COOPERSTOWN — Joseph Robert Macaluso, 85, of Beaver Street in Cooperstown, died Monday afternoon, April 23, 2001, at his home.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John P. Rosson, pastor of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
Lewis Backus
BAINBRIDGE — Lewis "Fritz" Backus, 72, of Bainbridge, died Feb. 19, 2001.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Glenwood Cemetery in Afton, at 1 p.m.
Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.
William D. Warren
HARPURSVILLE — William D. Warren, died at his home, Monday morning, April 23, 2001, after a long battle with leukemia.
He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Barbara.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; one daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Robert Sovoda; three sons and their wives, John and Jacque Warren, Robert and Sandra Warren and William R. and Mara Warren; 10 grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Edna and Russell Seymour; mother-in-law, Sarah Alden; a sister-in-law and her husband, Ruth and Robert Guley.
He was a retired employee of Amphenol Corp. in Sidney, and attended the Harpursville Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Harpursville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Michael Rowe, pastor of his church, officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Harpursville. The family will receive friends at the Osterhoudt-Madden Funeral Home, 69-71 Maple St., Harpursville, on Wednesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Kathryne B. Lyding
COOPERSTOWN — Kathryne B. Lyding, 96, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
Mrs. Lyding was born Oct. 30, 1904, in Hartwick, the daughter of Claude and Grace Weidman.
She grew up in Morristown, N.J., and was a graduate of St. Elizabeth College and worked in the Ward Homestead for many years there.
She returned to Hartwick, in 1944, where she was a member of the Hartwick United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.
In 1994, Kathryne became a resident of the Robynwood Adult Home, Oneonta.
Kathryne is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Walter D. and Mary Lyding; three grandchildren and their spouses, Debra Ann and Gary Smith, Michael Patrick and Linda Lyding and Kelly Marie and Mark Semple; three great-grandchildren, Stephanie Lee Grove and Brett and Erin Semple, all of Rochester; three cousins, Ruth Yule and children of East Lansing, Mich., Dennie Drenan and family of Virginia and Peter Chamberlain of Wilmington, N.C.
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter D. Lyding Sr.; and a daughter, Grace Wayman.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick, with the Rev. Roger Yoder, pastor of the Hartwick United Methodist Church, Hartwick, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the Hartwick United Methodist Church, Hartwick, N.Y., in memory of Kathryne B. Lyding.

Leonard L. Hoyer
WEST WINFIELD — Leonard L. Hoyer of West Winfield passed away on April 23, 2001, at his home with his loving family by his side.
Born May 30, 1924, in Yorkville, the son of Frank and Naomi (Butts) Hoyer, he graduated from Morris Central School. Following a semester at Syracuse University, he was drafted into the Army, transferred to the Air Force for pilot training and served as a replacement in 1481st Engineer Maintenance Co. overseas in Okinawa.
He graduated from Hartwick College in 1950.
He began his teaching career in mathematics at Harpursville Central School, also coaching baseball, football, basketball and community baseball for ages 9-12. Summers he taught a course he developed, pre-tech mathematics, at Broome County Community College.
On June 21, 1952, he married Zelpha Card of Morris.
Mr. Hoyer began teaching mathematics in 1954, at West Winfield Central School, also coaching baseball. When consolidation of West Winfield, Bridgewater and Leonardsville occurred, he was interim principal. Instituting the middle school concept with team teaching, he remained the Mount Markham Middle School principal until his 1981 retirement.
For 30 years, Mr. Hoyer taught night mathematics courses at MVCC. He thoroughly enjoyed working with many area students whom benefited from his volunteer tutoring preparation for Regents.
He was a member of the New York State Principal's Association, American Legion Post 1376 of New Hartford, Loyal Order of Moose #1010, Butternuts Lodge F&AM of Gilbertsville, West Winfield V.F.W. His Tuesday card playing group with Maurice, Luke, Bernie and chauffeur Howard Coy gave him pleasure.
A member of Cedar Lake, he played in men's leagues and immensely enjoyed the golfing events with his wife and son, Jim. Leonard loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, bird and deer watching. He also raised geese, pheasant, ducks and chickens. He loved gardening in the raspberries and wintertime bowling.
A fierce competitor in all his sports, he played to win but when the game was over, he would shake hands and be your friend.
Mr. Hoyer is survived by his wife and best friend, Zelpha (Zee); and children, whom he always put first: daughter, Amy, and her husband, Peter H. Pavlot, and beloved grandson, Justin "The Kid" Pavlot, a name that Poppy gave and lovingly called him; and son, James W. Hoyer of Sauquoit; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Roger and Lillian Card of Melbourne, Fla.; and a niece, Judy DiToma of Nanuet.
The family extends their thanks to Dr. Patrick Dwyer for his continuous support to Len and to Barbara Knapp and Mary Ellen Kachnis for their loving care these past three years.
His funeral will be Thursday, April 26, 2001, at 2 p.m. from the Federated Church, West Winfield. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until funeral time.

Maynard Crounse
ONEONTA — Maynard H. Crounse, 92, of Oneonta, who most recently resided at the Robynwood Adult Home, because of declining health, died Monday, April 23, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.
He was born on March 31, 1909, in Oneonta, the son of Charles and Alcia (Herrick) Crounse.
He was a graduate of Oneonta High School and Rider University.
On Aug. 17, 1935, he married Alice Dougan of Schenectady in the Presbyterian Church in Cherry Valley. Alice died Feb. 19, 1992.
In his early years he was employed by Otsego County as chief accountant in the Department of Public Welfare, and later served as deputy commissioner in that department. Before retirement in 1974, he was a salesman for Colony Distributors, Albany, and the S&K Corp., Syracuse.
A United States Navy veteran of World War II, he was a radar petty officer aboard a destroyer escort with duty in the Atlantic and the South West Pacific.
He was a former member of the Cooperstown VFW and a current member of the Oneonta American Legion Post #259. He joined the Oneonta Elks Lodge in 1934, and was a life member and former trustee and treasurer of 1312.
He was a member of the Empire State Society of Sons of the American Revolution. He was a member and former trustee of the First United Presbyterian Church of Oneonta.
Maynard is survived by two sons and their wives, Peter and Marge Crounse of Penfield and Steven and Peg Crounse of the State of Maryland; six grandsons, David and his wife, Sharon, of Vermont, Jeffrey of Rochester, Brian of Boston, Steve of Buffalo and Pete and Dylan of Maryland; two great-grandsons, Grayson and Oakley of Vermont; and a cousin and lifelong friend, Perry Hotalting of Cooperstown.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the First United Presbyterian Church, 2 Walling Ave., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Maynard H. Crounse.

Ruth E. Haynes
ONEONTA — Ruth E. Haynes, 79, of Oneonta and formerly of Roxbury, died April 23, 2001, at Ferncliff Nursing Home, Rhinecliff.
She was born March 21, 1922, in Lonsdale, Rhode Island, the daughter of Alfred Howarth and Violet Turner.
Her first marriage was to Gordon Baer, her second marriage was to Robert Ziegler and her third marriage was to Francis Haynes. Francis died May 20, 1999.
She taught special education at Fleischmanns Central School.
She was a former resident of Roxbury, and later moved to Franklin Mountain, Oneonta.
She is survived by four sons, Roger Ziegler, Wayne Baer, Thomas Haynes and William Baer; and three daughters, Meridith Schneider, Lee Bollinger and Frances Correia. She is also survived by grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a sister, Casey Ives.
A funeral service will be held Friday, April 27, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville. Burial will be in Bedell Cemetery, Fleischmanns. Calling hours will be Friday 9 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. at Hynes Funeral Home.

Vincent J. Sirani
JEFFERSON — Vincent J. Sirani, 82, of Nichols Road, Jefferson, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at his home.
He was born Oct. 18, 1918, in Manhattan, the son of Antonio and Francesca (Uccellini) Sirani, both deceased.
He married Alba Marani on Jan. 19, 1946, in Joeuf, France.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the European Campaign.
He worked for the Transit Authority and Con-Edison as an electrician until he retired in 1979.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his family.
He moved to Jefferson from Brooklyn in 1990, where he and his wife resided for the remainder of their lives. He was also a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Stamford.
His passion was repairing and fixing things, which he learned as a young boy at his father's knee. He was considered to have hands of gold.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Linda Sirani of Meridian, Idaho; his daughter-in-law, Sandra Shaw of Meridian, Idaho; a daughter, Annette Bevilacqua of Jefferson; grandchildren, Leslie and Tracy Niehoff of Meridian, Idaho, Christopher Sirani and his fiancee, Jennifer Miller, of Meridian, Idaho, and Michael Vincent Bevilacqua and his fiancee, Treva Aldrete, Noelle Marie, Daniel Anthony and Joseph Roger Bevilacqua, all of Jefferson; a great-granddaughter, Sabrina Dee Sirani of Meridian, Idaho; a great-grandson, Trevor Chase Niehoff of Meridian, Idaho; stepgrandchildren, Melanie and Eric Dossett and Chris and Amber McVey of Boise, Idaho; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Cody and Caitlin Dossett of Boise, Idaho.
He is also survived by his sister and her husband, Marie and Hank Mariani of Brooklyn; his sister, Josephine Parziale of Staten Island; his brother and his wife, Ralph and Connie Sirani of Harrison; his brother and his wife, Rocco and Barbara Sirani of Rye; and many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Alba Sirani; a granddaughter, Danielle Anne Bevilacqua; his brothers, John and Anthony Sirani; and his sisters, Carmela Menegio and Theresa Smith.
A funeral Mass will be offered 11 a.m., Friday, April 27, 2001, at the Sacred Heart Church in Stamford, with the Rev. Anthony Ligato, presiding. The burial will be in West Jefferson Cemetery immediately following the Mass. Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home at 40 Main St., Stamford, at their convenience this afternoon and evening. The family will be in attendance today between 2 and 4 p.m. and 7 and 9 p.m.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Vincent and Alba Sirani Memorial Scholarship Fund at Jefferson Central School, or the Catskill Area Hospice of Oneonta.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home in Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.
Owen D. Kraham
COOPERSTOWN — Owen Doran Kraham, 82, of Cooperstown, died suddenly at home Tuesday, April 24, 2001.
Born in Cooperstown, he resided there all of his life.
He graduated from Cooperstown Central School, and served in the United States Navy from 1943-1946, and was a veteran of the second World War.
He was an owner of Cooperstown Dairy and thereafter maintained a small farm outside of Cooperstown, where he resided at the same location for 80 years.
Owen is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Anna Hinkley of Sherburne; four children: Katherine Ryan and her husband, Eugene, their children, Kelly Bailey and her husband, Michael, and Christopher Ryan, all of Delmar; Margaret Crowley and her husband, Frank, and five daughters, Megan, Erin, Caitlin, Colleen and Bridget, all of Saratoga; Owen M. Kraham and his wife, Peggy, of Oneida and children, Shannon, Jennifer, Justin and DJ; and James Kraham of Austin, Texas; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services to be held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 31 Elm St., Cooperstown, at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2001, with the Rev. John Roos, formerly of Cooperstown officiating. Burial will immediately follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Index.
Friends may call on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the family residence, 143 Kraham Road, Cooperstown.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions in Owen's name may be made to the Cooperstown Lions Club at P.O. Box #2, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 to be earmarked for assisting the visually impaired.

Leonard L. Hoyer
WEST WINFIELD — Leonard L. Hoyer of West Winfield passed away on April 23, 2001, at this home with his loving family by his side.

Virginia B. Krpata
ONEONTA — Virginia Brienza Krpata, 87, of Oneonta, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.
She was born Nov. 29, 1913, in Oneonta, the daughter of Frank and Jennie (DeAmbrosine) Brienza.
She was predeceased by three husbands, Ralph Alger in 1967, Manford Rock in 1983 and Francis Krpata in 1995.
She was a graduate of St. Mary's School in Oneonta and attended Albany Business College.
She retired in 1968 from ECD Bendix in Sidney, where she worked for 23 years. Before that she worked at Brienza's Goody Store in Oneonta.
She was a member of St. Mary's Church, the Women of the Moose, Pindars Corners Fire Department Women's Auxiliary, the Italian American Club and the International Association of Machinists.
She is survived by a grandson and his family, Randy G. and Patti Francisco and their four children of Oneonta; a brother, Paul Brienza of Oneonta; two sisters, Isabelle Tessatore of Oneonta and Frances Brienza, also of Oneonta; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Judy Tryon; a brother, John Brienza, who was killed in World War II; and a sister, Lucy Conrow.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 27, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
Friends may call on Thursday, April 26, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's School Building Fund.

Veronica and Charity Bowers
MICHIGAN — Veronica Bowers, and her infant daughter, Charity were killed last Friday when their plane was mistaken for a drug trafficker's and was shot down by the Peruvian Air Force.
Veronica and her husband, Jim have been missionaries in the Amazon for many years. Jim and son, Cory, along with pilot, Kevin Donaldson survived the ordeal.
