Jack P. Hough

PORT DICKINSON — Jack P. Hough, 52, of Port Dickinson, formerly of Oneonta, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 9, 2002, due to a work-related accident.

He was born on June 15, 1949, in Oneonta, to Albert and Margaret Hough.

He graduated from Schenevus Central School and the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill.

Jack was employed at the CP/D&H Railroad.

He is survived by his wife, Karen L. (Nichols) Hough; his parents, Albert W. and Margaret L. (Tompkins) Hough, Maryland; his children, Elizabeth Marceline Hough, Deborah and William Rohde, Edward and Jenevieve Jennings; his siblings, Albert W. Hough Jr., Ruth and William Cole and Katherine M. Hough; also many nieces, nephews; grandchildren; aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at noon from the Binghamton Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 305 Murray Hill Road, Vestal, with Bishop Gregory Talley, officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Special Olympics, in care of David Miller, 117 Marlette Road, Mount Vision, NY 13810.

Tracy Schelling

UNADILLA — Tracy Ann Schelling, 39, of Unadilla, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at her home.

She was born July 9, 1962, daughter of the late Andrew and Audrey Scofield Schelling in Mount Kisco.

Tracy was employed as an inspector for Mamco in Oneonta.

She is survived by her husband, Ted Lee, Unadilla; sons, Frederick and Thomas Sackett of New Paltz; daughters, Katherine and Jessica Sackett, New Paltz, Helen Lee, Patterson; brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Cynthia Schelling, Pound Ridge; sisters, Karen Manning,  White Plains, and Catherine Schelling, Yonkers; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, April 13, 2002, at Raymond Hill Cemetery in Carmel at 1 p.m.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 12, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Edith M. Daly

ONEONTA — Memorial services for Edith M. Daly, 77, of Oneonta, who passed away March 13, 2002, will be held at Shineman Chapel on the Hartwick College campus on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at 1 p.m., with her godson, the Rev. Peter W. Mayer, officiating,

Regina Carpenter

HOLMESVILLE — Regina M. Carpenter, "Reg," 68, lifelong resident of Holmesville and South New Berlin, passed away early Wednesday morning, April 10, 2002, in the Binghamton General Hospital.

Born and raised in Holmesville, Reg attended the South New Berlin schools. Soon after her schooling, she began a longtime employment with Breakstone (Kraft Foods) in South Edmeston, working there for 35 years, retiring in 1987.

Reg was always willing to help her friends and neighbors in any way she could when they needed a hand. She was very fond of flowers.

Reg was born in Holmesville on Dec. 3, 1933, the daughter of George and Mary (Knapp) Meade.

She is survived by her daughter, Connie Barnes, and her husband, Gary, of Norwich; by her longtime companion, Carmen Mills of Holmesville; by her sister, Mary Baldwin of Norwich; and by three brothers, Robert Meade and wife, Lois, of Norwich, Richard Meade and wife, Deana, of Holmesville and Thomas Meade and wife, Virginia, of Norwich. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Donnie, Justin and John Wood, Megan Barnes, Matt Barnes and Ashley Barnes; and several nieces and nephews.

Reg was predeceased by her husband, Donald Carpenter, in 1961; and by her sister, Jean Burdick.

Memorial services for Reg will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at 11 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Romeyn Kipp, pastor of the Holmesville Baptist Church, officiating.

Interment will be at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery of South New Berlin.

Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to United Health Services Foundation, 10-42 Mitchell Ave., Binghamton, NY 13903, marked "Dialysis Unit."

Richard W. Oakley

GRAND GORGE — Richard William Oakley, 27, of Grand Gorge, and presently of Valdosta, Ga., passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2002, in Valdosta, Ga.

He was born on March 22, 1975, in Oneonta, son of Guy Richard and Terrie Ann Oakley.

He married Tonya Lynn (Long). She is surviving in Valdosta, Ga.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for eight years as an aerospace ground technician.

He spent the last eight years in Valdosta, Ga., having been a Grand Gorge resident most of his life.

He was a member of the Grand Gorge Fire Department. He graduated from Gilboa Central School in 1994.

He is survived by his wife, Tonya Oakley of Valdosta, Ga.; mother and father, Dick and Terrie Oakley of Stamford; two daughters, Jennifer Lynn Oakley of Valdosta, Ga., and Samantha Ann Oakley of Goldsboro, N.C.; sister, Melissa Oakley of Stamford; grandmother, Audrey Case of Grand Gorge; and good friend, Derrick Zeigler of Valdosta, Ga. He is also survived by aunts and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Monday, April 15, 2002, at the Gilboa Methodist Church in Gilboa, with the Rev. Martha Vink officiating.

Burial will be in Gilboa Cemetery in Gilboa.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2002, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

In memory of Richard W. Oakley, offerings may be made to the Gilboa Methodist Church, Gilboa NY 12076.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home of Roxbury.

Thelma Hitchcock

BAINBRIDGE — Thelma E. Hitchcock, 96, of Bainbridge, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2002, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.

She was born May 4, 1905, the daughter of the late Charles M. and Elizabeth Riddle  Taylor in Salem, Ohio.

Thelma married Elwyn D. Hitchcock on Nov. 5, 1945. He predeceased her on April 15, 1997.

She was employed as a teller for NBT Bank in Bainbridge for 20 years and retired in 1946.

Mrs. Hitchcock was the past secretary for the Bainbridge Historical Society, past historian for the Bainbridge Women's Club and past member of the Library Association.

She loved to paint and sew, and although crippled by arthritis, she continued her many activities which included her beautiful flower garden, which was envied by many.

She is survived by niece, Betty Patchen of Bainbridge; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Donna and Berkley Hammond of Huntsville, Ala., and Hilda and Leon Van Camp of Bainbridge; special friends, James O'Connor and family; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by her brother, Charles Taylor.

Funeral and committal services will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Greenlawn Cemetery Association, Alzheimer's Association, 1406 Monroe St., Endicott, NY 13760 or the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Alicia V. Mald

NEW CITY — Alicia Virginia Mald, 85, of New City, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Rockland County Infirmary.

Born on Nov. 14, 1916, in Laurens, she was the daughter of Howard and Lou Williams.

She was employed by the federal government until her retirement in 1979.

Survivors include a son, Lance E. Killmeier, and his wife, Donna, of Fort Ann; a daughter, Kay DiNuzzo, and her husband, John, of New City; and a son, Mark W. Simmons, and his wife, JoAnn, of Rochester; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at the convenience of the family, to be announced.

Wilbur L. Hansen

COOPERSTOWN — Wilbur (Bill) L. Hansen, 85, of Greenough Road in Cooperstown, died Thursday afternoon, April 11, 2002, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.

He was born on Feb. 23, 1917, in Richmond Hill, Long Island, N.Y., a son of Danish immigrants, John K. and Camilla (Andersen) Hansen. He married Jeanette Baldwin Lampman on Oct. 25, 1952, in Oneonta.

As a young child, Bill moved with his family to Oneonta, where he graduated from Oneonta High School with the Class of 1935. During World War II he served his country as a member of the New York Guard. In 1937 Bill began a long and distinguished career in advertising.

He was first associated with the Oneonta Daily Star, becoming its circulation manager and later the advertising manager. He then joined King Features Syndicate in New York City, representing it in the Midwest. He later joined Metro Newspaper Service of New York City and for 27 years represented it in New York City and New England, retiring in 1979.

Bill was a member of Hartwick Seminary Evangelical Lutheran Church, the New England Advertising Executives' Association, the New England Press Association, the New York Advertising Managers' Association, the New York Weekly Press Association and the New England Weekly Press. He was also a life-member of the Oneonta Elks Club No. 1312.

An avid golfer since the age of 11, Bill played at both the Oneonta and Cooperstown Country clubs. During his life he enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling and traveling. He especially enjoyed summer water activities with his family at their cottage on Arnold Lake in the Town of Milford.

Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Jeanette, of Cooperstown; two sons, Harry G. Lampman, Jr. of Schenectady and Jon W. Hansen and his wife, Maureen, of Oneonta; two daughters, Paula Lampman Henrich and her husband, Tom, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Bryn Ryan and her husband, Chuck, of Southington, Conn.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 15, 2002, at the Hartwick Seminary Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Paul R. Messner, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, when Bill's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Hartwick Seminary Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4636 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Olive B. Reynolds

FRANKLIN — Olive Bryden Reynolds, 84, of Franklin passed away Thursday, April 11, 2002, at her home with her loving family by her side.

She was born in the town of Colchester on Aug. 11, 1917, the daughter of Irvin and Nellie (Tait) Bryden. She married Ely Reynolds on May 30, 1936. He died on Oct. 14, 1978.

She worked for the Bendix Corp. in Sidney for 37 years. She also operated a dairy farm for several years in Franklin where she had resided for the past 50 years.

Olive served on the town of Franklin Board of Elections for several years. She especially enjoyed gardening and tending to the many tasks that needed to be done around the house, but most of all enjoyed being home with her family.

She is survived by her three daughters and their spouses, Barbara and Ronald Wormuth of Unadilla, Betty and Richard Thomson of Franklin, Patricia and Clayton Stanton of Walton; one son and his spouse, Allan "Tink" and Cathy Reynolds of Walton; a brother, Bernard Bryden, of Sidney Center; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Martin T. Reynolds, who died Oct. 14, 1977, and a grandson, Randy L. Thomson, who died April 22, 1983.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 15, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin, with the Rev. Joe Bokel, chaplain of the Countryside Care Conter, officiating. Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends may call at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 5 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad, Main Street, Franklin, NY 13775 or to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Elizabeth M. Bolton

NEW BERLIN — Elizabeth M. Bolton, 81, of New Berlin, N.Y., died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born April 3, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Frank and Matilda (Ullrich) Spahn.

She married John F. Bolton on Aug. 13, 1957. He died Jan. 3, 1982.

She spent her childhood on Long Island, N.Y.

She is survived by her children, James Nostrand of South New Berlin, N.Y., Mary Jane Burtis, Diane Cassidy, Terry Convis, Elizabeth A. Lee of New Berlin, Stephan Baker of Cleveland, Ohio, Wendy Stalloch of West Winfield, N.Y.; grandchildren, Heather Carey, Ron Cummings, Rebecca Carey, Stephanie Carey, Kelly Kappauf, Ryan Kappauf, Sarah Convis and Jenny Convis, all of new Berlin, and Joe and Heather Cassidy of  Pennsylvania, Robert and Kecia Burtis of Virginia, Carlos and Misty Moscardini of Norwich, William and Shelly Burtis Jr. of New Berlin, Larry and Terry Ann Greco of South New Berlin; stepgrandchildren, Daryll, Desi, Derek and Dustin Lee of Endicott; and great-grandchildren, Brian and Kasandra of Maryland, Kaylynn and Heather of Virginia, Robert, Richard and Spencer of New Berlin, Charlie and Pam of South New Berlin; and a sister, Matilda Haupt, of New York.

She was predeceased by two sons, Skipper Nostrand and Nicholas Scott, and a brother, Frank Spahn.

Her family thought of her as the greatest mom in the world.

A funeral service for Mrs. Bolton will take place Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, officiating.

Interment will be in St. Andrew's Cemetery, New Berlin.

Calling hours are Monday, April 15, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

The family expresses its appreciation to the doctors and staff of Bassett Hospital for going above and beyond the call of duty.

Memorial donations in Mrs. Bolton's memory may be made to the March of Dimes or to the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation at Box 78342, Phoenix, AZ 05062-8342.

Michael Girsdansky

SARANAC LAKE — Michael B. Girsdansky, 69, of 30 Greenwood St., died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, after a short illness.

Mr. Girsdansky was born Jan. 29, 1933, in New York City to Joseph and Anne Minnerly Girsdansky.

As a Boy Scout, he achieved the rank of Eagle. He was a 1950 graduate of New Rochelle High School and a 1952 graduate of the University of Chicago, majoring in international relations. He was a writer and translator for the American Cancer Society and IBM, retiring in 1984.

He married the former Perdita Lilly in 1956. After their divorce, he married the former Catherine Owen in 1960. She died Aug. 14, 1993. Mr. Girsdansky was a columnist for the last several years for the "Lake Placid News." Fluent in several languages, he also was the author of "The Adventure of Language," a book on linguistics and several magazine pieces.

He was honorably discharged from the United States Army, serving from 1956 to 1958.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Kathleen Girsdansky of Cobleskill; a daughter and son-in-law, Karina and Dean Wright III, of Fredrick, Md.; three grandchildren, Gwendolyn Girsdansky of Cobleskill and Richmondville, N.Y., Diana and Dean Wright IV of Fredrick, Md.; and several nieces and cousins.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, at the Clark Funeral Home, 27 Saranac Ave., Lake Placid.

A memorial observance will follow at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the North Elba Cemetery.

Donations may be made to North Country Public Radio, St. Lawrence University, Canton NY 13617-1475.

Sally I. Fredenburg

ONEONTA — Sally I. Fredenburg, 57, of Oneonta, died unexpectantly Friday, April 12, 2002, at her residence.

She was born April 13, 1944, in Oneonta to Walter and Louise (Fox) Grant.

She married Donald O. Fredenburg in Laurens on July 20, 1975.

Sally was a life long area resident and was currently employed at the Oneonta Wal-Mart Pharmacy. She had been with Wal-Mart since the opening of the Oneonta store. She had previously been employed at the Fox Nursing Home for 20 years and in addition, Sally and her husband have been the caretakers of the Oneonta Masonic Temple. She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church of Oneonta and a member of the Martha Chapter 116, Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her husband at home; her mother, Louise Grant, at the Fox Nursing Home; a stepson, Donald O. Fredenburg Jr. of Nachez, Miss.; a stepdaughter Ruth Marie Lankford of Gary, Ind.; a sister, Sandy Collins of Oneonta; two nephews, Tim Miller of Albany and Brian Miller and his wife, Sandy, of Atlanta, Ga.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta with the Rev. Godwin Nnamani officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., in Oneonta after 3 p.m. Monday. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Masonic Lodge Building Fund, 322 Main St., Oneonta NY 13820.
