Luella S. Gaylord
EAST SYRACUSE — Luella S. Gaylord, 84, of East Syracuse, formerly of Oneonta, died March 15, 2002.
Born in Otego, she moved to Syracuse in 1979.
She was the widow of the late Robert Gaylord, who died in 1980.
She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Schnitzler of Cazenovia and Kathleen Reese of Quincy, Mass.; a brother, George Starr of Cooperstown; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2002, in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

Norean DiTito
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside committal service for Norean DiTito, 44, of Furman Road in Richfield Springs, who passed away on Feb. 10, 2002, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2002, in Saint Joseph's Cemetery in Richfield Springs. Sister Patricia Woolheater will officiate.

Evelyn May Fuller
HERKIMER — A graveside committal service for Evelyn May Fuller, 65, of Herkimer, formerly of Richfield Springs, who passed away on March 2, 2002, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2002, in the Burlington Flats Cemetery, Burlington Flats. Friends and relatives are invited to attend.

Louise N. Dietrich
MARGARETVILLE — Committal services for Louise N. Dietrich, who died on Jan. 31, 2002, will be conducted at the Sanford Cemetery, Margaretville, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2002, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating.

Vanley Blackman
WALTON — Vanley C. Blackman, 83, of Walton, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Cooks Falls on May 26, 1918, the son of Clinton and Lena (McGregor) Blackman.
He was first married to Letha Strong on July 15, 1939, and she predeceased him in 1983. On Jan. 2, 1988, he married Alice Merrill.
For most of his life, Vanley operated the family farm in Arabia, which is now operated by his son, Richard.
In 1957, he became a farm equipment dealer for Jamesway-Butler-Jstar, serving many area farmers. In 1997, he received the company award for more than $1 million in sales.
He served for many years as a member of the Board of Education of the A.L. Kellogg School in Treadwell, and served for 25 years as a director of the Delaware Valley Agricultural Society Fair Board, Walton.
In past years, he was an avid hunter and a member of the Deer Slayers Hunting Club, and a member of the NRA.
He also had a great love for books, card playing and traveling.
Most dear to him was the time spent with family members and friends.
He attended the Hamden Presbyterian Church and was also a member of the Treadwell Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Alice Blackman, of Walton; his two sons and their wives, John and Virginia Blackman of Oneonta, and Richard and Lois Blackman of Walton; four grandchildren, Lori Robinson and husband, Richard, of Newport News, Va., Richard, Wayne and Kevin Blackman of Walton; two great-grandchildren, Bridget and Cody Robinson of Newport News, Va.; three stepdaughters, Jean Busch and husband, Charles, Linda Seifers, Kathleen Teehan and husband, Robert; one stepson, Duane Merrill and wife, Peg; four stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ethel Drake and Emeline VanAusdall. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Geertgens.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2002, in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Bert More, officiating. Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home at which time the family will be in attendance.

Richard Miller
ONEONTA — Richard "Dick" F. Miller, 57, of Franklin, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born May 29, 1944, in Hamden, the son of Floyd and Beatrice (Barkman) Miller.
He married Mary Lou Teets on Oct. 11, 1987, in Goldsboro, N.C.
Dick retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving 20 years. During that time he spent one year on a remote tour in Greenland and one year in Korea, and later spent 10 years in England. He received three Commendation Medals and various Meritorious Service Awards.
He worked as service manager for Eastern United Tires in Kinston, N.C., for the past 15 years. Most recently, he worked as a service writer for Empire Toyota/Kia of Oneonta.
Dick was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing.
He also enjoyed woodworking, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Miller, of Franklin; his sons and their spouses, Dean and Joyce Miller of Hodgenville, Ky., Steve and Amy Lantz of Bethel, Alaska, Michael and Angie Lantz of Grafton, Va.; his two daughters, Michelle Miller of Franklin and Lisa Miller of Kokomo, Ind.; his mother, Beatrice Wayman of Sidney; one brother and his spouse, Robert and May Miller of Franklin; two sisters and their spouses, Wanda and Don Thompson of Bainbridge and Joan and Neale Frank of Lakeside, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Austin, Jacob, Amelia, Hannah, Ashleigh and Noah; many nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate the life of Richard "Dick" Miller will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2002, in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin, with the Rev. Kenneth Baldwin, officiating.
There will be no calling hours.

Cecil L. Francisco
DELHI — Cecil L. Francisco, a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, May 12, 2002. He was 77.
He worked as a dairy farmer and for the New York State Department of Transportation.
Cecil Francisco was born on Feb. 22, 1925, in Hamden, to Montie and Melissa Schloss Francisco.
He was married to Beulah Trusdell on Dec. 21, 1974, in Treadwell. She survives at home in Delhi, where they have lived for the past 28 years. Before that, Mr. Francisco lived in Sidney Center.
He was a former member of the Masonville Federated Church and member and past president of the New England Ox Teamsters Association.
He will be remembered for raising and training his oxen and exhibiting them at the Delaware County Fair and for attending many ox pulls throughout New England.
Cecil Francisco is survived by his wife, Beulah, Delhi; daughters, Barbara Rosa and Cecelia Northrup, Walton; and stepchildren, Shirley Eichler, Bainbridge, Richard Briscoe, East Meredith, Phyllis Heannings, DeLancey, Janice Burdick, Bloomville, Barbara Miller, Rheiner, Va., and Laura Aji, South Glenns Falls. Also surviving are brothers, Max Francisco, Hancock, and Ellison Francisco, German; sisters, Charlotte Houck, Waxhaw, N.C., and Kathleen Patterson, Bainbridge; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Gerald Francisco, in 1961.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2002. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2002, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

James Couden Jr.
ONEONTA — James S. Couden Jr., 76, of Oneonta, passed away Monday, May 13, 2002, at the Veteran's Home in Oxford, after a lengthy illness.
He was born on Nov. 15, 1925, in Yonkers, the son of James Skinner Couden Sr. and Marion F. Moss.
He married Patricia A. Fitzpatrick in 1947. He married Georgia W. Bresee in 1976.
Mr. Couden was a veteran of World War II, from 1944 until 1946, serving on the USS PC 602 in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
In 1950, he received his bachelor of arts degree from Hartwick College and his master's degree in English education from New York University in 1954, and also worked on his doctorate at NYU.
Mr. Couden has been an area resident since 1955.
Mr. Couden was employed briefly at the Siering School in Bedford Hills, and at the Norwich Central School, where he was track and cross county coach. He was the Morris Central School English teacher for 25 years until his retirement, at which time he assumed a part-time position at the State University College at Oneonta as an instructor in English writing.
He particularly enjoyed his summers in Cape Cod restoring antique wooden boats.
He is survived by his wife, Georgia Couden, of Otego; two sons, James and his wife, Jane, of Oneonta and Patrick and his wife, Angie, of Queen Creek, Ariz.; two brothers, Dr. Alexander (Sandy) Couden of Oneonta and Richard Couden of Lombard, Ill; nine grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Patricia; and a son, John.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Oneonta.
There will be no calling hours.

Robert J. Smith
FORT PLAIN — Mr. Robert J. Smith, 87, formerly of Fort Plain, passed away Friday, May 10, 2002, at the Evergreen Woods Health and Rehabilitation Center, Spring Hill, Fla.
He was born Feb. 25, 1915, in the town of Cherry Valley, the son of Robert H. and Mary (Facker) Smith.
He married Thelma Snyder in 1943. She predeceased him in 1998.
He was educated in the Salt Springville and Springfield schools.
He drove tractor trailer, hauling cars, for many years. He was then employed by Beechnut Packing Company for 24 years.
He also owned a dairy farm on Clinton Road in Fort Plain until his retirement.
He moved to Florida in March 2000.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Sharon Smith of Fort Plain; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Ron Hollenbeck of Spring Hill, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Darla Smith of Fort Plain; five grandchildren; three great-grandsons; a stepgrandson; stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Alice Smith of Ilion; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a son, Arlan Smith; and a brother, Leland Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2002, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Fort Plain Cemetery, Fort Plain.
Calling hours will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at the funeral home.
