Fred D'Amato
HERKIMER — Mr. Fred D'Amato, age 98, of Herkimer, peacefully joined his Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven on Wednesday morning, October 8, 2003, in Folts Homes, Herkimer.
He was born on February 22, 1905, in Compabasso, Italy, a son of the late Giovanni and Amilia (Martinez) D'Amato and received his education in schools in the United States of America. He resided at one time in Philadelphia and Dolgeville but has resided in Herkimer for over 20 years.
On November 16, 1929, Fred was united in marriage to Clemantina "Lena" Pizzuto in Norristown. They were truly dedicated to the well being of one another. She passed away on January 17, 1997. He was last employed as a foreman with an exclusive shoe factory in Philadelphia. He was a member of Mt. Zion Ministries, Utica, and his faith was very important to him.
An admirable and extraordinary man, Fred was blessed with a warm and friendly attitude, a good and open heart and a genuine and gracious manner. Because of his special loving ways, people gravitated to him for support and friendship. The way he lived provided an inspiring example for his family to emulate. Fred was a hardworker with loyal dedication that reflected the compassion and goodness in his own heart.
In his spare time he enjoyed gardening.
He leaves three beloved daughters, Amelia Rossiter and husband William of California, Renee Crumbaker and husband James of Florida and Jo Anne Servello and husband Joseph of Herkimer; a brother, Rocco D'Amato and wife Phyllis of Boston; a sister, Anita in Italy; and his grandchildren, Judy Bach and husband Richard and Tony Servello and wife DeeDee. He was very proud of his grandsons, Pastor Michael Servello Sr., Pastor Michael Servello Jr. and Joseph Servello for the religious lives that they chose. Also surviving are Fred's grandson's wives, Melissa, Kelly and Barbara Servello. Survivors also include three great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one brother and one sister.
Visitation at the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer, will be on Friday, October 10, from 5-7 p.m. Fred's funeral will commence at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, October 11, from the chapel of the funeral home with his grandsons, Pastor Michael Servello Jr. and Joseph Servello, officiating. Procession will follow to Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer, where Mr. D'Amato will be laid to rest alongside his wife Lena. Kindly consider expressions of sympathy to Mt. Elsa Reith O'Brien
LITTLE FALLS — Elsa Reith O'Brien, 86, of 634 E. Gansevoort St., Little Falls, and more recently of the Residential Healthcare Facility at Little Falls Hospital, passed away Monday, October 6, 2003, at that residence. She was born on September 15, 1917, in Rome, the daughter of the late Werner and Elsa (Engel) Reith. She was a graduate of Madison High School, class of 1934, and the University of Rochester, class of 1938. She was united in marriage to Richard J. O'Brien on May 15, 1946, at the United Methodist Church Parsonage, Little Falls. Mr. O'Brien predeceased her on October 12, 1981. She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Smith of Greensboro, North Carolina; five grandchildren; several great grandchildren and her dear friend and companion, Edward J. Schaefer of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family from the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann St., Little Falls. Interment will take place in Dolgeville Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
Albert J. Vogt
DOLGEVILLE — Mr. Albert J. Vogt Sr., 65, of 1193 Barker Rd., Dolgeville, died Monday, October 6, 2003, in Little Falls Hospital.
He was born in Carmel on July 26, 1938, the son of Robert and Frances (Hyatt) Vogt and attended local school. His marriage to the former Donna Yeomans took place on February 14, 1983, in New Milford, Conn. Albert was a farmer, operating the farm on Barker Road, until he retired due to his failing health. He was of the Catholic faith, and he personally enjoyed fishing, hunting and his family and friends.
Surviving him is his wife, Donna; his sons and their wives, Kenneth and Katherine Swart of Little Falls, Daniel Swart of Conn. and Albert J. Vogt Jr., Christopher Vogt, Robert Vogt and Dennis Vogt, all of Dolgeville; his daughter, Donna Vogt of Dolgeville; Robert Jackson who was like a father to him; and several grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 11, at 11 a.m. at the Roberts-Buck Funeral Home, 3 Faville Ave., Dolgeville. Friends and family may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
Charlotte Carter
ST. JOHNSVILLE — Charlotte Carter, 68, of 5 Ann St., St. Johnsville, passed away on Tuesday October 7, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam.
She was born April 2, 1935, in St. Johnsville, the daughter of the late Frederick and Pearl (Lieber) Carter. Charlotte was a graduate of St. Johnsville High School, class of 1953, and was a lifelong resident of the St. Johnsville area. She was last employed at Ideal Wood Products in Little Falls and at one time she worked at the former Little Falls Felt Shoe Co. Miss Carter was of the Protestant faith and was an avid bowler, bowling in St. Johnsville, Canajoharie and Fort Plain leagues. She was also a former member of the St. Johnsville Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include her sister, Marian (Dolly) Smith of St. Johnsville; many nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and great-nephews; several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; several cousins, an aunt; Mildred House of Rochester, and her feline companion, Coco.
She was pre-deceased by two brothers, William and Richard Carter; and a nephew, Brian Smith.
Friends and relatives may call at the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, on Thursday, October 9, 2003, from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services and interment will be at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to a charity of one's choice.
Charles W. Ortlieb
DOLGEVILLE — Mr. Charles W. Ortlieb, 61, a retired assistant superintendent for the village of Dolgeville, and Herkimer County Deputy Fire Coordinator, died unexpectedly Saturday, October 4, 2003, while attending the Dolgeville-Little Falls football game.
Chuck was born on July 26, 1942, in Rochester, the son of Carl and Emily ( Schmidt) Ortlieb and was educated in Dolgeville schools. His marriage to the former Marie Lussier took place on August 3, 1963, in St. Joseph's Church, Dolgeville. Chuck was employed by the Village of Dolgeville DPW from 1974 until he retired in September 2002. Prior he was employed by the General Electric Company, French Road Division.
Chuck was an active, outspoken member of the fire service, both as a participant and a contributor for over 42 years. He joined the Dolgeville Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter in February 1961. In 1968, he became foreman. He served as chief in 1975 and 1976. He was vice president of the department from 1969 to 1974, and again in 1988 and 1989. From 1976 to 1980 he served as president. He returned to that office from 1982 until 1986 and again in 1990. In 1990, he became its safety officer, an office held until present. He was appointed as the emergency management coordinator for the village of Dolgeville in 1998 and retained that position until today.
Chuck was instrumental in the planning and building of the Dolgeville firehouse. He was a founding father of the Dolgeville Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps (DAVAC). In 1983, he was appointed as a Herkimer County Deputy Fire Coordinator and remained as such until his passing. In 1985, he was appointed by the Herkimer County Legislature as a member and investigator for the Herkimer County Arson Task Force. Chuck was an advocate for 911. He had been a member of the 911 Advisory Board and of the oversight committee since 1998.
The last 11 years found him as not only a member but also as the secretary of the Herkimer County Fire Advisory Board. He was a member of the Herkimer County Comprehensive Emergency Planning Committee. Chuck has been a member of the Herkimer County Volunteer Firemen's Association for decades. He had been the president and served as the treasurer for many years. He served as chairman of the sports committee and the legislative committee. Chuck had been a member of the Herkimer County Chiefs Association since 1973 and had served as their secretary and treasurer.
Chuck was also an active director from Herkimer County to the Central New York Firemen's Association. He was the current chairman of the ways and means and parade rules committees. Chuck was an active member of the Firemen's Association of the State of New York. He was also an area representative for the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs.
Chuck was also active with the American Red Cross. He served as co-chairman of the Disaster Team and was the chairman of the Damage Assessment Team of the Mohawk Valley since 1998. Also he was an avid Dolgeville football fan, never missing a game whether local or at the Dome.
He is survived by his wife, Marie; a daughter, Miss Michele Ortlieb; a son and his wife, Michael and Estella Ortlieb, all of Dolgeville; a sister and her husband, Jane (Short) and Jack Savage of Arkansas; very special friends, Wilson and Muriel Dodge, Dave and Irene Spencer and Heidi and Paul Mouyos; his several nieces and nephews; and his canine friend, Mona. He was predeceased by a sister, Elma Lyon.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 8, at 11 a.m. at the Dolgeville Firehouse on Helmer Avenue, with the Rev. Archie Clark and Mr. Dave Spencer officiating. Procession to the Dolgeville Cemetery, escorted by area fire departments and county officials, will follow the services.
Calling hours are Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. At 7 p.m. the local, county and state fireman's associations will offer their services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Dolgeville Fire department in his memory. Arrangements are entrusted to the Roberts-Buck Funeral Home, 3 Faville Ave. Dolgeville.
Dorothy A. 'Dottie' Richie
EAST HERKIMER — Dorothy A. (Dottie) Richie, 77, of 116 Arthur St., East Herkimer, passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica.
She was born February 25, 1926, in Little Falls, the daughter of the late Harry T. and Mildred (Dockerty) Kinney. Dorothy was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy, class of 1943, and also attended St. Rose Nursing School in Amsterdam. Dottie lived all of her life in the Little Falls and Herkimer area. Her marriage to Raphael (Ralph) Richie Sr., took place on November 18, 1944, at St. Mary's Church in Little Falls.
Mrs. Richie was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church in Herkimer and was a member of the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post No. 25 Ladies Auxiliary, where she held at one time the positions of chaplain and junior auxiliary leader. Dottie was also involved with the former East Herkimer Cub Scouts, Pack 22, where at one time she was a den mother, cub master and committee person.
Dorothy centered her life around her family, she proved herself to be a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. Along with her family, Dorothy took much pride and had a special talent for decorating cakes for any occasion.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Raphael (Ralph); two sons, Ralph Richie Jr. and wife Evelyn (Sue) of East Herkimer and Michael D. Richie and wife Carol of Oak Harbor, Washington; two daughters, JoAnne Bouck and husband Richard of Ilion and Cheri-Lynn Richie of Oneonta; four grandsons, Richard Bouck Jr. of Ilion, Christopher Richie of Gaithersburg, Maryland, Keith Richie of Rochester and James Richie of Oak Harbor, Washington; a great grandson, Zachary Bouck; a step-great grandson, Blake Voorhees; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Kinney and John Joseph Kinney; and two sisters, Betty Willman and Mary George.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2003, at 9:15 a.m. from the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer, and at 10 a.m. from St. Francis de Sales Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Reverend Mark Cunningham, pastor. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, October 7, 2003, from 5-8 p.m. Members of the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post No. 25 Ladies Auxiliary are asked to meet at the funeral home Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. for services. Eleanor White
ONEONTA — Eleanor Holbrook White, 79, passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home after a long illness.
Eleanor was born Dec. 12, 1921, in the town of Laurens, the daughter of Lucious B. Holbrook and Nina A. (Sisson) Holbrook.
She grew up on the East Branch of the Otsdawa and was valedictorian of the Class of 1939 at Otego Central School.
She married Glenn A. White Nov. 1939, in New Berlin, and they lived for many years in the town and city of Oneonta, where they operated a trucking business and later a soft-ice-cream truck. She also was employed at Jamesway Department Store for several years.
Eleanor moved to Laurens in 1986 and was a member of the Laurens American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary.
She was a caring and giving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and took great delight in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Alison White of Laurens and Barry and Lori White of Manlius; a daughter and son-in-law, Richard and Joan ( White) Kollgaard of West Oneonta; eight grandchildren; a stepgrandson; and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Janet Prentice of Greene; a brother-in-law, Robert Storm of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband, who died in 1976, she was predeceased by a grandson, Scott White, in 1965; a son, David L. White, in 1966; a brother, Mason Holbrook, in 1976; and a sister, Virginia Storm, in 1997.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dougherty, pastor of the West Oneonta Baptist Church, officiating.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday Feb. 2, 2001, when the family will be in attendance at the funeral home.

John H. Allen
COBLESKILL — John H. Allen, 56, of Grovenors Corners Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill.
Mr. Allen was born March 23, 1944, in Oneonta, the son of the late Edmond Allen and his mother, Lucy (Crandell) Allen, who survives him.
Mr. Allen lived in this area most of his life, and was a 1962 graduate of the Cobleskill Central School.
For more than 25 years, he was employed with Howard Johnson's Restaurants as kitchen manager and head chef at numerous franchises.
For the past nine years, Mr. Allen had worked at Guilford Mills in Cobleskill as a laborer until the onset of his illness in July 2000.
Survivors include his mother, Lucy (Crandell) Allen of Cobleskill; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Rosemarie and Peter Babcock of Cobleskill and Mary Ann and Robert Storm of Harpursville; a niece and husband, Lynn and Steven Green of Sloansville; and two great-nieces, Stacey and Kelly Green, both of Sloansville.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours.
Burial will be at a later date in Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cobleskill Volunteer Rescue Squad, Main Street, Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043.

Maria B. Marr
FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Maria B. Marr, 74, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Claiborne-Hughes Nursing Home in Franklin, Tenn., after a long battle with emphysema.
Born Aug. 5, 1926, in Cooperstown, she was the daughter of the late Captain Boris Wolkonsky and Catherine A. Wolkonsky, former teachers at the Knox School for Girls. Both her parents were refugees from the Russian Revolution and Civil War.
Mrs. Marr was a homemaker from the early 1960s through the 1980s.
Previously, she worked as a baby nurse at the New York Foundling Hospital and Church World Service in New York City.
She attended the Knox School and graduated from Williams Institute in the 1940s.
Survivors include a son, Paul F. Marr of Albany; a daughter, Susan E. Garrabrant of Thompson's Station, Tenn.; a brother, John Pentacost of Poolesville, Md.; two grandchildren, Alexandra and Thomas Garrabrant of Thompson's Station, Tenn.; one niece; and one nephew.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frederic H. Marr, in 1983; her mother, in 1992; and her father, in 1990.
There are no calling hours.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the St. Sergius Russian Orthodox Church, Valley Cottage, N.Y.
Burial will be in the cemetery of the Novo-Diveyevo Russian Orthodox Convent in Spring Valley, N.Y.

Bernard Holbrook
COOPERSTOWN — Bernard James Holbrook, 94, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.
He was born on Sept. 16, 1906, in Hartwick, the son of Ziba and Alta Holbrook.
He attended Cooperstown Central School and graduated from Syracuse University in 1928 with a BS in business administration. During the depression he was a salesman for the Nettleson Shoe Company.
He served his country as a lieutenant in the Navy and was stationed in Sitka, Alaska, during World War II.
As a boy, Bernard delivered blocks of ice in a horse-drawn wagon to summer residents around Otsego Lake.
He was an avid bird hunter and competed in field trials with his Labrador retrievers.
For many years he sailed in regional regattas with his star sailboat named North Star.
Bernard was predeceased by his sister, Wanda Kerr.
He is survived by three children, Jill of Portland, Ore., Barton of Seattle, Wash., and Jim of Cooperstown; and by a stepdaughter, Sarah James of Cambridge, Mass.
Friends may visit at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, commencing at 5 p.m., and funeral services will follow at 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford, N.Y., or the Susquehanna SPCA, Hyde Park, N.Y.

Robert T. Nowak
EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mr. Robert T. Nowak, 49, formerly of Wethersfield, Conn., passed away unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
He had been in the process of fulfilling his lifelong dream of establishing and operating a farm. He had been dairy farming in East Springfield, with his wife, Linda, for only the past year and a half.
He made many new friends in this community and leaves many friends and family members brokenhearted and grieving.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ron Fralick, pastor, officiating.
