Emma Young All

SOUTH WORCESTER — Emma Young All, 85, died March 14, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born Sept. 5, 1915, at Broome Center, the daughter of Henry and Sarah (Bull) Young.

Emma married Abram All on Feb. 23, 1931, at the West Conesville Methodist Church. Abram died March 6, 1966.

She is survived by a son, Raymond Ahl and his wife, Dorothy, of Saugerties; and a daughter, Evelyn G. Castle and her husband, Gene, of Gilboa. Emma was predeceased by her daughter, Joyce A. Janezic, on May 20, 1999, in Virginia. Also surviving are a granddaughter, Sandra Castle Andrews of Michigan; a stepgranddaughter, Bonnie Davis of Saugerties; a stepgrandson, Robert Lewis of Saugerties; a sister, Evelyn (Young) Haskin of West Conesville; two great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Emma's sister, Hattie Conine, died June 30, 1991.

Friends may call at the William A. Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main St. (corner of Liberty Street), Stamford, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2001. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, March 17, 2001, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Pastor Robert Nash officiating. Interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in  Jefferson at a later date.

Donations in Emma's name may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice in Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Rowlinda Livengood

CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Rowlinda G. Livengood, 84, of Cherry Valley, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2001, in Petersburg, Va., after a long illness.

She was born Oct. 12, 1916, in New York City, the daughter of Rowland and Anna (Dryer) Bayldon.

She married Faversham W. Livengood in New York City on Oct. 31, 1936; he survives.

Mrs. Livengood attended school in  Washington Township and Westwood, N.J.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Hester Livengood of St. Johnsville and Rowlinda Copeland and her husband, Joseph, of Wakefield, Va.; one grandson, Alan Copeland of Martinsville, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 18, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Pastor Lyman  Johnson officiating. Spring burial will take place in the Cherry Valley Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2001, at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Livengood's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

John J. Martin

BAINBRIDGE — John J. Martin, 38, of Bainbridge, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born July 3, 1962, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Francis and Florence Grippe Martin.

John married Laura M. McKenzie on April 14, 1990, in Philadelphia, Pa.

He owned and operated a small family farm.

John was a member of the Bainbridge Lions Club and the United Methodist Church of Bainbridge.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Laura M. Martin of Bainbridge; his mother, Florence Martin of Philadelphia, Pa.; his son, Samuel Martin of Bainbridge; three daughters, Kaitlyn, Rebecca and Annalouise Martin of Bainbridge; his sister, Eileen Waterman of Wilmington, Del.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 19, 2001, at the United Methodist Church of Bainbridge at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Tony Hipes, pastor, officiating. Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be in West Bainbridge Cemetery, West Bainbridge, in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad or the United Methodist Church of Bainbridge.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Sean B. Townsend

PHELPS — Sean B. Townsend, 11, of Phelps, passed away March 14, 2001, at home.

He was born in Geneva on June 2, 1989, the son of Peter J. Townsend and Amy J. Buel.

He attended the sixth grade at Midlakes Middle School.

He is survived by his parents, Peter Townsend and Amy Townsend; his uncles, Dennis (Laura) Buel of  Pennsylvania, Duane Bull of Georgia, Mike (Pam) Townsend of Penn Yan, Mark (Debbie) of Allison, Tim (Penny) Hamilton of Ithaca and Richard Clark; an aunt, Tammy Buel, and uncle, Hank, Siedzieniewski of Arizona; cousins, Paul, Daniel and Shawn Buel and Elizabeth Shuck; sisters, Brianna Champlin of Penn Yan, Allison Buel of Phelps and Jammie and Emily Clark; his paternal grandmother, Mary Anne Townsend of Penn Yan; and maternal grandparents, Leslie (Roma) Buel of Gilboa.

Calling hours will be held 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Weldon Funeral Home, Penn Yan, and Sunday, March 18, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the United Church of Phelps. Funeral service will be Monday, March 19, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Phelps, with the Rev. Shirley Filiatreau officiating. There will be a time of fellowship immediately after the 11 a.m. service at the United Church of Phelps.

Burial will be private at Lakeview Cemetery, Penn Yan.

Memorials can be made to C.U.R.E., National Children's Cancer Society, Strong Children's Hospital or Ronald McDonald House.

Rose Bower

HUDSON — Rose DeWitt Bower, age 93, died on Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at the Community Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

She was a resident of Bethany Village since 1977, and an active member of its tenants association for many years.

Mrs. Bower was born in Napanoch on Dec. 6, 1907, the daughter of the late Louisa and Charles Wesley DeWitt. Her ancestors came over on the Mayflower.

She married Charles Bower on Sept. 3, 1929. He predeceased her in 1976.

She was a member of the Bloomville Methodist Church, Bloomville Ladies Auxiliary and Ladies Home Bureau. She worked for many years at Morton's Department Store in Cairo.

Mrs. Bower is survived by her daughter, Jeannine, of New York City; and sons, Charles 'Skip' Bower and Daniel Bower and his wife, JoAnn, of Bloomville and Michael and his wife, Margaret Bower, of Coxsackie. Her grandchildren include Christie Kirch of Leeds, Jon Bower of Coxsackie, Ann Bower  Jackson of Grand Rapids, Mich., Alice Bower-Snyder of Syracuse, Patricia Bower and Steven Bower of Delhi, Mitzi Sackett, "Pip" Bower and Jeff Bower of Bloomville, Debra-Jo Ryan of Phoenicia and Diane Jonsson and Karl Bower of Florida. She is also survived by 21 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Downey Lang Bower; a son, Karl Bower; a granddaughter, Darlene; and a great-grandson, Karl John Peters.

The family is planning a spring interment of her cremated remains in the Kerhonkson Cemetery. Relatives and friends will be notified of the date and time.

For those who desire, a memorial contribution may be made in Rose's name to the Community Hospice Inc. or the Coxsackie Rescue Squad.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Sopris Funeral Home, Inc., Route 9W, Coxsackie, N.Y.

Isabel Schall

DELHI — Isabel Schall, 91, a life-long Delhi area resident, passed away Friday morning, March 16, 2001, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where she had been a resident since January 1998.

She was born Jan. 13, 1910, in Bovina, the daughter of Thomas A. and Mary (King) Schall.

A 1927 graduate of Hilton Memorial High School in Andes, she attended Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, graduating in 1931.

Isabel married Henry Schall on April 17, 1938, in Delhi. Mr. Schall passed away July 11, 1990.

She taught elementary school for many years, first at the Dry Brook School in Meredith then at Delaware Academy in Delhi.

She was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church in Delhi.

Surviving are her brother, John E. Raitt of Delhi; a sister, Mary J. Raitt, of College Point; three sons, Richard Schall of Shelburne, N.H., Lynn (Monique) Schall of Ellington, Conn., and Lee (Noeme) Schall of the Philippines; a niece, Jan Raitt, of Delhi; seven grandchildren and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a son, Thomas Schall, on Aug. 25, 1950; and a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Schall.

Friends are invited to call Saturday, March 17, 2001, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the First Presbyterian Church, Clinton Street, Delhi, on Sunday, March 18, 2001, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Arvid Whitmore officiating.

Burial will be later in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions may be made in Isabel's memory to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son, Delhi.

Helen Briggs

DAVENPORT CENTER — Helen I. Briggs, 67, of Davenport Center, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Oct. 13, 1933, in Hobart, the daughter of Stephen and Blanche (Marschilok) Doroski.

She married Carlton Briggs in Oneonta on Sept. 25, 1955. He survives, as does a son, David, of East Meredith; grandchildren, Adam, Ashley and Christine Briggs of East Meredith; her father, Stephen Doroski of Delhi; two brothers, Gene and his wife, Pat Doroski of Fort Edward and John Doroski of Davenport; a sister, Marjorie Moore, of Davenport Center; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Briggs had been employed as a bookkeeper and payroll clerk at Elmore Milling Co., Oneonta, and from 1971 until 1995 as a payroll clerk at the State University College of Oneonta.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, March 19, 2001, at 1 p.m. at MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with the Rev. Traci Martin of Davenport Presbyterian Church officiating.

Calling hours will be on Sunday, March 18, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the spring at the Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the East Meredith First Responders.

Arrangements are with MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Arthur C. Johnson

MARGARETVILLE — A memorial funeral Mass will be celebrated for Arthur C.  Johnson at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 19, 2001, at Sacred Heart Church in Margaretville.

Mr.  Johnson died Dec. 12, 2001, at Margaretville.

The Mass will be celebrated by the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Lyle Martin

MARGARETVILLE — Lyle Patrick Martin, 95, of Margaretville, died March 19, 2001, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville, where he had been a resident since June 25, 1997.

He was born March 15, 1906, in New York City, the son of Lyle T. Martin and Delia Brady.

He married Evelyn Haug in September 1929, in New York City. She died Feb. 27, 1978.

He served Feb. 16, 1943, to Nov. 11, 1945, in the United States Army during World War II. He served in battles at Ardennes, central Europe, Normandy, Rhineland and northern France.

He was a retired supervisor for A&P Stores on Long Island.

He has been a resident of Margaretville since 1965, when he moved there with his wife from Glen Cove, Long Island.

He was a member of the Middletown American Legion Post 216 and the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville.

Hunting and fishing was an enjoyable part of Pat's life.

He is survived by a niece, Colleen P. McDaniel of Margaretville; and a sister-in-law, Betty B. Martin of Margaretville.

Pat was the last of the Martin family to die, being predeceased by one brother, James G. Martin, who died Nov. 15, 1994, in Margaretville; and two sisters, May Adamson, who died in Hillsboro, Ore., on Dec. 16, 1960, and Warena Martin of Margaretville, who died Jan. 1, 1991.

A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, March 24, 2001, at 12:30 p.m., at the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell as the celebrant. Burial will be in the Sanford Cemetery, Margaretville.

There are no formal calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

James B. Gray

MASONVILLE — James B. Gray, 47, of Route 206, Masonville, passed away Sunday evening, March 18, 2001, at his residence.

James was born July 1, 1953, in Sidney, the son of Eldred and May Cutting Gray.

He is survived by his parents, Eldred and May Gray of Masonville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Marvin and Joann Gray of Masonville and Roger and Kate Gray of Caledonia; and a sister, Sherry Andrews of Sidney. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral services or calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, or to the Louis Hager Cancer Center, Bassett Health Care Center, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Mary M. Lawrie

UTICA — Mrs. Mary M. (Amitrano) Lawrie, age 92, a native of Oneonta, and a longtime resident of Utica, passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2001, at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica.

Born in Oneonta on Aug. 28, 1908, Mary was the daughter of the late Michael and Jane (Balzano) Amitrano. She was raised and educated locally.

On June 14, 1930, she married Mack Vincent Lawrie, with whom she shared a 53-year union until his passing on Feb. 9, 1984.

In 1940, Mary moved to Utica with her husband and family. Through the community-funded Manpower Project, she furthered her studies at Utica's Faxton Hospital. During her 35 years as a nurse, she was employed with several different medical facilities and nursing homes in the Utica area. She concluded her successful nursing career and her professional lifetime of caring for others when she retired from the Genesee Nursing Home in 1978.

She was a parishioner of St. Francis De Sales Church in Utica.

Mrs. Lawrie is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert and Frances Lawrie of Mountainside, N.J., and Michael E. Lawrie of Mohawk. Her survivors also include her grandchildren, Michael Lawrie Jr. of Otego, Michelle Lawrie of New Hartford, Laura Lawrie and Matthew Schuler of Otego, Nancy and Russell Esterline of Perkasie, Pa., Mark and Joanne Lawrie of Westfield, N.J., and Matthew and Kathleen Lawrie of Ewing, N.J.; and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Elena Amitrano of Phoenix, Ariz.; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins; and her in-laws.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Lawrie, on Jan. 6, 1993. She was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.

Visitation will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Eannace Funeral Home Inc., 932 South St., Utica. Please omit floral offerings. For those wishing to do so, please consider donations to the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 507 Kent St., Utica, N.Y. 13501, or to the American Heart Association of Central New York, 120 Lomond Ct., Utica, N.Y. 13502; envelopes for this purpose will also be available at the funeral home.

Mrs. Lawrie's funeral will commence on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. from the funeral home and at 11 a.m. at St. Francis De Sales Church, 1119 Elm St., Utica, where her Mass of resurrection will be celebrated. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Utica, at the convenience of the family.

William Wallace

FRASER — William Wallace, age 75, died at home after a short illness Sunday, March 18, 2001.

He was born Dec. 19, 1925, in Ridgewood, Queens, the son of James Henry and Katherine (Keane) Wallace.

Bill enlisted in the Army Air Corps in February of 1943 and was called to active duty in April 1944. He served in the Army until his discharge in May of 1946.

A 1943 graduate of St. John's Prep and a 1948 graduate of St. John's University, he continued his education at Fordham Law School before completing his graduate studies at New York University, receiving an MA in literature. He taught at Loyola High School in New York City for two years.

In 1953, Bill and his first wife, Joan, spent two years in Europe, first in Spain, then Italy. He spent his time writing, hoping to produce the Great American Novel. His daughter Diana was born in Spain and his son James was born in Italy. Returning home, the family spent several years in the Syracuse area before moving to Fraser in 1964.

Bill was a professor of literature and philosophy at the State University College of Technology at Delhi until his retirement, in 1991. His retirement was spent indulging in his passion for writing and extensive traveling overseas.

Surviving are his wife of 22 years, Ann (Thompson) Wallace; a son, James Henry and his wife, Nicole (Andridge) Wallace, of Coppell,  Texas, who are expecting their first child, a girl, in April; a son, Andrew E. Wallace of Vail,  Colo.; a daughter, Kelly Bridget, her husband, Mark Newton, and 8-month-old son, Luka, of Round Lake; his sister, Winifred Bauer of Albertson, Long Island; a nephew, Arthur Ladd and his wife, Dorothy, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and cousins, the Yungfleisches of Albion. Also surviving are his stepchildren, Heidi and Pat Kester, and their three girls, Jenna, Julia and Rebecca of West Walworth; and Mandi and Doug Mader and their two children, Garrett and Melissa, of Garrett Park, Md.

He was predeceased by his daughter Diana Wallace in 1986.

Friends are invited to call at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, March 21, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, March 22, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Thomas O'Connell, a deacon at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Delhi, officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in Bill's memory may be sent to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
