Joseph J. Fisher

GILBOA — Joseph J. Fisher, 75, of Spencer Street, Gilboa, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born May 26, 1925, in  White Plains, the son of Ernest and Dorothy (Donlin) Fisher.

Joe was married to Gloria Winterer on Feb. 21, 1945. Gloria died March 28, 2000.

Joe was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II.

For 20 years, he was a bus driver for Liberty Lines in Westchester County, and he later became employed by the New York State Highway Department.

Joe moved to Gilboa 21 years ago from Ossining.

He was a member of the Independent Hose Co. in Ossining, the Ossining American Legion and the Gilboa Elks Club.

He is survived by a sister, June Hoffman of Peekskill; a granddaughter, Tina Fisher of Gilboa; great-grandchildren, Joe Cooper, Christian Cooper and Hope Cooper, all of Gilboa. Also surviving are nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at Robinson Terrace, Stamford. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Joe's memory to the Conesville Rescue Squad, Gilboa, N.Y. 12076.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford-Grand Gorge.

Joyce Mae Liddle

SARASOTA, Fla. — Joyce Mae Liddle, 55, died Nov. 14, 2000, in Sarasota, Fla.

She was born in Margaretville, N.Y., Aug. 6, 1945, the daughter of Jehiel, who died August 1994, and her mother, Edith Liddle of Hamden, N.Y.

She is survived by two sisters, Linda Liddle Blitz of Vestal, N.Y., and Beverly Scott of Sarasota, Fla.; three brothers, John of Charlotte, N.C., David of Sarasota, Fla., and Daniel of Hamden, N.Y.; five nieces and two nephews.

Joyce graduated from Delaware Academy in Delhi, N.Y., in 1963. She attended Alfred University for two years.

Joyce spent several years in New York City, working in the Chase Manhattan Bank and Manufacturers Hanover Bank. Joyce received a degree from the American Institute of Banking in New York City.

In the 1980s, Joyce moved to Sarasota, Fla., and became a holistic consultant.

She was cremated by the National Cremation Society and a memorial service was held on Nov. 18, 2000, in the Unity Church in Sarasota, Fla.

Heinz Dawid

MANHATTAN — Heinz Dawid of Manhattan, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000.

He was a founding partner of a trademark law firm. He was a world traveler who enjoyed visiting his family.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Dawid of Oneonta; his children, Marcia Dawid Boshnack and her husband, Mark, of Franklin, Anne Dawid of Portland, Ore., and Irvin Dawid of Palo Alto,  Calif.; and his grandchildren, Samantha and Benjamin Boshnack, Isaiah Dawid and the late Michael Boshnack; and several relatives in Europe.

A private service was held Monday.

James H. Anderson

FLY CREEK — James Herbert Anderson, 83, of Fly Creek and formerly of East Islip, Long Island, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 29, 2000, at his home.

Jim was born on Sept. 4, 1917, in Flushing, borough of Queens, a son of the late James Herbert Sr. and Santa "Tina" (Coco) Anderson.

Raised and educated on Long Island, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy on Feb. 24, 1944, where he served as a motor machinist mate 3rd-class aboard the LST 890. He was honorably discharged from active duty on Dec. 28, 1945. He enlisted in the Naval Reserves on July 16, 1947, and was honorably discharged from inactive reserves on Oct. 10, 1951.

For 32 years, Jim was employed by the Sperry Rand Corp. at the Great Neck and Ronkonkoma plants of operation.

Jim's passion in life was antiques. For 32 years, he and his companion and business partner, Isabelle Ruth Reich, owned and operated Past Times Antiques. The business was first located in Bay Shore and East Islip from 1970 until 1983, when they relocated it to Fly Creek.

An avid equestrian, Jim was well known for his horsemanship.

Jim is survived by his five children and nine grandchildren, James H. Anderson Jr. of Holtsville, and his children, Jessie Anderson of Patchogue, Geraldine Anderson of Las Vegas, Nev., and Teresa Anderson of Charlotte, N.C., William Robert Anderson of Sayville, and his children, Michael Anderson and Lauren Anderson, both of Shirley, Robert Peter Anderson of Farmingville, and his children, Robert Peter Anderson of Ronkonkoma, and David Scott Anderson of Farmingville, Judith Ann Anderson of Sayville, and Joanne Conlon of Sayville, and her children, Robert Peter Williams of Deltona, Fla., and Judith Ann Conlon of Sayville.

He is also survived by his longtime companion, Isabelle Ruth Reich of Fly Creek; her daughter, Valerie Reich Hunt of Shelburne, Vt., and her children, Jessie Virginia Hunt and Abigail Isabella Hunt.

Jim was predeceased by his wife, Jessie Margaret Anderson in 1973; as well as his brother, Robert Peter Anderson; and his sister, Audrey Guillo.

A private funeral service for Jim's immediate family was held on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 30, 2000, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas S. Burleigh, pastoral care coordinator for Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in the Long Island National Cemetery, Pinelawn, Long Island.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

James Cadwell Sr.

BUENA, N.J. — James Rowland Cadwell Sr., 61, of Buena, N.J., died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Millville Hospital, Millville, N.J.

He was born Oct. 4, 1939, in New Berlin, N.Y., the son of Howard and Sally (Price) Cadwell.

James married Rosalee Dye on Jan. 24, 1959, at home in North Edmeston.

James was a truck driver for more than 35 years.

He had been interested in horses, the Unadilla Valley Railroad Association and the great outdoors.

James is survived by his wife, Rosalee; his children and their spouses, James Rowland Cadwell Jr. of Buena, N.J., Laura and Ron Nalker of Winterhaven, Fla., Theresa and James Walsh of Trenton, N.J., Joanne and Brian Imperatore of Mays Landing, N.J., Melinda and Joseph Picchi of Egg Harbor Township, N.J.; his mother, Sally P. Cadwell; his two sisters, Betty Klingler of Edmeston and Sally and her husband, Charles Welch, of Vernon Center; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

James was predeceased by his father, Howard Cadwell, in May 1986.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston, with the Rev. Gary Folz, the Rev. John Buskey and the Rev. Lauren Maxson officiating. Calling hours are from noon to 2 p.m. before the service on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in James' memory to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Edith Hungerford

ONEONTA — Mrs. Edith M. Hungerford, 94, of Oneonta, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born Nov. 27, 1906, in the town of Meredith, the daughter of Albert and Clara (Rutherford) Oliver.

She married Daniel W. Hungerford on Aug. 20, 1925, in Springfield Center. Mr. Hungerford died Nov. 7, 1981.

Edith was a dressmaker at the Oneonta Dress Factory, retiring in 1969.

She was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta.

She is survived by five grandchildren and their spouses, Muriel Tremain of Oneonta, Eleanor and William Streeter of Madison, Dennis and Jane Hungerford of Conowingo, Md., Tim and Diane Hungerford of Laurens and Dale Hungerford of Milford; 11 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Mary Hungerford of Garrattsville; and several nieces and nephews.

Edith was predeceased by her son, Daniel A. Hungerford on June 10, 1983, and her sister, Isabella Davis.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the spring at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until service time.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Paul W. DePaolo

FRANKLIN — Paul W. DePaolo, 66, of Franklin, passed away Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, in Franklin.

He was born Sept. 26, 1934, in Binghamton, the son of William and Josephine (Picciano) DePaolo. He married Mary E. Gardepe in Franklin, on May 28, 1979.

Paul was a graduate of Union Endicott High School, where he was active in sports. He especially loved boxing and was a golden gloves recipient.

Serving 12 years in active military service, he was a veteran of the Korean War. After his discharge, he continued on in the Army Reserve from which he retired as a staff sergeant.

Most of his working career was in construction, where he held various supervisory positions. Most recently, he was affiliated with Superior Precast Products, and before that he worked out of Laborer's Local No. 7 and 214.

Paul was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney, and the American Military Retirees Association.

He is survived by his wife, Mary E. DePaolo of Franklin; his children, Josephine and Stanley Albrechta of Binghamton, William DePaolo and Vicky Brundage of Oswego, Marie and Todd Garber of Ocala, Fla., and Michael DePaolo and Renee Yablonski of Mexico, N.Y.; his stepchildren, Michelle  Taylor and John Swift of Franklin and Keith and Ginger  Taylor of New Baltimore, N.Y.; and 10 grandchildren.

He is also survived by a brother and his wife, Anthony and Betty DePaolo of Binghamton and a sister and her husband, Nene and Anthony Schiappa of Beverly Hills, Fla., along with several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, with the Rev. Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends are invited to call at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, from 2 to 5 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 81 Main St., Franklin, N.Y.

Leland W. Roof

SIDNEY CENTER — Leland Wilber Roof, 80, of Sidney Center passed away Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 28, 1920, in Walton, the son of Marvin Sr. and Viola (Lambrecht) Roof.

He was married to Winifred Puffer, Jan. 27, 1940, in Deposit.

He has been a resident of Sidney Center since 1945 and was a retired dairy farmer. He also was a former employee of Jess F. Howes Building Supplies Inc. of Sidney Center.

Mr. Roof was a member of the Sidney Center United Methodist Church, the Oneonta Lodge of IOOF and the Maywood Historical Group Inc., of Sidney Center.

He is survived by his wife, Winifred Roof of Sidney Center; two daughters and a son-in-law, Joan Roof of Sidney Center and Carol and Denman Hulbert of Walton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bert and Kyle Roof of Bainbridge, Lynn and Sharon Roof of Sidney Center and Carl and Suzette Roof of Loveland, Ohio; his brother, Marvin Roof Jr. of Sidney; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; also several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a great-grandson.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, with the Rev. Donna Joy Schmid, pastor of the Sidney Center United Methodist Church, officiating,

Burial will be in the spring in Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center, N.Y.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., Delaware Valley Hospital, 1 Titus St., Walton, N.Y., or the Maywood Historical Group Inc., of Sidney Center.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Gilbert I. Risley

ONEONTA — Gilbert Ivan Risley, 73, of Oneonta, died on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness.

He was born on July 13, 1927, in Hartwick, the son of the Edward and Emily Hollis Risley.

In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by a son-in-law, Paul Pidgeon.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Palmer Risley of Oneonta; his children, Larry Risley and his wife, Pamela, of Kingwood,  Texas, Charles Risley and his wife, Priscilla, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Emily Harrington and her husband, Stan, of Oneonta; three grandchildren, Laura Risley of  Texas and Gilbert and Donald Pidgeon of Oneonta; a brother, Melvin Risley and his wife, Helen, of Tannersville, N.Y.; one aunt, Esther Cuprak of Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers-in-law, Robert Palmer of Oneonta and Marshall Palmer and his wife, Regina, of Otego; a sister-in-law, Donna Currie and her husband, Walt, of Oneonta; and many nieces and nephews.

Ivan was a lifetime resident of the area. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and was employed with the Oneonta City School District as a custodian at Valleyview School for more than 10 years. Before that, he was with Bruno's Meat Market.

He will be remembered as a good father and a sports fan who loved the New York Rangers.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at Glenwood Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association, or the charity of one's choice in Ivan's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Iona MacDonald

GILBERT, Ariz. — Mrs. Iona MacDonald, 83, of Gilbert, Ariz., formerly of Casa Grande, Ariz., died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, in Chandler Regional Hospital, Chandler, Ariz.

Mrs. MacDonald was born in Oneonta, N.Y., on Jan. 8, 1917, to Donnelly and Grace (Stewart) Bresee.

She was a resident of Gilbert, Ariz., and a former resident of Casa Grande. She moved to Arizona 45 years ago from New York.

She was a charter member of the United Methodist Church of Casa Grande.

She was a homemaker in her own home. She created home baked pies and other treats for many Pinal County residents. She also provided a laundry service out of her home which included old-fashioned line drying and ironing.

She was also involved with American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee D. MacDonald, of 62 years, and two sons, Malcom and Scott.

She is survived by her son, Douglas MacDonald of Gilbert, Ariz.; daughter, Dawn VanZandt of Upland,  Calif.; sister, Edna Benedict of Oneonta, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Casa Grande, Casa Grande, Ariz., with the Rev. Larry Baker officiating. Graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, in the Cemetery Valley of the Sun Memorial Park, 10940 E. Chandler Heights Road, Chandler, Ariz.

Robert C. Conklin

WALTON — Robert Charles Conklin, 57, a lifelong Walton resident, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, in Oneonta.

He was born on May 23, 1943, in Walton, to Merritt R. and Doris (Williams) Conklin.

He married Anne Livermore on June 10, 1978, in Walton.

He owned and operated The Powder Keg, Route 206, Walton.

He was a member of the Church of Christ, Sidney. He was also a member of the Teamsters Union, NRA, North American Hunting Club and National Muzzle Loaders Association.

Robert Conklin is survived by his wife, Anne, at home in Walton; his mother, Doris Conklin of Walton; a sister, Marilyn (Phillip) Lewis of Walton; and a brother, Thomas (Vicky) Conklin of Walton.

Also surviving are a cousin, Ralph (Florence) McDonald; an aunt, Frances McDonald; mother and father-in-law, Audrey and Charles Livermore; and brothers-in-law, Robert, Russell, Daniel and Edward Livermore; and sisters-in-law, Judy Livingston and Patricia Hoyt.

Friends may call at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, at the corner North and Delaware streets, Walton, on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service also will be at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at 11 a.m., with Ed Gibson and Larry Bailey officiating. Burial at Walton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of Christ, Sidney, or the American Heart Association.
