Francis Bagnardi
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Francis A. Bagnardi, a devoted husband, adoring father and attentive grandfather, died on Tuesday, April 3, 2001, in Hollywood, Fla., of heart failure. He was 74.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Dorothy (Oblinski) Bagnardi; his beloved children, son James and daughter-in-law Sheli of Jackonsonville, Fla., daughter Holly Smith and son-in-law Jeff of Tallahassee, Fla., and son Robert of Plantation, Fla.; five grandchildren, Tucker, Tanner and Trey Bagnardi of Jacksonsville and Chase and Lacey Smith of Tallahassee; a sister, Natalie Schneider of Nevada; his precious 95 year-old mother Minnie of Oneonta; along with cousins, aunts, uncles and other relatives.
Fran was born in Oneonta on Nov. 3, 1926, to Angelo and Minnie Bagnardi.
He attended St. Mary's School and Oneonta High School. After graduation he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. In 1952 he graduated from Champlain College in Plattsburgh with a bachelor's degree. He finished his education at the State University College at Oneonta and State University at Albany.
In 1956, with a master's degree in education, he began his teaching career. He taught sixth grade in Albany, Hudson and Cobleskill. In 1959, he went to Florida where he became a school official in the truancy and attendance department with the Dade County Board of Education in Miami and Miami Beach. He retired from education in 1990.
He was a life member of the Oneonta Elks Club and a member of the American Legion for many years. He enjoyed visiting Oneonta in the summer months.
A private family service was held in Hollywood, Fla., followed by cremation.
A memorial service in Oneonta is pending.
The family in Florida thanks all who have shared in their time of sorrow.
Helen E. Musser
SARATOGA SPRINGS — Helen E. Musser, of Meadow Lane, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at the Wesley Health Care Center, Lawrence Street. She was 66.
Born on Aug. 23, 1934, in Richfield Springs, she was the daughter of Dorothy (Drake) Pierce Rose of Laurens and the late Harold Pierce.
A resident of Saratoga Springs for the past 19 years, she worked as a sales clerk for various clothing stores in the Albany area for many years, most recently for the Flemington Fur Co. in Malta.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Saratoga Springs.
She loved her two canine companions, Heidi and Heidi Too, and especially enjoyed her family, friends, gardening, fashion, sewing and gourmet cooking.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Richard J. Musser of Saratoga Springs; two daughters, Susan E. Hotaling and her husband, Mark, of Saratoga Springs and Sally Wilson and her husband, Mark, of McKinney, Texas; three grandchildren, John T. and Andrew J. Wilson of McKinney, Texas, and Amy E. Hotaling of Saratoga Springs; five sisters, Ann Crawford of Otego, Patricia Lull of Laurens, Sarah Draght of Rochester, Rosemary Elderkin of Oneonta and Dorothy Conklin of Leonardsville; one brother, Lylse Rose, of Laurens; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2001, at the United Methodist Church, corner of Fifth Avenue and Henning Road. Burial will be at a later date in the Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. Friends may call from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the narthyx of the United Methodist Church before the service. Following services, a gathering of family and friends will be held in the Wilson Fellowship Hall of the church.

Clara M. St. John
SIDNEY — Clara M. St. John, 78, of Sidney, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at her home.
She was born Feb. 26, 1923, daughter of the late Lloyd and Catherine Walsh Melbourne in Rahway, N.J.
Clara married Larry A. St. John on March 1, 1941, in Media, Pa. He predeceased her on Nov. 28, 1992.
She was employed by E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney, as an inspector, when she retired in 1983.
Mrs. St. John was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sidney.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Merritt and Patti St. John, of Sidney; five grandsons, John St. John of Sidney, Howard Bullet of Tumwater, Wash., Sean St. John of Clovis, N.M, Ryan St. John of Bethlehem, Pa., and Noel St. John of Sidney; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Veeck of Clark, N.J.; daughter-in-law, Donna St. John of Sidney; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is also predeceased by son, Larry St. John; and sister, Doris Wirth.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Sidney, officiating. Friends may call Monday; the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Sidney.

Beatrice H. Evans
BAINBRIDGE — Beatrice Evans, 82, of Bainbridge, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at her home.
She was born March 19, 1919, daughter of the late Ira and Emily Ottaway Denton Hubbard in Middlefield.
She was employed as bookkeeper for Farm Credit and for York Modern for many years, and as a site manager for Chenango County Nutrition Site for 60 Plus in Bainbridge.
Bea is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Connie Evans, of Bainbridge; two grandsons, Brendan and Bryan Evans, of Bainbridge; one granddaughter, Lindsay Evans, of Bainbridge; one sister, Marjorie Whiteman, of Middlefield; six nieces, Winifred Buckingham of Croghan, Golda Fairchild of New Jersey, Joan Wilkinson of South Elgin, Ill., Ethelyn Ottzen of Otego, Emily Longtin of Otego and Rhoda Corkwell of Middlefield; five nephews, Oakley Whiteman of Westville, Wendall Whiteman of Roseboom, Geary Whiteman of Schenevus, Lawrence Roseboom, of Westford and Herbert Roseboom of East Worcester.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Ethelyn Roseboom and Marion Whiteman.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, April 22, 2001, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 3 p.m.

Margaret Ranker
COOPERSTOWN — Margaret A. (VerNooy) Ranker, 77, of Cooperstown, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare, after a lengthy illness.
She was born Nov. 16, 1923, in Andes, daughter of Demmon and Glady (Condon) VerNooy.
On Aug. 20, 1949, Margaret married Joseph Ranker in Cliffside Park, N.J.
Margaret is survived by her husband, Joseph; a son, Joseph F., and granddaughter, Alyssa, of Leonia, N.J.; three sisters, Erma Martin and her husband, Wendell, of South Kortright, Helen Walker and her husband, Donald, of Fullerton, Calif., and Gladys Rowe of Morris; two brothers-in-law, David Ranker and his wife, Jeanne, of Dearborn, Mich., and Richard Ranker and his wife, Doris, of Dumont, N.J.; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Margaret was predeceased by brothers, Demmon (Pete), Wilber and John; sisters, Hattie, Aloha and Maebel; and sister-in-law, Ruth Ranker.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas Burleigh, chaplain of Bassett Healthcare, officiating.
At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

John O. Lusins
ONEONTA — Dr. John O. Lusins of Glensbridge Road, Oneonta, passed away Friday, April 13, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Marie; his children, Gillian Marie, 36, Noelle Louise, 34, Carl Baessler, 32, John O. III, 27, and Matthew Ronald, 24; his daughter-in-law, Jennifer Lucille; and his grandchild, Alex, 4.
Dr. Lusins was born in Riga, Latvia, on Dec. 15, 1939. After being displaced from his home in Riga, Latvia, by the Russian occupation of Latvia, he and his mother, Elza Lusins, traveled as refugees through Poland and East Germany. His father, who was also a doctor, remained in Latvia, in military service. Young John and his mother then immigrated to Greensboro, N.C., and later moved to New York City in 1956.
Dr. Lusins was placed in the Julia Dyckman Andrus Home for Children in Yonkers, while his mother entered nursing school.
He graduated from Charles E. Gorton High School in 1958, where he met his future wife, Anna Marie.
He graduated from Columbia University in 1963, his undergraduate career extended as the result of a yearlong hiatus in Germany during the Berlin Airlift as part of the Air Force Reserve.
He was captain of the Varsity Crew Team at Columbia.
He married Anna Marie in 1963, and graduated from Albany Medical College in 1967.
He did his internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Manhattan, working alongside his mother, a registered nurse at the hospital. He did his residency at St. Luke's Hospital, New York University, Mount Sinai Medical Center, and became chief resident of neurology in 1972. He was an associate professor of neurology at Mount Sinai Medical College, Boulevard Hospital, New York Hospital for Joint Disease, assumed a teaching appointment at Mount Sinai and received the Mount Sinai Journal of Medicine Prize in 1975.
He was board-approved by the American Board of Physicians in internal medicine and certified in nuclear medicine, neurology and psychiatry.
He was a contributing editor to the Sinai Journal of Medicine and was on the editorial board of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine and the medical journal Spine. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Physicians and the British Royal Society of Medicine.
He co-authored more than 40 publications in various medical journals on a variety of subjects, including the American Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, and Neurosurgery.
He was the founder and managing partner of Computerized Medical Associates of New York, the first private CAT Scanner in the New York area.
Dr. Lusins and his family moved to Oneonta in 1983, and he became attending neurologist at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital. He formed Catskill Neurosciences and Radiology Associates in 1993. He was a past member of Fox Hospital's Board of Trustees, past president and vice president of the Otsego County Medical Society and past president, vice president, secretary and treasurer of A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital. He was involved in a variety of other projects and fund raising for the hospital.
Aside from his work and his family, Dr. Lusins had many varied interests, which he shared with his family and his wide circle of friends. He was a passionate lover of wine, and had an enormous knowledge of French and German wine. He was currently the delegue general of the Northeast of the Confrerie Des Chevaliers Du Tastevin, an international wine society devoted to Burgundy, which he joined in 1986, and was a commandeur in the Commanderie de Bordeaux, a Bordeaux wine society, which he joined in 1988. He was also a member of the New York Chapter of the German Wine Society.
He and his wife shared a great love of horses, and he was an active member and on the board of directors of the Old Chatham Hunt, in Old Chatham. He was a member of the Oneonta Rotary Club and former president of the Orpheus Theatre Co. in Oneonta. He loved classical music, country music legends such as Johnny Cash, and had recently attended three Waylon Jennings concerts in three days in Las Vegas with his youngest son, Matthew Lusins.
He collected trains, books, loved football, was a talented amateur photographer, and earlier in his life was an avid scuba diver, an interest he shared with Anna Marie, and most recently with his children.
He was a devoted and loving father, a brilliant and caring physician, a loyal friend and an important and deeply concerned member of the Oneonta community. He will be sorely missed. "The measure of a man's life is the well spending of it, and not the length," Plutarch.
The wake will be held at Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, April 16, 2001. The funeral will be held at St. Mary's, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2001.

Kathryn Richards
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Kathryn M. Richards, 86, of Cooperstown, died early Saturday morning, April 14, 2001, at The Meadows.
She was born on Aug. 3, 1914, in Hobart, a daughter of William M. and Edith (Johnson) Walrath.
She married Harold P. Richards on Nov. 20, 1935, on Blenheim Hill in Edmeston. Mr. Richards died on Oct. 13, 1994.
Kathryn received her education in schools in Edmeston and Burlington Flats.
In 1949, she and her husband moved to Cooperstown, where she was employed as a cook by Dr. H.F.S. Cooper. She retired in the late 1960s and devoted the rest of her life to raising her family.
Kathryn is survived by four sons, Harry R. Richards of Cooperstown, Lawrence D. Richards and his wife, Shari, of Cooperstown, Harry M. Richards and his wife, Jeanie, of Okeechobee, Fla., and Harold M. Richards and his wife, Dee, of Crystal River, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jane Richards of Cooperstown; one sister, Mrs. Helen Brigham of Toddsville; three brothers, George Walrath and his wife, Shirley, of Cooperstown, William Walrath and his wife, Marion, of Maryland and Earl Walrath and his wife, Barbara, of Cooperstown and North Carolina; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by one son, Carl L. Richards, who died March 30, 2001; two brothers, Robert L. Walrath and Lester Walrath; and one sister, Mrs. Mary House.
A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John C. Young officiating.
The committal service and burial will take place at a later date in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday afternoon from 1 p.m. until service time, when Kathryn's family will be in attendance.

Hazel Beeching
PITTSFIELD — Hazel Beeching, 77 years old, of Pittsfield, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, in Westerly, R.I.
She was born March 21, 1924, in Oxford, the daughter of Waldo and Juna (Money) Becraft.
She married Joseph R. Beeching on Dec. 11, 1942. He died March 25, 1990.
She spent her childhood in the Norwich and Oxford areas.
She was a graduate of Oxford Central School.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Raymond (JoAnne) Gould, Pittsfield; two sons, James R. Beeching of Brewerton, and Douglas G. Beeching, San Benito, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lillian Germain of Albany; and several nieces and nephews.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, New Berlin.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Dwight Kenyon officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Raymond Goodchild
ANDES — Raymond Goodchild, 86, of Tremperskill Road, Andes, died on Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Bassett Hospital.
Ray was born Oct. 4, 1914, in Omer, Mich., the son of William and Ethel Jersey Goodchild.
He came to Andes in his youth and has been a resident of this area since.
Ray served in the Army during World War II and was a past member of the Andes American Legion post. He was a retired dairy farmer.
Surviving are two brothers, Wyman Goodchild of Walton and David Goodchild of Arkville; a sister, Mary Winner of Andes; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Jester-Stanley Funeral Home, Andes, with the Rev. Martha Vinck, pastor of Andes United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Shavertown Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time.
