Geraldine M. Ballard
STAMFORD — Geraldine M. Ballard, 87, died on July 5, 2001, at Cortland Hospital in Cortland.
Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St. in Stamford, on Saturday, July 7, 2001, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Funeral services will follow immediately at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Waylen Bray officiating. Interment will follow at the Stamford Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home under the direction of William A. Tari.
Janet K. Ireland
COOPERSTOWN — Janet K. Ireland, 78, of Cooperstown and formerly of Chevy Chase, Md., died July 4, 2001, at her home from cancer.
Janet was born July 31, 1922, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Harold and Edith (Every) Hill.
She married Lawrence W. Ireland (Wink) on Aug. 9, 1941, in Broads Albun. He predeceased her in 1996.
Janet and Wink moved to Washington, D.C., in 1941, where they lived in Laurel and later Chevy Chase, until they retired and moved back to Cooperstown in 1988.
Janet worked at Howard W. Phillips Insurance Co. in Washington, D.C., for 25 years as an accountant.
Janet enjoyed reading, gardening and playing cards with her dear friends Eileen, Jean and Audrey.
She is survived by her daughter, Susie Anderson, and her husband, Chuck; her grandsons, John and Marc Bassford; great-grandchildren, Marc, Shelby, Schuyler, Marina and Xander; and dear sister-in-law, Mary Hill.
A graveside service will be held on July 14, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the new section of Lakewood Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.
Aletha Mae Julian
COOPERSTOWN — Aletha Mae Julian, age 81, died June 26, 2001, in Cooperstown.
Born Aletha Dickerson in Council Grove, Kan., on Jan. 29, 1920.
Aletha married John Orville Julian on Dec. 1, 1937, who preceded her on March 14, 1969.
She was also predeceased by daughter, Susan Lavignette, and three infant sons and an infant daughter.
She was the beloved mother of Louise Moriconi of Fremont, Calif., and Barbara Gibbons of Cooperstown. Julian was also the revered grandmother of Christine Singer, Shannon Bellum, John Lavignette, Karoline Bellum, James Lavignette, Aletha Lavignette, Melisa Moriconi, Paul Moriconi and Herrick (Todd) Gibbons.
She enjoyed church activities, travel and being with her seven great-grandchildren.
A private celebration of her life was held on July 3, 2001, at Forget-me-not Farm in Cooperstown.
Arrangements are pending for a memorial service to be held in Tracy, Calif.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad or the Grace Baptist Church in Tracy, Calif.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.
George Cochrane
DELHI — George H. Cochrane, 86, of Delhi, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Oneonta Nursing Home in Oneonta.
He was born Dec. 22, 1914, in Albany, the son of Joseph G. and Rebecca (Hamilton) Cochrane.
He married the late Elizabeth Dickman on Dec. 18, 1944, in Aiken, S.C.
He graduated from Delaware Academy and Central School and Delhi Tech.
Mr. Cochrane was a self-employed carpenter, building more than 78 homes in the Delhi area.
He was a veteran of World War II in the Army AirCorps.
Mr. Cochrane enjoyed membership in the First Presbyterian Church in Delhi, the Delhi Fire Department, Delhi Rotary, belonged to the Delhi Golf Club, played baseball on a town team and was active in the Delhi Masonic Lodge and Donald W. Gleason American Legion in Delhi.
He is survived by a daughter, Ilene (Randy) Goulette of Sidney; a son, George Cochrane Jr. of Delhi; two grandchildren, Patrick and Christopher Cavanagh; two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Ryan Cavanagh; a sister, Ilene DeSilva of Oneonta; and two nieces.
Funeral services will take place on Monday, July 9, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Delhi, with the Rev. Daniel McCollister officiating. Calling hours will be on Sunday afternoon, July 8, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery in Delhi.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Delhi.
Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi.
Pennie Marx Bellard
DECATUR — Pennie Marx Bellard, 61, of Decatur, formerly of Great Neck, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2001 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in New York City, the daughter of L. Eugene and Evelyn Barrick Marx.
She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Roy Bellard, of Decatur; a son, Jason Bellard, and his wife, Yocasta, and their daughter, Gabriella Simone Bellard, of Queens; a daughter, Anna Bellard, and her husband, Ian Stoll, of Queens; her mother, Evelyn Mahoney, formerly known as Evelyn Marx, of Del Ray Beach, Fla.; her sisters, Linda Bermas and husband Peter and their children, Laura Van Sise and Margot Goldberg, of Great Neck, and Mary Marx, of Las Vegas.
Pennie was a six-year resident of Decatur, coming from Great Neck.
She completed her undergraduate degree at Northwestern University and her master's of social work at Columbia University, in New York City. Following post-graduate work, she opened her practice in psychotherapy in New York.
Throughout her professional life, she was first and foremost an advocate for children. She worked with the Louise Wise Adoption Agency, as well as Maternity Infant Care throughout the New York City area. In addition, she worked as a social worker for more than 10 years in the Brentwood, N.Y. school system.
Most recently, she was a case worker for the Catskill Area Hospice. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a woman who spent her life caring for others. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and aunt who will be deeply missed.
Private funeral services were held at the convenience of the family.
A public memorial service will be at a time to be announced.
There will be no calling hours.

Francis W. Vermilyea
ONEONTA — Francis William Vermilyea, 76, of Oneonta, died Friday, July 6, 2001, at his home in Oneonta.
He was born Oct. 29, 1924, in Lexington, N.Y., the son of Leo and Inez (Paterson) Vermilyea.
He married his wife, Ethelyn (Brainer), at the Hobart United Methodist Church in Hobart in 1956.
In the early 1940s, Mr. Vermilyea was a self-employed farmer in the Hobart area. He also worked at the Hobart Creamery for a short time.
He and his wife, Ethelyn, moved to Oneonta in the early 1950s. There he was employed by the Mobile Van Factory and also worked as a repair technician and truck driver for the Mid-State Coal Company.
Mr. Vermilyea was a member of the Hobart United Methodist Church in Hobart.
He is survived by his wife, Ethelyn (Brainer), at home in Oneonta; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Mary Truax, of New Berlin; daughters and sons-in-law, Louise and Charles McAleese, of Beacon, and Donna and Kimber Madara, of Greene; a brother and sister-in-law, George and Elsie Vermilyea, of New Hartford; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his father and mother, Leo and Inez (Paterson) Vermilyea.
Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at 1 p.m., at the Hobart United Methodist Church in Hobart.
Calling hours will be on Monday, July 9, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart.
Burial will be at Locust Hill Cemetery in Hobart.
Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Hobart.
Geraldine M. Ballard
STAMFORD — Geraldine Maynard Ballard, formerly of 58 River St. in Stamford, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2001, in the Cortland Memorial Hospital at the age of 87.
Gerry was born on March 13, 1914, in Fergusonville, the only child of Blanche (Styles) Maynard and Coley Gregory Maynard.
She married Hilbert (Bud) Ballard on Feb. 14, 1934.
She resided in Stamford most of her life. She worked for several years at the Stamford Mirror Recorder and at Stamford Community Hospital.
Gerry and Bud loved their home on River Street where they had resided since 1937.
Geraldine was predeceased by her husband, Hilbert (Bud), in September 1997, and their son, Hilbert Rooney (Stub), in November 1992.
She was affiliated with the Stamford Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Janice (Sloan) Ballard, of Oneonta; daughters, Gwendolyn (James) Daley of Cortland, and Barbara (Ronald) Smith, of Valatie; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family will be in attendance at the Hall Funeral Home at 40 Main St. in Stamford on Saturday, July 7, 2001, at 11 a.m. with funeral services to follow at 1 p.m.
Interment will be in Stamford Cemetery.

Mabel F. Signor
CORBETT — Mabel F. Signor, of Corbett, entered into rest Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown. She was 73.
Daughter of the late Calvin and Adella Sturdevant, she was born May 20, 1928, in Union Grove. She graduated from Downsville Central School in 1945 and married Victor Signor on June 14, 1947. He predeceased her in 1983.
Mabel dedicated her life to caring for children by operating her day care for the past 30 years, caring for two generations.
Survivors include a son, James Signor, and his wife, Debbie, of Romeoville, Ill.; a daughter, Colleen Griffith and husband Garen, of Downsville; a sister, Harriett Hotchkiss, of Milford; and a grandson, Travis Signor, of Romeoville. She was predeceased by a son, Kevin, in 1957, and a brother, James Russell Sturdevant, in 2001.
Visiting will be Sunday, July 8, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m., with the family in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Clark & Winter Funeral Home at 25 Townsend St. in Walton.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2001, at the Colchester Community Church in Downsville. The Rev. Maybelle Renzi will officiate.
Burial will be in Paige Cemetery in Downsville.

Tibor L. Korenyik
INDIAN LAKE — Tibor L. "Ted" Korenyik, 72, of Indian Lake, passed away Friday, June 29, 2001, at Glens Falls Hospital.
Born Sept. 8, 1928, in Kosice, Czechoslovakia, he was the son of the late Stephen and Mary (Hamborski) Korenyik.
He was a long-distance truck driver and ace auto mechanic for most of his career.
Ted married Virginia M. (Filer) Korenyik on Dec. 18, 1949, at The Old Stone Church in Upper Saddle River, N.J.
After residing for 21 years in Otego, Tibor built his Indian Lake home in 1987. He and his wife moved to the North Country to enjoy their retirement.
Tibor enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years; his daughter, Cathy Clark, and her husband, Kevin, of Oneonta; three sons, Theodore Korenyik and wife Cheryl, of Otego, Thomas Korenyik, also of Otego, and Timothy Korenyik, of Goldsboro, N.C.; and five grandchildren, Sarah Korenyik, Jeanne Clark, Kathryn Clark, Daniel Korenyik and Joseph Korenyik.
Private funeral services were held Monday, July 2, 2001, at the Alexander Funeral Home in North River, with the Rev. Rolland Hart, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Indian Lake, officiating.
Burial will be in Otego Evergreen Cemetery.

Kalma N. Wellman
LAURENS — Kalma N. Wellman, 87, of Laurens, died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at the Oneonta Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born July 9, 1913, in Unadilla, the daughter of Tauvle and Lena (Fisk) Nichols.
She married Albert K. Wellman on July 12, 1931, in Oneonta. Mr. Wellman predeceased her on Feb. 17, 1992.
Kalma was the store manager at the S&H Green Stamp Store in Oneonta for many years.
She was a member of the Laurens Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the Church Choir and was a member of the Laurens Presbyterian Women's Group.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting and needlework. She will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her three children, Doris B. Wellman, of Reading, Pa., Gerard "Rod" Wellman, and his wife, Catherine, of Hartwick, and Dennis C. Wellman, of Laurens; two sisters, Lena Jorgenson, of Maryland, and Marjorie Kelsey, of Oneonta; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Kalma was predeceased by a sister, Doris Nichols, who died in her childhood, and two brothers, Donald
and Charles Nichols.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral
Home — 357 Main St. in Oneonta — with the Rev. Harry Myers, pastor of the Laurens Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Laurens Cemetery in Laurens. The family will be present at the funeral home on Monday, July 9, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish to call.
