Louise Davis Jones, 100, of Saranac Lake, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at the AMC-Uihlein Health Care in Lake Placid. Born Sept. 19, 1906 in Saranac Lake, she was the daughter of Pearl (Haselton) Davis and Frank Henry Davis. Louise graduated from Saranac Lake High School and worked at the local telephone company before moving to Columbus, Ohio. During World War II and for several years later, she was employed at Crosley Corporation in Cincinnati. In 1957, she decided to return to New York state. She retired from the state Department of Social Services in Albany and returned to Saranac Lake where she lived at Dechantel Apartments for more than 20 years. Louise is survived by her very special niece, Joann Miller of Clifton Park; her niece Treva Miller of Palm Harbor, Fla.; her nephew Bruce Miller of Deerfield Beach, Fla; and several cousins, including Don Davis and Steve Davis who were always there for her. She was predeceased by her parents and a sister, Elizabeth Davis Bailey. Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, May 31 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. Following cremation, interment services will take place at the convenience of the family. Alfred “Pecore” Bradley, 68, of Tupper Lake, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at the home of his daughter Jennifer where he had been residing for the past several months. Born Feb. 20, 1939 in Tupper Lake, he was the son of Harold and Hazel (Barber) Bradley. Pecore attended local schools and was employed by Franklin Dairy for several years. After the close of the dairy, he worked at Rosebud Dairy of Saranac Lake and later retired from the village of Tupper Lake. Pecore worked for a time with C.E.L. Lumber on the construction of the Blue Mountain Lake Museum. He was also known as the “IceMan” for making ice at the Tupper Lake Civic Center. He is survived by his daughter Jennifer Bradley of Tupper Lake; two sons: Harold of Tupper Lake and Michael and his wife Linda of Virginia; six grandchildren; three sisters: Betty Edwards and her husband Phil, Mary DeGone and her husband Raymond and Francis Bradley; and a sister-in-law, Rosella Bradley, all of Tupper Lake. He was predeceased by his parents and one brother James. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 1 at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Tupper Lake. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2 at St. Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Helen Katherine Pelkey, 84, began her flight to heaven Saturday, May 26, 2007, surrounded by friends and family members. Born Oct. 22, 1922 to Ernest and Irene Walton (Quintel), she was the oldest of eight children. Helen was married Sept. 27, 1939 to Norman W. Pelkey. Helen resided at 54 Dorsey St., Saranac Lake for about 60 years. In 2005, the street was renamed Pelkey Lane. Our kind and gifted Saranac Lake resident was well known for her beautiful cake making skills. She had been employed at Will Rogers Hospital, the Berkeley Delicatessen and the Saranac Lake Central School District. Helen was a thoughtful and well loved woman who took great pleasure sharing time with her many friends and family members. Her smile and generosity will be missed by many. Helen is survived by her youngest sister, Geraldine Gilbert of St. Petersburg, Fla.; seven children: Jacqueline Olsen of Manassas, Va., Norman and his wife Linda Pelkey of Jonesboro, AK, Helen Luzzi and Francis Pelkey of Saranac Lake, Sandra and her husband David Bickford of Ray Brook, Dr. Kathleen Pelkey of Hancock, Maine, and Michelle and her husband Paul Gibson of Irmo, S.C.; 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband in 1987, and six siblings: Raymond, Ruth, Harold, Jean, George and Richard. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 29 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A Bible vigil service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, at St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake. Following cremation, a graveside service will take place at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, to be announced at a later date. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department.
Virginia Sue Sherman, 61, of Gull Pond Road in Piercefield, died Monday, May 21, 2007 at her home. Born June 9, 1945 in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of James and Ruby (Jenkins) Grey. She attended school in Virginia and was employed by the law firm of Hazel Thomas for more than 20 years as the administrative assistant to the managing partner. On Jan. 26, 1986, she married Sherrill Sherman. The couple relocated to the Adirondacks, and in 1992 they made their home on Gull Pond. Sue was employed at North Country Community College as the assistant to the president for the past 11 years. She enjoyed entertaining friends and was a very gracious hostess. She is survived by her husband; a son, Buck Sherman and his wife Laurel of TImberville, Va.; three daughters: Carrie Marlow of Kanopolis, N.C., Laura Hodge and her husband Jon of Corning and Rachel Brownell and her husband Jason of Purceville, Va.; eight grandchildren; and an aunt, Laverne Jenkins of Alexandria, Va. She was predeceased by her parents and one brother James Grey. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 24 at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Tupper Lake. Bernard R. Tuthill, 89, of 21 St. Lawrence Ave., Saranac Lake, died Thursday, May 17, 2007 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born Nov. 16, 1917 in Sugarbush, he was the son of Roy and Irene (Collins) Tuthill. He married Pearl E. LaGoy in 1939 in Black Brook. Mr. Tuthill had been a lifelong resident of the area and was employed as a mechanic at the Ford Garage on upper Broadway from 1952 to 1959, as a mechanic for Mayerson’s gravel pit from 1959 to 1963 and as a mechanic and salesman for Plattsburgh Motor Service from 1964 until his retirement in 1975. Mr. Tuthill will be remembered for his quick smile, great sense of humor, constant tinkering, and most of all for his great love for his family. He also loved to restore old cars. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Pearl of Saranac Lake; two daughters: Beverly Jones and her husband George of Saranac Lake, Joan Kiah and her husband Patrick of Saranac Lake; two sisters: Teresa Nichols of Sugarbush, and Ilean Simpson and husband August of Bloomingdale; two brothers: Raymond Tuthill and his wife Patricia of Vermontville and Francis Tuthill of Bloomingdale; four granddaughters: Kimberly Girouard, Linda Allen, Michelle Wilson and Sheila Kent, all of Saranac Lake; five great-grandsons: Timothy and Derek Johnson, Donald Wilson, Dylan Kent and Keaton Allen, all of Saranac Lake. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers: Leland and Herman Tuthill; and two sisters: Marie Skiff and Rosella Laundry. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 3 p.m. Wednesday May 23 at St. Paul’s Church in Bloomingdale with the Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Katherine N. O’Rourke, 97, died Friday, May 18, 2007 at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid, where she had been a resident since April 2005. Born Jan. 13, 1910 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of Joseph A. and Mary Ellen (McCormick) O’Rourke. Miss O’Rourke was a graduate of Cortland Normal School and went on to pursue a career in teaching. She had been a third grade elementary school teacher, teaching in the Lake Placid School District, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the New York State Retired Teacher’s Association, the Lake Placid Garden Club, and was a volunteer and served on the Advisory Board at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid. She is survived by two nieces: Kathleen Chapman, of Camden, and Kathleen Egan, of Rockville Center. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 21 at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. A Bible Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 21 at the funeral home. Armand P. Amell, 81, of Hoel Pond, Saranac Lake and Inverness, Fla., died Thursday, May 10, 2007 at the Hospice of Citrus County Hospice House in Lecanto, Fla. Born Aug. 11, 1925 in Riverview, he was the son of Arthur and Cora (Strack) Amell. He married Betty Boula on June 12, 1948 at St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake. Mr. Amell had been a long-time resident of Saranac Lake and became a “snowbird” in 1990, splitting his time between Inverness and Saranac Lake. He was employed as a mechanical supervisor with the Adirondack Daily Enterprise newspaper, with 38 years of service until his retirement in 1987. Mr. Amell was a parishioner of St. John’s Church in Lake Clear and Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Inverness. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Lodge BPOE 1508, both of Saranac Lake. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working in his garden and was an avid reader. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty, of Inverness, Fla. and Saranac Lake; two brothers: Bernard Amell and his wife Shirley of Plattsburgh and Arnold Amell and his wife Joan of Scotia; two sisters-in-law: Betty Amell of Morrisonville and Annabelle Paradis of Saranac Lake; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; one brother Maynard J. Amell; and one sister Winifred Petrashune. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at noon Saturday, May 19 at St. John’s Church in Lake Clear. Interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Donald D. Baker, 74, formerly of Saranac Lake, died Saturday, May 5, 2007 at the Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid where he had been a resident since 1993. Born April 21, 1933 in Saranac Lake, he was the son of Darwin and Edith (Baker) Baker. Donald married Beverly J.D. Donaldson. He was a veteran of the United States Army, and served during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. Mr. Baker was a lifelong resident of Saranac Lake and was employed by Plattsburgh Motor Service from 1953 to 1979. He worked there as the manager for 16 years. He later was employed at Upstate Auto in Saranac Lake as a parts and service manager and was responsible for warranty claims from 1979 until he became disabled in April 1993. Mr. Baker was a member of the Saranac Lake Elks Lodge BPOE 1508 for more than 35 years. He bowled in the Elks League for many years, was a member of the Saranac Lake Golf Club and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by one daughter Teri Baker of Nokesville, Va.; one son Alan Baker of Puyallup, Wash.; two brothers: Loren Baker of Waterville, Maine and Norman Baker of Fairfax, Va.; three sisters: Pauline Hugaboom of Malone, Viola Tierney of Malone and Diane Baker of Binghamton; two grandsons: Vinnie and Ryan Baker; one granddaughter Brianna Baker; two step-sons: Dylon and Bradley Luce of Albany; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; one brother Darwin Baker; and one sister Anna Paye. Joan Margaret Ormsby, 76, of 264 McCombs Street, Saranac Lake, died Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born Aug. 22, 1930 in Saranac Lake, she was the daughter of John and Dorothy (St. Louis) Martin. She married Raymond Ormsby on Aug. 30, 1952 at St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake. Joan was a lifelong resident of Saranac Lake and was employed at various area businesses including Oxford Market, Keough’s Motel and had been a pin setter. Joan also worked as a housekeeper for many years. She enjoyed bingo, was a loving mother, a wonderful grandmother, and will be remembered as a warm and happy person with a smile for everyone. She is survived by six daughters: Crystal Wells and her husband Butch of Saranac Lake, Penny Yelle and her husband Rick of Malone, Dorothy Ormsby and her companion John of Saranac Lake, Henrietta Muncil and her companion Donnie of Saranac Lake, Jean Roberts and her companion Jeff of St. Regis Falls and Bobbie Jo Thompson and her companion Mark of Saranac Lake; a son-in-law, Junior Tucker of Westdale; two sisters: Virginia Bowen of Saranac Lake and Betty Martin of Saranac Lake; two brothers: Robert Martin of Saranac Lake and Preston Burl of Saranac Lake; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband in 1975; her parents; two daughters: Cheryl Tucker and Roselma Ormsby; three brothers: Donald Martin, Pete Martin and Albert Theriault; a sister Dorothy Sexton; three grandchildren: Joanne Buttons, Albert Tucker and Raymond Ormsby II; and one great-granddaughter Gillian Yelle. Orville V. Paye, 81, of McMaster Road in Lake Clear, died Sunday, May 13, 2007 at the Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid. Born Oct. 11, 1925 in Saranac Lake, he was the son of George and Maude (Rock) Paye. Orville was a lifelong resident of Saranac Lake and had owned and operated the Gold Mine since 1964. He graduated from Saranac Lake High School at the young age of 16. He graduated from Clarkson University at the age of 18 with a degree in radio engineering. After college, the U.S. Government recognized Orville’s aptitude for math and radio engineering and recruited him to work on a top secret project during World War II. He was also very active in local, state and national politics. Orville received a lifetime achievement award from the Republican National Committee and the Eisenhower Commission for his unwavering participation in the party. Orville was a true Republican. He was also an arts enthusiast who enjoyed the ballet, music and reading. He is survived by his sister-in-law Margaret Paye of Saranac Lake; two nieces: Barbara Kent of Saranac Lake and Linda Greyson and her husband Jon of Orange City, Fla.; three nephews: George Paye and his wife Vicky of Saranac Lake, William Paye and his companion Irene Snyder of Saranac Lake and Steve Paye and his wife Muriel of Ash barrow, N.C.; many great-nieces and nephews, including his special nurse Angie Kent of Bloomingdale; and his long-time close friend Genevieve Clarkson of Saranac Lake. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother George Paye; and a great-nephew Johnny Kent.

Walt Patnode, 86, of Rainbow Lake Road, passed away at his home Friday, May 11, 2007. Born March 27, 1921 in Onchiota, he was the son of Oliver and Dora (LaMora) Patnode. Mr. Patnode was raised in Onchiota and attended the local Onchiota School, and later attended Petrova High School in Saranac Lake. During the summer he worked various jobs including working for his uncle Hayden Tormey who owned an IGA grocery; his primary summer job was caretaking for local camps. Walt was drafted into the Army in 1942, and served in the European Theater of Operations in Italy including Sicily. He was honorably discharged in 1944. Upon his return he became a full-time caretaker for different local camps in the area, and retired in the early 1990s. On Jan. 1, 1951, he married Florence Paye at the Lake Clear Presbyterian Church and the couple relocated to Rainbow Lake around that time. In 1983, Walt and Joan E. Ormsby became companions and, until his death, they shared 23 years together. He was a member of the Paul Smiths-Gabriels Volunteer Fire Department. Walt’s hobbies included hunting and playing sports, especially baseball. He was a long time member of the Brighton Blues baseball team. Bowling was another sport favored by Walt; he was a great bowler, he loved playing just about any sport. Walt also loved music; he was a member of a local country western band’s “The Rhythm Boys,” who were frequently featured on a local radio station on Friday nights. He played numerous instruments, among them piano, guitar, mandolin, the stand-up bass was his favored instrument. Mr. Patnode was also a member of the Gabriels American Legion and later joined the Saranac Lake American Legion. He is survived by his companion of 23 years Joan; two sisters: Geneva Hammer and her husband Ed of Hammond, Ind. and Mildred Patnode of Onchiota; three brothers: Francis Patnode and his wife Vi of Fort Edward, Roland Patnode and his wife Jackie of Saranac Lake and Raymond Patnode of Saranac Lake; several nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his first wife Florence in December 1980; his parents; and two brothers: Harold and Robert Patnode. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 15 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake with a Veteran’s service at 7:45 p.m. There will be a service 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 16 at the funeral home with the Rev. Lawthers officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Walter L. Hare 87, of Cascade Road in Lake Placid, died Friday, May 11, 2007 in Lake Placid. Born July 11, 1919, he was the son of Charles and Tressa (LaMoy) Hare. Mr. Hare was a graduate of Lake Placid High School, class of 1940. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. After serving his country in the Army, he enlisted and retired from the U.S. Air Force. He was a 60-year member of the Lake Placid Masonic Lodge No. 834 and a member of the Lake Placid American Legion Post 326. Mr. Hare retired from the town of North Elba where he worked as a heavy equipment operator. He is survived by his wife Gertrude (Torrance) Hare of Lake Placid; a son Kenneth Hare and his wife Carolyn of Lake Placid; a daughter, Ada Smith and her husband Stephen of Keene; two brothers: Charles Hare and his wife Irene and Donald Hare and his wife Louise; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 14 at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. An American Legion Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday night at the funeral funeral home, followed by a Masonic prayer service at 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 15 at the funeral home with the Rev. Alfred Trembley of Port Henry officiating. Burial will follow in North Elba Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations in memory of Walter be directed to the Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service or Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department.
Shirley A. Hardy, of Lewisburg, Pa., died Wednesday, May 9, 2007. Born Feb. 6, 1935 in Lake Placid, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Mary (McDonough) Wilson. On July 23, 1956, she married Donald J. Hardy. Shirley was a graduate of the Lake Placid High School, class of 1953, and a 1957 graduate of nurse’s training in Albany. She worked as a registered nurse at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village in Lewisburg, Pa. Mrs. Hardy is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: the Rev. Andrew Donald Hardy and his wife Kathleen of Midlothian, Va. and Benjamine Mark Hardy and his wife Deborah of Mifflin; two daughters and sons-in-law: Deborah E. and Scott Reeves of Smyrna, Del. and Sarah P. and Dan Kline of Lewisburg; eight grandchildren, four brothers: Robert and Ray Wilson, both of Lake Placid, Jim Wilson of Schenectady and Tom Wilson of Hayesville, N.C. She was predeceased by her husband on Feb. 9, 1996; two brothers: Phillip and Donald Wilson; and one sister, Marlene Wilson. A graveside prayer service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday May 14 in the North Elba Cemetery in Lake Placid. The Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charge of arrangements.
