Elizabeth T. Archibald

STAMFORD — Elizabeth T. "Betty" Archibald, 79, a Delhi native and longtime Stamford resident, passed away Friday night, July 6, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, following complications of a heart attack.

The daughter of the late Frederick W. and Grace E. (Flower) Tyrrell, she was born April 12,
1922, in Delhi and received her education at Delaware Academy — where she was band drum major, active in sports and the National Honor Society, graduating with the Class of 1940. Then she was employed as a switchboard operator for the Delhi Telephone Company.

On Sept. 21, 1943, she married Russell Archibald Jr., who died Nov. 10, 1970.

A homemaker and Stamford resident since 1959, Betty was a department supervisor at Graham Laboratories in Hobart and, subsequently, a teacher's aide at Stamford Central School until retirement.

Most recently she had been living at Sara's Senior Care Residence in South Kortright.

A member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Delhi, she had been a communicant of the former Grace Episcopal Church in Stamford and was an avid sports fan all of her life.

Surviving are three children, Russell (Jaime) Archibald III, of Bella Vista, Ark., Dr. Mark Archibald, of Delhi, and Lisa (Tom) Donovan, of Liverpool; six grandchildren; a brother, Arthur (Doris) Tyrrell, Delhi; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Maurice, Sam and John Tyrrell.

Friends are invited to gather with the family after 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home in Delhi, where services will be conducted at 8 p.m. by the Rev. Shaw Mudge.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son in Delhi.

Edith O. Judd

NORTH FRANKLIN — Edith O. Judd, 92, of North Franklin, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2001, in Oneonta.

She was born Jan. 23, 1909, in Meridale, the daughter of William and Polly (Barnes) Osterhout.

She married Maurice H. Judd on April 1, 1934, in Treadwell. Mr. Judd predeceased her on Aug. 1, 1988.

She was a graduate of Oneonta Normal School and State University College at Oneonta. For many years, she was an elementary school teacher at the A.L. Kellogg School and the Franklin Central School. She was an excellent teacher providing many wonderful and varied experiences for her students.

She was a member of the Aldrich Baptist Church; the Ouleout Eastern Star, serving as matron in 1975; the North Franklin Women's Club; the Onesiphorai Reading Club of Franklin; a lifetime member of the Rolling Antiquer's Old Car Club; and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cecilia and Gerald Russell, of Oneonta; a son and daughter-in-law, Maurice and Patricia Judd Jr., of North Franklin; her grandchildren, Tom and Rick Russell, and Elizabeth and Edward Judd; a great-grandchild, Matthew Judd; one brother, William Osterhout, of Goodyear Lake; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Aldrich Baptist Church in North Franklin, with the Rev. Tracie Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin.

Friends may call at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home in Franklin tonight from 6:30 to 7:30, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Aldrich Baptist Church.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home in Franklin.

Monty W. Kelsey

ONEONTA — Monty W. Kelsey, 75, of Oneonta, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born Oct. 28, 1925, in Hobart, the son of Floyd and Pearl (Bishop) Kelsey.

He married Geraldine Davenport on July 11, 1945, in Oneonta.

Monty worked for 43 years for Oneonta Oil and Fuel Co., driving a truck and, in the later years, serving as the maintenance mechanic. After his retirement, he enjoyed working in his woodworking shop at his home.

Monty was a past member of the Oneonta Moose.

He loved dancing and was a big race fan and enjoyed watching NASCAR.

Monty was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, who loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-granddaughters. He will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his loving wife, Geraldine Kelsey, of Oneonta; two sons, Richard Kelsey, of Dover, Del., and David and his wife, Cynthia Kelsey, of Waterford; four grandchildren, Shaun Kelsey and his wife, Amy, Misty Allen and her husband, John, Nathaniel Kelsey and Katrina Kelsey; three great-granddaughters, Julia, Hannah and Rachel Kelsey; a sister, Betty O'Dell, of Utica; a brother, Carman Kelsey, of Stamford; and several nieces and nephews.

Monty was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Clark, and three brothers, Leslie, George and Edward Kelsey.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St. in Oneonta. Nelson Park, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, will officiate. Burial will follow at the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin. The family will be present at the funeral home on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until service time for those who wish to call.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in loving memory of Monty W. Kelsey.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Charles Ashley

ITHACA — Dr. Charles Allen Ashley, 77, who served for 17 years as director and chief executive officer of Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, died on Friday, July 6, 2001, at his home at 380 Savage Farm Drive in Ithaca.

Dr. Ashley was born in Bronxville, on Oct. 10, 1923, a son of Cornelia Mercer (Smith) and Allen Ashley.

He graduated from Bronxville schools in 1941. He received an A.B. degree from Cornell University College of Arts and Science in 1944 and an M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1947. He received an M.S. in pathology from the University of Illinois in 1951.

On Oct. 9, 1948, Dr. Ashley married Audrey Waite, of Bronxville.

Dr. Ashley served a two-year, rotating internship at Bassett Hospital from 1947 to 1949. He was a resident in pathology at the Presbyterian Hospital of the City of Chicago from July 1949 to July 1952 and remained at that institution for an additional year as an assistant attending pathologist. During this period he was an assistant in pathology and later a fellow in the graduate school of the University of Illinois.

From 1953 until 1955, he was a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps on active duty as assistant chief of the pathology section at the Walter Reed Army Hospital in  Washington, D.C.

He was associate pathologist at Bassett from 1955 to 1967. During that period, he served also as consultant in pathology to Homer Folks at New York State Tuberculosis Hospital in Oneonta and at the U.S. Air Force Hospital in Lackland,  Texas. He was a local health officer for the town of Middlefield, and from 1961 to 1967 he was Otsego County coroner.

Dr. Ashley was a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and of the American Board of Pathology. He was a member of Sigma Xi, honorary scientific society, and of numerous professional and scientific organizations. He did considerable research and published numerous scientific articles and book chapters. He set up an electron microscope laboratory at Bassett and, with Dr. Theodore Peters Jr., won the gold medal of the Electron Microscopy Society of America in 1966 for their exhibit.

In the fall of 1967, Dr. Ashley became director of Bassett Hospital. (This position is now known as president and CEO.) In 1984, he retired but continued as consultant to his successor until 1988. During his tenure as director, Dr. Ashley was a founder of the Friends of Bassett and started the first community health centers affiliated with Bassett in outlying communities.

He was an associate clinical professor of pathology at P&S.

Dr. Ashley was a longtime member of Christ Church (Episcopal) in Cooperstown and served on its vestry and as a release-time school teacher.

He served terms as president of the Cooperstown Parent-Teachers Association; president and director of the Cooperstown Rotary Club, of which he was a member for almost 30 years; director of the Cooperstown Ski Club; and a member of the Cooperstown Youth Commission. He was a former member of the Cooperstown Country Club and a subscriber of the Leatherstocking Golf Association. He was a former member of the Mohican Club, Wedocandors hunting club, Cooperstown Vets' Club and a Native Son.

Dr. Ashley and his family were ardent mountain hikers. He was a member of the Adirondack Mountain Club, the Adirondack Forty-Sixers, the Appalachian Mountain Club 4,000 Footers and the One Hundred and Eleven Club. Members of this last organization have climbed all the mountains over 4,000 feet in the northeastern United States.

Dr. Ashley was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of almost 53 years, Audrey Waite Ashley, of the Ithaca address; five children and their spouses, Dr. Stanley and Vicki Ashley, of Newton, Mass., Chandler and Dr. James Clarke, of Bronxville, Deborah and Joseph Doro, of Williamsville, Barbara and Harry Griffith III, of Wexford, Pa., and Drs. Lucy and Philip Sheils, of Rochester; and 21 grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Carleton and Marilyn Ashley, of Castine, Maine; an aunt, Mrs. L. Mercer Smith, of Baltimore; a nephew; two nieces and numerous cousins.

The family requests that no flowers be sent. Those wishing to honor Dr. Ashley's memory may do so by donating to the Friends of Bassett, Cooperstown, NY 13326; Cornell University, 55 Brown Road, Ithaca, NY 14850; or Cornell University Medical College, 1300 York Ave., Box 61, New York, NY 10021.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church in Cooperstown at a date to be announced.

Interment will be in the Columbarium in Christ Churchyard.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.

Pennie Bellard

DECATUR — A celebration of the life of Pennie Marx Bellard, 61, who passed away on July 5, 2001, in Oneonta, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2001, at the Bookhout Funeral Home at 357 Main St. in Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, or the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, NY 13905.

Janet K. Ireland

COOPERSTOWN — Janet K. Ireland, 78, of Cooperstown and formerly of Chevy Chase, Md., died July 4, 2001, at her home from cancer.

Janet was born July 31, 1922, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Harold and Edith (Every) Hill.

She married Lawrence W. Ireland (Wink) on Aug. 9, 1941, in Broads Albun. He predeceased
her in 1996.

Janet and Wink moved to  Washington, D.C., in 1941 — where they lived in Laurel and later Chevy Chase — until they retired and moved back to Cooperstown in 1988.

Janet worked at Howard W. Phillips Insurance Co. in  Washington, D.C., for 25 years, as an accountant.

Janet enjoyed reading, gardening and playing cards with her dear friends Eileen, Jean and Audrey.

She is survived by her daughter, Susie Anderson, and her husband, Chuck; her grandsons, John and Marc Bassford; great-grandchildren, Marc, Shelby, Schuyler, Marina and Xander; dear sister-in-law, Mary Hill; and a sister, Fran Schultz, of Greenville Junction, Maine.

A graveside service will be held on July 14, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the new section of Lakewood Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.

Jessica Bookhout

SWIFTWATER, Pa. — Jessica Dawn Bookhout, 3, of Swiftwater, Pa., died Sunday, June 8, 2001, at Hershey Medical Center.

Born in East Stroudsburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Shawn and Jill (Dilello) Bookhout.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a sister, Danielle Bookhout, at home; maternal grandparents, John and Dawn Dilello, of Oneonta; paternal grandparents, Marion Bookhout, of Hope Sound, Fla., and Benjamin Bookhout, of Oneonta; great-grandfather, Howard Truscott, of Hobe Sound, Fla.; great-grandmother, Carrie Bookhout, of Oneonta; aunts, Robin Winans, of Sidney, Julie Zaural, of Mount Upton, and Jo Ann Winn, of Oneonta; uncles, Gary and Jay Dilello, of Oneonta, and Tom Bookhout, of Wichita, Kan.; and several cousins.

The Rev. John Charnock will conduct a memorial service at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2001, at the Mount Pocono United Methodist Church.

Kurt Langel

LOMPOC,  Calif. — Kurt Langel, 76, of 1021 E. Cypress Ave. in Lompoc,  Calif., passed away June 14, 2001, at West Los Angeles Veterans' Hospital.

He was born in Berlin, Germany, on Jan. 11, 1925, son of Heinz Langel and Else Laasch Langel.

He came to the United States in 1932 to live with his mother and his beloved stepfather, Uncle Bill Baugh. He grew up and completed his schooling in Wilmington, Del.

He served with the first Ranger Battalion in World War II. He fought in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He was captured in Cuesterna, Italy. He spent 15 months as a prisoner of war in Germany, before he escaped.

In 1947, he moved with his parents to Richfield Springs, where he married Eleanor Brown on June 25, 1949.

He enjoyed hunting and competing with rifle teams.

He owned K-El's Kennels for several years, breeding and showing Dobermans and dachshunds.

Kurt was a quality-control engineer at G.E., drove a tractor-trailer for several years and worked at Fenimore House Museum in Cooperstown, until his retirement.

He was a member of the Ex-POW NRA, DAV, VFW, 40 and 8 and past commander of American Legion Post 616 in Richfield Springs.

Kurt and Eleanor moved to Lompoc,  Calif., in December 2000 to be near their children.

He leaves his wife of 52 years, Eleanor; son, Kurt and wife, Denise, of Lompoc; daughter, Catherine Bates, and her husband, Joseph A. Hearn, of Los Osos,  Calif.; sister-in-law, Dorothea Moore, of Waterville; two brothers-in-law, Pat Roberts and wife Betty, of Richfield Springs, and Arthur Roberts and wife Joyce, of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

There was a memorial service at American Legion Post 211 in Lompoc on June 30, 2001.

There will be a memorial service at the American Legion Post 616 in Richfield Springs on July 21, 2001, at 2 p.m.

Joseph Lapine

MILLSBORO, Del. — Joseph Richard Lapine, of Millsboro, Del., died of cancer Thursday, June 28, 2001, in his home. He was 84.

Mr. Lapine was born in Rutland, Vt., son of the late Henry Leon and Lena Marie Nesto Lapine.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1942 to 1946.

Mr. Lapine was employed for 26 years as a machinist for Bendix Corp. in New York, retiring in 1983. He also drove a school bus in Sidney for 19 years.

He is survived by his wife, E. Carolyn Lapine, of Millsboro; two sons, Richard Lapine, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Joseph Lapine, of Oneonta; three stepchildren, Ronald Phillips, of Wilmington, Diane Phillips, of Leesburg, Va., and Sandra Wheeler of Syracuse; a sister, Winifred Burton, of Naples, Fla.; and a brother, Henry Lapine, of Long Island; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 163, Salisbury, MD 21803; or to Delaware Hospice, Southern Division, 600 N. DuPont Highway, Georgetown, DE 19958.

Warren A. Dennis

POMPEY — A committal service for Warren A. Dennis, who passed away March 4, 2001, will be held at the Delphi Falls Cemetery in Pompey on Saturday, July 14, 2001, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. J. Austin officiating. Everyone is welcome.

Marjorie A. Mason

DELHI — Marjorie A. Mason, 68, of Peakes Brook Road in Delhi, went to be with Jesus on Monday night, July 9, 2001, at her home.

The daughter of Louis L. and Lenora B. (Faulkner) Bush, she was born March 27, 1933, in Margaretville.

A lifelong Delaware county resident, she lived in Delhi more than 50 years, where she received her education at Delaware Academy, and married Gordon R. Mason on Oct. 11, 1949, he died April 7, 1991.

A homemaker most of her life, she was employed as a switchboard operator at SUNY Delhi for 22 years, retiring in 1995.

The First Baptist Church of Delhi was an important part of Marjorie's life. She served as deaconess, served on the Board of Trustees, taught Sunday school and was a leader in the Esther Circle.

She maintained a close personal relationship with several ladies who were co-workers at SUNY.

Her family wishes to express thanks and appreciation to relatives and friends for steadfast support throughout Marjorie's illness.

Survivors are a daughter, Cheyanne (Albert) Hoffmann, of Delhi; two sons, Steven (Leslee) Mason, of Delhi and Dean (Carolyn) Mason, of Marcellus; six grandchildren; her mother, Lenora Bush, of Delhi; a brother, Louis Bush Jr., of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Evelyn Owens Kelley, of Albuquerque, N.M.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a son, Randy Mason, in 1970.

Friends are invited to call today (Wednesday) at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home in Delhi, where the family will be in attendance 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 12, at the First Baptist Church. Pastor James McEathron and Pastor Jeffrey Staples will officiate. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catksill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son of Delhi.
