Lawrence Wesner

SIDNEY — Lawrence Wesner Sr., 87, of Sidney, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home in Norwich.

He was born Dec. 21, 1913, son the late George and Rose Ehrhardt Wesner in Brooklyn.

Lawrence married Julia Dean on July 27, 1935, in Brooklyn. She predeceased him on Aug. 5, 1999.

He was a supervisor for accounting and data processing for E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney, prior to retiring after 35 years.

Mr. Wesner was a member of the Sidney Fire Department, Phelps Hose Co. #1, for 38 years.

He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Laura Wesner, Rochester, Lawrence and Martha Wesner Jr., Sidney, and John Wesner, Endicott; five grandchildren, Penny Russello, Richard Wesner Jr., Ericka, Matthias and Sarah Wesner; two great-grandchildren, Samantha and Nicole Russello.

Three sisters predeceased him.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 1 p.m. Pastor Kirk Darville of the Walton Assembly of God will officiate.

Friends may call Sunday, from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a fire department service at 8 p.m.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Fire Department.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Ida Walsh

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Ida Walsh, 65, of Ann Street, died on Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born on April 12, 1936, in Worcester, a daughter of the late James and Gertrude Race Carroll.

She was raised and educated in Worcester.

On Dec. 12, 1954, she married Donald Walsh in Worcester.

Coming from Guilderland Center, Ida and her family had lived in Richfield Springs for the past 25 years. Until her recent illness she had worked as a private duty home health aide. She was a kind and caring person who loved people and was happiest when surrounding by her family.

Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Donald; three sons, Donald and his wife, Marie Walsh, and Jeffrey Walsh, all of Richfield Springs, and Michael and his wife, Dawn Walsh, of Clayville; three daughters, Patricia Coll, Holly Walsh and Kimberly and her husband, Gene Stocking, all of Richfield Springs; one brother, Fred Carroll of Gloversville; three sisters, Hannah DeMarco of East Northport, Clara Hotaling of Palatine Bridge and Trudy and her husband, Leon Crouch, of Richfield Springs; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Merton Carroll.

Funeral services will be on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Richfield Springs Bible Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alan Miller, pastor, officiating. The family will be present in the church to receive relatives and friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. (one hour before the service.)

Interment will take place next spring in Lakeview Cemetery in Richfield Springs.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home of Richfield Springs.

Robert L. Holbrook

OTEGO — Robert L. Holbrook, 89, of Otego, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Albany Medical Center in Albany, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Sept. 16, 2001.

He was born July 25, 1912, in Otego, son of Charles Otis and Euphamia (Thayer) Holbrook.

He married Anne M. Holbrook, who died Aug. 28, 2001.

Mr. Holbook in his earlier years was employed with Clyde Utter Electric in Oneonta and was also a self-employed electrical and plumbing contractor. In 1945, he started employment with the Otsego County Highway Department as foreman, a position he held for 27 years retiring in 1982.

Mr. Holbrook was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by four children Claude (Bob) and his wife, Hilda Holbrook, of West Oneonta, Eugene L. and his wife, Rosemary Holbrook, of Otego, Roberta and her husband, Kenneth Constable, of Guilford and Ernest J. Holbrook of Otego; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and cousins.

He was predeceased by four sisters and one brother, Vida Pearl Locke, Edith Fuller, Hazel (Beth) Card, Laura (Blanche) Holbrook and Ceylon Holbrook.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta with the Rev. Stephen Fornier, pastor of the Milford Center Community Bible Church.

Burial will follow in the Otsdawa Cemetery in Otego.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Gladys M. Lamb

MORRIS — Gladys M. Lamb, 95, formerly of Morris, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin, where she had been a resident for the past five years. She was born in Earlville on June 6, 1906, the daughter of Clyde and Lula (Bixby) Southwick Sr.

She married Earl Jenks Lamb in Morris on Dec. 25, 1927. He died in February of 1970. She was a life-long Morris resident.

Gladys is survived by four children, John Lamb and his wife, Betty, of West Palm Beach, Fla., Lula Lund and her husband, Raymond, of New Berlin, Albert Lamb and his wife, Janice, of Keysville, Fla., and Louis Lamb and his wife, Karen, of Schuyler; her brother, Clyde Southwick Jr., and his wife, Alice, of New Berlin; and a sister, Clara Murphy, of Prattsville. She is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Two sons, Earl William Lamb and Donald Larry Lamb, and two sisters, Alice Gardner and Charlotte Holden, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held at the Johnston Funeral Home on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John Buskey officiating.

Committal services and burial will be in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

Calling hours will be on Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Karl J. Weisgerber

ROXBURY — Karl J. Weisgerber, 39, of Roxbury, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, following a logging accident.

He was born Oct. 9, 1962, in Margaretville, son of Henry Weisgerber and Jean Goodman.

He was employed by John McMurray as a carpenter for several years and was self-employed as a logger for 12 years.

Karl was best known by locals for his colorful characteristics and jovial attitude.

He is survived by his companion, Thelma Peters of Roxbury, and twin daughters, Kristina and Kaitlyn Weisgerber; stepdaughters, Becky and Kelly Peters; his father, Henry Weisgerber of Margaretville; his mother, Jean Goodman of Margaretville; stepfather, Roy Goodman of Roxbury; discipling father, John McMurray of Margaretville; sisters and brother-in-law, Karen and Mihail Branzburg, Erica and Chris Bray and Lynn and Brad Keater; sister, Enid Hulse; brother and sister-in-law, Arne and Ruth Weisgerber; several nieces and nephews, and life-long friends, Allen Misner and Bruce Swartz.

He was predeceased by a brother, Henry Weisgerber.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at Catskill Mountain Christian Church, on Main Street in Margaretville, with the Rev. Robert Englehardt officiating.

Burial will be in Roxbury Cemetery.

Friends may call Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at 10 a.m. until service time at the church.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home of Margaretville.

David Willsey

COOPERSTOWN — David Walter Willsey, 71, of South Avenue in Cooperstown, died late Saturday afternoon, Nov. 10, 2001, at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

David was born in Cooperstown on March 17, 1930, a son of Eugene David and Mary Elizabeth (Morehouse) Willsey.

He married Delores Sophia Sugarick on Dec. 26, 1954, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

A native of Cooperstown, David was a member of the Cooperstown High School Class of 1948.

On March 7, 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 12, 1954. Following his military service David attended Hartwick College, graduating in 1958, with a bachelor's degree in psychology.

He was first employed as a carpenter for the firm of Robert Bailey Carpentry. He was then employed by the Otsego County Department of Social Services from 1965 until 1973, when he became administrator for the Otsego County Infirmary, later known as The Meadows. Following his retirement from The Meadows in 1985, he operated David Willsey Woodworking in Hyde Park until his recent illness.

In 1998, he received the League of Women Voters Public Service Award for his work in the community.

David was a member of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, a member and past president of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128, a member of Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579, the Otsego Lake Watershed Council, the village of Cooperstown Board of Sewer Commissioners, the Cooperstown Sportsman's Association and was a member and treasurer of the Wedocandors Hunting Club. He also served as a councilman for the town of Otsego for eight years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Delores; two sons and one daughter-in-law, David A. Willsey and Michael R. and Tammy Willsey, all of Cooperstown; one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Edward Timm of Albany; a brother and sister-in-law, Stephen W. and Barbara Willsey and family of Otego; eight grandchildren; Kyle, Amanda, Samantha and Stephanie Willsey, Lucas and Matthew Spellman and Zachary and Ian Timm; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Caroline and Paul Carnicelli of Anchorage, Alaska, Patricia Ryan of Cooperstown and Ret. Maj. Andrew P. and Margaret Sugarick of Fayetteville, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; and countless friends in the community.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating.

Committal services and burial will be private and at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery, Index.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 23 Computer Drive East, Albany, NY 12205.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Louis M. Steffen

FRANKLIN — Louis M. Steffen, 79, of Franklin, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born May 18, 1922, in Franklin, the son of Roland L. and Florence F. (Robinson) Steffen.

He was first married to Grace Wagner on Sept. 3, 1944, and she passed away on Nov. 6, 1990. On Nov. 13, 1994, he married Esther Ingalls.

For a period of 35 years, Louie was employed at ECD Bendix in Sidney. He retired in 1984 as a machinist.

He was a member of the Franklin Community Bible Church; a life member of the Franklin Fire Department and Emergency Squad; and for a period of time, served on the Delaware County Board of Fire Commissioners. He was also a member of the Sidney Elks Club and the Ouleout Fish and Game Club.

Louie was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed hunting.

After his retirement, he played a lot of golf and was involved in several leagues.

He enjoyed the special times spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Esther P. Ingalls-Steffen of Franklin; his children and their spouses, Elizabeth Coleman and her fiance, Mark Day, of Norwich, Richard L. and Susan Steffen of Clarksville, Tenn., and Susan and George Ruple of Sidney; six grandchildren, Stephanie Casey, Neil Coleman, Joshua Steffen, Jacob Steffen, Kimberly Doolittle and Kristin Stanley; four great-grandchildren, Nicole and Meghan Casey, Dylan Steffen and Jack Doolittle; a brother, John Steffen of Bainbridge; and a sister, Mary Jane Parsons of Sidney Center.

He is also survived by two stepdaughters, Kathleen Ingalls and Jane Lewis; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service to celebrate the life of Louis M. Steffen will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, in the Franklin Community Bible Church, with the Rev. Walter Schlundt, pastor, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Fire Department or Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home in Franklin.

Vera A. Ingham

GUILFORD — Vera A. Ingham, 84, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and longtime Guilford resident, passed away peacefully late Friday evening, Nov. 9, 2001, in The Hospital, Sidney, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Vera grew up in the South New Berlin-Holmesville area.

In 1946, Vera and her family moved to Guilford, where they operated their farm until 1969. A loving and hard-working woman, Vera helped her family work the farm for many years, enjoyed the outdoors and, over the years, learned to be an excellent mechanic. She could often be seen repairing a piece of the farm machinery.

Following the death of her husband in 1969, the farm was sold, but Vera still remained active and kept her independence, enjoying her family.

Born June 14, 1917, in Cleveland, Vera was the daughter of Walter and Josephine (Thompson) Bailey.

On June 25, 1938, in Holmesville, she married Wright (Zeke) Ingham, who passed away July 17, 1969.

Vera is survived by her children and their spouses, Theodore (Ted) Ingham of Guilford and his companion, Barb Wakeman, Carol and Francis Hubbard of Guilford, Charles and Ramona Ingham of Guilford, Sheila and Robert Nightengale of Oxford, Mark and Roberta Ingham of Oxford and a "special daughter," Beatrice Eastwood, of Unadilla; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her husband, Zeke, Vera was predeceased by a stepson, John "Jack" Ingham Brownson.

Funeral services for Vera will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery of South New Berlin. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Guilford Fire Department, or the Guilford Emergency Squad, Guilford, NY, 13780, or to the charity of your choice.

Irma S. Pearce

UNADILLA — Irma S. Pearce, 97, of Unadilla, passed away Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, in the Skilled Nursing Facility of The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born July 19, 1904, in St. Paul, Minn., the daughter of Bernard and Lydia (Leapple) Schubert.

She was married to Howard G. Pearce on Oct. 4, 1937, in Unadilla. They had just celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.

Irma owned and operated a beauty shop in Unadilla for more than 40 years.

She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church of Unadilla and for many years was an active participant in many of the church's organizations.

She is survived by her husband, Howard G. Pearce, of Unadilla; her sisters, Elsa Haney of Delhi, Mathilda Hull and Helen Meszaros, both of Sidney; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Paul, Ludwig and Herman; and her sisters, Nellie, Lilly and Emma.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Unadilla, with the Rev. Joel T. Grigg, rector, and the Rev. William L. Day of Norwich officiating.

Interment will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, from 6 to 8 p.m. today, when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church memorial fund in Irma S. Pearce's name.

Arrangements are by Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Evelyn Dutcher

WALTON — Evelyn Anne Dutcher died Nov. 10, 2001, at her residence in Walton. She was 61.

Ms. Dutcher had been retired for many years; before that she worked for Wal-Mart and as an X-ray technician.

Ms. Dutcher was born Jan. 14, 1940, in Walton, to Maxwell and Marjorie  Jackson Dutcher.

She was a varsity cheerleader at Walton High School, graduating in 1958.

Ms. Dutcher lived in Walton since 1996; before that she had been in  Louisiana from 1981 to 1996.

She will be remembered for being very talented in needlework, her sense of humor and for having a heart of gold.

Ms. Dutcher is survived by her mother, Marjorie Dutcher; her daughters, Marjorie and Nancy; her sons, Scott, Pete and Daniel; her sisters, Janette and Mary; and her brothers, Maxwell and Robert. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; and her best friend, John Marinacci.

She was predeceased by her sister, Rhoda Sue Ovady.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc., corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, where family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Walton Emergency Squad in her name would be appreciated.
