William G. Merwin

JEFFERSON — William G. "Willie" Merwin, 59, of  Jefferson, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born in Charlotteville on Nov. 13, 1942, the son of David and Laura (Effner) Merwin Sr.

He married Mary Neer on Oct. 24, 1964.

He is survived by a son, Wesley Merwin and his wife, Deborah of Stamford; six grandchildren; a brother, David Merwin Jr. of Charlotteville; three sisters, Alice Morrell of Richmondville, Anna Hollenbeck of Sloansville and Elizabeth Pitt of Delhi; along with several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; his former wife, Mary Jester of Davenport; and two special friends who cared for him, Patty Bassett and her friend, Keith; and a special little friend, Sierra.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Shirley Bonney, Jeanette Stevens, Lucille Pitt and Ethel Renwick.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Richard Smith, pastor of the Full Gospel Church, Cobleskill, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in the Charlotteville Cemetery.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, in lieu of flowers.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Carolyn Manley

MASONVILLE — Carolyn Marcia Foote Manley, age 65, of Masonville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.

She was born Aug. 18, 1936, in Otego, the daughter of Stuart and Ena (Dana) Foote.

Carolyn graduated from Otego Central School in 1955, and was then employed by Scintilla, working in the engineering department, blueprint room from 1955-1960.

She married Charles E. Manley on July 19, 1959, at the Otego Methodist Church. They were longtime residents of Masonville.

She was a member of the Masonville Federated Church and president of the Masonville PTO during the country's bicentennial year 1975-1976.

Carolyn was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved God and her country, to walk, bird watch, garden and raise fruit. She loved her animals and was always a good neighbor to all.

She was famous locally for her pancakes, cinnamon rolls and whole-wheat bread and rolls, and she loved to invent new recipes.

She will be profoundly missed by both family and friends.

Carolyn was predeceased by her husband, Charles E. Manley; her parents, Stuart and Ena Foote; her father-in-law, Earnest Manley; and two brothers-in-law, Choral Mattison and Alan Leech.

Surviving are her daughter, Brenda Manley Waite; and her son, Dustan James Manley; a granddaughter, Kristin McDonough; and a grandson, Dustan Manley Jr. Also surviving are her mother-in-law, Ruth (Jorgensen) Manley; two brothers-in-law, Gerald Manley and Douglas Manley; seven sisters and their spouses, Evelyn (Evander) McLaughlin, Phyllis Mattison, Coralie (Howard) Mattice, Ina (Donald) Phillips, Helen Dropp, Susena (Randolph) Hulbert, and Sara (Richard) Yager; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be Friday, March 1, 2002, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, with a memorial service following by the Rev. Al Mosher.

Donations in her name may be made to the Masonville Fire Department or the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Edward M. Matus

ST. JOHNSVILLE — Edward Michael Matus, 77, of St. Johnsville, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at his home.

He was born in St. Johnsville on Aug. 6, 1924, the son of the late Joseph and Katherine (Pasieka) Matuszewski.

Edward attended St. Johnsville High School, a graduate of the Class of 1941.

On Jan. 21, 1950, Edward was joined in holy matrimony to the former Evelyn Ouderkirk of St. Johnsville.

Edward is survived by his wife, Evelyn; daughters, Michal Ann Rizzo and husband, Joseph of Oneonta, and Patricia Jean Meyers of Utica. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Joseph Edward Rizzo, Nicola Katherine Rizzo and Roy Edward Meyers.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Frank Matus, Thaddeus Matus and Stanley Matuszewski.

Mr. Matus was a retired postmaster of St. Johnsville.

Edjo, also known as "Big Train" was a well-known athlete in his youth. He played for various baseball teams in the area and was a former pitcher for the New York Giants' Farm Team, being signed in 1947.

Edward Matus was a veteran of World War II, serving in Europe. He was a veteran of Normandy and Northern France Campaign. He was wounded in action and spent more than a year in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

His decorations include Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, European, African, Middle East Campaign medals with two major battle stars, a Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross.

He was especially proud of the recent recognition by the French government and the New York state Senate to all World War II veterans who fought on French soil. Medals were given to each veteran for fighting and defending French soil.

Mr. Matus was a member and past commander of the Starr-Colorito VFW, Morris J. Edwards American Legion, Post No. 168, Earl Stock Post 3275 VFW, a charter member of the Battle of Normandy Foundation, the 101st Airborne Association, Static Line Association Airborne, Military Order of the Purple Heart No. 130 in Herkimer, lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Post No. 162 in Herkimer, and the National Commanders Colonel DAV club.

A memorial mass of resurrection will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2002, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in St. Johnsville. The family will be receiving friends and relatives immediately following the services at the Church Hall.

Interment will take place in St. Johnsville Cemetery in the spring.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville.

Edward Matus will be remembered as a very loving and giving father and grandfather.

Francis B. Smith

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Francis B. "Smitty" Smith, 88, husband of Mrs. Blanche Hurt Smith, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, in Augusta, Ga.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at 2:30 p.m. in Platt's Chapel, with the Rev. George Foster, officiating. The burial will be at Westover Memorial Park.

Additional survivors include, two stepsons, Robert L. Hurt of Florence, Ala., and Thomas R. Hurt of Simpsonville, S.C.; two sisters, Helen Mulligan of Fly Creek, N.Y., and Katherine Van Allen of Richfield Springs, N.Y.; and five stepgrandchildren.

A native of Schuyler Lake, N.Y., Mr. Smith was a former bus driver and worked 25 years in the hotel business before retiring.

He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

He was member of the Elks Club No. 205, the American Legion, the Augusta Sheriff's association and St. Mary's On The Hill Catholic Church.

Pallbearers will be Dan Price, Richard L. Hurt, Richie Hurt, Phil Hoffman, Al Hanson and Floyd Krusyka.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary On The Hill Catholic Church, 1220 Monte Sano Ave., Augusta, Ga. 30904.

Arrangements are by the Platt's Funeral Home, 721 Crawford Ave., Augusta, Ga.

Mildred G. Wakeman

ONEONTA — Mildred G. Wakeman, 94, of Oneonta, formerly of Sidney, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at the Oneonta Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born May 28, 1907, in Delhi, the daughter of William and Bertha (Terry) Gray.

She married her first husband, Edward Ruteshouser on Feb. 12, 1927. He died July 1944. On Aug. 5, 1946, she married Henry Wakeman. He died in 1994.

Mildred was a factory worker at Bendix-Scintilla in Sidney from 1942-1970.

She lived in Sidney more than 20 years before moving to the Hampshire House in Oneonta, and then the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church.

Mildred enjoyed crocheting, knitting and seamstress work as a pastime.

She is survived by her son, Rodger Ruteshouser and his companion, Patricia Markey of Oneonta; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Earl Brant of New Port Richey, Fla.; two stepsons, Robert Wakeman of California and Richard Wakeman of Dallas,  Texas; one sister, Leona Flick of Sidney; and one brother, Leland Gray of Unadilla. Also survived by 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; six great- great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mildred was predeceased by a daughter, June Saros; and five brothers; and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith Thistle, chaplain of A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, officiating

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Walton Cemetery, Walton.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the Sidney United Methodist Church in Sidney in memory of Mildred G. Wakeman.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta and Otego.

Mavis Joan Ford

MARGARETVILLE — Mavis Joan Ford (nee MacDonald), 89, of Margaretville, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at the Kingston Hospital.

She was born May 7, 1912, in Lac Megantic, Quebec, Canada, and moved to Shandaken at the age of 17.

She formerly worked as a LPN/private nurse in the New York City area and operated a beauty shop in the Margaretville area for several years.

She was a member of the Margaretville Presbyterian Church.

She was an avid reader, and loved to cook for her family.

She formerly made her home in Fleischmanns.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ivan, Aug. 30, 1989.

Mavis is survived by daughter, Marcia and husband, Charles Geehrer of Margaretville; sons, Martin and wife, Beverly of Vero Beach, Fla., and Douglas Ford and wife, Mona of Roxbury. Mavis is also lovingly survived by seven grandchildren, Suzanne Sluiter, Brend Todd, Christine Geehrer, Ed Geehrer, Elizabeth Vermilyea, Marcia Seiler and Martin Ford; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews of the Shandaken Gossoo and Ford families; as well as niece, Mavis Wood in Canada; and sister-in-law, Shirley Ford in Connecticut.

A service to celebrate the life of Mavis Ford will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, Main Street, Phoenicia.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home.

Burial in the Shandaken Rural Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.
