Springfield Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association, Laurens Emergency Squad or the Laurens Recreation Center would be appreciated.
Franklyn E. Jones
STAMFORD — Franklyn E. Jones, born Oct. 14, 1923, in Grand Gorge, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2002.He was the son of Inez and Frank Jones
He is survived by his wife, Ann M. Jones; his children, Richard N. Jones of Oneonta, Liz Bjellquist and husband, Dennis, of Rockaway, N.J., and Janet Herrick and husband, Jack, of Binghamton; five grandchildren, Richard F. Jones, Michael W. Jones, Caitlin, Jenna and Kenny Bjellquist; as well as a niece and two nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Dorothy Murphy.
Frank was a member of the Earl B. Dudley American Legion Post and the V.F.W. of Stamford.
He was a former member of the Stamford Golf Association.
Frank owned and operated the distributorship of Texaco Petroleum Products for many years in the Grand Gorge area.
In later years, Frank became the director of the Delaware County Solid Waste Management Program.
The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. today, July 1, 2002, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, in Stamford.
Interment will follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Hospice Compassionate Care, 66 Mt. Prospect Ave., Building C, Clifton, N.J. 07013.

Patricia Pangman
COBLESKILL — Patricia A. Pangman, 62, of Barnerville Road in Cobleskill, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after a brief illness.
She was born April 17, 1940, in Cobleskill, the daughter of Leonard and Gertrude King Mickel. She was a lifelong resident.
She was married on Sept. 13, 1958, in Central Bridge to Edward F. Pangman.
She had been a self-employed beautician, homemaker and was a co-owner of the Empire Restaurant in Howes Cave.
Survivors are her husband, Edward F., of Cobleskill; two sons, Kip Pangman of Middleburgh and Kyle Pangman of Warnerville; a sister, Sylvia Snyder of Cobleskill; and three grandchildren, Cheyenne, Kelsey and Katie Pangman.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 108 Chapel St., in Cobleskill with the Rev. Scott Thompson officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the Bramanville Cemetery, town of Cobleskill.
Memorials to the Bramanville Prospect Cemetery, care of Merrill Tilison, Howes Cave, NY 12092 or to the Schoharie County Animal Shelter, Howes Cave, will be appreciated.
Granger W. Smith
ZEBULON, N.C. — A graveside service for Granger W. Smith, 50, formerly of this area, who passed away on March 16, 2002, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley, N.Y.
Refreshments and visitation at the Cherry Valley Episcopal Church will follow the service.

Francis E. Shultis
MEREDITH — Francis E. Shultis, 74, of Meredith, died at home on Sunday, June 30, 2002.
He was born July 31, 1927, in Andes, the son of Leland and Inez (Edwards) Shultis.
He married Alberta Catherine Townsend in New Kingston. She passed away in September 1991.
Mr. Shultis worked for for New York City Tunnel System on the Upper Dams in Delaware County and retired after 25 years as a machinist at DelMet in Walton.
He especially enjoyed snowmobiling, car racing and classic car shows.
Four sons, Gary Shultis of Sidney, Roger Shultis of Walton, Jerry R. and Joanne Shultis of Meredith, and Patrick and Eileen Shultis of Oneonta; a daughter, Frances Jean and James Clark of Delhi; six grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Shultis and Linn Shultis, both of Margaretville; two sisters, Lois Davis of Middleburgh and Evelyn Burnett of Washingtonville; and several nieces and nephews survive him.
His wife, Alberta; and a brother, Leland Shultis predeceased him.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Pine Grove Cemetery in Meridale with the Rev. Bert More officiating.
There will be no calling hours.

Donald Borthwick
CHIEFLAND, Fla. — Donald E. Borthwick, 68, of Chiefland, Fla., and formerly of Harpursville, N.Y., passed away Friday, June 28, 2002, in Oakview Rehab and Care Center, Williston, Fla.
He was born July 20, 1933, in Unadilla, N.Y., the son of Clifford and Gladys (Mason) Borthwick.
He was married to Beverley Graves on May 17, 1958, in Smyrna, N.Y.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955.
Donald had been a resident of Chiefland, Fla., for the last 12 years and was a former resident of Harpursville, N.Y.
He was a former employee of Alliance Dairies of Trenton, Fla.
He is survived by his wife, Beverley Borthwick, of Guilford, N.Y.; his adopted son, Bryan Young of Denver, Colo.; his sisters and a brother-in-law, Charlotte Owens of Harpursville, N.Y., and Shirley and David Hubbard of Guilford, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Owens; and his brothers, Paul and Raymond Borthwick.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., in Unadilla with the Rev. Mary Ann Linder, pastor of the Guilford United Methodist Church, officiating.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at the funeral home, when the family will be in attendance.
Interment will be in Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin, N.Y.

Joseph E. Castle
UNADILLA — Joseph E. Castle of 754 State Highway 7, Unadilla, passed away on June 28, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.
Mr. Castle was born on May 4, 1916, in Sidney, the son of Roger Thomas and Myrtle (Hotaling) Castle. As a small boy, he lived in the surrounding area and worked for local farmers when not in school.
He graduated from Margaretville High School, Class of 1935. While in high school, he was captain of the soccer team, and lettered in basketball, baseball and soccer. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping and was very active playing baseball until entering the U.S. Army.
At the age of 21, he returned to Sidney and worked for Frank Lewis and Sons. He helped dismantle the Hatfield Car factory, and assisted with the building of Scintilla, The Hospital and homes for Sears and Roebuck. He also worked for Scintilla as a guard and the Village of Sidney police.
On Oct. 3, 1942, he married Lillian M. Page in Torrington, Conn. They shared 45 years of marriage.
In August of 1940, he entered the U.S. Army. He was an Army Artillery Sgt. and taught the use of arms and ammunition, the setting of mines and booby traps and how to use all types of gas. He served in the Pacific Theatre where he saw combat in the Philippines, the Palau Island Group and also did mop-up operations in Guadalcanal. He went to Japan with the first troops to land on Japan. After spending 30 days in a hospital, he was released and returned by ship to the state of Washington and then to Fort Dix, N.J., where he was honorably discharged on Dec. 11, 1945.
Mr. Castle returned to the Torrington, Conn., area and later to the New Milford, Conn., area where he worked for several years as a carpenter, carpenter foreman and a contractor in the building trades. During this time, he was also appointed and later elected as a conservation and police officer in New Milford. He held this position for 33 years.
In 1997, the Connecticut Conservation Officers Association of Haddam, Conn., awarded Mr. Castle with an honorary membership for his many years of dedicated service to conservation law enforcement.
He was a member of the American Legion No. 183 in Sidney, the Advent Christian Church in Torrington, Conn., since 1942, and was an associate member of the Gaylordsville Methodist Church.
Mr. Castle is survived by his daughter, Joyce and her husband, Gregg Patterson of New Milford, Conn.; two sons, Joseph H. and his wife, Barbara Castle of Baltimore, Md., and Edward and his wife, Karen Castle of New Milford, Conn.; his sister, Anna Rieman of Starlight, Pa.; his brother, Louis Castle of Afton; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; his good friend, Rose Castle; and his special friends, Diana, Tom, Amy, Vern, Pat, Andy and Paul.
He was predeceased by his wife, Lillian.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on July 2, 2002, at the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Route 7, Otego, with the Rev. Paul Hibbard of Gaylordsville, Conn., officiating.
Funeral arrangements are by the Joyce Funeral Home, Inc. of Unadilla.
James D. O'Rourke
TREADWELL — James D. "Jim" O'Rourke, 77, of Treadwell, passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2002, at the home of his daughter, also in Treadwell.
The son of Sinon F. and Grace M. ( White) O'Rourke, he was born Nov. 8, 1924, in Gering, Neb., was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, serving as a radio operator in the Pacific, and married Maxine Glebe in 1948, in Scotts Bluff, Neb.
A former 47-year resident of Amherst, Dr. O'Rourke served as dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, and, subsequently as professor of analytical chemistry at SUNY-Buffalo, having done his undergraduate studies at the University of Nebraska, later receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.
Following retirement in 1977, he was extensively involved with woodcarving, computer programming and investments.
Before moving to Treadwell earlier this year, he was quite active with the Amherst Senior Citizens, and will be remembered by his family and friends for his sense of humor and optimism.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Maxine O'Rourke; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and George Thompson, Treadwell; two grandchildren, Kali and Gavin; two brothers, Jerrold O'Rourke, Warner Robins, Ga., and Bill O'Rourke, Fort Myers, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to attend services at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 7, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Lyle Linder officiating.
There are no calling hours; however, the family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, or The Nature Conservancy, 1019 Leavenworth St., Omaha, NE 68102.
