Robert J. Swadey

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio — Robert J. Swadey, 75, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, passed away Monday, April 1, 2002, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, N.Y., with his family at his side, after a lengthy illness.

He was born Aug. 7, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of John George and Florence (Wolke) Swadey.

Due to ill health, Mr. Swadey has been in the Oneonta, N.Y., area so as to be close to his daughter and son-in-law, Jeannie Loh Langdon and Greg Langdon and their daughter, Xandry.

Mr. Swadey was first married to Eileen Mary Serschen on July 14, 1951, in Cleveland, Ohio. She died Aug. 12, 1959. Later, he was married to Mary Jeanne Dwyer on Feb. 9, 1973, in Cleveland, Ohio. She died May 18, 1999.

He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was stationed in Okinawa and U.S.-occupied Japan following World War II and worked as geodetic surveyor in the post-hostilities mapping program.

A graduate of Cathedral Latin High School and John Carroll University, he earned his law degree from Ohio State University College of Law with the Class of 1950.

In 1951, he entered into a law partnership, which later became the firm of Hahn, Swadey & Roth.

He was president and chairman of the board of Midland Title Security Inc., which he founded in 1955, and was regional vice-president and a director of First American Title Insurance Co. of Santa Ana,  Calif. Midland Title now has 30 offices throughout Ohio,  West Virginia and Kentucky, and presently employs more than 400 people.

He was also a licensed real estate broker and real estate instructor.

Mr. Swadey served as a director of Mount Alverna Nursing Home in Parma, Ohio, for which he was a dedicated fund-raiser. He was a past director of the Ohio Bar Title Insurance Co. and a former trustee of the Ohio Land Title Association, which recognized him as an honorary life member.

He was a benefactor of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association of Northeast Ohio, the American Cancer Society, the Alliance for the Mentally Ill, University Hospitals Health System (Cleveland), Hopewell House (Mesopotamia, Ohio), John Carroll University and the Ohio State University College of Law.

He was a member of the Cuyahoga Bar Association, the Ohio Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Ohio Land Title Association, the American Land Title Association and the Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity.

He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe and was an avid reader of American and World history, with a particular interest in the Civil War, Germany and the Orient.

He was devoted to his family, friends and employees, impacting their lives with his honesty and generosity. A lover of baseball, he was a loyal Cleveland Indians fan.

He is survived by one daughter, Jeannie Loh Langdon and her husband, Greg Langdon, of Oneonta; a son, Richard Swadey of Cleveland, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Donna Ozmun of Cleveland; and one stepson, Thomas Vacca and his wife, Judy Vacca, of Cleveland, Ohio; two loving sisters, Mary Alice Armishaw and Katherine Adams, both of Locust Grove, Va.; a brother, John Swadey of St. Petersburg, Fla.; four grandchildren, Xandry Langdon of Oneonta, Scott Elkins and his wife, Patricia, Mark Vacca and his wife, Grace, and Cari Vacca, all of Cleveland, Ohio; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Anthony and Emily Elkins and Abigail Vacca of Cleveland, Ohio.

He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Hunt; and two brothers-in-law, William Armishaw and Robert Adams.

Mr. Swadey is also survived by a "family" of devoted caregivers here in the Oneonta area.

Calling hours were held at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, at 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta, from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2002, when the family was in attendance. A prayer service was offered at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, officiating.

On Monday evening, April 8, 2002, at 5:30 p.m., there will be a memorial service offered at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Judy Quarles officiating.

There will be calling hours at the Schulte and Mahon-Murphy Funeral Home in Lyndhurst, Ohio, with a Mass of Christian burial at the St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, at a later date.

If desired, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the ALS Association, the Alliance for the Mentally Ill, the American Cancer Society or Bassett Healthcare Hannah-Lee House Fund, in loving memory of Robert Swadey.

Augustine J. Fazio

UNADILLA — A Mass of Christian burial for Augustine "Gus" J. Fazio, 65, of Unadilla, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Tuesday evening, April 2, 2002, at his home, will be held Saturday, April 6, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Sacred Heart Church in Sidney, with the Rev. Gordon A. Polenz, pastor, officiating.

Nicholas Garbera

OTEGO — Nicholas Garbera, 78, of Garden View Manor, formerly of Keating Road, Richfield Springs, passed away on Wednesday morning, April 3, 2002, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born on Sept. 19, 1923, in Weedsport, Pa., son of the late Alex E. and Theodora Hubick Garbera.

A lifelong area resident, he was educated in Schuyler Lake Schools.

A U.S. Army veteran, he was honorably discharged in 1949, with the rank of private first class.

On Aug. 2, 1958, he married Ida May Pope in the Richfield Springs United Methodist Church.

For many years Mr. Garbera worked as a dairy farmer on the family farm in Richfield Springs. In later years he worked for the Remington Arms Co., Remington Rand and the General Electric Corp., retiring in 1979.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 43 years, Ida; two sons, Richard Garbera of Newport and Charles and his wife, Eva Mae Garbera, of Otego; a brother, Harry and his wife, Barbara Garbera, of Richfield Springs; three sisters, Mary and her husband, Lee Seamon, of Richfield Springs, Katherine Booth of Thomaston, Conn., and Ann Vallee of Utica; seven grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, John, Michael, Peter, William, Thomas, Harold and Timothy Garbera; and one sister, Julia Skramko.

Funeral service will be on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, at 40 West James St. in Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Young officiating. Interment will follow in Schuyler Lake Cemetery.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Arthur J. Morrell

SCHENEVUS — Arthur John Morrell, 82, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare of Schoharie County in Cobleskill.

He was previously of Ridge Road, Schenevus, and for the last six years has lived with his daughter, Peggy Collins, on Dickson Road in Schenevus.

He was born June 19, 1919, at home in Worcester, the son of Dorwin and Tilly (Morell) Morrell.

Mr. Morrell married Alfredia J. Moxham on Sept. 2, 1940, in Worcester.

He was a lifelong area resident, residing in Schenevus for the past 54 years.

Mr. Morrell worked at Timberland Products in Stamford, retiring in 1974. He worked for Farmers Feed in Schenevus. He also ran his own farm his entire life.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a kind and generous man who would do anything for anyone.

He was predeceased by his wife in 1995; several brothers and sisters; two grandsons; and a great-grandson.

He is survived by a son, Carl Morrell, and companion, Michelle, of Maryland; three daughters, Beatrice and husband, George Wahl, of Newark Valley, Marie and husband, Harry Fries, of Fonda and Peggy and husband, Bob Collins, of Schenevus; a sister, Dorothy Joyce of Virginia; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and one special bundle of joy on the way; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins; and his sidekick, Mikey.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 5, 2002, at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus from 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be Saturday, April 6, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Rodney Johnson, pastor of the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in his memory to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, at 25 Arch St. in Schenevus.

Lawrence J. Kirk

WEST EDMESTON — Lawrence J. Kirk, 89, of West Edmeston, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at his home.

He was born July 7, 1912, in West Leyden, the son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Rhinebeck) Kirk.

On Nov. 10, 1934, he married Anna Lastowicka in Floyd.

He was employed for 60 years by I.T.&C.A. Welch and Sons in West Edmeston.

He is survived by his wife, Anna; three daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and Fred Tilbe, Marian and Peter Wellner Alice Sargent; one son, Robert, and daughter-in-law, Dora Kirk; 13 grandchildren, Larry Andrews, David Andrews, Patricia Gomez, Terry Andrews, Kellee Esposito, Karen Wellner, Robert Wellner, Michael Sargent, Cindy Karis, Darci Harrington, Kim Bennett, Timothy Kirk and Lori Rice; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his brother, Paul; and three sisters, Magdalina, Edith and Maude; and his son-in-law, Warren Sargent.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in West Edmeston, with the Rev. Don Buck and the Rev. Don Mateson officiating. Friends may call from noon until 2 p.m. before the service at the church.

Burial will be in West Edmeston Cemetery.

Contributions in memory of Lawrence may be made to the First Baptist Church of West Edmeston, the West Edmeston Cemetery or charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home of Edmeston.

Kenneth E. Fallis

EDMESTON — Kenneth E. Fallis, 80, of Edmeston, died Thursday April 4, 2002, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

He was born Dec. 7, 1921, in Oswego, N.Y., the son of Arthur and Marie (Chatterton) Fallis. On Dec. 12, 1952, in Edmeston, he married Barbara E. Schrag, who survives.

Ken was a veteran of the armed forces, serving in the Army Air Corps as an officer from 1943 to 1950. He had been employed as a designer with Allied Amphenol in Sidney and was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston. Ken was also a member of the Wharton Valley American Legion Post #1311, The Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston VFW Post #7128 of Cooperstown, The Hump Pilots Association and the C.B.I. Veterans Association.

Ken was also an active member of the Edmeston Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Ken had been active in the Boy Scouts, Little League and the Edmeston Recreation Association where he helped to build the Little League field and the town pool. Ken greatly enjoyed the companionship of his German short-haired pointer, Gabby, and had a great passion for cooking for others.

In addition to his wife of 49 years, Barbara; he is survived by his son and daughter in law, Kevin and Carolyn Fallis of Jamesville, and his son, Rick Fallis, of Berkeley,  Calif.; his sister, Rosemary Bittel of Erieville; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 9, at 2 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston with the Rev. John Blackman officiating.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ken's memory to the Edmeston Emergency Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Victor Dutka

MORRIS — Victor Dutka, 82, formerly of Morris, N.Y., died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Glendale, N.Y.

He was born on Dec. 19, 1919, in Engerau, Czechoslovakia, the son of Andreas and Emilie (Kristofek) Dutka. He married Josephine Oettinger in 1948. She died on July 5, 1994.

He had worked as a forester before WW II and moved to New York in 1956 and worked in the printing industry and later as a sheet metal technician and had resided in Glendale until his retirement when he moved to Morris in 1984. He had resided most recently at the Dominican Village in Amityville, N.Y.

Victor is survived by his son, Michael Dutka, and daughter-in- law, Denise, and his daughter, Margaret Rehberger, and son-in-law, Ken. He was brother to Gitta Dutka of Hainburg, Austria. He was blessed by his grandchildren, Kathryn Rehberger, Nicholas, Stefan and Jonathan Dutka.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, April 6, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Schwille Funeral Home in Glendale.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, April 7, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 8, at 9:30 a.m. at the Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in Morris, with the Rev. John Burns officiating.

Committal services and burial will follow at the Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

The Dutka family requests that anyone wishing to make a donation in Victor's memory do so to the Morris Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 452, Morris, NY 13908. Envelopes will be available at the Johnston Funeral Home.

Arthur More

ROXBURY — Arthur More, 62, of Roxbury, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at Albany Medical Center, Albany, N.Y.

He was born Jan. 29, 1940, in Roxbury, N.Y., son of Donald J. and Leona (Ryder) More.

He worked as a salesperson in the steel industry for several years.

After retiring he moved back to Roxbury and remained there for the past 20 years.

He was a member of the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, graduated from Roxbury Central School and attended the University of Buffalo.

He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, James and Carol More of Fallston, Md.; and cousins.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 9, at 3 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating. Friends may call Tuesday from 2 p.m. until service time at 3 p.m.

Burial will be in Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Contributions in memory of Arthur More may be made to the Ambulance Fund of the Roxbury Fire Department, Roxbury, NY 12474.

Arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Johnathan Dilello

LAURENS — Johnathan M. Dilello, 18, of Laurens, passed away Friday, April 5, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born Dec. 2, 1983, in Oneonta, the son of John (Jay) Dilello and the late Tammy Bookhout, who died in 1991.

Johnathan was a senior at the Laurens Central School, where he was an honor student, participating in basketball, baseball and soccer.

He was a member of AAU Basketball Team at the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club.

He was a member of the Spanish Club, was on the school honor roll and showed particular interest in the various art courses and programs at the school.

Johnathan enjoyed his family and his home and was constantly doing outside work around the house and neighborhood.

He enjoyed his four-wheel vehicles and was extremely fond of his dogs, Tasha and Bridget.

Johnathan is survived by his parents, Jay and Traci, at home; his paternal grandparents, Eugene (John) and Dawn Dilello; his maternal grandmother, Marion Bookhout, and companion, Dwane Card; and his maternal grandfather, Benjamin Bookhout, and companion, Sylvia Rosell; his maternal grandmother, Barbara Gay; his maternal great-grandmother, Carrie Bookhout; and maternal great-grandfather, Howard Truscott.

He is also survived by a brother, Jordan Richard Dilello; and a sister, Jenna Rose Dilello; and his girlfriend, Jennifer O'Dell; several aunts and uncles, including Robin and Randy Winans, Gary and Mindy Dilello, Julie and Bob Zaveral, Joann and Robert Winn, Jill and Sean Bookhout, Tom Bookhout, and Dawn and Vern Hall; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Richard Gay; and a cousin, Jessica Bookhout.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Nnamani Godwin officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Row Cemetery in Laurens.

Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Laurens Central School, where an outside basketball court will be erected in memory of Johnathan. Contributions should be made to Mary and Mark Robbins, 3574 State Highway 23, West Oneonta NY 13861.

Clyde LeRoy Krofft

EAST GREENBUSH — Clyde LeRoy Krofft, 77, of East Greenbush, and formerly of Toddsville, died early Saturday morning, April 6, 2002, at the Eden Park Healthcare Facility in East Greenbush.

He was born on May 28, 1924, in Toddsville, a son of LeRoy L. and Ethel M. (Virtell) Krofft.

He married Beatrice I. Yerry on April 8, 1967, in Hartwick. Mrs. Krofft died on April 7, 1997.

Raised and educated in Toddsville, Mr. Krofft served his country during World War II as an airplane and engine mechanic in the United States Army Air Force. He was a member of Squadron K of the 3502nd Army Air Force Base Unit stationed in Southern France and was involved in the air offensives over Europe.

He received the Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross and was honorably discharged, with the rank of Staff Sergeant on Sept. 20, 1945.

Following his military service, Mr. Krofft lived and worked in Illinois, before moving back to Toddsville. For several years he was employed by Corning Inc. in Oneonta as an inspector in the manufacturing of hospital glassware.

He was of the Episcopal faith.

Mr. Krofft is survived by a daughter, Judith Ann Davis, and her husband, Thomas, of St. Cloud, Fla.; a son, Ronald J. Krofft and his wife, Cynthia, of Guilderland; five granddaughters; two grandsons; two great-granddaughters; a sister, Laura Halpin of Virginia; several stepchildren; and stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Beatrice; he was predeceased by his first wife, Mildred Morris; two sisters, Ethel Degner and Edna Meehan; and a granddaughter, Rebecca Krofft, who died in 1995.

A graveside funeral and committal service will be held, at a date and time to be determined, at Hartwick Seminary Cemetery, with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector of Christ Church in Cooperstown, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
