Theodore R. Benis
MIDDLEFIELD — Theodore Robert Benis, 90, of Middlefield, died suddenly Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.
He was born Nov. 10, 1910, in Bayonne, N.J.
He was married to Wanda Dziuban.
He will be buried with military honors because of his service in the Navy during World War II.
Ted is survived by his wife, Wanda Benis of Middlefield; his daughters, Eleanor Lantvet and son-in-law, Fredrick Lantvet of Middlefield, and Dorothy Pulaski and son-in-law, Charles Pulaski of Middlefield; his grandchildren, Thomas Quilty, Kimberly Pulaski, Faith Plutto and her husband, David Plutto, and James Lantvet and his wife, Roberta Quinn; his great-grandchildren, Mary-Elizabeth and Nathan Plutto and Joshua Quinn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Church at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2001, with Fr. John R. Roos, officiating.
At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.
Burial will follow at St. Stanislous Cemetery in Whitesboro.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to either the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or to the Middlefield Emergency Squad, care of Kevin Preston, 3539 County Highway 35, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Elizabeth H. Angell
NEW BERLIN — Elizabeth H. Angell, 81, of New Berlin, died May 4, 2001, in Norwich.
She was born Nov. 11, 1919, in the town of Columbus, the daughter of Ovid and Mary A. (Friar) Horton.
She married Robert Angell on Dec. 29, 1949. He survives.
She spent her childhood in the Columbus and Sherburne areas.
She was a graduate of Sherburne Central School.
She is survived by her children, Roger L. and Barbara Angell, Oneonta, Betty Lou and Dale Malhenzie, Delmar, Alice and David Cappadonia, Sherburne; five grandchildren, Melinda and Eric Malhenzie, Wendy Stevens, and David and Elizabeth Cappadonia; one brother, Donald Horton, Columbus; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was a cook and baker working as the head of the cafeteria at the New Berlin Central School where she was also a bus monitor. She also had her own bake shop, Angell's Bakery.
She was a member of the South Edmeston Community Church, South Edmeston. A member of the Pittsfield home- makers club, past matron of the Eastern Star, and a member of the New Berlin Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 8, 2001, 11 a.m. at the South Edmeston Community Church, South Edmeston, with Pastor Robert Wesley and Pastor Jeff McLallen officiating.
Interment will be in the Sherburne West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne.
Calling hours will be today, May 7, 2001, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
John Gedart
CHERRY VALLEY — John Gedart, 96, of Cherry Valley, passed away at his home on May 5, 2001; he had at his side his immediate family and close friends.
John was born on March 29, 1905, in Paty, Hungry. The son of John and Margit (Haydu) Gedart.
He was educated in the Catholic tradition and studied to be a priest and Latin and mathematics teacher.
He had to leave his native land under duress because of the Communists taking control. He immigrated to Canada on June 29, 1925, arriving with little money on a boat.
He worked in hard labor, including sawmills and dairy farms in various areas of Canada.
He became a Canadian citizen in 1933, but later he immigrated to the United States and became a U.S. citizen.
On Nov. 11, 1940, he married Miss Sadie Herman. After operating a painting business on Long Island for several years, they moved to upstate New York in 1947, to Cherry Valley. They operated a dairy farm until 1956, when John established a painting and roofing business, throughout the area.
After Sadie and John divorced in 1966, John worked at the business, when in May of 1970, he married Miss Germaine Renaud in Ottawa, Canada, she passed away on Feb. 11, 2000.
He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Maltby, of Mohawk; and three grandchildren, Lorraine Maltby, Daytona Beach, Fla., Erika and Adam Maltby, Little Falls.
John took great pleasure in his longtime membership in the Cherry Valley Rotary Club, which he joined in 1962. After it closed in 1989, he joined the Cooperstown Rotary, and remained its oldest member up to his death. He was also a past president of the Cherry Valley Club. He also was a lifelong Catholic, devoted to the church and supported his local parishes actively.
John especially enjoyed traveling and was fluent in four languages. He traveled throughout America, Latin and Central America, Acapulco, Cuba, Haiti, and spent numerous winters South of the Border. John had his captain papers and he and Germaine, took their 60-foot schooner "Hilda Gerald" to many ports-of-call. This ship John rebuilt himself, and sailed to the Caribbean on many trips. He also was a certified scuba diver and took up this sport in his later years.
Community members will also respectfully recall the many job opportunities his painting, construction, and maintenance responsibilities afforded.
John was also a very talented artist, having his art on display in several areas shows.
There will be no calling hours, at John's request. Memorial funeral services will be held on May 8, 2001, at St. Thomas R.C. Church, Cherry Valley, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Donald Vitingl officiating.
Donations in John's memory may be made to either the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad or the St. Thomas Catholic Church, Cherry Valley.
Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory, Cherry Valley.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, 22 Church St., Cherry Valley.
Mary Palmer
LIVERPOOL — Mary (Jones) Palmer, 81, of Liverpool, died May 7, 2001, at Rosewood Heights Health Center, Syracuse.
She was born in Poland, N.Y., residing in Milford and Oneonta before moving to Liverpool in 1956.
She was a lathe operator during World War II for Scintilla in Sidney, and was employed by the Will and Baumer Caldle Co., Syracuse.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Clyde E. Palmer; one son, Kenneth Palmer of Liverpool; two sisters, Jane BaumGardner of Oneonta and Ruth Simmons of Scotia; and one brother, Luther Jones of Plano, Texas.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 10, 2001, at 2:30 p.m. at the Maurer Funeral Home, 300 Second St., Liverpool. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery Garden of Peace Mausoleum.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at the funeral home.
Helen W. Shroh
SCHOHARIE — A graveside committal service will be held for Mrs. Helen W. Shroh, of Bridge Street, Schoharie, who died Jan. 4, 2001, at the Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill. A graveside committal service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 11, 2001, at the Lutheran Cemetery, Schoharie, with the Rev. Jared van Wagenen, pastor of the Schoharie Reformed Church, officiating.
Funeral arrangements are by the Langan Funeral Home, Schoharie and Central Bridge.
Earl Ridgeway
EAST WORCESTER — The committal service for Earl Ridgeway, who died Feb. 25, 2001, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 10, 2001, at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester, with the Rev. John Peabody, pastor of the Pilgrim Holiness Church in East Worcester officiating.
Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.
James Webster Sr.
CHERRY VALLEY — Committal with military services for Mr. James L. Webster Sr., who passed away April 10, 2001, will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley, with the Rev. Alan Miller officiating.

CHERRY VALLEY — Burial services for Mrs. Laraine Loomis, who passed away Dec. 24, 2000, will be held on Friday, May 11, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the Schuyler Lake Cemetery, Schuyler Lake.

Sheri Lea Mowers
OTEGO — Sheri Lea Mowers, 16, of Otego, died unexpectedly on Monday, May 7, 2001, at Albany Medical Center, as the result of an automobile accident.
She was born on Aug. 29, 1984, in Oneonta, the daughter of Anthony G. and Angela M. Pope Mowers.
She was predeceased by a grandfather, Kenneth Mowers; a great-grandfather, Donald A. Brown; great-grandparents, Arthur and Velma Shaw; and a great-great-grandmother, Dorothy Hamilton.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by one brother, Brett Mowers, at home; two sisters, Alex and AnnMarie Mowers, at home; paternal grandmother, Linda J. Mowers of Oneonta; paternal grandparents, Anthony and Carol Hogan of Florida; maternal grandparents, Donna Rose of Otego and James Leech of Laurens; great-grandmother, Thelma Brown of Otego; great-grandmother, Eleanor Irene Hogan of Florida; her fiancee and best friend, Andrew Clagg of Hartwick; an uncle, Kenneth Mowers Jr. of Oneonta; a close family friend, Paul Dabulewicz of Otego; good friends, Jess, Becki and Chrissi of Otego; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Sheri was born in Oneonta, and has resided in Otego all of her life.
She was currently in the 11th grade at the Unatego Central School where she was active on the softball and volleyball teams. The volleyball team for which she played won the 2000 Section Four Championship. She enjoyed playing trumpet in the school band and traveling to the Pageant of Bands in Sherburne.
She was a lifeguard for the Otego pool and gave lessons to area youths.
She loved everyone and will be missed. She will be remembered as a joker who picked on her dad and was her mom's best friend.
She was also a member of the West Oneonta Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 11, 2001, 11 a.m. at the West Oneonta Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Dougherty officiating. Interment will follow in Otego Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours will be 3 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Bookhout Funeral Home, River Street, Otego.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad, Otego, N.Y. or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 50 Colvin Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12206 in Sheri's memory.
Richard H. Frye
MILFORD — The Rev. Richard H. Frye, 72, of Milford, formerly of Oneonta, died Sunday morning, May 6, 2001, of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
He was born on Sept. 6, 1928, in Brooklyn, a son of Howard and Marjorie (Watson) Frye.
He married Beverly Milloy on Aug. 30, 1952, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Niagara Falls. Beverly died Dec. 6, 1998.
Fr. Frye graduated from the Mount Herman Preparatory School in New Hampshire. He graduated in 1950 from Hobart College in Geneva with a bachelor of arts degree, and in 1952 from the Berkeley Divinity School with a master's degree in divinity.
Fr. Frye began his years of service to the church at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in New York and later served as a rector at St. John's, Fort Hamilton Episcopal Church in Brooklyn. He also served as rector of the Lake Delaware Episcopal Church in Bovina. From 1963 until his retirement in 1991, Fr. Frye served as rector of St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta. After his retirement he served as a supply priest at churches in Franklin, Unadilla, Schenevus, Delhi and Hobart.
In the years following his retirement, Fr. Frye was active in many organizations, including the C.C.A.L. at Hartwick College and St. Margaret's Retreat and served as a consultant to the Medical Ethics Advisory Panel at Bassett Hospital.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Mary Loson Frye, and their children, Michael and Ian, of Marietta, Ga.; two daughters, Ann Frye of Oneonta and Charlotte Nemcik of Bakersfield, Calif.; a brother, Gordon Frye of Bellingham, Wash.; and six nephews and several cousins.
A memorial service with holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2001, at Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown, with the Right Rev. Daniel W. Herzog, bishop of the Albany Episcopal Diocese, as celebrant, assisted by the Right Rev. David Bena, suffragan bishop of the Albany Episcopal Diocese, and the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector of Christ Episcopal Church.
Following the service a reception will be held at the Christ Episcopal Church Parish Hall at 69 Fair St. in Cooperstown.
There will be no calling hours.

Phillip J. Baker
MARYLAND — Phillip J. Baker, 56, of Maryland, died Saturday, May 5, 2001.
He was born Feb. 5, 1945, in Oneonta, the son of Gerald and Ruth (Wayman) Baker.
He married Ann Maxwell on Nov. 24, 1962, in Newport.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Baker; three daughters, Nancy Baker, Linda Ryan and Brenda Baker; five sons, Robert, Walter, Charles, Andrew and Norman Baker; a sister, Dorothy Sherwood; three brothers, Daniel, Stewart and Vern Baker; eight grandchildren; and several cousins.
There will be no calling hours.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2001, at the Schenevus Cemetery.
Contributions may be made in memory of Phillip to the charity of one's choice.
