Cecil W. Fitzgerald
SIDNEY — Cecil "Cy" W. Fitzgerald, 81, of Sidney, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at The Hospital, Sidney.
He was born the son of the late Earnest and Mattie Osborne Fitzgerald on May 10, 1919, in Sidney.
Mr. Fitzgerald graduated from Sidney High School in the Class of 1938.
He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.
Mr. Fitzgerald married Eunice Adams on Jan. 19, 1940, in Walton.
He was employed as a draftsman for E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney, when he retired.
Mr. Fitzgerald was a member of the Sidney Golf and Country Club, the Lodge of the Elks #2175, Sidney, the Sidney Masonic Lodge #801 F.&A.M., the Charles L. Jacobi American Legion Post #183, Sidney, and the United Methodist Church, Sidney.
He is survived by his wife, Eunice Fitzgerald of Sidney; two sons and daughter-in-law, Gordon Fitzgerald of Snyder and James and Maureen Fitzgerald of Sidney Center; two daughters and son-in-law, Karen J. Blackford of Buffalo and Dale and Paul Greene of Jacksonville, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by two brothers, Kenneth and Donald Fitzgerald.
There are no calling hours or services.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, Sidney.

Evelyn Slawson
ONEONTA — Evelyn Slawson, 94, of Oneonta, passed away on Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home.
She was born in Oneonta on Oct. 23, 1906, the daughter of Walter and Emily Gay Caine. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Forrest Slawson, in 1970, and a sister, Mildred Caine, in 1997.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Virginia (Dorwin) Cook of Muskegon, Mich.; grandchildren, Janice (David) Clark of Spring Lake, Mich., and David (Sheryl) Northrup of St. Joseph, Mich.; great-grandchildren, Dr. Jeffrey (Samantha) Anhalt, Joel Anhalt, Jonathan (Erin) Anhalt, Jared (Sue) Northrup, Joshua Northrup and Maxwell Northrup; and a great-great-grandchild, Alexander Anhalt.
Evelyn was a lifetime resident of the area.
She was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church and taught for the Albany School District for many years.
Graveside services will be in the spring at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
There will be no calling hours.

Frank A. Davis
HOBART — Frank A. Davis, 77, of Hobart, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in Hobart.
He was born Sept. 21, 1923, in Orange, Mass., the son of Charles and Grace (Sexton) Davis.
He never married.
Mr. Davis was a World War II veteran.
He had resided in this area since 1965, working as a laminator at the Una-Lam Division of Unadilla Silo Co. in Sidney and then moved to Hobart, where he resided at the Hearthstone.
He was a member of the Good Shepherd Chapel, Rose's Brook.
Survivors include a brother, Clarence Davis of Brunswick, Maine; three sisters, Roberta Robbins of Massachusetts, Hazel Rickerd of Michigan and Ida Davis of Orange, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will take place on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with Lay Pastor David Holscher of the Good Shepherd Chapel officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Burial will be in the spring at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Hobart Emergency Squad or to the Good Shepherd Chapel, Rose's Brook.

Ford B. Risley
HORNELL — Ford B. Risley, 94, passed away Sunday morning, Jan. 7, 2001, at McAuley Manor in North Hornell, where he has been a patient for the past six years.
Born in the town of Hart-wick on July 7, 1906, he was the son of the late William and Ethel Balcom Risley.
A resident of Hartwick for most of his life, Ford came to Hornell in 1994.
He was a graduate of Hartwick High School and was one of the two youngest students to graduate from the Albany Business College.
He assisted his parents in the operation of the family-owned grocery store in Hartwick. A former employee of the Delaware & Hudson Railroad, he also owned and operated his own insurance agency in Hartwick for many years. He sold his business to the Hughson Insurance Co. and was employed with them before his retirement.
Ford was a veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Army.
A longtime and active member of the Hartwick Methodist Church, he was also a trustee for the Hartwick Cemetery Association as well as a trustee for the former National Commercial Bank (now Key Bank) in Cooperstown. He was also a member of the Hartwick American Legion Post.
Ford was an avid musician and played the trumpet for a band named "Susquehannans" during the Big Band Era.
On Jan. 1, 1936, he married the love and joy of his life, the former Anna Kniskern, who predeceased him in 1994.
His family includes his son, William Darrell (Heidi) Risley of Yakima, Wash.; his daughter, Gail (Kenneth) Weir of Hornell; his six grandchildren, Jennifer (Todd) Howard of Cooperstown, Christopher Risley of Peoria, Ill., Rene Weir of Lakeview, Megan Weir of Breda, Netherlands and Amanda and Travis Weir, both of Hornell.
There will be no calling hours.
A graveside service will be held at the convenience of his family at the Hartwick Cemetery in Hartwick.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in Ford's memory to either the Hartwick Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 208, Hartwick, N.Y., or to the Hartwick Methodist Church, Hartwick, N.Y. 13348.

Katherine O. Horth
ONEONTA — Katherine O. Horth, 54, of Oneonta, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on Dec. 20, 1946, in Bloomville, the daughter of Herbert W. and Anna E. Moore Faulkner McAdams.
She was predeceased by her father and a brother, Bill McAdams.
She is survived by her husband, Vaughn P. Horth of Oneonta; her children, Brenda Andreassen and her companion, Casey Reed, of West Oneonta, Misty Holling and her fiance, Keith Leggett, of Oneonta, Robin McLean of W. Chazy, Gary Horth and his fiancee, Debbie Ogborn, of Sarasota, Fla., and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Horth of Otego; 12 grandchildren; her mother, Anna McAdams; sisters, Annie Souls, Sharon Becker, Patty Kelly and Bonnie Hamm; brother, Mike McAdams; a dear friend, Stephanie Thorn; and several nieces and nephews.
Katherine was a lifelong resident of Oneonta.
She married Vaughn Horth on June 27, 1964, and was married for 37 years, and was employed as a residential aide at ARC for more than 10 years and received an award for her length of employment.
She is remembered as a wonderful mother who loved spending time with her grandchildren and drinking coffee with her sister, Bonnie, and best friend, Stephanie Thorn. She also enjoyed her trips to Florida, where she vacationed every year.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 10, 2001, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith Thistle, chaplain of the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating. Spring interment will be in Maryland Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 1 to 3 p.m., before services at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, in Katherine's memory.
Ethel G. Smith
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Ethel G. ("Smitty") Smith, 89, formerly of Leatherstocking Street, Cooperstown, died Monday evening, Jan. 8, 2001, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
She was born on Oct. 12, 1911, in Long Island City, a daughter of Franklin Goddard and Leonore (Neilsen) Goddard Eldred.
She married F. Edward Smith on May 27, 1935, in Madison. Mr. Smith died on Feb. 26, 1990.
Smitty, as she was affectionately known by her family and friends, came with her family to the Cooperstown area in 1917.
A graduate of Cooperstown High School, Class of 1930, she trained as a nurse at the Syracuse Memorial Hospital Nursing School, graduating in 1933. In the late 1930s, she began what would be a long career as a registered nurse at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. She advanced to the position of Head Nurse on Center Two and retired in 1974.
A member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown, she was active with their Woman's Guild. She was also a member of the Double "X" Club in Cooperstown.
Smitty is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, F. Russell and Betty Smith of Cooperstown and Richard D. and Jean Smith of Castleton; six grandchildren, Russell E. Smith of Toddsville, Roger A. Smith and his wife, Dorothy (Slover) Smith, of Warnerville, Barbara J. Smith and Ken Parker of Toddsville, Richard S. Smith and his wife, Jennifer (Bowen) Smith, of Rotterdam; a granddaughter-in-law, Johna Blanchard Smith of Cooperstown, and granddaughters, Laura E. Smith of Greeley, Colo., and Kathryn S. Smith of Breckenridge, Colo.; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Leonore G. Robinson of Cooperstown; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Ramona G. Goddard of Cooperstown; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Janet Kerr of Cooperstown.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Arthur Goddard, who died in 2000, Franklin Goddard, who died in 1957, and Sidney Goddard, who died in 1955.
Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 11, 2001, from 3 to 5 p.m. when Smitty's family will be in attendance.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening, Jan. 11, 2001, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Stephen J. Quinlan, co-pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown, and the Rev. William Arthur Highfield, United Methodist Pastor, co-officiating. Burial will take place in the spring of 2001, at the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Freeland K. White
NORWICH — Freeland K. White, 89, longtime Norwich resident, passed away early Wednesday morning, Jan. 10, 2001, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital of Norwich.
Born and raised in Norwich, Freeland lived with his family on the family farm on Wells Road and also attended the Norwich schools.
On July 28, 1934, in Norwich, he married Doris White. Following their marriage, Freeland and Doris lived for a brief time in Norwich before moving to South New Berlin, where they made their home for more than 30 years before moving back to the Norwich area.
In his early years, Freeland was employed by the Chenango County Highway Department; he subsequently worked for the former Scintilla, now known as Amphenol, during the war years, continuing there for more
than 40 years and retiring at the age of 62.
A man who was devoted to his family — and they to him — Freeland enjoyed spending time with them. Always wanting to take a ride in the car, he would load his family in the car and just take off, driving with no particular destination in mind, because he just liked to drive. In keeping with his love of driving, he and his wife enjoyed traveling following his retirement. He was a collector of clocks over the years, having acquired many clocks of various types from his own family and from other sources.
Born Dec. 4, 1911, Freeland was the son of Earl E. and Lina (Keith) White.
Besides his wife of 66 years, Doris, Freeland is survived by his children and their spouses, Alfred Paul White of Virginia Beach, Va., Edwin Robert and Barbara White of Medina, Patricia Ann and Roy Rich of Filmore and Judy and Casey Jones of Norwich; by his sister, Grace Warner of Raleigh, N.C.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Freeland was predeceased by infant twin sons, Lewis and Charles White; one sister, Alma Laraway; and one brother, Charles White.
Funeral services for Freeland will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Kenneth Simpson, longtime family friend and retired Baptist clergyman, will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery of South New Berlin. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home today from 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Friday from noon until the time of the service, at 1 p.m.

Emma Love Zigon
FLY CREEK — Mrs. Emma Love Zigon, 86, of Fly Creek, died early Wednesday morning, Jan. 10, 2001, at her daughter's home in Fly Creek.
She was born on May 2, 1914, in McDonalton, Pa., a daughter of John and Margaret Meta (Bevcic) Udovich.
She married Joseph Anthony Zigon on Sept. 3, 1932, in Schuyler Lake. Mr. Zigon died on Oct. 20, 1994.
Emma and her husband, Joe, owned and operated the Oaksville Hotel from 1938 until 1946. From 1948 until 1955, they were proprietors of The Pine Lake Lodge in the Adirondacks.
She was a member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown.
A beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Emma is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Aufmuth of Fly Creek and Mrs. Barbara Sophie Holt and her husband, John, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Mrs. Jacquelin Aufmuth Ayorinde of Honeoye, Nicholas S. Aufmuth of Fly Creek, William Eric Aufmuth of Eggleston Hill, Milford, Kathy Lynn Fistrowicz of Burlington, John Joseph Holt of Tampa, Fla., Michael Holt of Pine Bush, Laura Holt of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Mark V. Holt of New York City; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Anna Udovich of Worcester; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Joseph, and one grandson, Joseph Holt.
Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, in Cooperstown, on Friday afternoon, Jan. 12, 2001, from 1 to 3 p.m., when Emma's family will be in attendance.

Paul W. Aikins
LEONARDSVILLE — Paul W. Aikins, 84, of Leonardsville, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, outside his home in the town of Plainfield.
He was born May 23, 1916, in New Berlin, the son of William B. and Alice (Henderson) Aikins.
He married Mildred Irene Perry on July 3, 1938. She predeceased him on Jan. 18, 1987.
Paul was a graduate of Leonardsville Old School, a member of the Unadilla Forks Baptist Church and of the Unadilla Forks Odd Fellows Lodge. He retired from Remington Arms and had previously been employed by the Milk Plant in Bridgewater, Welches Livestock, and the Kraft Plant.
Paul had several passions: his grandkids, NASCAR racing, weekly racing, hunting and gardening.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Bruce and Judy Aikins of Leonardsville and Larry and Jane Aikins of Redwood; three grandsons; four granddaughters; one great-grandson; and one great-granddaughter.
He was predeceased by his twin sister, Pauline Dye, and two brothers, Ed and Wally.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Charles Fitch, pastor, officiating. Calling hours are from noon to 2 p.m. before the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Paul's memory to either the Unadilla Forks Baptist Church or the West Winfield Emergency Squad.

James Alan Cross
ONEONTA — James Alan Cross, 52, of Oneonta and formerly of East Worcester, died unexpectedly at his residence on Monday, Jan. 8, 2001.
He was born May 7, 1948, in Whitney Point, the son of Clifford Hamilton and Helen (Lewanski) Cross.
Mr. Cross was a self-employed general contractor in the area.
He attended RPI as an engineering student for four years and was a member of Theta-Chi Fraternity.
Mr. Cross is survived by his son, Judson Cross of Enfield, Conn.; his brother, John Cross and his family; his sister, Linda and her son; and Judson's mother, Yvonne Cross.
A memorial service will be held later at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours.
