Ann M. Sugarick

WESTVILLE — Mrs. Ann M. Sugarick, 85, died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 3, 2001, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on March 28, 1915, in Casselman, Pa., daughter of Frank C. and Sophie (Yuran) Gorence.

She married Andrew S. Sugarick on Jan. 17, 1931, in Holsopple, Pa. Mr. Sugarick died on Jan. 6, 1993.

Ann was raised and educated in  Pennsylvania and moved to Cooperstown in 1941.

For many years she was employed by Stephen C. Clark Jr.

A devoted wife and mother, Ann spent her life nurturing her family. She loved children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ann was a superb cook who also enjoyed sewing, reading and embroidery.

She was a member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown and for many years was a member of the Bassett Hospital Auxiliary.

Ann is survived by three daughters, Delores Willsey and her husband, David, of Cooperstown, Caroline Carnicelli and her husband, Paul, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Patricia Ryan of Cooperstown; one son, Ret. Major Andrew P. Sugarick and his wife, Nancy, of Fayetteville, N.C.; 13 grandchildren, David A. Willsey, Michael R. Willsey and his wife, Tammy, Elizabeth A. Timm and her husband, Edward, Lia A. Dahler and her husband, James, Ann M. Pearsall and her husband, Steven, Kevin J. Ryan, Sarah Wilcox and her husband, Jeff, John F. Ryan, Christopher A. Ryan and his wife, Carol, Patricia A. Penree and her husband, John, Karen Brown and her husband, Phillip, Susan Bricker and her husband, Scott, and Melinda Sugarick; 23 great-grandchildren; six sisters, Mrs. Sophie Gus, Mrs. Agnes Van Dyke, Mrs. Gladys Davidson and Mrs Caroline Schemm, all of Cooperstown, Mrs. Louise Kubis of Schenevus and Mrs. Jenny Calhoun of Nampa, Idaho; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Mrs. Alice Ann Gurley and Mrs. Mary G. Roberts; two brothers, Charles and Frank Gorence; and two grandchildren, Nancy M. Sugarick and Paul A. Carnicelli.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John Rosson, pastor, officiating.

Burial will take place at a later date at St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

Immediately following the funeral Mass, all attending are invited to join Ann's family for a time of food and fellowship at St. Mary's Parish Center.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Tuesday evening, Feb. 6, from 7 to 9., when Ann's family will be in attendance. A prayer service will be held at 8:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Randy VanValkenburgh

HOBART — Randy VanValkenburgh went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Feb. 2, 2001.

Randy, a lifelong resident of Delaware County, was born on Aug. 26, 1944 in Stamford.

Raised in Roxbury, he loved sharing the stories of an ideal childhood spent in a small town.

In 1962, he graduated from the Roxbury Central School and was accepted as an apprentice at Bendix Corp. in Sidney. Completing his apprenticeship, he became a tool and die maker. Upon leaving Bendix for a position at the Power Authority in Blenheim/Gilboa, he became a supervisor in the Mechanical Maintenance Department. He retired in 1994.

Randy is survived by his wife, Florence A. VanValkenburgh; sons, David VanValkenburgh and wife, Melanie Woch VanValkenburgh, of Ocala, Fla., and Daniel VanValkenburgh and wife, Kim  Johnson VanValkenburgh, of Grand Gorge; granddaughter, Candi P. VanValkenburgh; his beloved sister, Judy DeNeve of Belliview, Fla.; his father, Harold VanValkenburgh of Ocala, Fla. His mother, Betty Macafee, predeceased him. He is also survived by his wife's children, who dearly loved him: Chris and Margaret Trayhan, daughter Courtney, of St. Johnsville, David and Joanna Trayhan, daughter Hannah, of Pattersonville, and Jim and Kimberly Russell, daughter Meghan, of Ballston Spa. He also leaves behind aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Randy was an avid gun collector, a member of the NRA and the Green Mountain Antique Gun Collectors Club, in Brattleboro, Vt..

His many interests included building a street rod with the help of his friends, his machine shop and his precious dog Cocoa.

Randy loved life, living every day as a gift from God, but this sweet, gentle man, who fought the ravages of cancer courageously for many years, is now reborn and whole in Jesus.

Friends will be received at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, today from 7 to 9 p.m.

A Funeral Service to celebrate Randy's life will be held at the  Jefferson Methodist Church on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Charles Goeckel officiating.

There will be a social hour afterwards in the church recreation area.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Robert J. Mattice

STONY POINT — Robert J. Mattice, a longtime resident of Highland, Kingston and most recently Stony Point, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at University Hospital, Coral Springs, Fla..

He will be forever remembered for his integrity, patience and unconditional love for his family.

Mr. Mattice was a manager for the Singer Sewing Machine Co. and auditor for the Highland Central Schools.

He served in World War II as sergeant and flight engineer with the Air Transport Command for the United States Air Force in Africa. He was past post quartermaster Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6292 in Stamford.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Highland and St. James United Methodist Church in Kingston.

Born May 6, 1914, in Stamford, he was the son of Burton J. and Grace Kinch Mattice.

He married his wife of 55 years, Glenda Wickham Mattice, on Dec. 1, 1945.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Jennette McMorris of Tribeshill; his four children, Pamela J. Lafferty of Coral Springs, Fla., Robert J. Mattice of Durango,  Colo., Thomas J. Mattice of Highland and Bonnye J. Mollicone of Stony Point; and grandchildren Melissa, Megan, Karissa, Kylie, Karli, Scott, Jesse, Jonas and Jay.

He was predeceased by his sisters Charlotte Wickham of Stamford and Harriette  Taylor of Newburgh; and brothers, Douglas Mattice of Stamford, Orson Mattice of Stamford and Anthony Mattice of Ocean Grove, N.J..

The family will receive friends at the Sutton Funeral Home, One Woodside Place, Highland, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Village Square, Highland, on Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Arlene Dawber officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in Stamford.

Esther M. Birdsall

UNADILLA — Esther M. Birdsall, 71, of Covered Bridge Road, passed away Saturday evening, Feb. 3, 2001, at her residence.

She was born Feb. 13, 1929, in the town of Gilbertsville, the daughter of the late William and Edith Wilber Heath.

She was married to Earle C. Birdsall on Jan. 5, 1951, in Mount Upton. He predeceased her March 16, 1993.

For several years, Esther worked in food service at the Unadilla Elementary School and later at the Unatego Junior and Senior High School. She was a member of the Jolly Nine, Wells Bridge, and the Tri-Town Diabetes Support Group.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Connie Birdsall of Unadilla, Gerald and Roxanne Birdsall of Sidney and Randall and Nan Birdsall of Unadilla; three sisters, Mrs. Christina Camp of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Mrs. Beatrice Allen of Bainbridge and Mrs. Florence Coon of Norwich; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Wilber and Esther Heath of Sidney, Frederick and Marilyn Heath of Sidney, James Heath of Winslow, Ariz., and Daniel Heath of Oneonta; four grandchildren, Bryan, Robert, Sierra and Kalynn Birdsall; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Two brothers, George and Richard Heath, predeceased Esther.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the Wells Bridge Baptist Church, Wells Bridge, with the Rev. Robert Wesley and the Rev. David Steensma officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in the Sand Hill Cemetery, Wells Bridge.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with her family in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., 13820.

Barry F. Wood

OTEGO — Barry F. Wood (Woody), 35, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, as a result of a snowmobile accident.

Barry was born in Port Chester on March 11, 1965, the son of Frank C. and Betty Ann Wood.

Barry was educated in Rye and graduated from Rye High in 1983. He attended the State University College of Technology at Delhi in 1984.

He worked as a beverage salesman for McGrath Beverages in Utica.

Barry formerly lived in West Minster, Vt., from 1996 to 2000. He lived in Otego the past year.

Barry will be remembered for being a wonderful father to Matty, his love of music, outdoor activities, his great personality and his love for his family.

Barry is survived by his son, Matthew; his wife, Jennifer L.; his brother, Frank; his grandfather, Frank Wood, formerly of Rye; and several aunts, uncles nephew, Ryan, and others.

Family members who predeceased him include his maternal grandmother and grandfather, John and Mary Sullivan, of Mamaroneck; and paternal grandmother, Irene Wood, of Rye.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Matthews Church in Laurens.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Feb. 7, and Thursday, Feb. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m., and to 9 p.m., at Graham's Funeral Home, Boston Post Road, Rye.

The funeral will be held at Resurrection Church, Boston Post Road, Rye, on Friday, Feb. 9, at 10 a.m.

Interment will follow at Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye.

Friends may send donations to a memorial fund that will be established for Matthew Wood, in care of Jennifer Wood, 54 Pine St., Bellows Falls, Vt.

Margaret Fox

MARGARETVILLE — Margaret Anne T. Fox, 80, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 at Florence Hospital, Florence, S.C., from a lengthy illness.

Margaret was born in Caldwell, N.J., on Aug. 21, 1920, the daughter of Milton Amos and Laura Anna (Edsel) Thomson.

Margaret was a resident of Roxbury for several years.

She was a graduate of the University of Delaware and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society. She was a member of the A.A.U.W., a charter member of the Skating Club of Wilmington, Del., and a member of the Church of the Covenant in Wilmington, Del.

She is survived by three daughters, Laura Fox Ingram of Bartlett, Tenn., Elizabeth (Betsy) Olsen of Florence, S.C., and Carole Anne Fox of Manhatten Beach,  Calif.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Margaret's husband, William Edward Fox, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held at the United Presbyterian Church, Margaretville, on Thursday, Feb. 8, with Diane Wickham officiating. Burial will be held in the spring at Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Memorials may be made to the Florence Museum, 558 Spruce St., Florence, S.C., 29501 or to Public Education Television.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Jacob Teunisen

STAMFORD — Jacob Teunisen, 87, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at the Robinson Terrace.

Jacob was born in Little Ferry, N.J., on Feb. 3, 1913, the son of Frank and Amelia.

He was an area resident for 23 years relocating from Haskell, N.J. A retired brakeman on the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad, he enjoyed gardening, violin playing and spending time with his nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Jacob is survived by his wife of 62 years, Stephanie; two daughters, Patricia Wyble, and her husband, Charles, of  Jefferson, and Stephanie Rathbon, and her husband, Anthony, of Maywood, N.J.; and a son, Walter Teunisen, and his wife, Bonnie, of Union, N.J.

Friends may call at the William A. Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main St. (corner of Liberty), 2 to 7 p.m. today.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at the Sacred Heart R.C.C. in Stamford. Jacob will be interred in the Sacred Heart cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Thomas Butcher

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Thomas "Joe" Butcher, formerly of Guilford and Sidney, passed away at his home on Feb. 1, 2001.

Memorial services will be held Feb. 10, 2001, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Bainbridge, at 2 p.m.

The Rev. Linda King Watkins, vicar, will officiate.

Ward P. Armstrong

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Ward Perry Armstrong, 91, of Chyle Road, died on Wednesday morning, Jan. 17, 2001, in Folts Homes, Herkimer.

On Jan. 19, 1909, he was born on the family farm, in the town of Warren, son of the late Perry and Alice Burke Armstrong.

A lifelong Richfield Springs resident, he graduated from Richfield Springs High School.

On Feb. 5, 1944, he married Louise McRorie in the Epworth Methodist Church, Matamoras, Pa.

His lifework was dairy farming. He took great pride in farming and was the fifth generation to own and operate the family farm, until his retirement in 1985.

Ward was a member of the Federated Church in Jordanville, a member of the Richfield Springs Grange, where he served on a local committee at state and national levels, and a member and leader of the 4-H Club in Richfield Springs.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Louise; two sons and their wives, Glenn and Marcia Armstrong of Jordanville and William and Barbara Armstrong of Newfield; one sister, Edna Snyder of Santa Monica,  Calif.; three granddaughters, Diane Lauzun of Lansing, Megan Clark of Norwalk, Conn., and Karen Armstrong of Ithaca; and a stepgrandson, James Lauzun of Lansing.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 3 p.m. in Folts Homes Wakeman Chapel.

The Rev. David Ortel, Folts Home Chaplain, and the Rev. James Barnes II, pastor of the Jordanville Federated Church, will officiate.

The family will be present in the chapel to receive relatives and friends from 1 to 3 p.m. before the service.

Memorial donations may be made to Folts Homes. Envelopes will be available. Arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs.

Margaret A.T. Fox

MARGARETVILLE — Funeral services for Margaret Anne T. Fox, 80, who died Saturday, Feb. 3, in Florence, S.C., will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Presbyterian Church in Margaretville, with Diane Wickham officiating.

Burial will be in the spring at Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Lottie M. Chapin

WEST ONEONTA — Mrs. Lottie M. Chapin, 90, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born May 19, 1910, in Hamden, the daughter of Mitchell J. and Margaret A. (Banks) Hitt.

She married Glenn William Chapin on Jan. 11, 1932, in Homestead, Pa. He died June 5, 1993.

Lottie lived most of her life in West Oneonta and had worked in the kitchen of the food service department at Homer Folks Hospital for 17 years, until the hospital closed. Before that she had worked at the Mica Plant here in Oneonta for a short time.

Lottie was a member of the West Oneonta Baptist Church, a member of the Golden Agers Club at the YMCA and had also been an avid Bingo player. When she was younger she enjoyed fishing.

Lottie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Richard Fink of West Oneonta; a sister, Mrs. Vivian Colteryahn of Wooster, Ohio; two half brothers, Lester and Raymond Stewart, both of Bovina Center; two grandchildren, Jackie Smith of Wells Bridge and Richard Fink of West Oneonta; and three great-grandchildren, Thomas Ballard and Kaitlin and William Smith. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by a daughter, Glenndora Chapin, who died April 18, 1951; her mother, Margaret Stewart; and several brothers, two sisters and a half sister.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The Rev. Willard Miller of Oneonta will officiate.

Friends may call one hour before the service, from 1 to 2 p.m. today. Burial will be in the spring in Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be given to the Alzheimers Association, Northeastern N.Y. Chapter, Leatherstocking Branch, P.O. Box 1364, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, in memory of Lottie M. Chapin.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.
