Dorothy Hoyt

DELHI — Dorothy Hoyt, 70, of Delhi, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at home.

Dorothy was born in Brooklyn, June 11, 1931, the daughter of Joseph and Marion (Murphy) Riegler, and attended school there until she moved to Delhi with her family in 1946. She graduated from Delaware Academy in 1949, and she married Jim K. Hoyt in November 1950.

During their life together, they developed several family businesses, two restaurants — The Delhi Diner and The Well — and the Hamden Garage, with which they have been associated for the past 20 years.

Dottie was also employed by BOCES and the State University College of Technology at Delhi.

Always a vital member of the Delhi community and beyond, Dottie served for 15 years as administrator for the Delaware County Christmas Fund.

A great supporter of the Delhi Fire Department, she has helped with Sunday breakfasts and annual chicken and biscuit dinners for many years. In recognition of her outstanding service, the members of the department recently awarded her a special honorary membership.

As a committeewoman for the Town of Delhi Republican Committee, Dorothy worked hard to recruit good candidates and give visibility to the party. Each year at the Harvest Fair, she presided over the committee's table of good things to eat, which always included an enormous kettle of soup prepared by her husband. She and fellow committeewoman Ruth Vredenburgh were the permanent hostesses for all meetings of the Delaware County Republican Committee, as well as for the annual Lincoln Day Dinner.

In the early 1970s, Dottie was employed by the office of Otsego County Judge Joseph P. Molinari, where she worked for seven years. In January 1979, she accepted a position as a typist in the district office of the late Sen. Charles D. Cook of Delhi. During her 19 years with the senator, she took on more and more responsibility, eventually becoming his full-time office manager.

Quoting from a booklet honoring Dorothy as Republican of the Year he was quoted, "She was
much more than that — she was something of an alter-ego. Her unfailingly courteous caring and competent handling of the variety of inquiries that came to her telephone and desk has left her with a multitude of grateful friends throughout eight counties," Sen. Cook said. "When a problem came to her, it was never, 'Somebody will get back to you' It was always, 'What can I do for you?' He added "(with characteristic humility) that he really would never want to admit to 'all the fateful errors' from which she rescued him; nor will he forget all she 'careful and caring advice which she offered on so many occasions."'

Survivors include her husband, Jim; two sons, Brian and Susan Hoyt of DeLancey and Jeffrey and Donna Hoyt of Hamden; her grandchildren, Brian Hoyt of Dover, Del., Stephen Person, Jennifer Person and Kevin Person of DeLancey and Chase Hoyt of Hamden; a sister, Irene and her husband, Richard Affron, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Hamden Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. To celebrate the life of Dorothy Hoyt, there will be a service at 2:30 p.m. at the Delhi Fire Department.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in her memory can be made to the American Cancer Society, Catskill Area Hospice or Delhi Fire Department.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.
