Vera M. DeSilva
MARGARETVILLE — Vera M. DeSilva, 89, of Margaretville, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
She was born Aug. 31, 1912, in Margaretville, the daughter of William Scott and Ina Loffman.
She married Ralph G. DeSilva on Aug. 13, 1933, in New Kingston. He died Dec. 16, 1994.
She was a mail carrier for many years for the Margaretville Post Office. She was a lifelong area resident.
She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Margaretville.
She is survived by two sons, Gordon DeSilva of West Oneonta and Douglas DeSilva of Mahwah, N.J.; one daughter, Donna Wilson of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Gerald DeSilva in 1981.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at 2 p.m., at the United Presbyterian Church in Margaretville, with Diane Wickham officiating. Burial will be in Sanford Cemetery in Margaretville. Calling hours will be Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Lena Colasuonno
DELHI — Lena Colasuonno, 84, of Delhi and Robinson Terrace, Stamford, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
She was born June 9, 1917, in New York City, the daughter of Nunzio and Anna (Florio) Stallone.
She was married to the late Joseph N. Colasuonno on June 4, 1939, in New York City. He died Oct. 28, 1999.
They resided in the Bronx, where she worked in sales for the Hoover Co.
In January 1999, she moved to Elk Creek and resided with Sylvia Jorrin.
Two sons, Mark Colasuonno of East Meredith and Victor Colasuonno of Bloomville; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Terry Pello of Long Island, Margie Bartimo of Texas and Anita Gervasi of Long Island, survive her.
A funeral service will take place on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi, with the Rev. Steven Young Kim officiating. Calling hours will be on Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday until service time at the funeral home.
Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart.
Johanna Adolfsen
HUDSON, Fla. — Johanna C. (May) Adolfsen, 73, of Hudson, Fla., died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Tandem Health Care in Hudson, Fla.
She was born in Flushing, N.Y., she came here seven years ago from Stamford, N.Y.
She was a secretary for the New York State Senate and a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband, Benjamin; and a brother, Robert May of Stamford.

Christopher Haven
EXETER, N.H. — Christopher John Haven, loving husband and father, died Sept. 12, 2001, at his home in Exeter, N.H., after a long struggle with brain cancer. He was 39.
Chris was born in Bar Harbor, Maine, and lived in New York and California during his youth.
He graduated from the University of California, (Berkeley, Calif.) with a bachelor's degree in physics and earned his master's in education from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst, Mass.) He taught physics at Triton Regional High School for 16 years.
Chris was a dedicated, devoted teacher and was beloved by students and staff at Triton, where he took an active role in school affairs.
Chris, an Eagle Scout, was also an athlete and sports enthusiast. He was an avid runner and participated in six marathons, including two Boston Marathons. He was active in school athletics, serving as a coach for various basketball and soccer teams. He also loved camping, hiking and mountain climbing.
Chris had a special love of music. He played guitar, wrote songs and performed at numerous benefit concerts. He also had an extensive collection of music to entertain his family and friends.
Chris was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his wife of 13 years, Jennifer (McCormack) Haven; and their children, Elizabeth, Isaac and Erika; his parents, Richard and the Rev. Patricia Haven of Bradford, Vt.; sister, Ellen Maggs, and her husband, Michael, and their children, Cortney and Erin, of Carlisle, N.Y.; sister, Jennifer Ceasario, and her husband, Brian, and their daughter, Jesse, of Romeoville, Ill.; and brother, Kyle Haven of New York, N.Y. He also leaves a large extended family and a wide circle of friends.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at the United Methodist Church, at 307 Epping Road (Route 27) in Exeter, N.H.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833, or the Joe Ligouri Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of Triton Regional School, Elm Street, Byfield, MA. 01922.

Alberta G. French
UNADILLA — Alberta G. (Bert) French, 80, of Unadilla, passed away Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
She was born June 19, 1921, in Bainbridge, the daughter of Morris and Cynthia (Allen) Goodrich.
She was married to Ross C. French on April 10, 1943, in Great Bend, Pa. Mr. French died July 1, 2001.
She has been a resident of Unadilla for several years and was a member of American Legion Joyce-Bell Post #578 Auxiliary and a former member of the Unadilla Fire Department Auxiliary.
Alberta is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Chester and Donna French of Unadilla; her daughter, Madeline Jackson; a brother, Kenneth Goodrich of Unadilla; her sisters, Marjorie Loucks of Unadilla and Gertrude Carey of Franklin; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla, with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Unadilla, officiating.
There will be no calling hours.

Marcus Mensch
BENSON, Vt. — Marcus Aurelius Mensch, lately of Benson, Vt., died June 27, 2001.
He was the son of the late Irwin and Laura Mensch.
He was active in and around the Cooperstown, N.Y., area both as an actor and an artist pursuing the rare art of Pennsylvania Dutch illuminated manuscript. His work is widely collected and his father's pieces are found in museums throughout Pennsylvania.
As an actor, he and his late wife, Leah Mensch, were well-known for their work both in Manhattan and upstate New York. He toured with Rock Hudson as Merlin in a Road show of "Camelot" and was Ben Franklin in many productions of "1776," particularly around the time of the bicentennial.
During World War II he was a second lieutenant in the 77th Infantry and saw action in the Pacific and Philippines. He was awarded the Bronze Star among many other decorations.
Perhaps his most unusual accomplishment was the translation of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" into Pennsylvania Dutch. His love of this culture and language was integral to his art work and writings.
He is survived by a sister-in-law, Doris Miller of Wyckoff, N.J., as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Vera Bartholomew of Benson, Vt.
A memorial service is planned for the fall.
Richard Downs
NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — Richard Downs, 80, of 5543 Paradise Road in New Port Richey, Fla., passed away after a short illness, Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at the home of his daughter, Linda Schoenfeld, of 4047 Nelson Road in Cazenovia, N.Y.
He was born in Brightwater, Long Island.
He was a former longtime resident of Franklin, N.Y.
He was a retired cattle breeder from Eastern Co Op, a member of the United Methodist Church in Franklin, a member of the Franklin Board of Education, a member of the Franklin Rotary, and a scoutmaster in Franklin.
He was an active member of the West Pasco Model Railroad Association in New Port Richey.
He was predeceased by his wife, Alma Downs. She died February 2001.
He is survived by two daughters, Linda Schoenfeld of Cazenovia, N.Y., and Jeanette Dunivan of Humble, Texas; two sons, David Downs of Bradford, Pa., and Paul Downs of Spring, Texas; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at a time to be announced in Franklin.
Cremation was at Chenango Valley Crematory in Earlville, N.Y.

Kenneth Kaufman
DELHI — Kenneth Russell Kaufman, 73, of East Delhi, died unexpectedly Thursday night, Sept. 13, 2001, in Walton.
The son of the late Kenneth R. and Edna (Russell) Kaufman, he was born April 17, 1928, in Bovina, graduated in 1946 from Delaware Academy in Delhi and married Katherine "Katy" Monser on May 6, 1950, at St. Mary's R.C. Church in Oneonta.
Russell was employed for 35 years with the New York City Board of Water Supply as an assistant civil engineer retiring in 1982. A 1983 graduate of the State University College of Technology at Delhi, he subsequently was a technical assistant there for nine years in the plumbing and heating program while also operating Kaufman's Repair Service.
A lifelong area resident, he served in the National Guard, was an avid gardener, hunter and fisherman and vice president and member of the Hamden Fish and Game Club; Trout Unlimited and an honorary member of Psi Delta Omega, Delhi.
Civic- and community-minded, Russell was an active supporter of the Delhi Christmas Fund, Boy Scouts and Delaware Opportunities.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Katy Kaufman; five children and their spouses, Thomas and JoAnn Kaufman of Delhi, Katherine and Fred Gratto of Gainesville, Fla., Barbara and Duane Sturdevant of Delhi, Russell Kaufman of Hackettstown, N.J., and William and Deborah Kaufman of Ogdensburg; 13 grandchildren, Terry Kaufman, Anthony, Melissa, Audrey and Domonic Gratto, Shelby, Ryan and Patrick Sturdevant and Tristan, Hilary, Joshua, Christopher and Bethanne Kaufman; two brothers, Robert Kaufman of Delhi and Glen Kaufman of Hobart; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother, the Rev. Everett Kaufman.
Friends are invited to call on Sunday at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home in Delhi where the family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at St. Peters R.C. Church in Delhi, where Russell was a longtime communicant. The Rev. Edward J. Ryan will preside, and final commendation and burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Delhi Christmas Fund.

Mary J. Utter
ONEONTA — Mary J. Utter, 78, of Oneonta, died Wednesday evening, Sept. 12, 2001, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
She was born Aug. 30, 1923, in Oneonta, the daughter of Alexander and Mary B. (Guinan) Johnston.
She married Walter J. Utter on July 12, 1952, in Pennsylvania. Walt predeceased her on April 10, 2000. Mary was a lifelong area resident. She was a secretary for New York Telephone in Oneonta for 30 years.
Mary is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy Jane and Larry Hubler of Fairport and Linda and James Herring of Oneonta; one brother and sister-in-law, Arthur B. and Mae Johnston of Rockford, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Eunice Johnston of Syracuse; four grandchildren and their spouses, Randy and Denise Hubler, Christopher and Lisa Hubler, Brian Herring and Karen Herring; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, at 357 Main St. in Oneonta. The Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta, will officiate.
Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, after 1 p.m. The family will be present from 7 to 9 p.m.

Ralph H. Lasher
GARRATTSVILLE — Ralph Harold Lasher, 65, of Garrattsville, N.Y., died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at his home in Garrattsville.
He was born in Oneonta on June 18, 1936, the son of Harold Stuart Lasher and Julia (Rockwell) Lasher.
He served our country in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958.
He was married to Marjorie Card at her parent's home in New Lisbon on June 10, 1959.
During his younger years, he owned and operated his own garage and hardware store and had also worked for Neil Nielsen Construction. He was employed as a supervisor for Procter & Gamble for 27 years, retiring in 1995. He then went to work for Webster's Paving as a driver.
Ralph will be fondly remembered for his quality time he spent with his kids and grandchildren, and how he particularly enjoyed spoiling his cat Blackie.
He was a charter member and past assistant chief of the Garrattsville Fire Co. and also served as a driver for the Garrattsville ambulance for many years.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Garrattsville as well as a member of the Quarter Century Club of Procter & Gamble. He was also currently serving as a trustee of the Hillington Cemetery Association.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Marj; his two sons, Victor Lasher and his wife, Nadine, of Garrattsville and Willard (Grady) Lasher and his wife, Robin, of Garrattsville; his four grandchildren, Alicia, Nicholas, Allison and Michaela; his two sisters, Marion Turnbull and Evelyn Webster, both of Morris; and his mother-in-law, Alice Card of Middlefield. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the United Presbyterian Church in Garrattsvllle with the Rev. Douglas Gray and the Rev. John Buskey officiating.
Interment will follow at the Hillington Cemetery in Morris.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris on Sunday, Sept. 16. An Otsego County Firemen's Memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Those who wish are asked to donate to the Garrattsville Fire Company or the Garrattsville Presbyterian Church in his memory.

Ida Davis
SCHUYLER LAKE —Ida Davis, 73, of Church Street, passed away on Wednesday Sept. 12, 2001, in Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.
She was born on Sept. 27, 1927, in Schuyler Lake, daughter of the late George and Gladys Light Curry.
A lifelong Schuyler Lake resident, she was a graduate of Schuyler Lake High School.
On Oct. 20, 1946, she married Truman Ray Davis in the Schuyler Lake United Methodist Church. It was a loving and devoted union of 47 years until his passing on May 4, 1993.
Mrs. Davis had worked for the Shurkatch Corp. in Richfield Springs and from 1968 until 1993, she and her husband owned and operated the Richfield Lanes.
She was a member of the Schuyler Lake United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She was former Girl Scout leader and former member of the Snow Toppers Snowmobile Club. She was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.
Surviving her are three sons and their wives, Glenn and Linda Davis, Larry and Danna Davis and Tyson and Abbey Davis, all of Schuyler Lake; one daughter, Cynthia and her husband, Lance Bennett, of Richfield Springs; two sister-in-laws, Shirley Curry of Schuyler Lake and Ruth Ann and her husband, John Senko, of Ilion; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents and husband, a brother, Herman Curry, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be on Saturday (today) at 5 p.m. in the Schuyler Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thomas Pullyblank officiating.
The family will be present in the church to receive relatives and friends Saturday (today) two hours before the funeral service from 3 until 5 p.m.
The committal service will take place next Saturday, Sept. 22, in the Schuyler Lake Cemetery at 10 a.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad or the Schuyler Lake First Responders. Envelopes will be available at the church.
