John C. Bell
RIVERVIEW, Fla. — John "Jack" C. Bell, 65, of Riverview, Fla., formerly of Milford, N.Y., passed away Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, Steven Bell and family of New Jersey; daughter, Diane Maio and family of Islip, N.Y.; stepson, John Wynn of Riverview, Fla.; stepdaughters, Jeanne Lear and family of Corvallis, Mont., Patty Parsons and family of Bronxville, N.Y., Wanda Leonardi of Granite Falls, N.C.; two brothers, William of New Jersey and David of Florida; four loving grandchildren, Michael, Stephanie, Matthew and Ryan; aunt, Edna R. Smith of Riverview, Fla.; and his constant companion, Duffy.
Mr. Bell has resided in the Tampa area for one year, coming from Milford, N.Y. He was a parts manager for Brooklyn Union Gas Co. (Key Span), a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the American Legion in Milford, N.Y.
A memorial service will be conducted 5 p.m. Thursday at the Stowers Riverview Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sept. 11 Widows and Victims Family Association, care of J. Miccio, 15 Barlo Ave., Glen Cove, L.I., NY 11542 in his memory.

Scott A. Nelson
UNADILLA — Scott A. Nelson, 34, was ushered by his angels into the arms of Jesus his Lord on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at the Joshua House in Unadilla, his home.
He left behind his mother, Jane Wilms, of Wells Bridge; his father, Charles Nelson, of Savannah, Tenn.; his grandmothers, Mary Romano of Franklin and Helen Del Vecchio of Fort Myers, Fla.; and two sisters and a brother, Kimberlee (Romano) Harmer, Brook Romano and Bret Romano.
He is also survived by his extended family and many friends, especially those who cared for him previously at ARC, Country Club ICF and Oneonta Day Treatment, and most recently at the Joshua House in Unadilla.
Scott's gentle spirit touched many lives through the years. He will be sorely missed.
A service to celebrate Scott's life will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, NY 13820, with Gerard DeMatteo, pastor of the Rutherford Bible Chapel, Rutherford, N.J., officiating.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Truman F. Backus
MOUNT UPTON — Truman F. Backus Sr., 82, of Mount Upton, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.
He was born Feb. 26, 1919, son of the late Fred G. and Georgia (Guyer) Backus in Cannonsville.
He served his country in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945 during World War II; his actions awarded him the Purple Heart.
Truman married Ida Houck on Aug. 2, 1947, in Palmyra, Pa.
Truman was employed by E.C.D. of Bendix; he retired after 40 years of service.
He was an honorary member of the Borden Hose Co. — Mount Upton Fire Department; Truman had served as past assistant chief and the fire police. He was also a member of the VFW of Norwich.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Ida Backus, Mount Upton; two sons, Truman Backus Jr., Mount Upton, and James Backus, Norwich; two daughters, Darlene Fuller, Narvon, Pa., and Valarie Tumilowicz, Norwich; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Two brothers, Oscar "Ed" Backus and Timothy Backus; and two sisters, Catherine Winans and Sara Leseur, predeceased him.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Upton at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Ken Wilcox officiating.
There will be no visitation.
Memorial contributions may be made to Borden Hose Co., Mount Upton, or the Mount Upton Emergency Squad.

Betty Jane Wahl
MADISON — Betty Jane Wahl, 55, of Madison, went to Heaven on Dec. 15, 2001, at Faxton Hospital, Utica.
She was born on Jan. 25, 1946, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Hanford and Lillian (Clum) Richards.
Betty attended many different schools.
She married Walter P. Wahl on July 20, 1969.
Betty spent most of her time raising her family.
She is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, Walter; a daughter and son-in-law, Wendy (Wahl) and Lyle Lewis of Oriskany Falls, a daughter, Kim Wahl of Madison and her boyfriend, Jeremy Williams, of Oriskany Falls; two sisters, Evelyn Jacobs of Cherry Valley and Wanda Aney of Milford Center; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Maryann Richards of Oneonta and Neil and Dorothy Richards of Milford; a brother-in-law, Glenn Couse of Milford Center; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also survived by four dogs and three cats that she loved dearly.
She was predeceased by her parents; by a brother, Carlon Richards; and a sister, Nadine Couse; two brothers-in-law, Carol Jacobs and Mike Aney.
Calling hours will be at Davis Funeral Home in Oriskany Falls on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.; the family will be in attendance at this time. A funeral service will be on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home. Burial will be in the spring in the Hartwick Cemetery in Hartwick.
Memorial donations in Betty's memory can be made to Steven Swans Humane Society and the Oriskany Falls Volunteer Ambulance Squad.

Alice Simonds
SIDNEY — Alice Myrtle Frederick Simonds, 93, of Sidney, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Valley View Manor Nursing Home in Norwich.
She was born July 17, 1908, daughter of the late John E. and Myrtle (Townsend) Frederick in Campbell.
Alice married Edward Simonds on March 1, 1935, in Oneonta.
She graduated from Albany State Teachers College in 1931 and was employed as a home economics teacher for Otego Central School until 1941.
Mrs. Simonds was a member of the First Congregational Church of Sidney.
She is survived by her husband, Edward Simonds, Sidney; daughter, Evelyn Calcutt, West Monroe; son and daughter-in-law, Frederick Lyle and Carol Lee Simonds, Freedom, Pa.; two grandchildren, Mark R. and Pamelia Simonds, Phillipsburg, Kan., and Kara Simonds, Freedom Pa.; one sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Rexford Brooks, St. Petersburg, Fla.; sister-in-law, Myrtis Frederick, Lansdale, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her brother, Walter Frederick; and sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Adrian Shove also predeceased her.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at the First Congregational Church of Sidney at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Patricia Robinson officiating.
There will be no visitation.
Interment will be in Portlandville Cemetery in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad, the First Congregational Church of Sidney or the American Cancer Society.

Carrie C. Krom
ANDES — Carrie Conklin Krom, 89, of Mary Smith Road, Shavertown, (town of Andes), died Sunday evening, Dec. 16, 2001, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where she had been a resident since 1997.
The daughter of the late George and Edith (Russell) Finkle, she was born Aug. 12, 1912, in Shavertown, where she lived most of her life, received her education at the Mary Smith School, and married Louis A. Conklin in 1935. They had one daughter, Bonnie, who died in infancy.
A homemaker, she was also employed for 18 years, along with her late husband, Louis, at the Delaware County Courthouse in Delhi where they were custodians. He died Sept. 1, 1972, after which Carrie married H.A. Krom on Aug. 22, 1979. He died June 22, 1999.
An avid bird watcher, she enjoyed nature and wild flowers; also baking, cooking and canning. An observant individual, Carrie had an appreciation for the finer qualities in other people.
Surviving are nephews and nieces, Dorville and Alice Finkle of Cutchogue, Raymond and Catherine Finkle of Roscoe, Doris and Don Martin of Raleigh, N.C., Arlene Gerlach of Greenlawn; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Tiffany of Vestal; and several great-nephews and nieces.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Raymond, Edwin and Kenneth Finkle.
Friends are invited to call today (Tuesday) at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 p.m., and funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at the Andes United Presbyterian Church, of which Carrie was a member. The Rev. Daniel McCollister will officiate, and burial will be later in the Andes Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Andes Emergency Squad or United Presbyterian Church.

Gertrude Carey
UNADILLA — Gertrude Carey of Unadilla went to be with her Lord on Dec. 16, 2001.
She was born Feb. 5, 1926, in the town of Sidney, the daughter of Morris and Cynthia (Allen) Goodrich.
She married twice and was predeceased by both husbands, Clarence (Smokey) Becker and Burton Carey. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Marion Perry, and a sister, Alberta French, both of Unadilla.
She is survived by a sister and brother, Marjorie Loucks and Kenneth Goodrich, both of Unadilla; five stepchildren, Virgina Hodges, Verna Jones, Nancy Lane, Alberta Painther and William Carey; her grandchildren, Melody Fullington and Mark Nichols; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Gertrude was a loving mother and devoted grandmother.
Calling hours will be Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Joyce Funeral Home, Main Street, Unadilla, with funeral services following the calling hours.

Lula Mae Swart
COOPERSTOWN — Lula Mae Swart, 82, of Woodside Hall in Cooperstown, passed away Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.
She was born June 4, 1919, in the town of Roseboom, the daughter of Welton and Lula (Robinson) Mickel.
She is the widow of John Warner, whom she married on Jan. 24, 1938. Lula then married Myron Swart, who also predeceased her.
Lula's life was spent working on farms, using horses for all kinds of work, even her trips into town.
She enjoyed doing find-a-word puzzles, hook latching and playing practical jokes.
Lula is predeceased by her five brothers, Clarence E., George, Ernest, Henry and Edward Mickel; and her four sisters, Dora M. Brown, Minnie K. Walker, Jennie E. Lane and Kata M. Mickel.
Lula lived with Marvin, Donna and Amy Mulford from 1993 to 1999, when her health made it necessary to go to Woodside Hall.
Her favorite nieces, Wendy Lyons and Amy Mulford will miss her greatly.
A graveside committal service will be held at the Bramanville Prospect Cemetery later in the spring.
There will be no calling hours.

John Kleis Sr.
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — John Kleis Sr., 81, of Dugan Road, formerly of New Paltz and Yonkers, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 18, 2001, in Valley Health Services Inc., Herkimer.
He was born on July 5, 1920, in Yonkers, son of the late Jacob and Mary Soja Kleis.
John was raised in Yonkers and was a graduate of Saunders Trade and Technical High School.
On Feb. 17, 1942, he married Mildred Spreer in Armonk, a loving union of 54 years until her passing on March 5, 1996.
Mr. Kleis was a self employed stone mason for most of his working life and worked for the Rivendall Winery, New Paltz retiring in 1992. It was that year he and his wife, Mildred, moved to Richfield Springs coming from New Paltz.
His hobby was raising Tippler pigeons and he belonged to various homing pigeon clubs throughout the area.
Surviving him are two sons, John and his wife, Cindy Kleis, and Phillip Kleis, all of New Paltz; two daughters, Dev Tacy of Schoharie, and Collette and her husband, Arthur Karpowich of Richfield Springs; four grandchildren, Janine Alescio of Schoharie, Rob Place of Plano, Texas, Erica and Mark Kleis of New Paltz; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service and interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Katherine Sapatak
ONEONTA — Katherine MacDougall Sapatak, 92, of Oneonta, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 18, 2001, at the Oneonta Nursing Home, Oneonta.
She was born in Pindars Corners, town of Davenport, on Nov. 1, 1909, the daughter of Frank and Iszora (Beams) MacDougall.
She married John Sapatak on March 7, 1943, at the West Davenport Free Baptist Church. He died Jan. 25, 1975.
Katherine was a retired second-grade school teacher in the Laurens Central School, Laurens. She had also taught at Butts Corners and Mount Vision School at one time.
She was a lifelong area resident and graduated from Oneonta High School and Oneonta Normal School.
She was a member of the West Davenport Free Baptist Church and formerly a member of the Women's Organization of the Church, the New York State Retired Teacher's Association, Otsego County Retired Teacher's Association and National Retired Teacher's Association.
She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Mary MacDougall of Oneonta and Rose Sapatak of Albany; a brother-in-law, Mikael Sapatak of Wellsboro; a niece, Linda MacDougall of Amsterdam; and several great-nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Henry F. Geerken, retired pastor and bishop for the West Davenport Free Baptist Church and prayer minister of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Worcester, officiating.
There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, in the spring.
Memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Katherine Sapatak.

Thomas DeMulder
UNADILLA — Thomas Sebron DeMulder, longtime Unadilla resident and President/Owner of DeMulder Realty, returned home to God, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001.
Thomas is survived by Eileen, his wife of 53 years; and their eight children and their children's spouses, Thomas and Suzanne DeMulder, Rebecca and Renny Mietzelfeld, Timothy DeMulder, Tod and Rhonda DeMulder, Betsy DeMulder and Ray Cummings, Tamme DeMulder and Fred DeJoseph, Tracy and Pat VerValin and Thad DeMulder. Tom is also survived by 13 beloved grandchildren, Cheyenne, Rya, Sierra, Tyler, Tosh, Tegan and Thomas (Jr.) DeMulder, Tessa DeMulder-Jones, Benjamin and Nathan Riker, Mer and Mathias Mietzelfeld, and Gabriel DeJoseph. Surviving also are Tom's brother, Lee DeMulder and his wife, Mary, of Silver Springs, Md.; his sister, Lynn Hall of Greenwich, Conn.; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Doug and Betsey VanBenschoten of Interlaken. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
The DeMulder family would like to thank all the health-care professionals at Bassett Hospital who cared for Tom. They would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Paul Tirrell, Dr. Geoffrey J. Weidner, Suzanne DeMulder, P.A., Barb Knapp, R.N., and Barb Utter, R.N. (A.H.C.) who gave Tom their friendship as well as compassionate medical treatment.
In accordance with Tom's wishes, the family will be mourning in private.
