Roscoe E. Conklin
MOUNT VISION — Committal services and burial for Roscoe E. Conklin, 81, of Mount Vision, who died Feb. 25, 2001, will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in Hartwick Cemetery, with the Rev. Stephen D. Bicknell, of the First Baptist Church of Mount Vision, officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
Elizabeth DeMare
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Elizabeth E. DeMare, 90, of Cooperstown, died Friday morning, May 25, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare.
She was born in Amityville, Long Island, on Oct. 20, 1910, a daughter of George and Thresse (Stetter) Ruff.
Elizabeth grew up in Utica, attending Utica schools, including the Utica Free Academy.
She married her husband of 60 years, Arthur S. DeMare, on June 3, 1940. Elizabeth and Arthur moved to Cooperstown in 1940.
Elizabeth was a volunteer at Bassett Healthcare, a volunteer for the American Red Cross, worked at Newberrys, taught religious education, was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts, was Past Pocahontas of the Glimmerglass Council and was a communicant of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, baking and bowling. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Arthur; two sons, Dr. Paul DeMare of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Earl DeMare and his wife, Patricia, of Silverdale, Wash.; three grandsons, George DeMare and his wife, Jenny, Dr. Jeffrey DeMare and his wife, Carmen, and Brian DeMare; three granddaughters, Pamela and her husband, Tim, Laura and her husband, Stacey, and Tracey; three great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and two sisters, Helen and Marion Ruff of Utica.
She was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Ruff.
A Mass of Christian burial will be on Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John Rosson officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.
Calling hours will be held today, May 29, 2001, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, from 5 to 8 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
Catherine Thomas
WALTON — Catherine M. Thomas of Walton died on Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton. She was 84.
Mrs. Thomas worked with her husband at Thomas Photography Studio, where she did beautiful hand oil paint coloring of black-and-white portraits.
Mrs. Thomas was born Oct. 16, 1916, in New York City, to Joseph and Barbara Laplaca Macaluso.
She attended and graduated from South Kortright Schools.
On June 1, 1946, she married Paul Thomas in South Kortright.
Mrs. Thomas was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, the Catholic Daughters and the Altar Rosary Society. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary and worked for many years at local election polling places.
Mrs. Thomas will be remembered not only for her painting but also for her love of travel, dancing and lawn sales.
She is survived by her husband, Paul, of Walton; her sons, Paul Jr. of Wampsville and Gerard of Walton; and her daughter, Catherine Cooper, of Palm Bay, Fla. Also surviving is her brother, Peter Macaluso, of Bloomville and her sister, Grace Kent, of East Meredith; three granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
The Thomas family will receive friends today, May 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton. Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Church of St. John the Baptist in Walton. Interment Walton Cemetery.
Thelma N. Myers
BAINBRIDGE — Thelma N. Myers, 86, of 31 South Main St., Bainbridge, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, May 26, 2001, in The Hospital, Sidney.
She was born May 18, 1915, in Bainbridge, the daughter of the late Mark and Blanche Peck Newman.
Thelma was married to Charlie F. Myers on Sept. 1, 1940, in Hartwick. He predeceased her on Dec. 7, 1985.
Mrs. Myers was a chief phone operator for the C&U Telephone Co., for more than 35 years, retiring in 1969.
She was a 75-year member of the First Baptist Church, Bainbridge, and a former member of the Bainbridge Chapter #354 O.E.S.
She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Betty Newman and Richard Harrington, Bainbridge; brother and sister-in-law, Don and Jeanette Newman, Sherburne; three nieces, Barbara and Frank Bonsignore, Karen Newman and Claudette Newman and Larry Smith; great-niece, Scarlett Newman; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Helen Mulkins, Jacksonville, Fla. and West Bainbridge, and their daughters Ruth, Barbara, Lois and Patti.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.
Friends are invited to call today, May 29, at the funeral chapel with her family in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Bainbridge or Gilbertsville Emergency Squads.
Kevin Chamberlain
DAVENPORT — Kevin Bruce Chamberlain, formerly of Schenevus, 45, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2001, unexpectedly at his residence.
He was born June 21, 1955, in Oneonta, the son of Sidney Chamberlain and Marie Carroza Chamberlain.
Kevin was raised in Schenevus and has lived in various area towns. He was a member of the Mountain View Social Club and attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta while he lived there.
Kevin is survived by his mother, Marie M. Chamberlain of Schenevus; father, Sidney Chamberlain of Schenevus; brother, Warren Chamberlain of Las Vegas, Nev.; and several aunts and cousins.
Calling hours will be held today, May 29, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. with the family in attendance 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus. A vigil service will be held at 3:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Schenevus, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant.
Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery.
Contributions may be made in memory of Kevin to the charity of one's choice.

Arthur Paul Iozzi
WALTON — Arthur Paul Iozzi, 84, of Walton, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.
He was born on March 26, 1917, in Netcong, N.J., the son of Anthony and Lena (DeSerio) Iozzi.
He was married to Barbie (Barrows) Iozzi. She predeceased him in February of 1999.
After owning and operating several successful restaurants (Imperial Lounge, Bono Pizza, Casa Bianca Lounge) he retired and moved to LaFeria, Texas, at the age of 68. He returned to Walton to be closer to his family in 1999.
He is survived by a son, Joseph Iozzi of Hancock; two daughters, Nichole Iozzi-Rutherford of Hamden, and Michele Iozzi-Gandy of Little Elm, Texas; two sisters, Carrie Bartholomew of Cadosia and Grace Romeo of Mount Vernon; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Calling hours will be held today, May 29, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Henderson-Biede-kapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul's Church, Hancock, on Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Stephen Morris officiating. Burial will be at St. Paul's Cemetery, Hancock.
Madge McGowan
MARGARETVILLE — Madge E. McGowan, 88, of Millbrook Road, Margaretville, died May 26, 2001, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.
She was born on Aug. 24, 1912, in Austin, Pa., the daughter of William and Pansy (Stark) McGowan.
She never married. She retired after serving for 50 years as a rural mail carrier in Margaretville.
She was a resident of the Millbrook Valley since 1928.
She is survived by one nephew, Gaylon McGowan, of New Jersey; one niece, Arleta Norris, of New Jersey. She is also survived by grandnieces and nephews.
Funeral and committal services will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, May 30, from 6 p.m. until service time at 8 p.m.
Donations in memory of Madge E. McGowan may be made to the Ambulance Fund of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

Gloria Kaster
OCALA, Fla. — Gloria Kaster, 75, of Ocala, Fla., passed away May 25, 2001, at her residence after being ill for some time.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Springs Catholic Church of Ocala.
She moved to Ocala, Fla., five years ago from New City, N.Y.
She is survived by her loving husband, Russ, of Ocala; her two devoted sons, Robert (wife Laura) of Princeton, N.J., and William "Bill" (wife Sandra) of Mount Vision, N.Y.; and four grandchildren, Paul, Anna, Christopher and Allison.
Services for Mrs. Kaster were held at the Jennings/Archway Chapel Monday, May 28, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Newman.
Mass will be held today, May 29, 2001, at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of the Springs Catholic Church. Burial will take place following the Mass at Good Shepherd Memorial Gardens in Ocala, Fla.

Ethel H. Culbert
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2001, in Lakeview Cemetery for Ethel H. Culbert, who died on Dec. 12, 2000, with the Rev. John Dixon Bartle officiating.
Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
Robert R. Morris
STUART, Fla. — Robert R. Morris, 68, of Stuart, Fla., succumbed to a cruel assault by cancer at a private-care facility in Hobe Sound, Fla., on Sunday, May 27, 2001.
Born in Oneonta, N.Y., on Nov. 5, 1932, to J. Reid and Dorothy E. Morris, he graduated in 1950 from Oneonta High School, where he was a three-letter athlete. He subsequently attended Colgate University and Hartwick College, and later served a four-year enlistment with the United States Navy, during which time he played semi-professional baseball at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
He retired from Combined Life Insurance Company in 1995.
After his retirement to Stuart, Fla., he enjoyed buying and selling antiques, a hobby from which he took much pleasure and pride. He also enjoyed playing golf and bridge.
Bob is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Karl Laskowsky of Dumfries, Va., and Gail and Scott D'Alessandro of Cumberland, R.I.; a son, Robert R. Morris Jr. of Elbridge, N.Y.; a brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Tina Morris of Oneonta, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Katie and Kurt Laskowsky and Kim and Jenna D'Alessandro; and three nephews and five nieces. Also surviving are an aunt, Ethel McMorris of Schenectady, and two first cousins, Robert McMorris of Schenectady and Christie Scofield of Scotia.
Bob possessed a special ability to cultivate and maintain fast friendships over the decades, and he leaves behind many who will sorely miss him.
A memorial service will be held at the Aycock Funeral Home in Stuart today, May 30, 2001, at 7 p.m.
Under the direction of Bookhout Funeral Home, a graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 2, 2001, at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in the name of Robert Morris to the American Cancer Society.
Lester M. Cooper
OXFORD — Lester M. Cooper Jr., 75, a resident of the New York State Veterans' Home, Oxford, since 1980, died May 29, 2001, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.
He was born on July 31, 1925, in Cortland, the son of the late Lester M. and Beulah (Bell) Cooper Sr.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Marcus and Nancy Cooper of Oneonta; his daughters, Agnes Cooper and Liza Cooper, both of Oneonta: his brother, John (Jack) Cooper of Minnesota; his sister, Barbara Sowter of Cary, N.C.; and three grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam and served in the reserves until 1970.
He was a Boy Scout leader in Oxford from 1957 to 1964, and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.
He was a member of Fort Hill Post #376, American Legion of Oxford and Christie Rock Post VFW of Norwich. He was a longtime member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Oxford.
He had worked for Norwich Trucking as a bookkeeper and also for Cooper Hardware in Oxford.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 1, 2001, at 10 a.m. from St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Oxford, with the Rev. Noreen Mooney, acting rector, officiating. Interment will be in Cortland Rural Cemetery, Cortland. Full military honors will be accorded by members of Fort Hill Post, American Legion.
Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford, on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. The family will be in attendance from 6 to 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund at the NYS Veterans' Home, Oxford.
Jean J. Camenga
NEW BERLIN — Jean J. Camenga, 87, of Terrace Heights, New Berlin, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at her home with her family by her side.
She was born June 7, 1913, in Brookfield, the daughter of Harley N. and Alaida E. (Gorton) Jennings.
She married Harold F. Camenga at her family's home in Brookfield on Oct. 30, 1930. He predeceased her on Dec. 17, 1969.
Jean was homemaker, but also worked as a substitute postal worker and waitress.
She enjoyed her home, her family, and baking. Jean was also a surrogate mom to three boys.
Jean is survived by her four children, Jean Marie Mussission, Myrna Joyce Yanovich, Carl Lauren Camenga and Verne Frederick Camenga; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 1, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. John Buskey officiating. Calling hours are Thursday, May 31, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Crown Hill Cemetery. A reception following the service will be held at the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston, at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean's memory to the Edmeston Emergency Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
