William P. Havrish
SOUTH JEFFERSON — William (Bill) Havrish, 57, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Albany Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 6, 1944, in Jefferson, the son of Andrew P. and Mary (Timan) Havrish.
A longtime resident of South Jefferson, he was employed at Robinson Terrace the past five years. He worked on the family farm and was an avid outdoorsman. Bill loved to play cards with his family.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Gail Reylea; one sister, Helen Havrish of South Jefferson; and one brother, Robert Havrish of West Haverstraw; two sisters-in-law, Helen Whispell Havrish of Stamford and Beverly Havrish of Napanoch. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews; his co-workers from Robinson Terrace; and his best friend, Garritt Lockwood.
He was predeceased by a sister, Marguerite Havrish; three brothers, Andrew, John and Frank Havrish; and a niece, Kim Havrish.
Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford on Wednesday, July 25, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, July 26, 2001, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Frank Adams officiating.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home under the direction of William A. Tari.
Marta Strauss
SIDNEY — Marta Strauss, 99, of Unadilla, and formerly of Bayside, passed away Friday, July 20, 2001, at The Hospital, Sidney.
She was born Dec. 3, 1901, in Cesu Rajona, Latvia.
She met Janis Strauss while they were both attending University in Latvia, and they were married. They emigrated to the United States in 1950 and settled in Bayside. Both were employed as horticulturists, beautifying many large estates in the greater New York area.
Janis predeceased her in 1968.
Marta resided at the Riverview Home for Adults in Unadilla, since 1997.
She enjoyed gardening, reading and the company of her friends.
She is survived by her sister, Anna Cirulis of Latvia; and her nephews, Didzis Cirulis of Latvia, Imants, Andris, and Gusis Virsnieks of Seattle, Wash., and San Diego, Calif.; and her godson, Ivars Pauksis and family of Franklin.
Burial and graveside services will be at Nassau Knolls Cemetery, Port Washington.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church of New York.
Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.
Ella Sorensen
ONEONTA — Ella Sorensen, 71, of Oneonta, went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 23, 2001.
She was born in Sonderholm, Denmark, on Sept. 26, 1929, the daughter of Emil and Marie (Sorensen) Hansen.
She grew up in Denmark and received a nursing degree from the Municipal Hospital of Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1955, where she worked as a registered nurse.
She moved to the United States in 1965, residing in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. For 18 years she was a nurse at the Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn. Then she moved to Oneonta and worked as an registered nurse at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.
She became a naturalized citizen of the United States on Aug. 31, 1995.
She was an active member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Oneonta and was a member of the Woman's Society of the Church. She was also a former member of the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brooklyn. Ella also was a member of the Bible Study Group at Nader Towers.
She is survived by three sisters, Martin and Emilie Cullen Jr. of Morrisville, N.C., Trudi Maerz of Morris and Gene and Ruth Valentine of Morris; her sister-in-law, Frances Main of Auburn; eight nieces, Christine Valentine and her husband, Brian King, Jeanne Valentine and her husband, John Janssen, Charlene Wells and her husband, Robert, Suzanne Tabone and her husband, Christopher, Jennifer Valentine, Lisa Whynot and her husband, Robert, Tanya Hansen and Rabeccah Hansen; six nephews, Martin Cullen and his wife, Diane, Robert Maerz and his friend, Kelly Jo Phelan, Christopher Hansen, Michael Hansen, Thomas Hansen and his wife, Emilie, and David Hansen; 13 grandnieces and nephews; as well as several family members and friends in Denmark; and several relatives and friends in the area.
Ella was predeceased by her brother, Philip Hansen, in 1999; and two nephews, John Maerz in 1974 and Joseph Maerz in 1990.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 27, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. C. Spencer vanGulick officiating. Burial will follow in the Cook Cemetery in West Oneonta. The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St. in Oneonta, on Thursday evening, July 26, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m.
It has been requested that, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be made to either: the First United Presbyterian Church, 381 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the American Cancer Society, Southern District Office, 57 Front St., Binghamton, NY 13905 in loving memory of Ella Sorensen.
Lillian Crawford
ONEONTA — Lillian M. Crawford, 76, of Oneonta, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital with her loving family at her side.
She was born Aug. 23, 1924, in Morris, the daughter of the late Franklin and Daisy (Hulbert) Simonds.
Lillian was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from Sidney High School in the Class of 1941.
She married Fredrick Morris on Oct. 12, 1941. On Aug. 26, 1947, she married Ward H. Fink, who died Oct. 18, 1965. She married Earl Crawford in February 1975, and he died Nov. 18, 1977.
She was retired with her most important position being that of mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Lillian will be remembered for her love of reading, Bible studies, many friendships, sense of humor and independence.
She was a member of Susquehanna Valley Baptist Church in Oneonta.
Lillian is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Roselyn and Edward Clemens of Cookeville, Tenn.; her children, Fredrick and Elma Morris of England, Steven and Joanne Fink of Norwich, Elaine and Christopher Wood of Oneonta and Lawrence and Elizabeth Fink of Maryland; her grandchildren, David and Irene Morris, Gordon Morris, Andrew Morris, Brian and Jennifer Fink, Amy Fink, Kenneth Fink, Renee Fink, Jeremiah Wood, Joshua Wood, Thomas Fink and Sarah Fink; her four great-grandchildren, Thomas, Jason, Brandon and Alia; and was looking forward to the arrival of her fifth great-grandchild later this year. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
Lillian was predeceased by her brother, Raymond Simonds, and a sister, Bernice Rice.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 27, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home on Main Street in Oneonta, with the Rev. Bruce McCardle officiating. Friends may call Thursday, July 26, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m., and the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. A celebration of Lillian's life will be held Friday, July 27, 2001, at 7 p.m. at the Susquehanna Valley Baptist Church. Interment will be at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Donald E. Ingram
ANDES — Donald E. Ingram, 75, of Andes, passed away Monday, July 23, 2001, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 19, 1926, in the town of Andes, the son of Austin and Minnie (Estes) Ingram.
He married Elizabeth Stevens on Feb. 18, 1950, in Andes.
He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1944.
He was a construction worker and member of Construction Union #17 in Newburgh.
He lived all his life in the Margaretville-Andes area.
He was a past member of the VFW and American Legion Post 216. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was well known for his stone work.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ingram of Andes; one son, Gerald A. Ingram of Margaretville; three daughters, Diana T. Kirk of Roxbury, Rose M. VanKeuren of Stamford and Sandra G. Rossman of Vega; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Seager of Binghamton and Patricia Marriotti of Florida; brothers, Floyd, Glenford and Veryln; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Louise Coss, Mable Hafsdal and Rowena Spickerm; five brothers, Robert, Calvin, Charles, Bernard and Durwoo; and one granddaughter, Jennifer Rose VanKeuren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2001, at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville, with the Rev. Daniel McCollister officiating.
Burial will be held in Sanford Cemetery in Margaretville.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, July 26, 2001, at the Hynes Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m.
Contributions can be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.
Anastasia Knoetgen
WELLESLEY, Mass. — Anastasia "Stacia" Knoetgen, 84, of Wellesley, Mass., and formerly of Mount Upton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, July 24, 2001, at the Newton and Wellesley Alzheimer Center in Wellesley.
She was born July 9, 1917, in Binghamton.
She was predeceased by her mother, Sabina Petras, and stepfather, Luke Seward.
On July 22, 1939, she married Joseph Thomas Knoetgen in Great Bend, Pa. He predeceased her Jan. 29, 1987.
Stacia, alongside her husband, Tommy, owned and operated the well-known Rock Inn Restaurant and Motel in Mount Upton from 1937 until their retirement in 1975.
Mrs. Knoetgen was a longtime member of the Sacred Heart Church in Sidney.
She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Jim Abraham of New Hartford, Judy and Mike Manzo of Winchester, Mass., Susan and Emil Routhier of Hollister, Mass., and Mary and Andy O'Hara, Unadilla; a sister and brother-in-law, Jenny and Fred Petrovich of Cherry Hill, N.J.; a brother, Harold Seward of Kirkwood; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A brother, Mathew Slovak, and sister, Wilma Edwards, predeceased her.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2001, at the Sacred Heart Church in Sidney, with the Rev. Gordon Polenz officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla. Friends are invited to call at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. in Sidney, after 1 p.m. Thursday, with her family in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.
Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, NY 13838 or to the charity of one's choosing.
Mary E. Cammer
WALTON — Mary Elizabeth Cammer, of Walton (Northfield), a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at C. S. Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City. She was 83.
Mrs. Cammer was a homemaker.
She was born May 18, 1918, in Pepacton, to William and Nellie (Loucks) Matthews.
She graduated from Downsville High School and was valedictorian of her class.
On May 23, 1940, she married Lloyd A. Cammer in Afton. He predeceased her in 1992.
She was a member of the Northfield Community Church, the church's Bible study group, the neighborhood pinochle club and was a former 4-H leader.
She will be remembered for being a wonderful mother and a friend to all.
Mary E. Cammer is survived by four daughters, Dawn (Duane) Smith of Trout Creek, Sandra (David) James of Sidney Center, Carolyn Hudy of Port Dickinson and Donna (Brian) Rappleyea of Broadalbin; a son, Ronald (Margaret) Cammer of Northfield; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, George Matthews.
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 26, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets in Walton. Funeral service is at 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2001, at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. with the Rev. Delbert Ripley, pastor at Northfield Community, officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.
Minnie VanDemark
WALTON — Minnie E. VanDemark, of Walton, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. She was 78.
Mrs. VanDemark was employed as a sales clerk at Family Shopping Center in Walton and had worked there for more than 40 years when she retired in 1990.
She was born Jan. 31, 1923, in Walton, to Percy and Anna (Wolf) Jackson.
She was educated in Franklin. Mrs. VanDemark was a member of the First Congregational Church, Walton, and a member of Al-Anon where she helped many people.
Everyone will remember her for her smiling face and her helping hand and generosity.
Minnie VanDemark is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Barber and Barbara Goad; son, Myron VanDemark; brothers, Ambrose, William and Arthur Jackson; and sisters, Ruth Kelsey, Margaret Bailey and Catherine Ward.
Friends may call Friday, July 27, 2001, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church on North Street in Walton, with the funeral service following at 11 a.m., officiated by the Rev. Paul Cronin. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the First Congregational Church would be appreciated.

Leo Bubencik
SCHUYLER LAKE — Leo Alexander Bubencik, 67, died Monday, July 23, 2001, at The Meadows.
He was born in Richfield Springs on Nov. 29, 1933, a son of John and Anna (Domion) Bubencik.
He graduated from Richfield Springs Central School, where he played varsity basketball. After school he enlisted in the Air Force.
Leo was an industrial engineer with the Bendix Corp. in Utica, until a disability forced him into early retirement.
He enjoyed hunting and woodworking and was involved with the Schuyler Lake Historical Society.
Leo is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, William and Dorothy Bubencik of Schuyler Lake; a sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Donald O'Brien of Norwich; four nephews, Kerry O'Brien of Binghamton, Joel O'Brien of Atlanta, John William Bubencik of Wolcott, Conn., and Bryan Lance Bubencik of Schuyler Lake; and one niece, Betty Ann Bubencik of Schuyler Lake.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 30, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Schuyler Lake Cemetery with the Rev. John C. Young officiating.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.
Floyd Eugene Davis
GRAND GORGE — F. Eugene Davis, of Trenton, Fla., and late of Grand Gorge, died on July 22, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Troy. He was 80.
Floyd, better known as Gene to family and friends, was born March 28, 1921, to Thomas Davis and Elizabeth (Norris) Davis.
He married Catherine Close in 1942. She predeceased him in 1999.
He is survived by two sons, Charles of Grand Gorge and Keath of Walton; and one daughter, Mary Ann Tranor of Alpheretta, Ga. Also surviving are four brothers, Abner of Triber Hill, Bernard of Interlochen, Fla., Maurice of Arkville and Frank of DeLancey; two sisters, Dorothy Rice of Interlochen, Fla., and Caroline Snyder of Bainbridge; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services will held at the Advent Christian Church in Margaretville on Saturday, July 28, 2001, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating. Committal services will be private at the Shavertown Cemetery.
Arrangements were made through the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.
Alice M. Chapin
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Alice M. Chapin, 78, of Baldwinsville, formerly of Cooperstown, died on Jan. 15, 2001, at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse.
She was born in Cooperstown, a daughter of George and Helen (Seymour) Campbell.
Alice grew up in Cooperstown, where she graduated from high school in the Class of 1939.
She was a retired longtime employee of General Electric Co. in Syracuse.
She was a former member of Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, William T. Chapin; a daughter, Dr. Sally Chapin of Mercer, Maine; two sons, Gregory T., and Steven J., both of Baldwinsville; her mother, Helen B. Campbell of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a sister, Rose Mohar of Wildwood, Fla.; five grandchildren; an aunt, Margaret Church of Cooperstown; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Committal services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2001, in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown, officiating.
